Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers has recruited a new entrepreneur-in-residence to work in its Department of Energy program, which aims to commercialize clean energy technologies coming out of national labs. Kleiner’s representative for the program will be Joel Serface, the current director of the Austin Clean Energy Incubator, we’ve learned.

A source close to the situation said that Serface plans to transition out of his role at the incubator over the next six weeks; Austin Clean Energy, meanwhile, plans to open up a nationwide search for Serface’s replacement. Prior to his job in Austin, Serface worked at several venture firms, including as a partner at Eastman Ventures, the venture arm of the Eastman Kodak company; as a director at Sierra Ventures; and as a principal at Alliant Partners.

In his new role as an EIR for Kleiner, Serface will work with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., to find technologies to commercialize. The other firm-lab partnerships are ARCH Venture Partners, which will team up with Sandia National Laboratory, and Foundation Capital, whose entrepreneur will work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The DOE will provide $100,000 for each entrepreneur; the venture sponsor will then match that funding. Each firm will have one entrepreneur-in-residence at their assigned lab at a time, with the hope of spinning out a company in three to four months. At that point, the venture firm will put into residence their next entrepreneur to begin the process all over again. Once an entrepreneur has identified a technology for commercialization, he or she, in concert with the sponsoring venture firm, will negotiate a license for the technology.

Serface has been helping startups negotiate licensing and commercialization deals at the incubator for almost two years, so the experience shouldn’t be too different for him. Given his background in venture investing, he should have a good idea of what types of deals to look for.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is in talks with electric vehicle startup Project Better Place about building the infrastructure for a fleet of plug-in cars in the city, including parking meter charging stations and battery replacement stations.

Newsom traveled to Israel last week to meet with representatives of the company. The mayor’s office tells us that during a luncheon with Moshe Kaplinsky, CEO of Project Better Place Israel (pictured after the jump with the mayor), and Aliza Peleg, a rep from the startup’s U.S. offices, Newsom offered to work with Project Better Place if it would consider doing a test project in San Francisco. Newsom also met with the company’s chairman, Idan Offer, at a reception earlier.

The city is already in early talks with private companies that could potentially work with Project Better Place to build an electric vehicle infrastructure, according to the mayor’s office. Newsom was also said to be “very impressed” with the Project Better Place’s team in Israel.

If San Francisco does do a deal with Project Better Place, it would be the first city in the U.S. to get on board with Shai Agassi’s electric vehicle infrastructure plan (with three cars, San Francisco currently has one of the largest plug-in hybrid fleets in the country). This is the first we’ve heard of Project Better Place being in serious discussions stateside; we’ve tried to contact them for comment and when we hear back, will update the post.

Project Better Place also showed off a prototype of its electric vehicle in Israel over the weekend. But by then, Newsom had already jetted back to the States to speak at the New Yorker’s “Stories from the Near Future,” conference. In his talk, he described Project Better Place’s plans in Israel, saying that San Francisco wants “to be the first city [in the country] to adopt that strategy.”

While U.S. ethanol producers are like teenagers in the global biofuels market, Brazil is like a mature adult, approaching middle age. The Brazilian government began investing heavily in ethanol infrastructure and R&D more than 30 years ago. Now the country, which produces 45 percent of its own transportation fuel “on only 1 percent of its arable land,” is aggressively looking beyond both first-generation biofuels and its domestic market.

Brazil currently produces 4.7 billion gallons of ethanol every year; the Brazilian government estimates that number will double by 2015. And they are increasingly looking at the U.S. as potential buyers. Although President Bush did sign an ethanol technology-sharing agreement with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a 54 cent-a-gallon tariff prevents cheap Brazilian ethanol from competing with homegrown U.S. corn ethanol.

But the readily fermentable sugars found in sugarcane make it a far better ethanol feedstock than grain. Brazilian sugar ethanol gives an eightfold return on the fossil energy used to make it; American corn, on the other hand, only yields 1.3 times the fossil energy used. Brazil is now the No. 2 producer of ethanol, dethroned by the U.S. in 2005, but still leads in ethanol exports, sending some 900 million gallons of ethanol overseas last year, according to Reuters.

