Roughly half a dozen new mobile operating systems will come to market over the next 6 to 12 months. Many of these look to be more sophisticated than the older ones controlled by Apple and Google. This report will examine the most noteworthy of these new operating systems, Blackberry 10, Firefox, Tizen, and others. It will also document their competitive advantages and disadvantages and gauge what their chances of success — or even true disruption — might be.

Every January CES sets the stage for the next year in tech, showing off all the latest in consumer electronics as well as smart-home technology, digital health, connected cars, virtual reality, and mobile platforms. Given how CES is now a barometer for such a wide array of technology segments, we at GigaOM Research decided to ask our readers which way the tech winds will blow over the next year based on what they saw in Las Vegas. Our readers responded with the technologies they thought were the most disruptive and least disruptive, as well as the companies they were most impressed with, from categories as diverse as TV technology, smart home, connected car, internet of things, virtual or augmented reality, 3D printing, interfaces, digital health, mobility, and robotics.

Delivering and managing the web experience isn't just about mobile. Companies are also faced with new challenges in the desktop environment, including browser fragmentation, network evolution, and client-side technologies. They must invest in both the desktop environment as well as to create an optimized experience for mobile.

Delivering a positive web experience has become exceedingly more complex as the access environment has shifted from a desktop-centric vision to one that is increasingly focused on mobile devices. Mobilizing web design is a catch-22; adjusting to design challenges is costly, but not adjusting is equally costly, because a poor mobile web experience results in a loss of revenue. This report will examine what drives content consumption today and illustrate what the changing consumption of content has meant to the development and delivery of web and mobile content. It will also examine the evolution of the web experience and explore the challenges of content delivery to both mobile and desktop devices.

The last quarter of 2012 saw the rise of cloud-based databases, the cloud awakening of software giants such as HP, and many cloud outages that have put question marks around the use of cloud computing. Many enterprises found more IT dollars in their budgets, and they will focus on the cloud for much of that spending. And while the enterprise focused largely on private clouds, interest in public cloud computing is greater than many analysts expected. This fourth-quarter analysis discusses these trends and more.

The fourth quarter saw new fissures emerge in some corners of the digital media business, while some old fissures reemerged in others. Having held off the immediate challenge of over-the-top video, the traditional pay-TV industry began to show signs of severe internal stresses, while the music industry fell into a new, internal battle over performance royalties. Also, the Justice Department’s lawsuit against Apple and five major publishers over ebook price fixing put an end to agency pricing of ebooks and opened the door to innovation in publishing and bookselling.

Signaling traffic growth is outstripping mobile data traffic by 30 percent to 50 percent according to 4G Americas, and the concept of a signaling storm that threatens the stability of mobile networks and creates congestion is a very real scenario. However, the growth in signaling traffic is not only an indicator of success but also shows that mobile data has come of age, not just as the mobile extension of the fixed Internet but as an emerging new way to stay connected. This report will examine the causes of this signaling storm and how operators can manage it to their benefit in the coming months.
