Transfer Applications from iPhone to iTunes
I was having a lot of trouble getting my iPhone applications to sync with iTunes. I tried doing backups and full syncs to no avail. Finally, in a moment of desperation, I righted clicked on my iPhone and chose the option “Transfer Purchases” and to my suprise and glee I successfully moved my applications onto to my computer.
To transfer applictions to iTunes from your iPhone:
- Right click on your iPhone in the left hand explorer bar
- Select “Transfer Purchases”
- You should see a progress bar in iTunes and your phone should read “Sync in Progress”
- If everything went as planned, all of your applications that were purchased on your iPhone should now appear in iTunes

Marvellous !
I was getting a bit worried about why mine weren’t getting sync’d either.
Thanks for this tip !
N
This is sooooo simple, why wouldn’t it be in any tutorial or help menu? I agree Nick, this was a lifesaver!!
Thank you SO much for this tip! Apple’s site offered zero help; I really appreciate your assistance!
Ha, yeah I was about to cry. Thinking I would have to buy all my games again! TY so much for the info. Makes me happy =P
The only thing that you would ever have to repurchase from itunes is music. It conveniently remembers app purchases.. in case you delete one on accident.
I was having this problem… finally plucked up the courage to google about it, this was the first thing that came up! Genius!
Perfect!! Thank you!
Note: You must select “Authorise Computer” in the itunes menu first, then right click “transfer purchases”.
man, i love you so much, this is so must to authorise computer 1st. wow, i am a happy man now. eeehhhaaaa.
Thanks, the “authorizing computer” was the key. Thanks for letting us all know.
Thanks, it wasn’t working until I authorized the computer. Now it works perfect. Thanks!
oh my goodness thank you so much! i was at the end of my teather if it weren’t for you!
thanks for this wouldnt of got it:)
Thanks freeeedy
I hadnt authorized computer and always got problem, now its ok :)

Awesome tip! Thanks!
Thanks mate – definitely some of the most useful info I’ve found! Saves having to muck around with losing & re-syncing apps! LEGEND!
thanks brother!
I just wanted to give a big THANKS! Thanks for taking the time to post this. It has been over a year since this topic was first posted and it was the most helpful tip when I googled for help.
Oh you ROCK!!! thanks a million!! You have saved me a lot of trouble! I depend on my apps for nearly EVERYTHING!
man do I feel like a complete douche for not noticing this before……if i knew it were that easy……
total lifesaver!!!!
Thanks a lot – you saved me a lot of time!
thanks you very much, but i did this and i saw nothing on iTunes… i wonder does it transfer free apps too or only the ones bought?
Thanks! I guess not even Apple can think of everything in their tutorials and help manuals.
Thank you so much I now feel less stressed, I was really worried, what a life saver!
Thanks for this information!!! Just like everyone else so simple and yet saved about 3-4 hours of pure frustration.
life saver!
you rock!
Hi The only prob for me I cannot find an apps button in my i phone i tunes am I missing something?

You are a GENIOUS!!!!!!! Thank you so much for posting this. Wouldn’t this be a nice thing to have on the apple site!!!!!!! Happy new Year
lol – Thanks a lot m8 – still working!
NO this dosen’t work…and I have authorized my computor ~ a million times…please help!!!
Thank you SO SO MUCH!
Just before I did this, I had already sent a bitchy message to iTunes customer service.
It’s the second time all my apps disapear from my itunes library.
I’ll definitely know what to do next time!
This saved my life. Thank you for posting as it doesn’t seem to be addressed anywhere.
Thank you for this fix… I very much appreciate this being available! I had searched the Apple website and found nothing to help — glad you took the time to share your knowledge!
AWESOME post!!! Total lifesaver…..I was ready to throw myself off a tall building…..
This is great, I have tried for a long time to find a website, but nothing was working. What a simple tip!!!!!
your are a legend
THANK YOU – I was so frustrated. Thank you thank you thank you. I have searched and searched and tried download utilities, etc etc etc – thank you!!!!
Oh My god, Nick, thank you so much for puting this on here. I know this is from 2008, but still, nothing has changed! This was a lifesaver, i was fearing that i would lose my apps!
Free Air Show App Made it possible to put all of my pictures on the pc very easy.
Thanks for the tip. You’re a gem!
Great why does this not work for me….I keep authorising my computor…and transfering purchases…but no it still does not work!!
Please help…
This might help.. I realized that my iPod Touch was on a different account than my iTunes was.. Make sure that you are authorizing on the same account. This site tells you how to do this:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1389
a HUGE thank you.
I searched the web for this for a couple of hours and now finally I find your blog. This has helped me so much, thank you very much!!!!
Greetz
Roger
I did that, but, I recently lost my hard drive and I can’t get to transfer the apps that I have on my iPhone from before to my Mac with new Hard drive, any suggestions guys, thanks.
Leo
thanks for the tip but it did not work, somehow after reformatting my mac I cannot transfer my previous purchases from my iPhone, even though I have de-authorized and reauthorized. Not sure what to do now…. rats!!!
Thank you!! Worked great!
This is awesome…but I must say that Apple needs to make their software more intiutive. Thanks for posting this solution.
Hi, I agree with all the posite replies, have been messing around for 2 days and the solution was so simple.
THANKS!
THANKS A LOT YOUR A LIFE SAVER. I HAD OVER SEVEN PAGES AND I DID NOT WANT TO LOSE ANY OFF THEM. THANKS
I searched for ages before finding this answer. Its sooo simple in the end but took me forever to find. Many thanks
The only thing I’m worried about is when i click sync applications will it delete them??
Brilliant! This tip saved me literally hours having to individually re-download apps I had purchased but which had mysteriously disappeared from iTunes!
Dude, so simple, its brilliant! YOUR Brilliant! thank you sooo much.
WOW!! Thank you!! That’s awesome. Couldn’t find this info anywhere but here!! Brilliant! :)
Thanks a lot!!!
After changing my PC I was worried that have to bye applications once again in order to sync new with old ones.
WOW!!!!! Thank you soooo much. I was very worried cuz i bought a lot of apps and music to just let it go to waste.
I can’t believe how easy this is, and how difficult it is to find out how to do this. Thanks so much for this tip, it’s been a huge help.
What happens when the “Transfer Purchases” doesn’t work? (I recently had to have my hard disk replaced and now iTunes is telling me that I’m not authorized to use my apps on my computer. How do I fix that problem?)
Thanks.
thanx god.
Thanks so much! So simple but it was giving me fits. Sometimes, the most simple things are the hardest…
WOW & LOL, so glad I found this post! Just upgraded to 3gs from 3g and couldn’t figure out how to transfer my apps, thanks a lot for posting this.
I also found a way to run my business from my new iphone 3gs, if interested just visit my site. I’ll hook u back up and anyone else that is a fellow iphone owner. ;) Ciro
Fab. Can it believe it was so easy.
Weird, I was just encountering this problem and posting on the Apple discussion forums about it. Unfortunately, although others suggested this over there, it doesn’t work for me and others. Some (notably, more recent ones) applications on my iPhone just won’t transfer to iTunes. Also oddly, the “Applications” section in iTunes tells me I have one “1 update available” for my applications, but when I try to view it, it tells me no updates are available, but the “1″ refuses to go away.
I’d be tempted to try to restore my iPhone, but I’m not sure that I’ll be able to get back various apps I’ve paid for on my iPhone.
I was also having trouble getting my apps to transfer to iTunes. I did a bit more searching and found that you need to make sure that the computer you are working on is “authorized” first. I disconnected my iPhone, authorized the computer, attached the iPhone again, and then was able to right click on the iPhone and transfer my purchases.
I am using iTunes 8.2.1.6 and my iPhone is on 3.0. Hope this helps. I also have to agree with lin2log, this is hands down the best phone I have ever had. I usually get bored with new “toys” after about 3 months of use and this is almost a year old and I still feel like a little kid.
Whew, authorizing my computer worked. Man, they need to make this stuff more self-explanatory. Apple software sucks. I lost my apps twice before looking this up to figure it out.
we are on the same boat! and it appears that my iPhone cannot be synced. it says that an “unknown error occured (-53)”
if you’re worried about losing paid apps don’t stress because even though you have to download it again you don’t have to pay again. it’s still annoying but at least you dont have to pay twice!
Scarletmoon – I have gotten a similar error a couple of times. I got it corrected by unsyncing the music on my iphone then resyncing the music.
Wonderful! I was just trying to sync my apps last night to no avail.
Now if only I could stop my iPod Touch from crashing 5-6 times a day.
Life saver!!!!!
try uninstalling any podcasts you have downloaded and then try again
@ Sherkaner: Even if you do the restore you will be able to re-download all your apps for free…but that may be a pain if you have a lot like me.
How ? plz tell
Thanks for this! Very useful after my hard drive crashed on my MacBook (only a week after getting an iPhone) without unfortunately a Time Machine backup.
Found this when i googled “applications transfer iphone itunes”
Just wanted to say thanks!
