Bill Henningsgaard a former Microsoft sales and marketing exec,  his 17-year-old son, and two others, were killed in a plane crash outside of New Haven, Conn. on Friday.  The  private plane crashed into houses near the Tweed-New Haven Municipal Airport. Henningsgaard, a 14-year Microsoft veteran, was executive director of Eastside Pathways

One of the mysteries of the Prism data collection controversy is how Edward Snowden, an IT guy and not an agent after all, had access to all the stuff he leaked. But, the National Security Agency will be cutting 90 percent of its systems administrators and automating many of their tasks, according to Reuters. NSA Director Keith Alexander disclosed the plan — without mentioning Snowden by name — Thursday at a cybersecurity conference in New York. Alexander was, in essence, restating plans that others at the agency have already laid out.

Cloudscaling CTO Randy Bias made waves recently with an open letter calling for the OpenStack faithful to embrace Amazon Web Services APIs in their clouds. His letter, which took issue with Rackspace’s refusal to adopt these APIs, spawned another open letter from Rackspace’s Robert Scoble. Now, in a take-two post, Bias concedes he should have called for a community focus on the issue but sticks to his guns on most of his key points.

We keep hearing that the U.S. National Security Agency’s propensity for data collection will hurt American cloud companies. Now, one researcher has put a figure on those losses — $22 billion to $35 billion over the next three years. That’s according to The Informational Technology & Innovation Foundation.

ITIF describes itself as a non-partisan think tank dedicated to promoting policies that advance the use of technology around the world. Honorary board members of the Washington D.C.-based group include California representatives Anita Eshoo and Darrell Issa and U.S. Senators Orrin Hatch and Mark Warner.
