Why iPad 2 Is Coming and What to Expect
There’s been quite a bit of buzz around the next iPad. The one we’re using now is only six months old, but some are already looking forward to the possibility of a new form factor and a new screen size. I expect Apple to release another iPad this year. Here’s why:
Competition is non-existent for iPad right now. All the other guys have tablets shipping “end of the year,” and many more of the more formidable iPad competitors will be out in 2011. Apple’s going to do what it can to get the second revision out this year only for that one liner that Steve loves, “We’re releasing the next iPad today before our competitors have even caught up with the first generation.” He’s used that line a few times, but the iPad itself will probably look very similar to the one you’re holding in your hand right now. I predict it will have the same aluminum back, the same bezel and similar weight and the battery life will be mostly unchanged. What will be new?
New Screen Size
The rumor lately is that a 7″ model is on its way to sit right beside the current 9″ model, and due to Apple’s resolution independence and growing number of developers, a new size won’t cause many issues beyond a few optimizations that have to happen from App Store developers to make things look perfect. For the most part, Apple’s going to make sure most apps “just work.”
The new screen size will help iPad reach a lower price point for consumers and compete with the Amazon Kindle in size and price. Soon, an iPad with thousands of apps will sit along-side the Kindle nicely and make Amazon drop its price even lower to compete.
New Screen Resolution
You can be sure that Apple’s Retina Display, or something very close, will make its way to iPad. More and more iPhone 4 users are telling me that they use the iPhone over iPad because of the beautiful screen and how the iPad just feels empty and flat. This is an inevitable upgrade that is going to force us early adopters who own an iPad and iPhone 4 to jump in line. That screen is addictive and we want it.
FaceTime
Apple’s FaceTime making its way to the next generation iPod touch (via a front-facing camera) and Macs (by the way of a software update) seem like logical steps, but what about iPad? Steve’s promise of “millions of FaceTime devices by the end of the year” is starting to sound empty as we approach September, but it’s this month that we’ll see more of those “millions” of devices available to the public when new iPods and a new iPad is released.
In Apple’s latest iOS betas, you can FaceTime someone based on their email address so devices that aren’t phones (everything but iPhone) will be able to use FaceTime no problem. This is when things really start getting interesting
New Form Factor
I’m doubtful of this one but it’s worth mentioning in this post. Apple generally waits two to three refreshes before redoing the overall hardware of its devices, but a thinner iPad may be in line that mimics much of Apple’s iPhone 4. Squaring off the design would help the device lay flat, but would also make it more susceptible to scratches. I’ve long wanted an iPad bumper case to help in the event of a drop and wish Apple would move away from steel aluminum as it’s so darn slippery. This is a maybe as Apple can legitimately call this a second generation iPad without modifying the outer shell. Of course, if it’s releasing a smaller screen size, it might be a good idea to change things up a bit to throw off the competition. We’ll see.
Why iPad 2 So Soon?
Other than throwing off the competition, there are huge gaps now between iPhone and iPad from the display to FaceTime and the competition in price and size from Kindle that leads me to an iPad refresh right before the holidays as a way for Apple to blow all previous numbers out of the water and make it impossible for competition to position themselves against Apple by including any of those features in their devices. The rumored BlackPad from RIM is said to include a camera, and the Cisco tablet will be smaller than the iPad and easier to carry. A 7″ iPad with FaceTime would do the trick to put both of those products out to pasture before they even ship.
What do you think?
Related GigaOM Pro Research: Can Anyone Compete With the iPad?
I just asked myself a question concerning the iPad and the iPhone 4. If this is true and Apple will reveal iPad 2 on the short terms, this could explain the delaytime of the iPad import within the Netherlands a bit.
The iPad just arrived a couple of weeks within the Netherlands after it was announced several months ago. The iPhone 4 was announced far after the iPad and seemed to be available before or even with the iPad over here.
Is it possible that the amount of produced iPad’s was a lot less by purpose compared with for example iPhone 4 just because iPad 2 is around the corner?
Mmm.. some things worth thinking about…
This is SO not going to happen. Why would apple come out with a new version of the iPad? They cannot even fill the orders of the current iPad.
Will they come out with a 7″ version? Maybe, but if you think they will have a new version of the 9″ iPad, you are dreaming. They will refresh it in the April time frame. Will it get a camera for face time? Maybe. I am not sure that is a slam dunk, but it will probably happen. It will get the speed bump and more storage, but I doubt it would get the retina display because of cost. Apple never makes radical changes, especially to a best selling product. Frankly, I have face time on my iPhone and I barely use it, so I do not see it as a killer app for the iPad. Great addition, but the iPad itself is the killer app. If anything, I would like it to be lighter. I bet that will happen.
” Apple never makes radical changes, especially to a best selling product”
iPod Mini. Radically changed at the height of its popularity. With Apple, there are no rules.
You are kidding right? How many years did that take to happen? The iPad has only been out a few months. The OS has not even been properly updated yet and you still have people waiting for backorders. There is no radical change coming to the current iPad.
Your point could be well taken if Apple came out with a 7″ model, but your point makes no sense as it relates to the current iPad. Although I count the 7″ model as a maybe if for no reason other than buzz, I personally do not see the point of one really, and frankly I think the chances of that are on the low side. I don’t expect to see a revision to the current size iPad until the March/April 2011 timeframe and then it is going to be changes around the edges. Nothing radical.
Just to add two more point to why this is SO not happening:
1. Apple is after profits, not market share
2. Since #1 is true, why would Apple undermine its own profitability and release a smaller, less profitable version when they cannot even fulfill the demand for the more profitable version?
Not a chance that we will see a new iPad before the iPad refresh in 2011.
Adam’s wish list is just too long for a device coming out this year *and* selling for less than $499. If Apple does a 7″ iPad this fall it will
- be no less than $399
- have no more than 16 GB of memory at that price
- same RAM and CPU as the 10″
- same or less battery life
- same screen resolution
- no camera
- have a plastic enclosure or other ways to shave off of some cost
It will not be something that the original iPad is not. Its major benefits will be size and weight, and some savings.
And it will not be nearly as cheap as the Kindle. You have to realize that the original iPad is already a cheap device. Its priced aggressively and shows that Apple is willing to conquer market share. It’s the same price as the iPhone 4, but it’s a lot more hardware. iSuppli says the iPad base model costs $250 to make, while the iPhone 4 costs $200 to make. There’s no room for Apple to trim margings for an iPad mini. Those other features will come, but we’ll have to wait a few years for Moore’s Law to kick in.
It’s posts like these that are raising expectations before Apple’s keynotes. Then, when the actual product is announced, it will make perfect sense within Apple’s line-up, the geeks will be disappointed because it did not fulfill their spec fantasies, while the masses will buy like crazy.
It may very well happen and I expect it will only because Apple needs to stay ahead of the rest. I just played with a Samsung galaxy tab and it’s already better then an Ipad. The original ipad needs a camera and much more to stem the huge tides of new tablets about to hit.
There are coming out with the new IPad. With a 7″ screen. With USB support with an insertion of a disc as well. But you did not here this from me. It will look exactly like the iPhone 4 but bigger. Like the guy said on step brothers POW!!!!
Apple can so fill orders. In fact, their latest results showed that they sold much less iPads than analysts had expected. Hopefully people are smart enough to not get trapped in the same minefield Apple laid when they launched their iPhone which was lacking with every possible feature. Just look at the evolution of the iPhone and tell me why I should buy an iPad when I can buy a BlackBerry PlayBook, which from Day 1 will have all the features that the iPad SHOULD have had. Apple always screws people by releasing cr@p and then adding small improvements in small steps.