Ah, ha. Excellent. Thanks!
thanks so much!
i was starting to get irritated myself.
I can only second what Sherkaner wrote TO THE T. iTunes merely goes thru the motions (at EVERY sync) but not ONE of the approx. 5 “on-the-phone-only” apps show up on my computer. I also have the “update-button-number” that won’t disappear every so often.
I’m glad (in a morbid way I guess) that I’m NOT ALONE!! Seems to me, that the whole ecosystem “iPhone” is still VERY MUCH in the making and is only very shaky at best!
But, nonetheless, my iPhone or rather THEE iPhone is the best damn phone I have ever had or seen, bar none!! I can live with few non-lethal quirks and this still very much fledgling stage. I’m not moronic enough to think things could or will ever be PERFECT. I trust, given maybe another 6 months and a few incremental update’s, Apple will progressively make this into an even more amazing product than it already is…
My problem was that the computer was not authorized. As a result of that (I assume), iTunes was removing the apps from my iPhone when I synced. It would warn me with a message about copying the apps from the iPhone to the computer, but I would check the Transfer option and it removed them anyway. Each time, I stopped the syncing, but would lose an app anyway. Since I have them on my home mac, I believe I’ll be able to regain them.
Once I tried to implement the tip, it gave the more valuable warning about the computer not being authorized. I authorized it, transferred the apps to the computer, and now all is well. Thank you very much.
By the way, Imram and I think alike. I found this when I googled “transfer iphone applications itunes”
THX for the advice on authorizing the computer first… I even removed iTunes and reinstalled it to no avail until I found this blog.
My problem is there is no Applications tab on my itunes :( I’m still using 1.1.4 version of iPhone…
Can someone help me plz…
Go to Edit > Preferences
Check the icon Application in General
Genius. Thx this really helped!
my problem is when i transfer purchases it says ur computer in not authorized…
how di i authorize it for free….
plzzz help i hav got like 30 games from my friends comp now i wanna add other apps from my laptop
So basically you’re asking us how you can best STEAL software that you haven’t paid for. That’s clever. Since if you HAD bought it, you would merely need to log into iTunes with your account and you could simply reload everything for free.
And it’s great to see that comment’s here are CENSORED without warning. Hooray… that really speaks highly of this blog.
NOT.
Just lame.
you can purchase thru the phone direct, so not all of it could be theft, (while possible)
but they said they paid for them, this doesnt automagically tell itunes to download them to itself.
that may work if u do a full backup using itunes, then that transfer purchases option, then after such you could restore after a try and not loose anything.
i did it on my 3g
What if i downloaded the apps straight from my iPhone. How would they end up in my iTunes library? Magic? Dumb ass.
@McWiggles SYNCHING, dumbass!
Actually I had an iPod touch and recently bought an iPhone. So I wanted to transfer apps I already paid for
Thanks so much…it worked after trying all night long!!!
I tried getting apps for my iphone. My comp said I had to download the new 7.7 itunes. I did. It still said I needed to download it. I downloaded it 4 times. Help! Is it me or my computer??
I have the same problem as others. I have two apps I purchased on iTunes and it won’t let me transfer them to my iTunes. I’m not sure what to do about it — if I should download them iTunes or if I should restore the phone and start over (which seems like a pain). I don’t want to pay for them again.
Worked for me. You’re that kind of fortunate geniuses.
Thank you for this. I wasn’t sure how to transfer management of my iPod Touch apps to iTunes on our new iMac. This thread came up first on Google. Problem solved.
Thank you so much! I just got a new iTouch and MacBook and I was getting so frustrated that I had to keep syncing the iTouch to my husband’s PC. Thank you Thank you Thank you!
Omg, thank you very much. I would be so pissed if my ipod was to crash or reboot without my bought apps. Thank you thank you.
When I downloaded the iPhone 2.1 software to my iPhone (and synced for the 1st time), the applications on my phone don’t work. I’m guessing because the applications didn’t transfer/sync to my computer. Now it says “your computer is not authorized to play these applications”.
How do I authorize my computer?
WOW, so simple, thanks
store>authorize computer
I have been looking for this for 2 hours. Where is the “authorize computer” link in the store? My problem is I have 2 itunes accounts. I have used both, but now I want to consolidate to ONE account on my new MAC I just got. I want to sync my phone and all of its apps to my new computer, but many of the apps were purchased under the other itunes account. Anyone have advice? will authorizing my computer do this and how do you get to it?
hi,
im having problems syncing my applications that ive downloaded from itunes on my pc onto itouch. The problem is that there is no “Application tab” for me to click on to transfer purchases from itouch when its synced to the computer….(theres summary, music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, photos and info.. no Videos and Applications)
i need help! any would be nice! thanks.
this is the same problem i’m having. there’s no application tab in the device section.
help?
Try going to the app store in iTunes and downloading a free app. Maybe that will cause the tab to appear.
i’ve tried “transfer purchases to itunes,” i’m authorized. this is so frustrating. i’ve finally emailed apple about it, but there’s no telling if i’ll hear back.
anyone know any other tips that haven’t been mentioned here?
i just got an ipod touch 8G i have downloaded apps from the store but have no idea on how to load them on to my ipod. i have tried tons of things like transferring purchases but nothing seems to work! i would really appreciate the help!
Finally…
After unchecking and checking the sync applications in the applications tab of the iphone and right clicking on the iphone to select the transfer purchases with no luck. I finally double clicked one of the application icons in the applications folder of my library which allowed me to authorize my account. I was then able to check the sync all application and transfer purchases without any problems.
Hope it helps the others that are still having problems and thanks to those who previously posted.
THANKYOU SO MUCH! I had NO idea where to find that, and now you’ve solved my problem! Very very happy! :)
Every now & again you get a clear and precise answer to a question googled. This was exactly one of those of-so-few occasions.
Many thanks!
Had to go into iTunes -> Store tab -> Authorize computer, takes 30sec – 1 min to authorize and will confirm with ex.” 2/5 computers were authorized” …then re-synched phone they are now on there. Success.
is it possible to have more than 5 authorized computers?
Thank you so much, I have been trying to do this all night since my hard drive failed last night. I almost thought I was going to have to buy them all again. Thank you!
Thanks for the tip, but I returned my new #G model because it was blanking the screen while I was talking to anyone and then I could not turn it off or on until the other person hung up. Anyway the three apps that I bought originally on the edge Iphone showed up with the little circled 3 next to the app store icon on the new flawed 3G, but when they transferred over the phone to the new one I no longer have the icon with the circled three so I do not know how I can get what I paid for back. Any tips on this one.
Thanks
So I have a question about one detail.
Lets say my hard drive had errors. I reformat. I select to “Transfer Purchases” from my iPhone. The application I downloaded to my iPhone are now there. The only thing that scares me is this: When i go to sync my apps, it warns me that all applications and data they contain will be deleted and replaced with what is in iTunes. Does that mean that preferences, notes, voice recordings, etc that are in my apps will be gone? Or is that data imbedded in the apps that are in my iTunes?
I thought that maybe if I deleted all the apps from iTunes and tried to sync…maybe it would automatically transfer the apps to iTunes along with the data they contain, but iTunes warns me that if I wipe out the apps in iTunes then sync…it will wipe out my apps on the iPhone.
If someone had similar experience, let me know how it worked out. I basically want to know what happens when you transfer apps from the phone to iTunes, then sync. Does the data get erased? Do you have to re-arrange the apps on the iPhone back to the way they were? THANKS!
I just did this and all my prefs and data were retained (whew!). I got a new Mac and wanted to setup my I phone on it. I did the Transfer Purchases thing and then in the Apps tab, I clicked the sync applications checkbox. It gave me the warning that it would overwrite all my apps. After checking the box all my apps were arranged in a different order. So before I hit the apply button, I arranged the apps in iTunes the way I had them on my iphone. Then (throwing caution into the wind ;)) I hit apply. It synced fine. I have now gone though all the apps on my iphone and they all still have their prefs and data. Sweet! I’m a happy camper.
that last comment is what just happened to me, my computer crashed, and I had to reinstall Itunes, and now tells me the same thing, the apps will be deleted since the apps on my iphone were from another itune library……what can I do ?
I have same problem like other did. I can sync address, calendar & music but not application. I even delete itunes application and re-install again but still now working. What can I do?
ok not sure what happened, I rebooted my computer and some how, my application appeared in my itunes, so cannot explain how, but now syncing my apps, I had to add the new one that i added not long ago, I lost a few, but was easy to put them back, I click on sync app then i saw the app from app store and then added the one I got somwhere else, i got tired ot trying so I took the chance, and it works fine, but of course, make sure you make a list of the apps first, and you can always download diskaid to copy the apps from your iphone to your computer and back to your phone after you synced….good luck to you all..
Thanks a lot for that great tip!
I spent the whole morning trying to figure this out and getting stressed about buying applications all over again.
This has saved me a lot of worry and time, thanks once again:)
@Derek
Thanks for your finding, it shure did help me.
