Virtacore and Nimble Storage have partnered to roll out a cloud-based replication service for customers. Starting in June 2013, Nimble Storage customers can opt for replication or a full disaster recovery solution available on Virtacore’s cloud. The new service will be named CoreREPLICATION.

Starting in June, Nimble Storage, a provider of flash-optimized hybrid storage arrays, will be rolling out a new service in partnership with Virtacore, a leading cloud services provider, that will enable Nimble Storage customers to replicate data directly to the cloud. Built into the CASL architecture of Nimble Storage devices is the ability to automatically and efficiently replicate data via a VPN Tunnel to a Nimble Storage array in the cloud. The replication only transfers the compressed, block-level changes over VPN to maintain data security, provide off-site data storage and reduce bandwidth utilization. Because these features are standard with Nimble Storage devices out of the box, there is no additional software required. Configuration and setup can be done quickly and do not require specialized technical expertise.

As an added benefit, Virtacore is offering additional virtual machine resources to customers who take advantage of the service. These virtual machine resources can be deployed quickly and provide IT managers with rapid access to their file, database, application and web servers. This is ideal for customers seeking a hybrid cloud solution as part of their disaster recovery plan.

“We feel like this is a win-win for customers. They get one of the best storage devices on the market from Nimble and the ability to replicate directly to our cloud,” said George Naspo, the CEO of Virtacore. “This, coupled with the fact that customers can also take full advantage of our disaster recovery services, creates a strong value proposition in the storage market.”

Technology has evolved to the point where anyone can become an inventor and innovator. The first wave occurred when Android and Apple created platforms that opened innovation to the masses across markets, empowering businesses and individuals to create compelling applications and realize significant financial windfalls. The next wave, called the internet of things (IoT), promises to create even bigger opportunities.

The IoT enables a world where devices, data and places are interconnected with applications and users over the internet. The results are connected products that transform how people discover, interact and experience the physical world. From improving patient care to increasing energy efficiency, automating buildings, understanding environmental changes or helping understand our own heath, the use cases are limitless. All of this is made possible through a class of small, inexpensive yet powerful processors, ubiquitous connectivity, mobile computing and interaction platforms. The IoT market, predicted to generate up to $14.4 trillion by 2020 (Cisco 2013), has captured the imagination of businesses and consumers worldwide.

Just as Apple and Android evolved the mobile market, Xively has created a platform that simplifies the creation and speeds time to market for powerful connected products on the internet of things, built by anyone, without requiring millions of dollars and teams of developers. The result is the beginning of a 21st century industrial revolution through connected products that can drive serious revenues for lots of companies or individuals.

What will you dream up?

Archimedes asked only for a lever and a place to stand and promised he could move the earth. Maybe he was only playing 200 B.C. hype man for his mathematical musings on levers, but it's a point worth taking: Work smarter and accomplish great things.

A lever, the simplest of machines, enables an incredibly amplified output. Even in the days when Hannibal wasn’t on prime-time TV but rather crossing the alps, technology was moving the world.

But if there is one thing technology junkies love even more than the idea of changing the world, it’s doing it with less work. We only want to do the minimal amount of work it takes to accomplish our goal, and that’s not a bad thing.

When Larry Wall, the author of the Perl programming language, spouted the three virtues of a programmer, “laziness” took the lead spot. And while he was certainly playing coy (the other two are “impatience” and “hubris”), he was simply reiterating Archimedes’ larger argument: Work efficiently.

Now, what the right tool is . . . that’s the hard part.

The ocean of web development that I wade through daily is full of purported tools. Some remind me of this ridiculous breakfast sandwich maker. The picture on the box looks fantastic, but there’s no possible way operating that contraption is more efficient than just making an egg sandwich. Rare others are simple and beautiful and genuinely applify my output.

That’s what we’re working on every day at Moovweb: being the tool that allows businesses to leverage their existing desktop sites, to create the mobile experiences that they need. We amplify the features, content and business logic by extending their business beyond the constraints of the desktop, to phones and tablets.

New studies show websites fending off 95 percent more exploits than five years ago, and 30 percent safer than last year. Are mobile devices throwing a wrench in the works? Backend APIs, leveraging web logic for mobile and brute scrapers. How simple strategies are often most secure.

Amid the bluster of all the web can do, there is the most important thing: Web forces choice. I’m not talking about “users” (that term oddly favored in illegal drugs and online services). Users have cheap and easy options from every corner of the web. I’m talking about the companies that create those web experiences. For companies, choices are expensive and difficult: like which data to surface, which business process to offer and how to deliver the two. And, perhaps most importantly, how to secure it all.

Most of our corporate websites have been built and secured through a decade of such decisions. And we have the infrastructure to prove it. We have, by now, layers of security to protect the website against threats of the past (remember SQL injection), present and — one can hope at least — future. Web security is getting better. Wonky studies find vulnerabilities in business websites are now down to their lowest level ever, dropping 30 percent in the past year. And down 95 percent since 2007. The desktop web is, at long last, the most secure part of the public-facing internet.

Enter, of late, mobile devices. (And tablets, and a whole bag of cool new gadgets. And those awful Google glasses.) For each, apps all around.