Brazil’s ethanol success and failures can teach the rest of the world a lot about biofuels. So who are the big Brazilian ethanol players? Who’s investing in the sector? And which biofuel startups are making Brazilian deals? Below, a primer:

Big Players:

Cosan SA: The largest grower and processor of sugarcane on the planet, Cosan crushed some 36.2 million tons of sugarcane into 326.7 million gallons of ethanol in 2007. More recently, the company made a move to buy all of ExxonMobil’s Brazilian distribution and service-station businesses for $826 million. Speaking at Stanford last November, a month after the company raised $1.2 billion via an IPO on the NYSE, Cosan CFO Paulo Diniz broke down Cosan’s $1.7 billion in revenue: 61 percent from sugar sales, 33 from ethanol sales, and 6 percent from selling the electricity generated by burning sugarcane byproducts. Diniz added that the company is developing genetically modified sugarcane that can be grown in various climates and could increase its production to “at least 150 or even over 200″ tons per capita from the current 85.

Petrobras: Petrobas still has significant petroleum interests but is also the largest buyer of ethanol in the world. Petrobras is an energy company; it doesn’t actually grow any sugar but buys it and sells the fuel through its distribution arm, Petrobras Distribuidora. According to Bloomberg, Petrobas plans to invest $600 million by 2010 to expand its ethanol exports. “The U.S. is the market where we would like to be,” Petrobras head Jose Sergio Gabrielli told Bloomberg. Petrobras also recently formed a partnership with Japan’s Nippon Alcohol Hanbai to export Brazilian ethanol to Japan.

Santelisa Vale: Brazil’s second-largest sugarcane and ethanol producer, Santelisa Vale recently sold its 50 percent stake in Tropical BioEnrgia — which was launched with plans for $1 billion of ethanol refineries — to BP Oil for $60 million. In the meantime, the commodities division of Goldman Sachs put more than $200 million into Santelisa Vale.

Crystalev: A subsidiary of Santelisa, Crystalev’s own operations are massive. In addition to being Brazil’s largest producer of renewable energy, the company says they produce 2 billion tons of sugar and 1 billion liters of ethanol each year. However, Crystalev’s operations represent only 8 percent of the total sugarcane crushed in Brazil. The company also recently partnered with California startup Amyrsis to develop renewable, sugar-based fuels including diesel, jet fuel and gasoline; they’re aiming to commercialize sugar-based diesel by 2010.

Startup Players Heading to Brazil:

Brazil doesn’t just tap the cane’s sucrose for ethanol. The country’s sugarcane crop also produces a considerable amount of bagasse, the fibrous leftovers and fodder for a growing number of cellulosic ethanol ventures that are finding Brazil to be a great place to set up shop.

The company is now working hard to become Brazil’s largest ethanol producer, with 14 mills under construction at a cost of $2.4 billion. While the company suffered some bad PR following accusations of illegal labor practices, the Brazilian Labor Ministry has lifted the operation restrictions and declared Brenco compliant.

Amyris Biotechnologies: In a joint venture with Santelisa Vale-owned Crystalsev, Amyris plans to commercialize “advanced renewable fuels” including sugar-based gasoline, diesel and jetfuel. Called Amyris-Crystalsev Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento de Biocombustiveis Ltda, the JV will start with renewable diesel; it has contracted Santelisa Vale to provide two million tons of sugarcane crushing capacity and a test plant. With $90 million from an impressive list of Sand Hill Road investors — Kleiner, DAG Ventures, Khosla Ventures and TPG Ventures — Amyris is making lucrative deals on both sides of the Gulf.

Ethos Ethanol: Backed by biofuel-happy Khosla Ventures and GreatPoint Ventures, Cambridge, Mass.-based Ethos Ethanol has been pretty stealthy about exactly what it plans to do. Its web site says merely that Ethos plans to pursue sugarcane-based fuels “in areas of Central/Latin America and the Caribbean.”

International Investors:

With such a large market opportunity, you can bet that huge multinational corporations and investors are making Brazil part of their portfolios.

Goldman Sachs: Last July, Goldman put $210 million into Santelisa Vale to expand the company’s sugar mills.

Dow Chemical: Midland, Mich.-based Dow last year teamed up with Crystalslev to make polyethylene from sugarcane ethanol.

ExxonMobil: Cosan will be buying Esso’s Brazilian distribution network, but the oil company’s Chilean and Uruguayan distribution business is up for grabs and Cosan will likely again be bidding against Petrobras.

BP: BP entered the Brazilian biofuel scene with their initial $60 investment in Tropical Bioenergia SA and say they and their partners plan to invest $1 billion in two new ethanol plants. Ethanol consumption is starting to outstrip gasoline use and fixed gas prices keep petrol fuels more expensive than ethanol, all signs that fuel players in Brazil need to get into ethanol.