They say something about Apple quality software and stuf…. This is a very lame error from Apple programers part, aldo iTunes is so slow….
Heya guys…i found this site via google but it appears i have a slightly different problem…my apps appear on the apps tab but there is no way i can check the little sinc box cuz itunes don’t allow it (the lill box is grey and uncheckable)….any help is soooo very welcome…
thx…:-D
Wow, it worked so thanks. I am helping someone out on the IPhone – so much thanks to your post.
Otherwise my G1 kills the IPhone on usability. Of course it is a lot less dummy proof. There was no dialog to denote file location. So my back up is some where on the PC.
Ouch. Hopefully the restore knows where Itunes put this stuff (I tell ya, it ain’t in the folder with the apps we just backed up). I only found the apps stuff because I was smart enough to watch the file names and search.
Again OUCH.
Viva la open source.
thanks for the tip
i was worried there for a second becuase i tunes wouldnt sync my apps
thanks a bunch!
Thanks so much for that, my wife and i just got iPhones and we use 2 computers. It’s good to know little things like this =D
I have downloaded my apps directly to my phone, but they won’t go onto my computer… even when I click transfer purchases. Any recommendations? I want them on my computer in case I lost my phone or something happened to it – thanks
Thank you, thank you, thank you. May your days be full of sunshine for you being the first search hit on this…I almost went crazy. THANK YOU.
I had the same problem with authorizing a new macbook with my existing iPhone so I could transfer all my apps from the iPhone to the new macbooks iTunes. You have to authorize your computer by going to the “Store -> Authorize Computer” menu item.
Apple seems to let you authorize up to 5 computers with iTunes – no idea on why the limit. But all that said and done once you have the computer authorized you can go to the “File -> Transfer Purchases from …” menu item to transfer your iPhone to your iTunes.
Hey Andy, thanks a lot man…this was really helpful. without authorizing the computer, u cannot transfer the apps…I was trying all the sites to get an answer to transfer the apps from iphone to itunes…this is the perfect answer…Greate
Hi,
I’ve installed a free applications from iTunes store in my Office computer. and i copied applications to my home computer’s iTunes Library which there’s no internet connection to authorise..
So is there any trick to sync application without authorization (No internet connection).?
Is there any solution where i can bring from the Office iTunes Library to Home library..?
Cheers,
I have done both suggestions numerous times and I still can’t get all my apps to transfer to the iTunes library, it is bewildering at this point. As for the iphone “applications window” in itunes it only shows 1 application and that is the one I re-downloaded this morning directly from the itunes app store. I figured i’ll just re-download all my apps that way but when I got to a “purchased” app it wanted me to pay for it again even though its in my purchase history and i downloaded and paid for it through my iphone. Not sure which direction to go from here, I wish you could mount the phone as a disk and just drag and drop the apps that way, but I guess were not supposed to do to much physical labor, ie, all the automation itunes supposedly has… reminds me of brazil and some vaccum tubes, ha ha.
thanks for this. i just got a new comp and didn’t know how to transfer my apps to it.
There is clearly a bug with the apps not showing up in itunes. My girlfriends works fina and I can’t get one of mine to show up even after following all directions I can find on the internet. FYI, I have the latest version of itunes.
Hi all, hoping someone can help? I synced my iphone 3g apps with my macbook, didnt seem to be a problem, except it removed them from my iphone! i have tried to sync again to get them back onto the phone but it doesnt work. i have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the phone to try and select the apps individually within itunes to sync but again doesnt work. its only the apps i want back on the iphone – any ideas anyone??
This problem has been driving me mad for ages…thanks so much for the hint!
This is annoying. My computer IS authorized. I have never purchased any songs from iTunes. I’ve only purchased Apps. I deauthorized my computer and authorized it again. I still encounter that same “Some of the purchased items on the iphone could not be transferred to your itunes library because you are not authorized to play them on this computer” error… Any help? People keep saying play one of the songs purchased from iTunes, but I’ve never purchased a song from iTunes, just applications… Now what?
This has just happend to me too .
did you ever find out what to do ?
thanks .
Thanks! Now transferring all of my apps to my new PC is waaaaaaay easier
You the Man!!
iTunes fraking SUCK!!! Suck, suck, SUCK, SUUUUUUCK :O !!!!! Arghhh, it makes me so mad that I constantly have problems with it, one way or another! It’s a piece of crap software, period. I just wonder when Apple’s gonna wake up and completely rewrite it and redo its stupid policies that go with it, ha?! Syncing is stupid, I think. It’s only needed in certain cases, not as the main pillar of the iTunes crapware. I love the iPhone but maa-an, iTunes really piss me off. It’s slow and craps out so often and so UNRELIABLE it hurts!!! If there would be one thing preventing me buying iPhone – it DEFINITELY would be the crappy iTunes!!! (2nd being tied up to the AT&T, the cohort of shady government in spying and abuse of rights besides being the monopolistic abuser in general).
Just got this working. I just got a new mac and my applications weren’t showing up. I tried what was suggested here with no luck. I was authorized and all.
So I decided to see if the applications were anywhere on my computer… and they were! They were all in my iTunes folder under the folder Mobile Applications. There were multiple copies of each application, presumably each update for the app. So I just imported that folder into iTunes, it began to ask me if I’d like to replace my current version of with the older copy. I clicked yes for some, no for others… it didn’t really matter.
What this did was brought back the Application tab. If any files were replaced with the old, I just clicked Check for Updates to make sure I got the most recent.
Basically it seems like the apps are already on your computer, so when you tell iTunes to transfer the purchases it says “ok, well i’ve got them already, no need to do that” But for some reason the tab is gone.
Hopefully this will help some
So… Once you sync your phone with iTunes you then need to go to the Applications panel. Double click an app and re-enter your password. Then it is “authorized”. That is so frickin RETARDED! Apple is retarded. You know who the biggest retard is? Me. I keep buying their crap.
Thanks so much!! This was exactly what i needed.
Youhou !!! thank you so much for the trick. I was desperate to get my applications back on my computer.
Hey aplH8r….Thanks for the input…that is exactly what I needed. I too was having difficulties syncing apps. Wish I would of read your post before I restored. Thanks!!
thanks for this
Thank You!!! So simple, but I would have never thought to right-click the device LMAO
I suspect this is INCREDIBLY obvious — but how do I do this in reverse? I accidentally deleted something off my iPhone (3G) but can’t figure out how to get it BACK on from the “applications” section on my itunes (where it IS showing up.)
HELP! (And thanks!)
(ignore my previous question… I really am a moron and just figured it out on my own… Sorry…)
I found a lot of the information on this forum helpful, however I’m trying to download an app that I bought thru iTunes onto my iPhone. When i tried to download thru my iphone, it said that it was too large, so i opted to do it via my computer. Now it will not let me transfer to my iphone. Am I stupid, or just confused. Thanks!!
what if when i sync my itouch but there is no application tab on the syncing devise thing?
Post # 30 cured my problem. Thanks to Jessie and all those who have contributed.
thankyou very much for this tip. My itunes lost all apps during my nightmare virus situation. THANKS!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have no idea how much joy you just brought me.
Thank you! Every time I purchase a new computer I always have a problem getting all of my iTunes content transfered properly. I finally got all of my music transfered after having to battle with 5 out of 5 computers authorized and then my applications wouldn’t merge. This solved it, thank you!
Thanks, That was a lifesaver. I knew that option was there but feared it would erase everything on my Touch since it was authorized on a different computer and none of the apps were on the new computer. Syncd right up just fine.
Somehow this is not working for me. If I buy an app on the iPhone and then sync with my iMac, the status bar *says* it’s downloading apps from my iPhone, but they never appear in iTunes. I have got around this by redownloading the apps through iTunes (luckily, unlike music, you can do this multiple times with no additional charge) but it seems like a bug. I have made sure to reset my warnings on the phone, and have made sure my iMac is authorized, but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?
OMG OMG OMG!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I had an iPod that was stolen out of my car (yes, they broke the window and everything!) and just recently purchased an iPhone. My computer was down for almost a month with my iTunes library and I wasn’t going to wait to play with my iPhone. In order to purchase some of the apps, I synched it with my work laptop as a temporary fix.
Now that I spent time and money on the applications and loading all kinds of information into these neat apps only to find I couldn’t transfer them to my desktop! Needless to say, I was pretty upset!
Thank you for posting this and making my life easier!!!
Warmest regards,
Arial Burnz
I didn’t read all of the posts but regarding not being able to transfer and sync apps with the iphone. You need to authorize your phone with that computer. Do this by clicking “store” on the menu at the top and click authorize computer. Follow the instructions from there and finally, click transfer apps from the right-click menu of your iphone icon.
Thank you! Finally someone able to to helpfully explain how to transfer my iphone apps.
if you can’t get your apps to sync from iTunes to your iTouch, check to see if the “applications” tab shows up on the iTouch window in iTunes. If not, then you need to purchase the updated software for your iTouch. It’s about $9.95.