Ture
I agree that Apple should do most everything you said, but I’m not sure how I feel about a 7″ version…
While it would be more in line with the size of the Kindle, it just seems redundant compared to current iDevice offerings. If you want a smaller iPad, you buy an iPod Touch or iPhone. The biggest complaint when the iPad was announced was, “WTF. This is just a giant iPod Touch.” A 7″ model would draw even greater criticism and I can’t see there being a big market for it.
Totally agree with this!!
With a crisp, hi-res display, 7 inches i good enough for ‘full width’ content and much more comfortable than a 3.5in screen.
If you put a crisp hi res display then even a 7″ format iPad will cost more than the current iteration, especially when you consider that it will have to have a considerable spec bump in the RAM dept.
To be honest, there is no real evidence for an early refresh or new form factor beyond one rumour from an unspecified source. Everyone who is reporting on this is spinning it out of proportion, probably so that when any news (based on verifiable facts) is released that looks remotely like these “predictions” they can feel smug that they actually were remotely right. But then again, if a blind man fires off enough rounds he’ll eventually hit something.
I use my ipad mainly to read ebooks. I would replace my 9inch ipad with a 7incher in heartbeat. The iphone is to small to read comfortably, midway between the ipad and iphone sounds just right.
Yeah. Me too. And because of iPad, i always take the bus going home, instead of the train. This is for me to read the eBooks longer in my iPad. :D
adamsads,
I think weight and size are the number one gripe you hear from (potential) iPad customers (I’m trying to blank out the geeks here). There’s definitely room for several sizes, especially if we imagine a world where we’ll be surrounded by more and more multitouch devices for all kinds of work and play, making mousy PCs niche devices and smartphones just one in a long line of form factors. iOS is not quite ready for that, but it’s going there.
If, on the other hand, Apples decides that 10″ will be the one size that fits all, weight should become their number one priority (for next year’s model). The iPhone has hovered around the same weight (135 g) for 4 years because Apple figured that’s light enough, but I don’t think that would be acceptable for the 10″ iPad.
Weight isn’t the problem with it, it is the bulk of it because of its outer dimension it is just as hard for me to carry around as my laptop or a netbook which has more function and storage. Honestly anything under 5-6 lbs for most people is nothing to carry around so the weight on this is not a problem at all but neither is most laptops. $500 for 64 GB or $500 for 500 GB laptop wins for me. (for the geeks touchscreen is great but they all can do this, voice activated is next and so far MS is taking the lead in that.
Crazy prediction, won’t come true. Next iteration will be 12 months from last iPad Apple does not have the resources for an interim release given the other products and services due to be released. 7″ is an in-between nothing solution, like Dell’s failed in-between a phone and Ipad, utter rubbish. Don’t hold your breadth for this year release, next Jan it will be here.
Obviously.
iPad 2: available March 2011, $499, 9.7″ retina display, two cameras w/ FaceTime, cloud integration of some kind, and fully independent of PC
I really like the sound of that!
Jupp this is it. Apple will not hurry a release because of what any competitor do, or do not do. Apple have always set their own schedule, and made sure their products stand tall enough to be measured on their own.
Except I would not expect “fully independent” before iOS 5.0 comes to the iPad. And that I would expect is int he fall of 2011, unless Apple releases iOS 5.0 simultaneously for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch in summer next year?
Unless there’s a change in cloud access to media, there just doesn’t seem to be much reason to believe that Apple will make iPad/iPhone/i??? PC independent, or that the consumer would benefit from such a development. Further, the licensing agreements that Apple has negotiated (at least with the music labels) suggests that making the device PC independent would render that device one of the 5 authorized devices one is afforded under FairPlay. Apple wants you to buy more than 5 iDevices and computers. With a desktop, a laptop, an iPhone, and an iPad, one would have only one authorization left for another device.
I don’t think a 300 dpi display is in the cards for 2011. That display alone would cost thousands.
Think about it: Even a theoretical pixel doubled display of 2048×1536 pixels (which Apple will eventually use, but not next year) would
- only have 260 ppi, not 300 ppi like the iPhone
- have 3 times as many pixels as a 720p HDTV
- have 50 % more pixels than even a 1080p HDTV. What kind of content would you watch on that screen if 1080p looks blurry?
- have more pixels than any Mac Apple is selling today, except for the giant 27″ iMac.
The iPad as a device is seven times larger than the iPhone. You cannot put a Retina display on that size anytime soon.
This is something I’ve been thinking for while, I think physically this one will stay the same but some hardware upgrades with a better resolution.
One of the main reasons I’ve been thinking this is the fact that iOS 4 for iPad is delayed by sooo much, what are we on now? 4.0.2?
I first thought the idea of a slightly smaller iPad was much ado about nothing. But it does make sense as an easy device for some to handle, retina display included, and the price difference. It will definitely compete with e-readers.
And with a bunch of new tablets coming out soon, the smaller iPad will give them an even bigger hurdle to overcome in addition to the bigger iPad.
Timing is everything. Apple seems to be taking advantage of that fact and just may be the king of the tablet hill indefinitely.
But unless they move away from AT&T exclusivity, I’ll probably keep waiting.
Adam,
I have been saying for awhile now to my readers that a new form factor is in the works and Facetime is on the way. I just did a post and gave my 4 predictions for the next iPad (based on user feedback and my own gut feeling):
1. Flat back. The new iPad will have a flat back instead of rounded.
2. Front facing camera. It’s not a phone so I feel that it would have a front-facing camera rather than both back and front.
3. Retina Display. Obvious for better resolution.
4. Dual Speakers. This would greatly enhance the sound.
Here’s the post: http://www.tcgeeks.com/the-ipad-version-2-what-will-it-have/
Thank you Shane. Although, I usually get worked up by comments linking to other’s posts, I’m glad you shared a few of the points in the comments.
It’s great to hear of another Mac Geek on the same path that I was when writing this. Have a great day!
I can’t see them coming down to any where near the Kindle’s price point, especially if the inevitable RetinaLite display goes into it. The Kindle is basically an optimised single function device and doesn’t compete directly with the iPad.
I’ve just unsubscribed from this site’s feed. You guys are morons.
First, iOS 3.2 doesn’t have resolution independence, only 4.0 does. Existing iPad apps will need to be recoded and the UI’s will need to be updated. It’s not going to “just work”.
In one breath you say they’re going make a 7″ model to hit a lower price point and in the next you say it’ll be a retina display. A 7″ retina display with twice the pixel density will absolutely cost more the the current 9.7″ display.
And why on earth would they go with a 7″ display anyway? The iPhone and iPod fit in your pocket, the iPad doesn’t. A 7″ iPad still isn’t going to fit your pocket, so what value does it add? You’re going to have to use it just like you would a 9.7″ display, so why on earth would you opt for a smaller screen? With no added value from a 7″ screen, why would Apple go through the trouble? They just released the iPad in April, the iPhone 4 in July and now iPods in September. Their supply chain can’t pivot that fast, especially when they’re already experiencing supply issues.
You don’t like steel? Well, they just bought LiquidMetal so you’re in for a disappointment. Besides, steel is sleek and sexy. Buy a case. All of their products are adopting the metal casing. Pay attention.