Hurdles:

While sugarcane makes for more energy-efficient ethanol than corn, it is an extremely labor-intensive process, with much of the harvesting being done by hand. Earlier this year, Bloomberg TV aired a documentary called “Deadly Brew – The Human Toll of Ethanol,” which chronicles the horrendous working conditions in many Brazilian sugar fields (trailer embedded at the bottom).

The environmental toll has also been in the global media spotlight. While the Amazon is indeed being chopped and burned down at an alarming rate, farther south new sugar growth taking place at the expense of the Cerrado, one of the world’s most biodiverse savannas.

Meanwhile, food riots are breaking out in cities around the world, with much of the blame being placed on biofuel production. But Brazil says that it will continue to produce ethanol from sugar.

With their dotcom and broadband-based winnings in tow, serial entrepreneurs of the information technology age have been taking the plunge into the energy and cleantech markets, looking to recreate their e-successes. Some are finding more success than others, and some are, frankly, finding no success at all. But these are new(ish) markets for innovation, and someone’s bound to find the Google of cleantech out of all these biofuel, solar material, water purifier and wind turbine firms. Will it be one of these 25?

Can Twitter help you turn your lights off? IBM’s “Master Inventor” Andy Stanford-Clark has rigged up his home to twitter its energy use, and if you follow the tweets you can see in real time when Stanford-Clark has turned his lights and fountain off or on and whether he has an “unusually high electricity use” or has reduced power consumption.

It’s not as weird as it sounds. The Twitter stream is an exercise in using the data from home automation feeds, and the hope is that, by making energy usage data transparent and easy to digest, it will change consumer behavior and reduce energy consumption. The former Flash guys at GreenBox are working on using the same type of info for their energy management software, as are startups Agilewaves, and Lucid Design Group.

Stanford-Clark runs the Pervasive and Advanced Messaging Technologies team at IBM in Hursley Park, and he recently told the folks at startup AlertMe more about the home setup. Updates are sent via sensors in the home, and the system uses an IBM middleware product to connect the service. Stanford-Clark also told AlertMe that he can turn the lights and the fountain on or off from a website.

Stanford-Clark has also worked on the Power Orb, which changes colors to reflect energy use. He told Eureka Magazine that the inspiration for the Orb came from a project started to monitor electricity consumption for Enron.

So, what’s Andy House doing now? Go look: Its electricity meter reading is 31,400 kWh. It’s strangely addicting.

We just listened in on Dell CEO Michael Dell’s speech at the Fortune Green conference, during which he showed off a “never before seen” eco-inspired computer with a bamboo casing. Dell said the computer is 81 percent smaller than a standard desktop, uses 70 percent less power and is filled with recycled materials like old bottles, milk jugs and detergent cases. While Dell wouldn’t give the name of the bamboo box, he said the product would come out later this year and would likely range in price betwen $500 and $700. Check out our pictures of the ecoputer.

Like most schemes that don’t depend on encryption, Protectoria’s takes email out of the regular email server flow entirely. Instead, you upload your message (via secure connection) to Protectoria’s servers, and they mail out a link to the recipient. The recipient then visits the link and gets a PIN code sent to their mobile phone – the code being required to open and download the message.

Protectoria offers both standalone (web mail) and integrated (Outlook/Exchange) versions. Pricing is per recipient either way, and quoted in Norwegian Kroner at rates that start just under $2 per message.

There are other such applications, of course; they’re good for storyboarding or task management, particularly if you’re a visual thinker. What makes Lino stand out is a very attractive presentation and a good mix of features.

After an instant signup, you get your own “canvas” – think of a bulletin board. You can, of course, create, edit, delete, and reposition notes. But you can also email them, set reminders on them, and add photos as well as text. There’s a tagging facility to let you manage groups of stickies by any keyword you want. You can create new canvases, and keep them private, make them public, or share them with friends. What’s missing? Incoming email integration would be nice. But for a service that just entered beta, this one is already looking pretty good.

One of the launch showcase applications for the new Google Apps Engine is HuddleChat. If you’ve ever used 37signals’ Campfire, HuddleChat is easy to understand: it has exactly the same feature set. You get ad-hoc web-based chatting with persistent transcripts, file upload and storage, and even special formatting for source code pastes. You also get integrated login with your Google account.

The only thing missing in the attempt to clone Campfire is the price: HuddleChat is free for any number of users, while Campfire charges you if you want more than 4 people in a room. If you need a quick place to meet up with colleagues for a talk on the web, without the hassle of figuring out what the common IM software is for the group or the challenges of dealing with IRC, HuddleChat is now the cheapest way to go.