Once you’ve downloaded the newer version of the software (free if your iTouch is already running 2.2 or something like that), then the download for the apps will sync right up.
good luck!
THANK YOU!!
Does anyone know how to do the same things with songs? I’ve just added iTunes to my work laptop and HAVE been able to get my apps to sync… but now if I try to transfer any of the music from my laptop it warns me about deleting all of my existing music! I know you all have a clever solution!!
Thanks in advance!
***Tip to anyone whos stuck*** If this method does not work go to the top menu and find authorize computer and then try it again. it took me about a hour to work it out…
thank you so much i don’t know why i didn’t think to check that.
hi..got problem with my formatted PC. it shows would you like to transfer APP to PC?so it shows transfering figure. But once I check on my iphone, there are no longer APPs available? Is that means I’ve removed it from my Iphone or there are still in my PC? How can I get back all those Purchased items? Pls someone help me…
Thanks very much!! Just updated my iphone and had to restore the damn thing and lost all my apps!!!! No i can sync the apps to save me going through hell to download them all!!!!
AWESOME Thanks
Works great for me, but SUPER slow on the 1st gen iPod touch.
This is regarding #59 Lisa: who says;
” . . . So I decided to see if the applications were anywhere on my computer… and they were! They were all in my iTunes folder under the folder Mobile Applications . . .”
I have this exact problem, however when I go in to my iTunes Folder on my computer there is no such folder as “Mobile Applications” Please can anyone help me this is very frustrating as I have purchased 3 applications on my iPhone which were all working perfectly fine until my iPhone crashed and I had to backup and then restore it but then when I went into my phone after rebooting it, only 1 of my applications was showing, and the other 2 are nowhere to be found (not even on my iTunes anywhere. The only record I have that I have ever purchased these apps is on my iTunes Shop account under Purchase History. Please help if anyone knows how I can get my purchased apps back on my phone/iTunes/both!!

Thanks for the help!
For those using iTunes on Mac, with no right click capability, place cursor on the iPhone icon on itunes, hold the ctrl (control) key, and click. That will open the same menu described here.
Thank you so much, you are a lifesaver! I don’t see why there isn’t a checkbox for this procedure where the Applications tab is…
Thanks again!
Thank you! You solved alot of frustration =)
Thanks for the tip.. but this still doesnt work. Been trying to fix for months.
Thank you very much!
OmG! LIFE SAVER!
oh GOD! in fact i am not getting a application button in my itunes…
Thanks, that work great!
Brilliant! Thanks so much. I’ve now got all my apps back in iTunes after having to reinstall.
Thanx heaps for this…. so simple
AWESOME!!!! Thank you so much…i just got a new mac and started to worry that I would not be able to get my gazillion apps on there. This worked perfect. THANK YOU!!!!!
Brilliant tip! that problem really annoying!
How do you get more authorized computers after you exceed the 5 allowed with the iphone?
BINGO!!!. TKS MAN. SIMPLE, EASY, AS IT SHOULD BE.
THnkz bro it workd
I have this same problem but with an ipod touch.
i just bought a laptop but my apps dont want to get tansfer :( :( :(
I knew there had to be an easier way. Thanks for saving me a few hours :)
Ok as some have mentioned, I have authorized my computer but still when I try to transfer the things I bought it tells me my computer is not authorized. I have tried deauthorizing it and authorizing it afterward but it still doesn’t work. PLEASE HELP!!!!
i have this problem . did you find a way to do it ? thanks
Thank you so much to #28. I tried all of the things listed in the little FAQ up top but your suggestion is what ended up working.
do you know why i havent an ‘applications’ tab on my iphone device page?
just trying to sync over some applications and games but finding it a mystery
Thanks for the answer
“I have downloaded my apps directly to my phone, but they won’t go onto my computer… even when I click transfer purchases. Any recommendations? I want them on my computer in case I lost my phone or something happened to it – thanks.”
I had the same problem, very frustrating! When you do a sync/backup, it should simply include your apps as well, you shouldn’t have to also transfer purchases. Regardless, I right-clicked the iphone on itunes to transfer purchases, and that didn’t work. But I selected “File” and then “Transfer Purchases”, that worked?! Apple really needs to fix this.
Thanks for the great tip.
BUT – I would appreciate a whole bunch if someone could point me in a direction of how to transfer my applications that I downloaded onto my iTunes to my iPhone 3G.
When I click the Applications tab, it says “Sync applications” and gives me a list of my downloaded apps but I can’t highlight it!
Any help would be great. Thanks!!
thank you so much i was about to go crazy
Hello,
I just downloaded Ituned8 and synced my ipod touch with it, First of all I lost all my purchased songs and then I lost all my purchased application.
I looked all over my computer to maybe find them restored somewhere but I couldnt find them.
I did click on transfer all purchased but it didnt work. :( does this mean that I should purchase them all over again?
Is there anyway that I get my purchases back?
Please help.

Another question, I cant sync my photos, I have done it before with Windows vista but when I changed my windows to XP, it seems impossible. I can select the folders and everything, it just doesnt sync
hey,is there any way i can transfer my applications (which were installed on my friend`s computer by his account) to my itunes of my computer.
ive tried using “tranfer purchases”option but it dosent actually allow me to transfer them because it says my computer is not authorized for it.
I know that because im not the one who purchased them lol but am still trying to find a solution for this.
do reply.
thans a lot.
Hey, did u ever get a soln 2 this ?? I am in just the same boat
it helps me alot to solve my problem…thanks alot…
Think it’s bad now?
I have 100+ apps on my iPhone and when I right-click and Transfer Purchases, it goes through the list of them but doesn’t actually transfer them.
Can’t wait to hear what Apple has to say about this one.
I have more than 100 apps too and mine does the same thing….
Thank you for this post. I was searching google and this works perfectly. My computer is authorized with my apple account (for anyone having trouble do this first) and then transfer your apps.
Thank you so much for this awesome tip! I was seconds away from throwing my laptop and iphone out the window from frustration when I stumbled across this page.
And thanks also to Dorian for the C:UsersYOURACCOUNTNAMEMusiciTunesMobile Applications path.
Ah, I love the internet. :)
i love you man.
u da best
extremely useful! except if I knew this before, It would have been alot less annoying ;)
After 20 minutes of googling this exact problem… I am now sitting here thinking… its so obvious!
Apple the company that doesnt believe in a “right click” would hide something this important in that menu….
THANKS FOR THE TIP….!!!!
Doesn’t work for my JB’d iPhone. Get the following message for free apps:
For ones in iTunes
“” was not installed on the iPhone because you are not authorised for it on this computer.
- where ” are the various apps I have.
For ones on iPhone
“” could not be transferred from the iPhone “iPhone” because you are not authorised to play it on this computer.
Possibly because it’s jailbroken?
Writing this I found this solution –> You need to authorise your computer via iTunes Store > Authorise Computer … Works for iPhone to iTunes but can’t see the apps I had first in iTunes on my iPhone.
I just upgraded from a 8gb iPod touch to a 16gb iPod touch and was worried I couldn’t transfer my apps (I paid $6-10 for some of them). Thanks for helping me.
Thank you… this helped so so much!!!
U THE MAN!!!!
I’ve been trying for 5 hours and it turns out u only had to click one button XD
I just got my iPhone 3GS today and have tried for several hours to get my old phone apps transferred to it. Your information was a great help! Thanks
Thank you so much!!!!
Guys, I have been looking around for a few days when I have time to search this out on the web and you had the answer! I was downloading software and trying to find an application that could just copy my apps off the iphone and back to my machine. The function was there in itunes, I just didn’t realize it could be that simple. Thanks Again!! :-)
Wow! this is a bit complicated and time-wasting for something that is meant to be as simple as using iTunes to manage your iPhone! Thanks for the tip re iPhone – iTunes direction (i.e. right-click on iPhone in iTunes and choose Transfer purchases). But the problem I was having was in the other direction, where I purchased (my first paid app) on iTunes assuming it would be a simple or automatic matter to sync it with my iPhone. The Apple advice is to do this by syncing the applications (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1977) – but this didn’t work for me, the one stubborn app I was trying to sync was still in iTunes but not transferring across to iPhone. But here’s the trick, from Apple themselves: you can re-download purchased apps for free if you are logged into the same iTunes account! It is counter-intuitive because you have to purchase the app again but then it realised that you purchased it already and simply downloads it. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519. Well, I learnt something and am now synced and ready to use my new app. @Frustrated
: if you’re still searching for a solution, hope this helps!
This is THE help I was looking for, after authorizing and all…
TKS!
when i click “transfer purchases” it says copying then it does NOTHING! help i just got a new computer and cant sync it till i transfer my apps… which i have like more than 120. or so.
I did a bit more searching and found that you need to make sure that the computer you are working on is “authorized” first. I disconnected my iPhone, authorized the computer, attached the iPhone again, and then was able to right click on the iPhone and transfer my purchases.
Excellent, thanks
This is terrific and a big help!
