Thank you Mr Hargreaves and all comments for confirming my decision to not renew my .mac account. I've been a faithful Apple/MAC devotee since inception...back when .mac was free, the iDisk actually worked, and it was easy to find Apple technical support contact information on the website and in manuals.

But this year, I refused to fork over $99 to renew a service that has not improved with the price tag. In agreement with others stated above: I can get free, bigger, better, and faster service elsewhere.

Some months ago, I added my "complaints" to a thread of similar issues about .MAC on the Apple support discussion board, (slow speed, downtime, spam, useless "free" software, cumbersome iDisk, etc.) The reply to my post (and others) was so condescending and unhelpful...basically I am a stupid user, I need to stop whinging and .MAC is the best email system.

Immediately, I put an auto responder on my .mac account to let everyone know that I was discontinuing my .mac account and to contact me on my gmail account. My .mac account expired three months later and I didn't renew. Most everyone got the message.

I am glad I found this blog page because I've been wondering why we are even paying for .mac mail anyway on a system provinding the service. There is Yahoo, Hotmail, Juno. People like that who provide free mail services. For a hundred bucks at that. That is ridiculous.

Thanks All. I wont be singing up for this.

I am a new convert to the MAC computer, and I am lovin it. I purchased the .MAC and set up an email address and that is about it. I dont even really use it due to all the issues of the service being down. I have not found any value add to continue to pay for the service. To me the backups are more secure when you purchase an external drive. That way you have your files with you. The only thing that I use on a regular basis is the encryption over iChat. I dont think that it is worth the price of admission. Just my 2 cents.

well are aren't we a bit off topic! But let me leave you with a Bob quote before i leave for a weekend of wine making:

"Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows"