No, there will be no iPad 2 in 2010. iOS 4 is coming to the iPad in November, which will add enough new shine to attract some of the hold-outs. The iPad has enough momentum on it’s own to crush the competition this holiday season. iPad sale are going to jump all on their own and then 4 months later we’ll see a new model. Right on schedule. The iPad doesn’t have any competition at the moment, so why would Apple alter their comfortable release schedule and spit in the face of all the early adopters? Do you remember when they dropped the iPhone 1 price by $200 within the first year? They had to hand out $200 gift cards to everyone who already purchased. I think they learned their lesson.
You guys are late to every story and the writing sucks. I suggest you take “Apple” out of your name because you clearly don’t know Apple.
Bravo friend!
I agree 100% anyone who thinks that there is a new IPAD coming is crazy.
What is the added value of a smaller Ipad? 7 inch? no steel?
as for facetime:
i have an iphone 4 outside the US and facetime doesn’t work in my country so it is related to the carrier you are using .so it means they would have to reprogram facetime to work without a carrier.
so the only added value of this ipad would be the front camera?
if Apple wanted to put a camera in the ipad they could have done it from the start.
so i am willing to bet that you won’t see a new ipad before at least a year. but i am sure that on the holiday season there will be a price drop of at least a 100 bucks to beat the “competition”.
it’s better for apple to make a drop in the price for the ipad than to recreate another ipad that would be cheaper.
Too many good rumors for a 7″ iPad. I think they want to pump out millions more and 9.7″ screens are in too short a supply. I think Apple wants a lower price point – without actually lowering prices on an existing product. A 7″ is a paperback reader; a 9.7″ is an entertainment/game device. They’ll have the same 1024×768 pixel screen. Sure the devices can pinch hit for the other, but Apple wants you, in your own mind, to think “I could use one for this and another for that”. Apple wants to sell your family multiple pads, maybe one for every room, maybe more. Family money is being transferred from one entertainment category to others and Apple wants to be there when your family makes that decision. Think of the profits. Apple is also in a tough arena with mobile devices and tablets and wants to step up the model cycle. Past behavior is not a predictor of future.
Love all the people here who are so sure of themselves about what Apple will and will not do. Still willing to bet there wont be a camera iPad within a year?
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/09/10/apple_to_move_aggressively_on_facetime_camera_equipped_ipads.html
Actually iOS 3.2 is just as resolution independent as iOS 2.0. And as we all known virtually all apps, even those built way back in 2008 for iOS 2.0 works, with resolution independence in place, on iPhone 4 running iOS 4.
So you are the one in error. When the iPad 2 comes with retina display all old apps do will “just work”.
There is no resolution independence in iOS whatsoever. You clearly do not understand the term.
You just read my mind perfectly… and I mean PERFECTLY. This site is horrible based on this post, they have no idea what they are on about. I am 15 years old and will be in year 10 by 2011. I have had my iPad for school for about 4 months now and iPhone 4 for about 2 months, as soon as I got my iPhone 4 the only time I really used my iPad was for school work at school and sometimes for homework and I’m quite certain that a similar patter would apply to many other iPad owners whether school is replaced by work or not. So as a result of that certain features of iPad become very important to maintain a strong stance in the market. To me the keyboard absolutely must stay the same size or become full sized which means the screen must follow the same principals… stay the same size or get slightly bigger. Luckily I owned a Netbook before that, iPad and Netbooks have a very similar sized keyboard so I felt right at home with the keyboard as soon as I did some school work on it. If the idea of a 7″ iPad were true only money infused fools would buy this, or maybe some little kids who think that a 7″ iPad is cool would want it as a present, they would not consider usability (to small for any real work, to big for most pockets).
Apple shipped millions of iPhone 4′s, hence Apple shipped “millions of FaceTime devices by the end of the year”. Therefore that statement is not hallow even if Apple ships no other FaceTime-ready device this year.
I meant to make this point too! Glad you caught it!
Also, “iPhone 4 users are telling me that they use the iPhone over iPad because of the beautiful screen and how the iPad just feels empty and flat”. Anyone telling you that is an idiot. The iPhone 4′s pixel density is amazing, but it doesn’t allow you to fit more content on the screen.
How is the ability to view your inbox and email side-by-side suddenly nullified because the iPhone 4 has more pixels?! Or having both your contact list and contact details in view? The ability to read a web page without zooming?
If you think “the iPad just feels empty and flat” then someone should crack you over the head with one.
Hey Brian, do you happen to have a blog?
You said “The iPhone 4′s pixel density is amazing, but it doesn’t allow you to fit more content on the screen.”
Actually yes it does. The increased pixel density allows for use of much smaller fonts and ui elements.
I discovered this after setting iBooks to the smallest font available, while the font is absolutely tiny, it is perfectly readable without squinting or eye strain.
The main issue is for the average user, once you get used to a higher resolution screen, it’s very hard to go back. I like the iPad’s functionality, but I pretty much prefer my iPhone 4 most of the time because it’s just more “fully loaded” as well as being higher resolution and more portable. And I will have my iPhone with me always, as it is my phone, so unless the iPad has a substantial value add, it’s a PITA to carry around, frankly. And if I’m not carrying the iPad around, and am stationary, I’d prefer to use my MBP — the tweener aspect of the iPad was just screwed up by the much improved iPhone. To me, when I upgraded to iPhone 4, I pretty much stopped using the iPad because it just wasn’t adding enough to justify carrying around, when the iPhone now does so much so well. I definitely agree that the iPad needs an upgrade.
What is this obsession of writers with the phrase “form factor” anyway? Can’t you at least be creative and use other (and better) words? Such as design, package, dimensions, size, or even (horrors!) simply form?
Best reasons for 7″ iPad:
- Keeping the same total number of pixels, there will be no need for dev app tweaking.
- Most of the inside parts will be identical to current.
- R&D = new case, new screen, new battery, a few new internals; DONE
- Take the $$$ from the competition (see Dell streak and other clones.)
- Extend mkt share and profit share domination by another 2 years…
An iSight Camera connecting to the dock connector would be doing a lot in the meantime
YES! This is what I have been thinking.
I am hoping that Apple will releases some type of small camera that connects to the iPad’s dock connector and allows me to use FaceTime. I use FaceTime once a day to communicate from Russia to the US and would love to use my iPad while sitting in my apartment and only use my iPhone 4 while walking about town or at work.
And if you are wondering how I use FaceTime while walking around town, I have a Huawei E858 using a MTS SIM card connected by 3G that allows FaceTime on my iPhone 4 to work flawlessly.
Lack of a front-facing camera is the biggest shortcoming of the current iPad.
Apple needs to get that camera on the iPad ASAP
Totally agree, facetime and is critical to the iPad, whether we think we need it or like it or not.
7″ kinda makes sense but it’s too in-between a phone and the iPad, so would it have a phone? Too risky in my view, Dell streak will prove it’s a dud idea.
Retina for the iPad could be do-able, just think mass volume and that brings down the cost. The only cost is to the environment all the natural resources to make these devices is really eating away supply and thus will eventually affect price. Retine would be truly amazing on a 9″ iPad though you can bet that is there hope. The other benefit of 7″ is that it could be true wide screen format, just not convinced it will happen and definitely not this year, if it does, I’ll eat my iPad!
I recently read a story about the iPad: http://www.bloggingjustaboutapple.wordpress.com
Interesting post. I’ll wait for an some future iPad that is designed for creating rather merely accessing mixed media, as now— a tablet with jacks enough to capturing every type of media with a processor powerful enough to process them on the go.