Thanks!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I just updated my ipod touch to the 3.O update and got a bunch of apps. But know I cant transfer them to another computer and I could before the 3.0 update is this becuase the 3.0 update still has some bugs? PLZ help
Thank You so much it was just that simple and i just did not know it was there . Racking my brain thanx alot good tip
Thanks so much for explaining how to transfer the applications for my iPhone from one computer to another. I just bought a new computer and am going to sell the old one and this tip was great! Thanks!
i’ve been trying to figure this out all day.
i wish there was a way to do this with playlists too. but i spent the afternoon redo-ing playlists and then syncing.
thanks for this though. i thought i was gonna have to rebuy all those apps. and i would not have been a happy camper.
This tip sure came in handy!! Thanks a lot!
Hi, I have a question about an imovie I purchased and downloaded. It shows up in my movies in my library, but I cannot transfer it to my iphone (the intent of purchase for my daughter). There is no movie tab to sync in itunes (only podcast, video, photos etc.)
Anyone got any ideas?
THANKS
sorry – ignore my question. I did not scroll down far enough in videos to see the movies section……
THANKS
Such a simple solution to a major nightmare. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You rock.
my still will not sync. I have uninstalled/reinstalled itunes and all associated software. i have unauthorized and reauthorized my computer. i have re-downloaded every app. nothing works. any help??
i have tried the transfer option as well…..
i tried this, and it took a minute or so to sync, but i still don’t have apps in the phone. it gets new songs, but no apps…?
mate you are a legend thanks for the help .. i bought this new mac book pro and only thing i have to do was authorize computer and then transfer purchases … cheers
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You
This solved a lot of problems that iPhone support and genius bar couldn’t help me with. My iphone applications didn’t launch correctly after I installed 3.0.1. The opened for a second and closed right away. So I downloaded an app, and everything worked. Then iTunes stopped syncing with my iPhone. For some reason, it synced again, but my all my downloaded apps died again. Finally I did what you suggested (iTunes/Store menu/Authorize computer) and it synced the apps for the first time and the apps are working again.
Awesome.
Thank you, this has really helped me!
thanx soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much it did it and i am so happy i love you
THANKS SO MUCH!!!! I LOVE YOU!!
can someone help me? i cant tranfer my apps from iphonr to itunes. i didnt buy it from itunes i downloaded them from my friends computer. any ideas how to transfer them into itunes
can someone please help me my iPhone is connected to my computer in iTunes it recongnises my iPhone i cant get any apps from iTunes onto my iPhone. i click my phone then i click applications and the text is grey and the box [ ] sync applications is grey and almost if it were locked you cant click it or anything. I’ve tryed reinstalling but just does the same thing. . . can someone please help me with this problem much appreciated. . .
NVM I FIXED IT :D IT WAS SOME CRASHES IN THE APP FOLDER I DELETED THE AND NOW IT WORKS :DDDDDD
HELP ME PLEASE!!!!! In itunes when I’m going to applications panel of iphone 3g, I can’t check “Sync Applications”, beacause that is inactive. I have autorize my computer, transfer applications, but I still can’t sync applications, please help me! Thanks! I
Beautiful! Thank you so much!!!!
great fix! thanks for sharing.
I would also like to thank you for posting this, was getting VERY annoyed with my iphone ruining another sunday having to tinker around with it.
If only I could get it to recognise my service provider I could get on with cutting the grass……
Hey, thanks. What I couldn’t figure out was why mine would only say sync for like 3 seconds and then stop. But when I had my mom remove the installing apps restriction, it worked great. So for all those kids out there that there parents put blocks on there iPhones and only let you download apps with them seeing what you’re doing, try that to get your apps on your computer.
Ok, so for those of you who just reformatted or got a a new computer or whatever and the applications is not in your itunes sidebar. Just go into ~/music/itunes/mobile applications/
and just double click one of your .ipa apps, and it will re-create the tab for you!
Cheers!
really helped me a lot. last time i had lost my all the app which i was having on my iphone. but this time, i’m really happy to know that i can tranfer all my app to itunes. thanks
Exactly what I was looking for. I have a laptop and a desktop PC. I purchased a few apps on my laptops iTunes. then when I tried synchronizing the apps on my PC, those apps were getting removing from iPhone. I followed your steps and I am happy now :).
Thanks for the help.
Thank you so much for this. Thank you!
Thanks! I was trying to figure out how to do this in anticipation of the new touch!
i followed the steps but there was no application tab that appeared…i need help here! tnx… =)
you need to enable the “applications” check box in the itunes preferences.
just adding another thankyou to the list! what an absurdly simple answer to such an annoying problem, i can’t believe they didn’t make it more obvious.
how silly of me to assume i’d know what to do right away when transferring my iphone to my new computer! that would be too much to ask for!
THANKS A TON!
omg thank you so much for this. its ridiculous how this isnt made more obvious or how it doesnt give you a prompt to do this when you sync with a new computer.
So glad I found this tip!
Thank you so much! iTunes gave me complicated instructions…. well not very complicated, simply uninformative. They told me to find itunes store and authorize downloads. I was so upset since it didnt explain anything, but was I amazed when it was actually very simple, :D thank youuuuu!
My purchases transfer every time I sync – but they don’t ever show up in iTunes. The transfer process names every one, but none ever show up in the Applications folder in iTunes.
Just verified that my iTunes is authorized.
It’s been doing this for months and I’ve yet to find a solution.
I have the same problem, Glenn. I have transferred the purchases over and over and even though it goes through the process and says they’ve been transferred, those apps don’t show up on the list. The icons, however, are visible on the right side and I can rearrange them. The computer’s authorized. Anyone figure out a way around this or is this just a fluke?
The only way I can think of getting around this is “buying” the app again in iTunes.
For example, I bought iFitness on my phone ($1.99) and it doesn’t show up in iTunes. So, I went to the store on my computer, searched for iFitness, and then clicked on the “$1.99 Buy App” link. A window then popped up and informed me “You have already purchased this item. To download it again for free, select OK.” If you select okay, it’ll download it via iTunes and on your next sync it’ll now be there.
Tedious, I know, but that’s the only way I can get them to show up in iTunes.
Ever find a solution to this? I’m having the exact same problem, and just can’t seem to find a way to fix it. iPod Touch 2G, running 3.1.2, iTunes 9.0.2
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Worked wonderfully!
This was very helpful. I spent the entire nite and half the morning trying to figure this out. Called Apple to be told they could only help me for $60.00 bucks unless I went to an Apple Store. Called the Apple Store and they can’t see me until Saturday.
I feel much better now.
Thanks.
thanks~ =D
Thank you so much. I had the same problem. Resolved in a tick. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers.
it is helpful tip but when i try to transfer the apps it brings a dialog box with this message “some of the purchased items on the iphone coukd not be transferd to your itune library because you are not authorized to play them on this compuer”. so, how can i authorize?
thanks
If you go to the top tools, click store, then go down to authorize computer ect.
Yay! Thanks so much for the information – Very clear, concise and quick & easy to fix.
Thank you sooooo much!!! I never thought of right-clicking on the iPhone. I knew there was a way to keep your purchases. Why they don’t include a message in the sync options is beyond me. Thanks for your help!!!
Thanks man I completely restored my computer but forgot to backup itunes. I almost lost all my paid apps ($80 worth!) but thanks to this guide I was able to keep all my apps.
its very simple…..first “authorize computer” and then transfer purchases from iphone…..this worked for me….
They really need to make this more conspicuous.
Jenny for president
Wow! This is exactly what I needed! Thanks!
Hi. I hope someone can help. I have an iPod Touch and my boyfriend purchased some apps from his PC and his iTune account and put it on my iPod. I’ve since then learned how to download apps straight from my iPod Touch. But today, I connected the iPod to my Macbook and it was syncing in iTune when i saw it says ‘Remove peggle, Remove…..remove…’ it was removing all the apps my bf got for me! So i pulled the plug out and totally freaked out. The apps have definitely disappeared from my iPod itself, only the apps I purchased from my iTune account remained. I reconnected iPod to my Mac and sync again and I can see my remaining apps in my iTune but still cannot find the old ones my bf purchased. I’ve authorized the computer, I logged into my bf’s iTune account and whilst I can see his past purchase of my apps, I can’t find a place to ‘redownload’ so to speak. I don’t want to have to purchase it again cuz it seems silly I’d have to keep paying for apps if it was bought from one account to another. Can someone please help me?? Thank you!
omg thank you SO much
Saved my “life”! Too hard for Apple to just write a dialog box in sync that asks “would you like to copy applications in this phone to iTunes?”… I lost all my apps in the phone but thanks to this and the old hard drive I was swapping out I got everything restored and now working in the new Windows install! Thanks!
wow i was gettin pissed thanks got it now
I transferred by music purchases to my itunes on my work computer which is authorized, but it wouldn’t transfer my applications because it says this computer is not authorized. When I go to authorize the computer it says it IS authorized. I have no idea what to do…itunes says it isn’t authorized, but my computer says it is. The other thing I can’t figure out is why under “devices” in itunes my iphone applications won’t show up in the list when everything else does.
i am having the same prob that katie is havin i bought a iphone 3g off my friend that already had apps on it so i got a itunes account and tried to transfer my purchases to my itunes but it says that my computer is not authoeized so i go and authorize my computer and it says that it is authorized but when i go to do it again it keeps sayin that my computer is NOT authorized and i dont have my applications under my device ethier. WHAT DO I DO???