One of the problems with the iPhone (or most other phones or pocket PCs with a screen, for that matter) is that there’s no good way to stand it up on your desk at a comfortable viewing angle. This is a nuisance if you’d like to watch some of that spiffy downloaded video without having to hold the darned thing in your hands.

Faced with this issue, the creative web community has come up with a number of solutions. If you happen to have a business card or a hundred-dollar bill around, you can fold yourself an origami type stand. Alternatively, a few minutes with a mini-DV plastic case and a file will make something more durable that also doubles as a headphones holder. A step up is to use a laser cutter to make your own acrylic stand. If you want something even spiffier, there’s the Naja King, a $40 combination of cable and steel that holds your phone like a standing cobra.

Got any other innovative solutions? Let us know in the comments.

Independent web workers face a linked pair of challenges when it comes to hunting for clients: we have to find them, and we have to tell them why they should hire us. Like it or not, when you’re working for yourself one of the hats you have to wear is “marketer.” If potential customers can’t find you, they can’t hire you. If they don’t know why they should hire you, they won’t. It’s that simple.

The net, of course, makes finding clients easier than ever. Many of us have adopted a strategy of being very visible (even in the pre-web days) to maximize the chance of being tripped over by those who might hire us. Speaking at conferences and user groups, writing books and articles, and giving training courses were traditional parts of this strategy. In recent years, many independents have added blogging, social networking, and things like Twitter to the mix.

When you find a potential client, the second part of self-marketing kicks in: positioning yourself as the person they should hire. Tools for doing this include the traditional résumé (online or off), personal web sites, brochures, and even just chatting. Whatever the medium, you need to refine your personal pitch into something that’s compelling, interesting, and fast to deliver.

But this is an area where none of us are perfect yet (or else we’d be rich and retired, right?). So – share your tips! How do you connect with clients? What and how do you pitch as your skills? Any advice for the prospective web worker who wants to make the leap but is afraid of that first step?

Updated: If corn-based biofuels are the Britney Spears of the cleantech world (a fallen star but still all over the place), fuel made from algae is the next great American Idol winner (major potential in the pipeline). And despite the fact that algae-to-biofuel startups have been taking their sweet time bringing a pond scum fuel product to market, some inroads have been made recently — GreenFuel is building its first plant, PetroSun starts producing at their farm on April 1, and big oil Chevron and Shell have made some early bets as well.

As we watch this play out, here are 15 algae biofuel firms that you should know about:

GreenFuel Technologies: The Cambridge, Mass.-based algae firm led by telecom bigwig Bob Metcalfe (whom we interviewed here) has reached an agreement to build its first fuel plant — worth $92 million — in Europe, says Xconomy. It’s good news for the firm, which has hit some speed bumps over the past year, including layoffs, switching CEOs, shutting down a greenhouse in Arizona and discovering that its algae tech was more expensive than first planned.

The startup builds algae bioreactor systems, which use recycled CO2 to feed the algae, which is then converted into biofuels; it uses the containers to carefully control the algae’s intake of sunlight and nutrients. GreenFuel is backed by Polaris Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson (our video interview with DFJ here) and Access Private Equity and has been working on raising a Series C funding.

Solazyme: The five-year old firm uses synthetic biology and genetic engineering to tweak algal strains for better biofuel yields. Based in South San Francisco, the company grows its algae in fermentation tanks without sunlight, by feeding it sugar. The company is one of the few that have managed to do deals with a major oil company — Chevron — as well as biodiesel maker Imperium Renewables. Backers include Blue Crest Capital Finance and The Roda Group.

Blue Marble Energy: The Seattle-based company finds algae-infested polluted water systems, cleans up the environment, and turns the algae into biofuel. “If the future of biofuels is algae…you’re never going to get enough volume in bioreactors or ponds…It has to be something with greater volume,” the company told the Guardian . We’re not sure how Blue Marble will control the wild algae settings, but it sounds like it could be difficult.

Inventure Chemical: Also out of Seattle, this startup is working on an algae-to-jet fuel product, and told the Seattle PI that it has already created algae-based fuel in 5- to 10-gallon tests and plans to set up a test plant to see if it can produce between from three and 15 million gallons of biofuel each year. Inventure Chemical closed its first round of funding mid-2007, and investors are reported to be biodiesel company Imperium Renewables, Cedar Grove Investments, Brighton Jones Wealth Management and undisclosed angel investors.

