Firstly, worms/trojans and virus can and do attack multiple platforms, however rare. You can get infected systems that spread across platforms, so make sure to lock down and protect your windows box. View it as a system that is on your LAN, it is a real software install running on a VM hardware which if configured properly won’t cause too many issues or get infected. Trevor, your statement is just flat out wrong for the most part.

If Windows can see, read and write files shared from Mac OS X, without special permissions, which is what sharing accomplishes, then any Virus written for Windows will be able to manipulate those files.

You will still need to secure the Windows installations, and that’s probably why VMware’s offering the McAfee deal.

However, any corruption in the Virtual Machine will not affect the Mac OS X.

Even if you are sharing files between Windows and Mac OS X, a virus written for Windows will not affect the Mac.

I’m interested in exploring the idea of running Windows on my MBP but I’m curious as to how vulnerable I’ll be to the usual problems and attacks associated with Windows — especially after seeing VMware’s offer of an 12-month subscription to McAfee’s Virus Scan Plus.

Any comments or suggestions to ease my concerns?