Both of you: you are trying to sync applications bought with another account. Your iTunes is not authorized with that account but with your own account. As far as I know, you cannot use applications bought from two different accounts on one device. You will either have to buy them on your own account or move your device over to your boyfriend’s account..
Thanks, thanks, thanks.
:)
Thank you!!! I was about to start deleting apps from my iphone because itunes was not reading my purchased apps from my iphone. Thanks Alot!! really helped.
so will it not go on my computer b/c its a free app?!?!
b/c i really hav to get my lectures on computer but i hav it on quickvoice and i did what it said….but it wont appear on itunes like it posed to! :(

I accidentally removed all the apps in my itouch when i was syncing it with the itunes on my laptop. I checked the mobile applications folder on my laptop where i’m supposed to find them but its not there anymore. So i just downloaded my favorite apps again through itunes. When i tried transferring them to my itouch, it says that the items could not be transferred as i am “not authorized for them on this computer” whatever that means. FYI, my laptop is authorized already so it must be something else. If it helps, i downloaded my previous apps using another computer. Now im stump and i dont know what else to do. Please help! Thanks! I would also appreciate it if you could also help me find the other apps i’ve lost without downloading them again.
I struggled with the same issues when I upgraded to Win 7. I finally looked on my iPhone and determined which iTunes account I had authorized and then went to iTunes on my computer and authorized the same account. then everything seemed to work and I was able to right click on my iPhone in iTunes and transfer my apps. I never realized I had so many accounts authorized in iTunes and wish that I could delete a couple of them
You are a GOD!
I love you
I m having the same problem with #Celeste
It keeps saying that my com is not authorized although i’d authorized it. Now im stuck here. pls Help?
Oh my gosh thank you so much. I was about to throw my itunes across the room then assault it with a tennis racket. Now i’m embracing my monitor with loving arms.
Thanks, you made my day! I actually used this one before but had forgotten about it!
Thanks!!! I can’t believe it was so simple. Apple really should have placed that in the applications tab.
Thanks so much.
Thanks, this is great info!
Wish I had known this before I synced with iTunes 9. Thankfully the apps I lost were all free but I had to download about 30 of them again. The iTunes receipts were huge time savers.
Thanks, I was looking everywhere for this.
I agree, life saver :)
Thanks for the Tips…for this I was looking for quite long
Thanks for the tip
I can’t believe how long I had to troll through Google sites until I found your very simple answer. Thank you.
Hahaha brilliant!! Why didn’t iTunes do this automatically instead of telling me it has to remove all my applications when I check “Sync Applications”? Hahaha…
O! M! G!!! THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN’ ABOUT!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I AM STILL A NEW BOOTY TO THE IPHONE/ITUNES WORLD AND DEPEND MUCH ON MY FRIENDS FROM WORK TO HELP ME WHEN I GET IN TROUBLE. i TOO GOOGLED THIS AND YOU WERE THE FIRST THING THAT POPPED UP!! **bowing down!*
Excellent tip! I was having trouble syncing apps on my iPod Touch 32GB back to iTunes on my iMac.
thanx for the help! it so usefull but i have another problem! how can i change the account that i registered my itouch on the day that i bought it and still keep all the apps and songs that i bought?? if you know plz reply i need to know fast.
thanks a lot!!
right click iPhone- nothing happens
Went to iTunes: Store: Authorized – done
Still it will not sync
Any help?
did you ever figure out how to transfer from iphone to itunes??
thank you!!! lifesaver!!
Thank You! Apple of all companies should have this covered in their FAQs.
THANK YOU for your insight! Saved me a lot of grief :) Made my day!
I love you!
Best tip ever. I was going crazy not able to move my apps from iphone to the new macbook pro. Mac complained since I synced with PC before I cannot sync anymore.
Great help.
wow, thanks for this website who gave the transfer tip & a lot of thanks to the “Jeff on July 18th, 2009 at 10:12 pm” who posted authorization tip.
One thing to conclude: Apple is not as Genius as iPhone users :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I was getting so worried, it’s so simple yet so descreet. There’s no way I could have thought of this myself….
THANKS YOU
Thank you very much – I was really worried that I would have to re-purchase my apps.
Thank you
Why is this feature not a more obvious button on itunes? It seems to make sense to me to have this on the applications tab of your itunes when syncing the phone. Anyway, thanks so much for the post. This helped me out a lot.
Thank you so much. After weeks of trying to get this to work at the “Genius Bar” to no avail…
I Finally have my apps backed up!
Thank you again!
Thank-you so much!!! Finally after reinstalling Windows 7, I can still have my apps. :D
Thank-you!!!
Exactly this. Thank you very much, Jenny!
This is what I did – I was stupid enough to transfer my Apps to iTunes on my Mac, then delete the apps from iTunes!
Thankfully, I kept the Apps in a MOBILE APPLICATION folder in iTunes.
Now I cannot seem to bring these apps back to my iPhone!
HELP PLEASE!!
thanks man you are awesome… i was afraid i was gonna have to delete all the apps from my gf’s phone
I tried clicking the transfer purchases and it didn’t work until I authorized the iphone on this computer in the itunes store. Also, I had some purchases that I executed on the iphone and others on my PC. When I selected the sync applications it popped up a warning that it would remove all apps from my iphone and erase any data associated with them which sounded like it was just going to remove all apps from my iphone. I can report that after authorizing the iphone on my computer, that it did not erase anything and in fact just transfered the apps from my iphone to my PC and the new apps purchased on my PC to my iphone without messing up anything.
TY !!!
if i have a hacked ipod touch would winterbord and cydia transfer too???
@omar, this seem to only work with apps that were purchased from the apple store. All my cracked/jailbroken apps did not transfer to itunes.
You are a freakin genius TY soooo much. I was worried i’d have to re-download all my apps and pay again.
It doesn’t work with jailbreak? aw shit, that really sucks, all my apps are off installous.
Thanks for the tip. I lost all my apps on the last backup after my screen was cracked. It really annoyed me and I was dissapointed with the help from the Mac people. It’s no wonder Microsoft are kicking their asses with market share. Lucky for them that Microsoft didn’t think of the ipod/iphone first.
Cheers
Thankyou, My Power PC imac died so when i tried to sync up with my newer intel iMac i struggled for days to find a way to save the apps I already had. It is so simple. Why don’t Apple add it to a FAQ page?
Cheers
This is so ‘apple’ – they are stuck on design and style.
I had the same issue with my 3Gs and like most of Itunes – it’s intended to be eye-candy rather than the best way to manage your phone & apps.
The phone UI is bordering on excellent, but it stops there. completely.
A below average handset, a very good handheld computer, with vast app support, and an inconsistent, dare I say ‘fat’ desktop support package.
((I keep my N95 handy for important phone calls!)
Fantastic! Thank you so much.
hiii..
this is fine..
but how can i add applications to itunes…
my apps wont come in its so irritating. WHAT DO I DO?
THANK YOU! It’s always a simple answer, but it’s so frustrating until you find it.
AWESOME! I Knew there had to be a way. thanks
Thanks a ton! I spent an hour looking for a program to recover my apps and found out it wasn’t compatible for iPod touches or iPhones. Then I came across this and got my iPod fixed in less than half an hour. Thanks again!
Thanks! Works perfectly.
Hey ; i downloaded a bunch of apps from my friends itunes when i was at his house the first day i got my itouch. but when i click sync applications it says. Are you sure you want to sync applications? all existing applications and their data will be replaced with applications from this itunes library
does it actually replace them all?
how to transfer apps from iphone 23G to iphone 3GS?
http://iphoneservicesdepot.com/blog/?p=16
Thank you so much! That was a ton of help!
THANK YOU!!!
I am trying to transfer my apps and ringtones to another computer, I have already authorize the computer but I am getting am error message in Itunes saying I can’t transfer my apps because the computer is not authorize, although it is…What is my next step??
Thanks for the post. Moving apps from iPhone to iPhone 3GS and was not transferring the apps or including in restore from backup.
This worked perfectly. Cheers from Denver
HELP! While transfering all of my media to another hard drive, I accidently deleted all of my apps from my computer from the mobile applications folder. Al of my apps are still on my phone but there is a (!) next to all of them in my itunes. I am scared to sync my phone as I may lose all of my apps. Anyway to transfer from phone to computer???????? PLEASE HELP!!!
Thanks so much!! I’m traveling overseas and this saved my butt. Have apps on my son’s ipod that my wife bought, and apps on my iphone that I bought, and this I’m a devout Apple fan but it really irks me that this was buried in a “right click” feature, rather than being up front in the options. Why???