I think that that’s great that Apple is working on another release of the iPad. I don’t understand why they would make the screen smaller though, I think they should make it larger and I think that they should consider adding drawing features to it too so that it would make a great book reader and also a wonderful sketchpad. The screen should be larger for ease of readability, otherwise you’re getting back to just having a fancy cell phone (so what).
Will I cannot see why they would produce a 7″, but face talk would be cool over wireless.
iPad 2.
•Retina display
•32GB 64GB 128GB $499-$829
•Same two cameras that are on the iPhone 4
•intel i3 processor
•9.7in model
bahh intel i3 processor? haha no. ARM processors are about 10X more efficient in performance per watt. you would get less then 1 hour of battery life with a traditional mobile intel processor in the iPad. Ain’t happening. It will probably come with a new updated ARM processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, or possibly dual core.
uh, excuse me, but i dont think that apple would make an iPad with 13 processor, dual hd cameras, retina display, in addition to being an new apple product that everybody will buy when its released, with double the memory for every model, for the same base price as last year.
everybody that thinks that the iPad will have a front facing camera is a moron. What, are u gonna hold up your huge iPad up just to take a picture? no thanks. also, retina display doesnt make sense unless they make the base model 1000$. The retina display on iPhone 4 put up the price about a hundred dollars. multiply that by 3 or 4? i dont like the odds. 7″ is also ridiculous. the iPad is already considered a big itouch. making it only 2 times bigger? uh-uh. sorry, losers, but you’re all wrong.
i meant back facing, srry :)
Hmm… 2 rumors, a smaller iPad and a fuller-featured iPod touch.
Wait a minute, maybe they’re the SAME product!
Think about it. The iPod touch is so much more than an iPod. With a retina screen, it’s more like a mini-iPad anyway, so why not make the switch? What the heck, include a 3G model and gyroscope.
This bold move would place the iTouch firmly in between the iPhone and iPad. And fulfill both rumors.
I WANT ONE!
I disagree. Apple spent a long time determining the specs for the iPad. They normally do not act like the Windows folks and make a different model every month. A nine inch screen shows enough without being too small (smartphone and iPod touch) or too big (laptop).
A 7-inch iPod makes a lot of sense. It’s coat-pocket sized, so it’d be easier to carry about than the current iPad and the larger screen would make reading and productivity uses much more enjoyable. I love my iPod touch, but that screen is awful small.
I also suspect that it’d be an excellent competitor to the latest Kindle. The latter is also coat-pocket sized, which I find appealing. But because it needs a keyboard, the screen is only six-inches diagonally. Not needing a keyboard, Apple can package a 7-inch screen in that same form factor.
I’d like to see more RAM (same as iPhone 4) and gyroscope added to iPad. A camera would be nice but I wouldn’t I imagine Apple would like to keep something in reserve for iPad 3.
If they do a 7-inch iPad it will almost certainly be the same 1024×768 so the apps all just work.
The main reason I could see for a 7-inch model would be because they can’t get enough 10-inch screens. And perhaps to lower the cost of entry for education and convert more $299 iPod touch sales into $399 iPad sales.
Retina Display on iPad has to be a 2011 thing.
Whether FaceTime ever works well on iPad is also up in the air.
This is absolute rubbish!
This is the least informative, crummily written, illogical and inaccurate piece I’ve read in some time. Why are you in this business?
I have never heard Steve say anything like “We’re releasing the next iPad today before our competitors have even caught up with the first generation.” Where does he use this line?
Mac and iOS are not resolution independent.
WTF is “steel aluminum”? They are aluminum-backed.
Great comments. With the new iPad perhaps we will see VZ as a service provider!
The notion that battery life would be unchanged seems to defy common sense. A 7″ iPad would have 60% of the internal volume of the 9″ iPad, so the battery would be about 60% the size and so 60% capacity. A 7″ iPad would get 6 hours compared to the 10 hours of the current iPad (everything else being the same).
I don’t see Apple making that compromise.
“A 7″ iPad would get 6 hours compared to the 10 hours of the current iPad (everything else being the same).”
Everything else being the same is what would defy common sense. Why would a 7″ screen draw the exact same power as a 9″?
Yea but if you look at the insides of the iPad there is a lot of wasted space (I would estimate about %50 wasted space). They could easily fit the same battery in a 7″ device. If they square it off there will be more space for batteries.
here is a teardown of the iPad to show how small the battery actually is..
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad-3G-Teardown/2374/1
A 7″ screen of same resolution has the same transistor count. The actual illumination needs might be reduced by an equal 40%, providing improvements. If they use the same processors (at same speed) and so on, the power draw would be the same.
Point taken on the possible volume wasted on the current model. I thought it was filled to the brim, but perhaps all it can be all made to fit in about 40% less space to preserve the battery.
I would buy a 7 inch iPad with FaceTime if the price was lower. If they could manage to get a 3G edition of iPad out, even with a small amount of memory, I would be willing to drop up to $500 for it.
Interesting stuff, I only hope that it can be used in a more useful way, software capability to assist the development of the paperless office.

IF a 7″ iPad allows them to get to $400 and lower then it makes sense from a pricing standpoint. It makes it more difficult for competitors to undercut them.
I wouldn’t hold my breath for an iPad retina display. YOu have to do the math on the number of pixels required to match iPhone 4 screen and the gpu power needed to move them and the price of that gpu power not to mention heat generated etc. I don’t think those relationships are automatically linear and easily extrapolated from the iPHone 4.
Ipad has 5x the screen area of the iPhone 4 at the very least. So you need at least 5x the pixels to be in the ballpark of an iPHOne 4 retina display. You’re talking a resolution north of 2500×1600.
Given similar gpus between the two I don’t think that’s going to happen. And they can’t dramatically increase gpu power without increasing price.
Then of course they have to keep an eye on heat generated.
I just don’t see it although I’m no expert on current mobile graphics tech.
No doubt they can improve the resolution of the IPad given the iPHone4′s resolution is a bit higher. But I doubt they can improve it enough to get the same pixel density of the Retina display.
think about it. a retina display on a big screen will make up for the money saved by size. thats what made the i phone 4 soooo expensive, retina display. also, a camera and facetime would mess up memory and price. facetime requires a wifi connection. a step up would be making facetime for 3G. this would make the ipad 2 almost 150 bucks more. i doubt this will ever happen.
Dumbest column ever. Obviously the author has no clue about the cost and difficulty involved in trying to drive a large screen Retina Display. Maybe he should get a clue before posting crap. Second, considering the iPad has not been rolled out in all markets yet, he is making the colossal leap that Apple is willing to give the finger to a large customer base and jade the existing customer base. I could go on but these two points are the most glaring. I would not take much of what this author says as serious.
Ow yea! Apple will put facetime on everything and mKe a 7″! Its logical and with the economy and such a 7″ would be able to fit budgets. I’d bet a ipad2 7″ launch of early nov mid oct so people go completely nuts – typing this on my iPad,
The real problem is lack of full ms office software on the ipad. If they can make it a bit more useful for work I would buy the present ipad. Otherwise, my original Iphone works just fine and does all that I need. No need for IPad or IPad2 (just big heavy iPods).
Use the LogMeIn Ignition app and use Office virtually. I also want MS Office natively, but LogMeIn Ignition does a good enough job for me to get my work done from any where in the world, assuming I have a stable enough Internet connection.
