David,
I actually thought about that while working on the post (I guess I was too lazy to include it then). My response would be this: you don't use a web browser the same way you use a file browser. You don't move things back and forth between tabs in Safari the way you (theoretically) would do in the Finder.

Although I agree tabs would be useless in the Finder, I don't think your argument on tabs being a reference point and thus keeping a constant name stands a point here: in every web browser displaying tabs, the tab name changes whenever a new web page is loaded, the same way I would expect a finder tab to behave when changing directory :)

Leopard : lose the eye-candy, please get rid of all the Classic OS legacy stuff that now compromises UNIX security and give me a POSIX compliant, 21st century file system to guarantee OS X security for the future : ZFS ! A secure, rock-steady OS, the rest is not important.

Finder alternatives : PathFinder suffers from what Apple apps are generally speaking very careful to avoid : too many unnecessary options in one app. It's now bloatware.
Why use a Swiss Army knife when a simple single blade knife would suffice ?

My tip : Xfolders ! A brilliant filemanager that integrates well with the present Finder.
It's all you need, and whatever 'extras' PathFinder now forces upon users can much better be taken care of by a number of existing very slick 3rd party apps ...

Here it is ( freeware, 10.4 ) :