Thanks heaps!
WOW This was like a cakewalk and it seemed to a rock mountain before i read this…………….Thanks a zillion mate for this oneeeeeeeeeeeee
Thnks so much! you prolly saved me an hour or 2 of searching like a maniac :)
Cheers
Goodness…. Can apple make it tougher than that! Holy crap I’ve been looking for an hour. Thanks a lot for this tutorial… LIke one comment up there stated, I guess not even apple can think of all the possible tutorials they need to provide to their users.
Cheers mate!
Thanks so much, this has saved me hours of hassle! Too bad Apple is so ridiculous that this wasn’t an obvious option to begin with. I won’t even get started on the sweatshop build quality of their products.
Indeed works! Many thanks for the hint!
Thank You – Very useful info
thank you so much…after my pc crashed i was afraid have to re-purchase my paid apps..Ur site is a real lifesaver!!! GRT!
OMG, i was desperately about to download all my apps again from the store after clicking about every option in iTunes, quickly stopping the “sync”-action cause it would delete all my apps on my iPhone. Then this post from heaven came to me, i just had to thank you for making this public!!
I just tried this, for the first time, and authorized my computer. What is strange is it says I have authorized 2 computers out of 5? What does this mean? Why did it say 2 computers?
And after you reach 5 what happens? So let’s say I need to replace this computer with a new one, after 5 I can no longer use the apps I’ve purchased?
How does it figure out a new computer. I often have to re-install my system from scratch, probably several times a year. Does this mean I could run out of my allocated systems in a year?
Thank you soo much!!
you really saved my kahonies…Kudos~!
i did this and it worked. thank you! but my question is, does this also transfer and save application data? or just the application? meaning, I want to make sure all my game progress on an application is saved when it is transferred. please help!
Thanks! This worked great. After Vista crashed and burned and I lost my whole ITunes library (media backed up) I installed a copy of XP and in the course of reistalling all the other softeare I use downloaded the freshest version of iTunes but for every type of content on the iPhone I would get warnings that if I synced all my data on the phone would be wiped. I had found ways without iTunes to to back up all the content on my iPhone except for Apps. I suspected that it was because I still have 3.0 and won’t upgrade because I fear my tethering will no longer work I was just about to give up when I found your post. I siad to myself out loud , “DUHH !!!” This must be in the iTunes or iPhone manuals someplace but dammed if I can find it. Thanks again, very helpful.
In my case it does not work I can’t select the “sync applications”, no matter what.
You can see it here:
http://screencast.com/t/NTNiZGU5M
Thanks a lot for this. Wasn’t sure what to do after i’d tried “check for available downloads”!
I really tried all of the above, de-authorizing, authorizing, connecting, disconnecting my iphone 3GS, restarting the computer and the phone, checking both for the latest version of the software, but I still can not check the “sync application” button, it just does not react, allthough the computer is authorised and I can see which apps I purchased in a regular way with the same computer and the same account. I have control over all the rest: ringtones, music, movies…I can check them and uncheck them, but I can’t do that with the apps…getting desperate after hours of trying…anybody knows what to do???
Marco, I had the same issue as you and solved it this way:
http://www.xaviermorera.com/2010/01/application-tab-greyed-out-on-itunes-cannot-install-or-transfer-apps-on-iphone/
*to Xavier below*
OMG THANKYOU XAVIER, i could not work this out i thought i was going crazy. so many people have asked this question and you are the first to answer it. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
the reply from Xavier is spot on! many thanks for the link: http://www.xaviermorera.com/2010/01/application-tab-greyed-out-on-itunes-cannot-install-or-transfer-apps-on-iphone/
mine still wont sync, it attempts to do it before cancelling, any ideas anyone? this is annoying.
hello, mine will not work, i have tried everything that everyone has told me to do and it just wont work, i downloaded the new itunes but it just wont let me do it, i press transfer purchase and it goes to sync then dont, i really need help!
soooooo frustrating.
i have the first generation ipod? does that make a difference pleaseeee help….. thank you xx
Thanks for this very easy tutorial. You saved my ass tho!
Thank you.
Dude you are awesome, so simple once I stumbled across your post… yet I wasted so much time getting here!!!!!
You rock, thanks for the share
OMG! thank you for this – such a simple step. Was freaking i’d have to purchase everything all over again!
i love you no homo
if u still cant sync, this maybe due to ur application are not originally from app store….itunes just can sync application from app store…if i not mistaken…
You Rock!
Wow, thank you so much. I didn’t want to have to redownload all those apps again.
This is a real time and headache saver.
+1 to you!!!!
Just wanted to say thanks for the simple trick! It was driving me nuts!
you saved my life!
Mayby Apple should consider updating Itunes to not “hide” these features ;).
Well anyway THANKS for saving my day!
Thanks a ton….
So simple and yet gave me such greif, you are the man and I feel so stupid yet releaved.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!
Mike
You saved me omg I couldn’t figure out what I was going to do. So easy to understand too
Worked like a charm.. You saved me!
Thankyou!!
thank you so much! this really worked fantastically 4 me! :) :) :)
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I’ve tried many many things & nothing worked!! This did… YAY!!!
I’ve tried all methods above, authorising, disconnecting, transfer purchases, restriction off, etc. and I still can’t get my apps to sync to the itunes library nor do anything on the application tab when I’ve connected my iphone to itunes. Can some kind souls help me?? Thanks a lot.
i tried sync the applications with the remove all apps on iphone and replace with library and those apps i purchased on iphone are gone. Can someone please help!!!
Excellent. Saved me too. I believe all my podcasts and ringtones and photos came too…. at least it looks that way.
Jacqueline: I think you will have to re-download all the apps since you synced from iTunes and there was apparently nothing in the library. Did you ignore the warning pop-up? I believe any free apps would then be gone too? If so, you are at the point where you would need to grab them again. The paid ones should not cost anything since the iTunes Store will have a record of your paying for them already.
Dave, I read some of the posts above and someone mentioned it didn’t cause him/her any problem and everything comes back so I tried as kind of a last resort. But my apps are gone!! Is there anything I can do now??
THANK YOU!! I was going crazy trying to figure out how to get my Apps from phone to my computer iTunes!! This worked! Thanks!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you!
thank you so much nice tuto
Thank you!!!! A quick and clear answer to what I imagine is a common problem. ♥!
Hi, i’ve been trying to do this forever i made sure my computer is authorized and everything and it still won’t transfer the purchases it says they still can’t be played on the computer. i’ve even done what you in this tutorial 10 times.
Thank you so much, just saved all my sons games that he has spent a fortune on. I was in a panic that I would have to pay again to replace them all. THANK YOU X
U DA BEST
thanks
GENIUS
Hi guys,
I had the same issue. but the solution I found is hilariously easy. As soon as I authorized my new iTunes, I was able to transfer all the purcheses I had made on my iphone.
G
Thank you so much; makes me wonder though, why does apple not make info like this more available and why do they not make the transfer not work with media. There are simple things that would make itunes better.
You need to authorize the computer first and then plug iphone and transfer all purchases.
Hi…Aslam O Alikum to all ………My iphone is showing only ten pages of applications..but i have installed almost 17 pages from itunes…i have sync iphone again and again..but it is not showing more than 10 pages..itues installs the 17 pages but iphone does
you are a star transfer of purchases went A1 many thanks
Thanks a lot =)
I don’t get it, it still doesn’t work for me.
I have authorized iMac, plugged in iPhone 3G and evey time I do it just does the same thing:
1. Backup iPhone
2. Transfer purchases (but nothing ever gets moved)
3. Sync
Even if I right click and choose transfer purchases it does the same thing.
So syncing my iPhone when I buy a new song/rip a new CD album takes me like 20 mins or so!!!
So frustrating.
thanks this has been a problems for me for a long time.
Thank you sooooo much. I was just about to repurchase all apps on iTunes! Something told me to GOOGLE it, and there it was!
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I was having all kinds of trouble and followed all the directions to authorize, etc. When I would click on “Transfer Purchases” it would start, and show copying applications at the top of itunes and show on my iphone that a sync was in progress, then the iphone screen would power off, even though itunes was still showing copying… It turns out that an application was causing it to stop. It was a golf game. I deleted the golf game on the iphone and then tried again. All my apps are now copied into itunes. itunes may be the worst software ever, btw. Usually when you think of the word “syncing” it means a two way thing. Not at all the case for itunes. Come on Apple, you can do better.
This didn’t work at all for me but I finally got it working. SO for those of you who had no success following the instructions on this page to fix it I had to go to iTunes Store on my iMac, re-download everything onto iTunes then sync the iPhone and iTunes.
Now it doesn’t say transferring purchases anymore. PHEW. Took a while but so worth it.
PS – It will say are you sure you want to buy this but rest assured if you have autorized your iTunes with the same account as your iPhone it won’t charge you twice.
Thanks!!
SO HELPFUL!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Thanks dude!!!