Solena: Profiled in the New York Times today, Solena uses high temperatures to gasify algae and other organic substances with high-energy outputs. The Washington state-based company is talking with Kansas power firm Sunflower to build a 40-megawatt power plant run on gasified algae, according to the NYT; the algae would be grown in big plastic containers, and fed by a combination of sunlight and the sodium bicarbonate biproduct of the adjacent coal plant.

Live Fuels: Instead of attempting to convert algae directly into ethanol or biodiesel, this startup is trying to create green crude that could be fed directly through the nation’s current refinery system. The Menlo Park, Calif-based startup uses open-pond algae bioreactors and plans to commercialize its technology by 2010. Investors include the Quercus Trust (David Gelbaum’s well-known environmental funding group) and Sandia National Labs.

Solix Biofuels: Like Live Fuels, Solix is also working on a biocrude, but using a closed-tank bioreactor set-up. Based in Fort Collins, Colo., and founded in April 2006, the firm is backed by Colorado State University’s Engine and Energy Conversion Laboratory. The company has said that construction will begin shortly on its first, large-scale bioreactor at the nearby New Belgian Brewery, where CO2 waste produced during the beer-making proicess will be used to feed the algae.

Aurora Biofuels: Developed at the University of California at Berkeley, the company is using genetics <del datetime="2009-07-03T00:09:07+00:00">ally</del> to isolate <del datetime="2009-07-03T00:09:07+00:00">modified</del> exclusive algae strains that can efficiently create biodiesel. Aurora claims the technology can create biodiesel fuel with yields that are 125 times higher and have 50 percent lower costs than current production methods (Update: <del datetime="2009-07-06T18:46:32+00:00">developed by </del>microbial biology professor Tasios Melis was an early advisor to the team). According to the company’s web site, backers include Gabriel Venture Partners, Noventi, Oak Investment Partners (and angel investors include Auttomatic CEO Toni Schneider)

Aquaflow Binomics: The New Zealand company’s goal is to become “the first company in the world to economically produce biofuel from wild algae harvested from open-air environments.” Like Blue Marble Energy, the three-year-old startup sources its algae from algae-infested polluted water systems, cleaning the polluted environment in the process.

Late last year, publicly held Aquaflow used its algae-based biodiesel to run a Land Rover driven by New Zealand’s Minister of Climate Change. And it’s been working with Boeing on algae-to-bio-based jet fuel.

Petro Sun: This company is also publicly held, but we thought it was important to include it because they plan to start up their algae-to-biofuel production factory in Rio Honda, Texas, on April 1. The algae farm has 1,100 acres ponds that Petro Sun thinks will make 4.4 million gallons of algal oil and 110 million pounds of biomass per year. Some think the company is just jumping on the algae-slimed bandwagon.

Bionavitas: Based in Snoqualmie, Wash., the company says it has developed technology for the high-volume production of algae using bioreactors. Check out their WIPO patent app for the bioreactor setup.

Mighty Algae Biofuels: The little we do know about Mighty Algae Biofuels we learned through their entrance in the California Cleantech Open last year. We know, for example, that it uses closed bioreactors to grow the algae. They were also quoted in the San Jose Mercury this month on a story about algae biofuel.

Bodega Algae: Another newbee, this one with roots at MIT, the one-year-old firm has developed a set-up to grow algae in bioreactors with light and nutrients that it says is lower cost and more efficient than the current methods. Back in May 2007 Bodega said it was looking for $300,000 for “capital equipment, salaries and testing materials to complete the first prototype and begin a pilot study with a biodiesel manufacturing facility.” (Their web site is down, so we’ll if they’re still around).

Seambiotic: The five-year-old Israeli startup produces algae for applications, including the budding biofuel industry, and is working with Inventure Chemical. The firm has been working with Israeli Electric Company, utilizing IEC’s smokestack for a source of CO2 and grows algae in eight open algae ponds.

Samsung appears to be wasting no time in the heating up Solid State Disk market. The company indicates plans to double capacity of SSD flash drives on an annual basis and since they have 128 GB samples on the way to vendors this year, that means we’ll see 256 GB drives in 2009. Cost continues to be the primary limitation, but my hope is that SSD sales will drive prices down. I’ll be keeping an eye on the Lenovo X300 sales figures since there’s a 64 GB Samsung SSD drive in every unit.Another factor to help drop prices: Samsung indicates that the industry will make a move by year-end to multilevel cell SSDs; current technology uses single level cells which cost more. I still don’t expect SSDs to be competitively priced for some time when compared to traditional storage on cost-per-GB basis, but the price gap continues to slowly narrow. Capacity keeps trending up as well, but I gather that we’ll see traditional storage for several years to come.