My prediction is same size, more ram, possibly better cpu, slightly better screen resolution (although no retina display), front camera (back camera is possible as well, but less likely), facetime, and will be released in early 2011.
7 in. is stupid because they already have the ipad and iphone/ipod touch. The ram will have to be upgraded given that the iphone has 512 mb while the ipad has only 256. The cpu will likely be upgraded because the iphone 4 has the same cpu as the ipad. The screen resolution will be upgraded given that the ipad now looks terrible next to the iphone 4, although a retina display is completely impractical for all the reasons listed above. The front camera and facetime are a given considering how many people want that feature, although I think a back camera would be less important because I could not see myself using my ipad over my phone to take pictures. It will also be released in early 2011 because apple always does an update one year after the last (although that is not always true for some of their macs).
What about support for Flash or USB jack?
The camera accessory connector already has a USB if you really must have it.
Not having Flash isn’t that noticeable to me either, mainly because there are so many available apps to help make up for the lack of Flash support.
A device like the iPad takes a long time to run from hardware design to sitting in the hands of a consumer. Apple has been working on the iPad 2 since at least a year before the iPad 1 shipped.
Here is what has likely happened: The iPad 1 development slipped, as many new projects do, but the iPad 2 would likely not slip as much, and so now the iPad 2 is biting at its heels – and is now only months behind the iPad 1.
For instance the iPad 1 only has 256 MB or RAM, while the iPhone 4 has 512 MB, with all the iPad hardware fit into the much smaller space. This makes the iPad 1 look pretty old.
A high density org display is a pipe dream.
The purpose is to make a smaller, lighter and less expensive ipad.
A 7 inch org display would make it more expensive then the iPad 9 inch.
Hence, for those of us waiting for a full 1080p org display, we have several years to wait.
I personally am waiting for a high end Android with a Tegra series chip and 1080p display. Why? Simply because not having access to a file system in the iPad really ruins the experience of using a Apple device. Also, I use small fonts and it looks terrible on the iPad.
I cannot belive what I am reading here. Why is everybody so bsessed with the weight of digital devices ? Do you have to work hard to carry an iPad around or to hold it while using. Is the computer-user per se a degenarated, weak couch potato ?
When I pay £499 for a piece of posh looking equipment I EXPECT it to put a certain weight into my hand. Anything elese would instantly turn the inpression round into tatty and cheap.
Tom
If the screen was smaller I would lose interest on buying it.
I like the screen, for me the size is perfect.
The could improve the weight and the screen resolution it will not be a retina display because that is impossible for a mobile device the resolution would be 2560 x 1920 and that is way too much
An i think that they will upgrade it but only in 2011
I love to buy a iPad but I miss the camera in front. I use Messenger and Skype a lot and it would be nice to sit on the couch and talk/see my friends and family. For traveling it’s even more useful.
7 inch? Maybe have to see and feel it to know if that size fits for me.
For the rest I don’t know if browsing the web is flawless with an iPad (flash etc). On my iPhone 3GS i notice some problems sometimes.
I am so close of buying a iPad now so it would be nice if Apple could tell us when we can expect a new iPad and what features it will have. So I can wait or buy. My last Macbook got an upgrade about 2 weeks after I bought one :(
I like the sound of a 7″ iPad – even through the 9″ ipad turns out to be a great size, I like a lot of folks, I felt it was too big when announced and even though I love my ipad that still bothers me. Buyer perception is huge in a product like this, and a 7″ devise just seem so much more sexy. Check out the Samsung Galaxy tab – it’s really darn cute and tempting even to an Apple fan like myself. Screen rez: I think they will stay at same rez in a 7″ – that still gives you a nicer, tighter pixel density unless Apple can source an amazingly cheap retina display to keep price down. FaceTime camera – I think we have to see this soon, the people DEMAND it!
I bet Apple release a no-cam 7″ and a new 9″ with cam – just to annoy us all and confuse us into which to buy. Just like the new nano vs new ipod Touch dilemma – Apple guides your buying decision to the “right” choice (ie: theirs) once again with feature-cripple jedi mind tricks!
go to apple.com and click “iPad” this november they ARE updating the iPad. Flat and squared edges, same size, no camera, but it is iOS 4.2 and multitasking, folders, and a “Printing Station”. another thing is the “airplay”. it seamlessly plays video. check it out for yourself. it does say just the software…look at the pics-I think i learned what squared means in kindergarten, fyi.
Some of the comments below are really out to lunch, if anything, I would say most of the people commenting negatively about this article are just a little upset because they already bought an Ipad, and these changes are going to make their device extremely absolete.
I would have to agree with everything that Adam has suggested, its inevitable. One person made a comment that apple wouldn’t want to update their device, because their current device is still profitable. however if you know anything about economics you must stay ahead of the trend, and not let your device fall to the waste side, and if apple doesn’t release their new device soon, they will give samsung (check out the new Galaxy Tab and then come back here and tell me apple can afford to wait until next april to release a new device) a foot hold on the tablet market, however if they release a new device sooner rather then later they they can essentially slam the door on samsung and other competitors, The only thing Im not too sure about is the timing, Apple can sometimes be stubborn when it comes to keeping with its own schedule (Example the delay between macbook pro i5/i7 update). but rest assured all these changes mentioned above will be their, and maybe even a few surprises – although unlikely, perhaps a phone feature to compete with the samsung galaxy tab. (probably not something that apple wanted to do, but are they expected to stand still, or are they expected to compete and supply the market with products in demands)
Alright, I’m on my iPhone 4 right now, the screen resolution is magnificent compared to any other smartphone I’ve seen, but being an iPhone fan makes me a bit jealous to the fact that samsung’s Amoled screen is wonderful and infinitely more colorful and much cheaper than the iPhones retina display the iPhone 4 has a 1 to 100 color ratio well samsung’s smartphones have a million to 1 color ratio compare them side by side and you will understand what I’m saying. So getting to the point if apple could integrate the amoled screen in the “new” iPad that could cut the costs of the product for everybody who would like to buy one.
P.s. For everyone who has not seen the amoled screen look at samsung’s “wave” or “galaxy”.
This is apple, it’s really hard to predict a release from them behind their curtains. As for looking and arguing about new features, its ridiculous, apple has constantly treated its users like babies when it comes to new technology. Will we get the latest and greatest? Nope. We’ll get a minor hardware update at best. Not until they get a real feel for the market will they start to take great stride in their product design. (For example, iPhone to iPhone 4) Even though it seems logical that apple should drop a new iPad by the end of this year, they simply almost 99% chance won’t. The reason for this is because they have a trend of making annual updates, not bi-annual updates. But, every night I read rumors and blogs in hopes to see that Apple will “unveil a new product” by this holiday season, if not…don’t wake me till Spring.
Hey Viet – Still think this isn’t happening???
Can anyone recommend good iPad portable speakers? The iPad speakers are weak and have zero bass.
Apple is loved and beats the competition by its hardware first, and only secondly by the software, I think it should be obvious to everyone. The iPhone 4 is their best product so far, and the best in the world. They must bring the other models up to that level and fast, no matter how good they were considered to be before iPhone 4 appeared. It is the smartest market move they can do to actually model their iPad 2 after iPhone 4, using the same design, the same materials, the same features, just a bigger screen. The retina display is their biggest sale point, so it absolutely must be on iPad 2. 10-inch is too unwieldly a size for a mobile device, 7-inch is a better fit.