Business mobile apps and sites are not very useful without business data. The problem, of course, is that the company data is stored in a swath of database server tables spread across . . . read more . . .

Despite the hype, one size does not fit all when it comes to data analytics in the cloud. Here are two companies using the cloud -- one using the public cloud, one using a private cloud -- to solve specific business problems.

The power of cloud-based analytics is indisputable, given its potential for simplicity and scalable computing power. But reality falls short of the “pie in the sky” promises of moving all data and all analytics to an open and public cloud. In a recent blog post, Teradata’s Scott Gnau describes analytics in the cloud, in a way that sidesteps the cloud’s “not so silver lining” of concerns around security, privacy, downtime, data loss and latency issues.

He shares his recommendations using use cases of both public and private cloud deployments. Two examples he shares are BevMo! and Meredith.

BevMo!, a large West Coast retailer, built an integrated and managed data warehouse in the public cloud using Teradata Cloud Services. By accessing analytics hardware, software, managed services and customer services in the cloud, BevMo! was able to get flexible, secure and scalable analytics on a subscription basis.

BevMo! runs advanced analytic for things like SKU management, regulatory compliance, invoice error reduction and sophisticated pricing analytics that involve product, cost, location and other variables.

Meanwhile, media giant Meredith turned to Teradata for a private cloud solution to leverage its sizable data assets. For the publisher of major brands like Better Homes and Gardens, the private cloud delivers immediate and relevant messaging to consumers in near real-time. This has helped the company improve reach and reduce subscriber loss. Meredith can now run 600 campaigns a month instead of 300, and the company has slashed segment analysis time from 24 hours to less than one.

In this webinar, we’ll examine concrete steps businesses can take to reclaim understanding and control of their applications and users after the initial download and how to apply the same business logic that has guided their web-based efforts.

Mobile development and marketing budgets continue to rise, but are businesses realizing any return on their investment? More than a quarter of all downloaded mobile apps are used only once, and product managers can only guess at the reasons. Is the connection slow on certain carriers? Are hardware conflicts causing errors? Is user engagement low because of poor-quality content? If your application is performing well, how can you anticipate problems before they cause damage? Without solid data to inform decisions, product managers are flying blind. Maintaining relevance and continuing to engage the mobile user is an ongoing process requiring effort, planning and actionable data.

In this webinar, our panel will address these questions:

What abandonment risks are unique to mobile applications?

What kinds of application, network and system information can businesses gather?

What are the privacy and regulatory concerns of gathering such information?

How should application developers use customer data to prioritize improvements and outreach?

Can developers use mobile data to address risks before they become problems?

Speakers include:

No matter what form it takes, all data is equal when it comes to security and compliance; it represents the lifeblood of an organization. Most organizations have a handle on structured data, but it’s the digital landfill of unstructured data that is posing issues.

Data is taking over. Organizations of all sizes are overwhelmed with structured and unstructured data. Contained in databases, structured data can be monitored through applications, while unstructured data represents a serious security risk to organizations. Unstructured data is leaving organizations confused about what it is, where it is kept and who has access to it.

Organizations tend to put focus on corralling data and disregard the importance of looking beyond the data. It’s critical to examine who has access to what and the parameters of the user’s role within the organization. By focusing on data alone, organizations run the risk of missing key factors that could affect data governance and lead to regulatory exposure and security holes.

Regardless of whether an organization is global or operates solely within a community, data governance must be able to satisfy compliance requirements and prevent security threats. It’s important to view access governance through the lens of connected security in order to have the full picture of access across the organization. Not only will a connected security approach help the organization maintain global compliance, it will help implement a full life cycle strategy for proactively detecting and mitigating security threats — both from inside and outside the organization.

Dell Software’s Quest One Data Governance Edition — Classification Module enables organizations to look beyond the data by leveraging connected security. Make connected security the basis for your data access governance, and the whole picture will always be visible.

When considering a cloud application development and deployment platform such as a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering, one of the key considerations is the flexibility that the PaaS platform offers. Join GigaOM Research and our sponsor Red Hat for an in-depth discussion on June 25 at 10 a.m. PT.

Rigid or flexible?

A PaaS solution should give you the flexibility to leverage the languages, services and middleware that are most appropriate for each application that is built and deployed to the PaaS. And these may vary from application to application.

In today’s open hybrid cloud world this becomes even more important. Cloud applications need to be inherently stateless, service-oriented, distributed and portable. The PaaS should facilitate this architecture with ease. In addition, choice of deployment model and choice of infrastructure (whether bare metal, virtualization, private cloud, public cloud or even hybrid cloud) are key to a composable PaaS environment.

In this webinar, key industry experts will discuss the importance of portability and of having options within your PaaS technology, including the ability to mix and match the technologies that are right for a specific application, as well as the ability to expand on capabilities now and into the future.

In this webinar, you will learn:

Best practices around development workflows using PaaS

The trade-offs of leveraging technology as “pluggable” components

The path to success with PaaS, leveraging multi-language options

Best practices in using a hybrid cloud architecture using PaaS

The importance of open-source languages in your PaaS
