Now MTV goes for Music Downloads

The question is: what took them so long.

MTV, arguably the single best music brand out there is getting into the music downloading business. Or as they say, it is crashing the party, now that its brand is being upstaged by pissants like Apple’s iTunes, Rhapsody, MusicMatch, and BuyMusic.com.  MTV hopes to capitalize on its strong brand name with the lucrative teen market and will launch the new service sometime in the first half of ’04.

My guess on this one is that MTV might be too late to the game. ITunes has become the brand to beat in this market place and MTV despite all its buzz will have one problem: music labels have little or no love for this monopoly. In the past the big labels have tried to start their own music channels (MuchoMusic?) and tried to stay away from MTV. What will make it any different.

MTV’s previous digital efforts have been nothing to write home about, and if ITunes is any indicator, download music business is much more difficult than it seems.

Bottom-line - yet another reason to get DSL/Cable Broadband connection.