Steve Jobs is a genius, first and so far the only one to recognize that a smartphone is not just another “cheap plastic” in your pocket. Like a swiss watch, it is a personal and personalized item, and it better be made out of the best available materials and technology (just take a look around how proudly people carry their iPhones in their hands). Specially for the high price the smartphones are being sold. The other manufacturers still don’t get it, that it’s the quality that drives Apple success. The other manufacturers can’t even begin to understand that spending extra $20 for a good case design and the quality glass screen for their smartphones/slates will help them to a much higher profits.
Why there is so much argument about the device size? The smart business move would be to introduce the iPad in few different sizes and even shapes for everyone’s preferences and likes. After all, isn’t that this approach is used in manufacturing and marketing of all products? Are we all wearing the same size pants, or drive the same cars, or work on the same laptops? Do we have to “re-invent the wheel” in basic business and common sense with every new device out there?
Some interesting thoughts on the next iPads here:-
http://brucethink.wordpress.com/2010/09/22/future-of-ipad-part-2/
Why doesn’t apple just make facetime a permenant app and design an external camera that connects to the power/ dock socket. they are just wasting money if the make a new iPad, There is nothing wrong with the current size, plus they wasted money on the new iPod shuffle. I also think the new iPod touch is great. I am not sure if i should wait for the iPad 2 or if I should just buy the current one. Someone, please reply back and tell me if i should wait or not
I’m really hoping for a Seven inch iPad – seems like a great size and very likely to me, looking at the excitement surrounding the Galaxy tab and a few other decent looking android tabs, plus the just-announced blackberry Playbook.
There’s a mockup of what the iPad 7inch should look like here:-
http://brucethink.wordpress.com/2010/09/22/future-of-ipad-part-2/
Hard to believe Apple would bother with a 5inch.
But a bigger, super-powerful iPad could be interesting for artists, architects etc…
See this post:- http://brucethink.wordpress.com/2010/09/25/the-ipad-pro/
This is one of the articles I read about the new iPad. I think I still want to get an iPad now since they are having a new software release with new features.
I think the only change we will see soon is facetime on iPad. Seems that everyone has forgotten that since day one everyone speculated that the ipad would have a front facing camera.
Remember the analysis from the pictures?
Remember that there is a space for a camera on the current ipad.
It is simple, Apple will add a front camera, lower the price of the current ipad just a little, charge the same as they are right now for the one with camera and that will give them another easy 6 months of absolute dominance.
I think the smaller screen is more wishful thinking than fact based, why would they want a smaller screen? People would get an iPod if they wanted a smaller screen.
The current iPad screen size and form fact is simply ideal. Only think missing for now and for a long future is a front facing camera and a GPS (for the wifi only models).
So December or January?
Do you think the new iPad would b able to print from device or wirelessly.
Hi
Excuse me if this is stupid but perhaps what should be happening with the screen is to lose some or all of the dead area around the display. Now I get this has many tech issues but it is something that has happened (as I recall) on the iPhone and would reduce device size considerably without necessarily stuffing actual display size. Sounds like there is room inside to compress the case so…
Maybe silly but..
Andrew
I like everything but the smaller screen
My screen is perfect
It’s all a matter of marketing, cost, timing and perceived value. Technically I would like to see an iPad with: 1 or 2 x USB connector, multiple format memory card reader, support of .xls, .doc, .txt, .ppt format, wireless flat mini keyboard support (optional), easier multitasking, touch sensitive zoom-in / zoom-out (camera + video), synchronization with outlook agenda + email (paid app?), more memory (128 Gb), dual core processor, less weight, better fall proof (a standard edition and a survival edition) and ideally I like to see that against the same price (so it will gradually become a mainstream mass market product and Apple can shift from making high profits on hardware to making profits on software).
Would be nice for Ipad 2. Hoping the bugs will be gone and a new camera would also be nice
how much will the ipad 2 cost
There won’t be a smaller iPad.
Steve Jobs has complained about the inferiority of smaller tablets. I think we’re more likely to see an added inch, which would go a long way in making it a greater/more effective creative tool.
I sincerely hope you’re right about gen2 coming out this year (wink, wink, Apple) because I’ve been holding out since I saw iPhone 4′s tech beat out iPad’s and I desperately want one.
I EXPECT LESS WEIGHT! =)
And i’m sure of it…
I have an iPhone 4 & love it, especially the display. My wife had my old 3GS and my iPhone 4′s display is so much better.
I would want an iPad with 3G, but after purchasing my iPhone right out, it’s just a bit too expensive. A 7″ version though would be very tempting to say the least. Let’s hope they produce one.
I’m fairly sure I would not want an Android phone or tablet. Yoo many gimmicks on then and not as secure as people think. I here it’s based on Linux. My son has a Linux mini laptop. I don’t personally like the OS myself. For me I love the class act that is Apple. The iPhone, iPad & iPods are just so way ahead.
It is truly unfortunate apple does not support adobe flash, it would b nice to see a camera and a USB drive and be able to support doc. and ppt. on my iPad but the fact that I can’t use have of the websites I go to because apple doesn’t support flash is so depressing
@tom
$350-400
same aluminum casing
same battery life possibly more or less (smaller screen)
same cpu and ram as 10′ (1.5 GHz at least 1GB ram)
web cam, possible 3-5MP cam
more hd screen , possible retina
1 lb
better iOS or OS X mini
and to 3rd comment, iphone 4 is 320ppi
pwnd by a 12yr old
I’m glad they are coming out with a 7″ version but I wish they would keep the 9″ version with the upgraded features as well. First of all I think its fair to assume that a large amount of people in the market for an ipad already own the ipad/iphone but would prefer to read on something much larger. I know my mother is very uncomfortable viewing things even on a 15′ laptop she just isn’t used to it.
I also feel the Ipad found a HUGE niche in assistive technology. There are some awesome apps available (also on ipod) however many people with motor coordination issues (such as my daughter) find the ipod too small. (imagine a stroke victim trying to use an ipod vs. 7-9″ ipad) Comparable assistive devices cost in access $5-$7000.
My neighbor also built his wife’s ipad into the kitchen cabinet which they use as a sound system and for her recipes while cooking etc.. if you are not holding the device in your lap/hands directly I find the larger size more appealing for purposes of reading from a distance like that or in your car as a gps/sound system which I am also now seeing in some customized vehicles. I would just assume go with something totally pocket size (ipad, iphone) if they drop to 7″
Firstly, with Apple there is never any proof of anything until a product is released (unless a product tester gets drunk).
A 7″ iPad? This is highly unlikely to happen. There’s all sorts of theories as to why this is so, but the most convincing is based on something Jobs said in a recent meeting with investors: a 7″ screen is less than half the size of the iPad’s current 9.7″ screen.
“No it isn’t!”, I hear you scream, “the iPad has 9.7 inches of screen, not 14!”. True. But screens are measure diagonally. Thus, if you want to work out the actual ‘real estate’ of a device’s screen, you must turn to high school trigonometry. I refer you to this blog post on the Guardian, where the author uses a simple application of Pythagoras’ to note that a 7″ screen is just 45% the size of a 9.7″ iPad screen.
Now take a simple iPad App such as Mail. You’ve just received an email and you want to reply, and so up pops the multi-touch keyboard, taking up half the screen. This still leaves you with the equivalent space of an entire Galaxy Pad – almost like you have two of them, one for the keyboard and the other for the text. If iPad 2 were available in 7″ form, it would really defeat the original point of the iPad 1; to take the genius of a smartphone and apply it to a larger device.
So iPad 2 at 9.7″ and 7″ versions? Never going to happen.
A smaller sized i-pad……. eventually that will happen. But let’s not lose sight of the fact that Apple depend on after-market manufacturers to enhance the usefulness of their products and as such, typically run with a similar shape and size for at least 3 generations.
Answer: New MAc book air 11″. Now we have something usefull. IPAD is NOT a laptop just another accesorie. IPAD 2 is going to be released with the iphone 4 updates in the next 2/6 months just for family feeling.
What the ipad 2 needs to have….
front and back camera
adobe flash capable
two screen sizes
usb port
optional physical keyboard accesory
i think that the new ipad is prety cool i’m getting it!
Oh my god, I’ve been wanting an iPad 2 since I heard about the iPad 1 lol because I knew there would be tons of great updates. I totally agree with this article and I think it’s a logical move for apple. If they do release the iPad 2 right before Christmas, I am sure as hell buying one!!
Awesome.
Me too they will just for the money, all apple is doing is creating something crazy like the iPad with no facetime or cameras and everyone buys it then holidays come around and all of a sudden updated everything that’s y I waited for this Christmas all these other guys don’t no when the iPad 2 is really comin 2 months before it comes out apple doesn’t even know they just go at there own(fast) pace and when it comes out it comes out which I believe is gonna be just in time for the holidays I believe!!
Personally, I’m looking forward more to the Blackberry Playbook offering.
I like my iPad and my iPod Touch 4G over my iPhone 4G, because they both have 64GB of memory, compared to 32GB and the iPod’s better for playing games on the move, due to it’s light weight and its more comfortable shape to hold and that’s all I really care about. I only got the iPhone because of it’s camera and it can take pictures and connect to the 3G Network, but the Nokia N8 has a camera with over than two times better quality and more fps in video. It also has a faster 3G connection. The iPad is better for playing games at home because of the larger screen. Also, if you put a screen protector on the iPhone 4G, it screws up the colour display, because of the retina graphics.
Im shocked that you sheep still dont get Apple.
Clearly your brains are disproportionate to your wallet size.
Nothing they do with the ipad 2 will not have been available on the original Ipad it is just another marketing tool to get more profit. Drones.
I must say, all those who claim that a 7″ iPad would not be a product of interest, are blind to the current economic situation. Shortly after the recession, not all are prepared to spend $499 on a tablet that, in my opinion, is not too different from a perfectly good iPod touch or iPhone.
However, if they were offered the same thing at a cheaper price they would atleast consider the product
Overseas, the iPhone 4 is almost $600-700 (because they are sold unlocked) which is an ammount that NO ONE is prepared to spend. However, a $400 iPad is something that is thinkable and a little more affordable
I-Pad from my personal point of view, should be the technology to substitute laptops, especially in my case of using Virtual Computer Citrix.
In our business that deals with services, it is nice presenting to potential clients, by handing to them the I-Pad, and also it is nice having a bigger screen for working easier if you are commuting a lot.
I read all of your comments and agree, but I personally believe there should be discrimination of its kind to various sizes 7″ 10″ and 12″ for example depending on the sector of each potential consumer stands, not to alternate the size in each new edition.
My “favorite” I-pad would be the one, that will make me “get rid of my laptop” and have all files on my VM and teleconference with the companies offices, long battery, i-phone screen, better speed.
To sum up I believe Apple can manage huge growth by providing the below:
1. Screens variations from 7″ to ….I do not know max 14″ let me say
2. Longer battery-sustainable
3. Invest in speed of processors and remain green
4. Apart from the usb and camera, a network cable to be able to fit into it for companies that do not have wireless, so VM also to work on the I-Pad without wireless for security reasons, as some companies may express
I dont get it, why come up with a new ipad with a camera if you can download pics of of your original camera…???
How much dose the ipad 2 64 gs and wifi cost
hey guys, take a look at this: http://gizmodo.com/5667101/there-will-never-be-a-7+inch-ipad
Steve Jobs already said there will NEVER be a 7 inch iPad, unless it comes with sandpaper to sand ur fingers for 7 inch.
Liquid metal or carbon fiber iPad, maybe, and that will make the iPad lighter than the current Aluminum.
Cameras, someone mentioned it would be dumb to actually hold the tablet and take pictures, isnt it?
Hopefully the new iPad comes with better ram tho..
Hmmm, funny that crazy ole Stevo now thinks a 7″ tablet size is good enough for the iFad. I thought that size was incapable of being designed adequately and would be D.O.A? Nope, just more whining and erratic behaviour by a man who is supposed to be professional and representing a world class company. Personally I’d rather not have to carry a brick in my hand just to do what a lighter and more versatile netbook could accomplish. 7″ tablets differentiate themselves dimensionally and ergonomically. RIM is gonna kick Apple’s a*s with their QNX OS. It’s open, ultra-reliable (used in nuclear power, space stations, LHC, CERN, ect.), super developer friendly and cross-compatible with many computer languages. This means it can run almost any Android app. Finally, it features the best hardware shown to date and is priced less then the iPad. This isnt vapourware either, its the real thing :). So in the meantime, take it easy on the Apple Kool-Aid everyone.
Please find a solution to support Flash media files. Whats wrong with these people..?? Can anybody tell Apple and Adobe to sit down all together, have a nice cup of tea and produce a flash player for iphone and ipad.?? Come on guys , really, its not about size, its how people use it.,,
Its insane !!!!
I really do not like how it is coming out so fast, the iPad just came out. Especially since the hardware is going to be changed, eveything else apple has made didn’t change until the 3rd or 4rd generation. That way the consumer will actually be able to enjoy that fact that they have the newest item out there. I don’t think they should change the hardware because it is not fair and if so they should allow the consumers that just bought an iPad be able to make changes to their current one. For example if the ipad2 has a camera there should be a way to get a camera on the ipad. That will save everything
Can all of you wannabe apple gurus give it a rest already?! You are behaving like five year old.
Guys just get the Samsung Galaxy Tab. I was really having issues deciding and figured the one thing keeping me away from it was the keyboard size. I can buy a physical keyboard for this. It has all the ports that Ipad 2 is suppose to have. It has Android 2.2. You want Flash we have it. The best part. If you are thinking about going 3G then you can decide later. The tab has the equipment built in. It has a front facing camera. It’s 7″ and I can stick it in my pocket easily. You can try Verizon MiFI for a month and if you don’t like it dump the plan and use wifi. Screw Steve Jobs. He wants to be a control freak let him. You don’t have to be controlled by him.
maybe they want to release a new one that actually works as advertised? The original is plagued by wi-fi and video performance problems, that Mac die-hards ignore or like to pass off as rare. There are known problems and limitations of the 1st round, and as always, why make one, when you can make 2 for twice the price and sell it again to the same base?
To me, it seems like the Android devices are making up some serious ground in the competition with Apple. Also, it seems like Android is quicker to adopt newer technologies and processor speed. Android devices with a 7″ screen are already readily available from Chinese importers for $125-200 per unit. They have all the bells and whistles that Apple does plus a few that don’t. I would be so worried about the BlackPad, but all the other big name companies that are ready to put their logo on one of the Chinese models. I also see makers like Dell and HP ready to invade this space.
The I Pad2 should have a SD card slot which is more important than 2 cameras. The 7″ screen is also a great feature for traveling.
It would be great if it would come out before Valentines Day.
Thanks
Sandy
7″ is the perfect size for a man to put in his jacket pocket or a women throw it in her bag. I witnessed a man forget his change at Chucke Chesses because his hands were full and he was so fixated on not losing his Ipad. Ipad is too large to be practical. On the ebook side anything eqauls the Ipad even if the screen is better on the Ipad because it is too expensive as an ebbok reader only. The ball and chain App store tie is also a big turn off along with the Itunes shackle. Apple works well selling it the simple minded followers of name brands but it does not win me.
It is December 12,2010 guess this article was wrong on the release before the holidays. I am so tired of the media always overrating and over raving things just because they say Apple.
Let me know when Verizon gets the iPhone deal. Then I’ll listen to all the other stuff.
Need only one Adobe Flash,Flash,Flash!!!!!!
Agreed… Flash, Flash, Flash…
BUT for me to buy an iPad it needs much more…
1. usb for power (replace proprietary connection)
2. hdmi for media
3. disconnect iTunes (allow easy access for usb storage !)
4. removable/replaceable battery
5. HD screen 7 inch is perfect size (if I need more will use my laptop !)
6. robust proven professional operating system (iOS has a ways to go !)
Oh wait this sounds like a Blackberry Playbook ! guess I will get that 1.
Merry Christmas !
will the ipad 2 have a camera?
when did they averlanch the ipad 2
I’m really excited for the release of the iPad 2! My parents said that the day it comes out, I’m going to get it! It’s going to be sooo awesome! All my friends will be totally jealous!
They told me you were too spoiled and it was about time you earned some money to buy your own gadgets rather than having them “pander to that little parasite”. (Their words, not mine.)
If you ask me i say to be able to call people, it’ll probably be on speaker but it’ll still be cool. And, if not all ready, to be able to text people on it too.
Upgrades really do not matter to a small business that has AT&T with 10 iPhones and cannot tether to iPads. We will continue to use laptops, since it is more economical.
It’s past the holidays and Apple still hasn’t released it. If they are waiting that long, they must be planning something big for it.
I think it is a good idea to put an USB Hub on the iPad 2. It gives more functionality to the b2b segment and will help to sell even more than the iPad 1.
Unbelievable. Are you bored?
Hey everybody. How would you like to listen to my delusions, too?
McDonnell Douglas is going to release the first single-person transport capsule to the american market. Why this is going to happen? Because they build things that fly, and Boeing didn’t even think of that. And just so Mr. Douglas can say his famous one-liner “We build things that fly!” we are going to see this very soon.
Here are the features:
- It flies
- Supports airbags and emergency parachhute
- GPS navigation interface to the new iPad2 that has been introduced in this article
- iPod (Generation 17 1/2) interface for your favorite music. Note that this is not out yet either, but the author will hopefully tell us about it very soon
- it lands
Isn’t it great? What do you think?
:)
Wow…tough choice. I am sooo eager to buy the ipad now, but i know that Apple will release the Ipad2 soon. Im thinking of waiting but its hard when ive been wanting the Ipad sooo bad! Any help? give me some tips :)
Of coarse Apple is going to update it. Lots of competitors are pouring in, so they either update the iPad or discontinue it, and they would never discontinue a good product.
I’d like to discourage anyone to purchase on iPad/2 until Apple will reduce it’s price. If people would just stop buying it, and instead complain about the price being too high, they’d surely reduce it. Apple would not throw out so many devices.
Why is everyone comparing the ipad to a kindle?!?!?! that cant be done! a kindle is a freaking e-book reader. thats what it does! and ipad is a multimedia apparatus that can do basically everything. (i do not say that kindle sux, its awesome! but it cant be compared)
I don’t think the ipad2 will be released in 2010. #hindsightis2020guy
add USB = OK
do not speakers in front = NO OK
i pads r just big ipod touches…….duhhhh
iPad 2 should come with a camera.
Why didnt they just put a camera in the ipad first generation instead of making it so difficult on revealing it on the second one? Thats waisting peoples money and time because now they have to sit and wait on the second generation to come out. The ipad also needs to come with some type of way to put in cds and dvds can this get done somehow.
eeeek!! well It will not be something that the original iPad is not.
The new screen size is gonna be awesome the portability is gonna be much better.
I think that they are going to stick to the 9″ screen. Tim Cook talks aboute Android tablets: “And so you wind up having a size of a tablet that is less than what we believe is reasonable, or one that we provide what we feel is the real tablet experience. So basically, you end up with a sort of scaled-up smartphone, which is a bizarre product, in our view” Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/zd/20110118/tc_zd/259497
Well… I’ve read what you think, and I think you are off the mark by somewhere between a little and a lot. Why? Well, because if something about a design is winning, then it’s likely to be retained. If something is a trend in Apple devices, then it’s likely to remain a trend. So what do I see? I see a camera, higher resolution screen, and retaining the current formfactor. I see slightly better battery life, and an expandable memory. And I see it at about the same price point as now… which will kill competition dead. Apple is not into making something cheaper to beat off competition… it is about attacking competition by innovation (which does not always succeed, but it succeeds more often than not), making for better bottom line profit than price-based competition (which is following, not leading). I guess we’ll see who’s right, hey?! (And, by the way, I am NOT an Apple user).
I LOVE the 9″ screen!
I don’t want the 7″
UGH!!!!!!
If the only difference was the size and deprh i would just buy the cheaper ipad 1st gen instead of paying much more forjust size
is it true it comes with an integrated camera and that it can be used as a computer?
ipad is not going to get retina display. it will be the same resolution as the iphone4.
why not? the iphone 4 has retina display, so it makes sense for the ipad to have the same quality.
Flash player pls
There is one big disadvantage of IPAD and this is a lack of USB port. This keep me away from purchasing an IPAD. One of the reasons I would buy a tablet is that I can do banking while on a business trip. For this purpose I need an USB in order to use my electronic certificate /signature/. And IPAD does not have it and from what I am reading they do not intend to. Pity.
when is the 2 genration coming out
I can’t wait for the i-pad 2 to come out…I agree with all of the changes but one…….They should keep the screen size the way it is..! It is a very important tool to have a larger screen, looking at the whole webpage….or showing thngs to a group of people on the spot…it is probably one of the top reasons alot of pople have the i pad and not another tablet….So ya change is good , but some things should stay the same…I will not buy the i pad if the screen is smaller…i will get a tablet that is more flexible to the majority!
hoow much will it cost?
Adam says, “I expect Apple to release another iPad this year.” Well, it is now Feb 1, 2011 and still nothing.
I think all of this is fine but why haven’t they come out with a way to run flash drive. Some of the others have why not the iPad. That would make it really unique.
I need to know when & what date is the new I Pad will be in the store
I was waiting to get the ipad 2 but I did not want the screen to be any smaller. I think they should keep it the same size.
They can do everything else they want to do to it but I want the screen to be smaller.
how much would it be my sister said it would be $199.99
I’ve read and found that iPad 2 is going to be released this March, I don’t necessarily believe it since the iPad was just released last year. But knowing Apple and how the iPad users got disgruntled, they have a chance to deliver it.
However, reports and reviews that i found over the internet makes it seem like buying the iPad 2 isn’t worth it. It’s more like a social status. If you got the iPad, then you’re cool. Am I right or wrong?