This didn’t really work for me. I have downloaded some apps on itunes and they are on my computer but they wont sync to my ipod touch. I clicked on the sync and it came up that it would wipe my apps currently on my ipod so i clicked okay and then it synced for a while and i checked my ipod and nothing had changed, i still had my old apps and my new apps didn’t go on. could someone please help ?
thank you s much my friend i was looking in all websits for a software transfer but your way is much easy and fast,,,,,thannnnnnnnnnnnnnks alot god bless you
Awesome thanks
Life Saver!! i been trying to download all sorts of things to do this! thanks
Even if you “buy” the app again you will not have to pay for it. iTunes keeps track of your licensed software.
This was a good thread to read!
Thanx all!
//E
tried this before. didn’t work, still isn’t working. any other idea?
thank you so much! really appreciate you taking the time to post this
thanks man
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You…..You’re a life saver….Last time I ended up repurchasing all my apps….They didn’t cost….But it was a pain in the ass…..again….Thank You…
Thanks man! I was trying to figure this out too!
Apple, you need to add a checkbox in the applications tab that is intuitive. This option is hidden. Yes, it’s very simple once you know, but the average Joe does not know to look there.
A billion thanks ……. Love you….
Perfect! Thanks. Why didn’t I see that. Was driving me crazy!!!!
Thank you, I just installed iTunes on a new computer and deleted my apps twice while doing a sync. I searched all the menus and options but forgot about right click. Its unbelievable that this is hidden in that way and that a sync does not give the option to transfer.
HELLO APPLE a simple check box or button to transfer in the apps tab would be nice. Sorry to rant but i hate iTunes
Hey just saying thanks also. Look at how many people you’ve helped mate!
yeah mannnn, now i can get both apps from my iphone and my laptop, thanksss a lottttt!!
oh now i know it thanks :D
The apple support was going to charge me $30, to tell me this. I am so glad that I googled and found out this answer. My friends son poured water over my old computer and I was so scared that I was not able to back up my applications. You have heard this a thousand times. But THANK YOU.
Thank you SO much for this post, you saved me a bunch of $ from not having to re-buy my applications – AGAIN! My computer hard drive recently died so I didn’t have everything I needed backed up and luckily with your help I was able to at least save the stuff on my iPhone. ^_^
that easy…i just pooped my pants.
How can i save my itouch games without the authorization in my itunes. when i “Transfer Purchases” authorization will prompt. is anybody know how can i save it without authorization? pls response asap
Thanks for the great tip!! saved my day..
This post is very helpful! Now I can sync downloaded from iPod back to my computer!
Thank you!
My problem was I had two iTunes accounts. One on my computer and a different one on my iPhone. I thought they were the same but one had my e-mail extension on it and one didn’t so they looked the same to me. When I changed the account on my computer, the apps would transfer.
this post isn’t helpful. I can’t sync my applications just because they don’t work with a computer!
I would totally kiss you right now. Thanks for this tip. So simple, yet so easy to overlook! Shame on Apple for not making this more obvious.
thank you so much….
i’m happy now… ^^
great job !! :)
This IS a lifesaver. I screwed up my dad’s apps on the iPhone after syncing and didn’t know what to do. Thanks to you I fixed it!
Bless you.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks a ton!
Man, you do rock. Now i know im in the right way, but it still didnt work. Everything happened as you said, but as soon as the bar starts to fill it stops and no apps are synced.
My conection is perfect, my iphone cable is also alright, im syncing music normally…
does anybody have the same problem? Can anyone help me?
Thanks! I had the same problem. Finally I can organize my apps through iTunes.
Please help I am not very IT literate – tried to authorise my computer through Itunes but get the message itunes could not connect to itunes store – the network connection timed out make sure you network connects are correct and your network connection is active and try again?????
Hi, I did as you said but nothing appear in Applications tab, no app, nothing. I even searched for .ipa files on C:/ but nothing.
When I click on transfer purchased is showing me some activity for 1-2 sec but it seams that is not transferring any app I have bought on my iPod touch.
Any help? Many thanks!
thankyou SO much, been playing with this for damn near an hour now and was getting nowhere fast, worked like a charm
awesome! big ups!
Thanks!! I’ve been looking for a way to do this for a long time!
Awesome, you’d of thought this kind of function would be seamless! Especially for apps that don’t conflict.
Anyway, great tip!!!
Jenny,
I had quite a lot of apps installed directly from iPhone and worried to sync them with an empty iTunes library on PC
googling I found your tip
youe gave us an explanation so simple, essential and missing from the Apple iPhone User Guide .
Thanks a lot !!
Sergio
P.S. I had to “authorize” my PC before proceeding
thanks! saved me so much time, effort, and money in case of a future potential ipod crash or restoration :)
Very helpful, lad.
im trying to cop all my songs from m ipod touch to my computer, but it says i have to authorise it, but i already have. what do i do?

Hey how can i retrieve my application which are removed from Iphone when i clicked on Sync Application.
thanks a lot…i had been worried to loose all my applications sing my original laptop crashed.
Thanks so much, you are a legend!
What I don’t understand is why Apple are kind enough to tell you there are paid apps on the iPhone that aren’t in the library, but then not tell you how to fix it?!? At least this came up when I googled the problem!! Thank god for Google!!
This is great. I just got an iPad and realized that a ton of apps never got copied over and then realized they were not on my computer. Your tip has now moved them to my computer and I can copy to my iPad. THANKS!!! :)
So simple, this saved me hours of frustration, thanks
thank you, thank you thank you!
thanks so much i was going to jailbreak my ipod touch but i was worried if i did it would delete all my music and apps and i did not have them on my computer but you made it look so simple thanks a lot!!

You’re completely my hero!
Thanks a million, it helped a lot also to me!! So simple yet, so hided! Anybody knows if when sync the applications to my iTunes the content of the applications also get backed up (for example I’ve an app to keep the records of my expenses, but not sure if this get backed up or not)
THANKS!

THANK YOUUU :) exactly wat I needed
Thank you!! I thought it had to do with switching between computers. :-)
Thanks. This is it
Thanks so much! This is exactly what I needed!
Thanks so much you saved my life:)
Thank you so much you saved my life:)
Warning! Make sure you are logged in before doing this! I had just installed Itunes and thought I was logged in when I was not. Itunes preceded to delete my applications from my Itouch!
I then logged in and authorized my computer, which I thought was already authorized. After that, this worked fine.
I now have to go email support and figure out how to get back the applications that were deleted. Fortunately, I had stopped the transfer before all my apps were deleted!
brilliant…. thanks for the advice Jenny……
dude this helped alot thanks…
Does it work in 3.1.3?
i tried to do that and it said that one or more apps were n ot authorizied to play on my computer.

I literally sat there for days thinking about how I could get my apps onto my new computer! I LOVE YOU. x

I tried this and selecting File and Transfer purchases, but it won’t work. It says I am unauthorized to play them on this computer. I tried authorizing my computer multiple times but it says it’s already authorized. When I try it again, it still says im unauthorized. I have a PC running windows vista and an iPhone 3Gs. Any Ideas on how to help me? I want to get all my apps and songs/videos to my laptop.
Legend! Thanks heaps.
Thanks mate!!! This has been driving me crazy – but such a simple fix !!
Thank you SOOO much! I also can’t believe this is not an easily accessible instruction elsewhere or even offered alongside the standard synch. I was so frustrated that I’d spent money on apps that I then couldn’t keep if I synched apps between iTunes & the iPhone. Uber-thanks Nick!
what if my apps are jailbroken not from the itunes store will it still work plez realey need help thanx ………
OMG! Thank you times a billion! I was so frustrated with Itunes telling me that it wants to erase everything on my iphone in order to sync to a blank app list..

THANKKS!
Great tip! Spent a couple of hours pulling my hair out over this! Why, Oh Why did Apple not make this obvious in their docs or in their tutorials?????
Excellent, this had me stumped for a couple of days.
This totally did nothing for me.
It says “transferring purchases” for like a split second and then stops.
you are god!!! thanks!!
This helps loads but I’m having a major problem, it still wont let me show my applications because is says that that are not aloud to be played on this computer, what do I do?
Thanks so much, saved my life!
Oh thanks goodness I found this! I was getting desperate, I didnt want to remove everything in my iphone and start from scratch. Thanks so much!
Niice 2 years later and your info is still a BIG help!
THANKS!
When i tried using transfer purchases,i am getting error in transfers stating computer is not authorised, even though i have authorised my PC.Please advice
Fantastic tip, saved me a load of hassle.
Cheers!!!
Thanks a lot Jenny and also huge thanks to Freeedy, it’s really hard to work with iTunes; it’s Applefriendly instead of userfriendly !!
dear sir, madam i have not any mobile i need a iphone
AWSOME THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This helped me just a little bit but thanks.
I just got a new PC and i was almost crying cuz i couldn’t put all my 437 apps on iTUNES. Cuz when i clicked on ” transfer purchases” it started transfering for 2 seconds and that’s all.
SO ALL YOU GUYS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM :
1 – click on “store”
2- click on ” allow the computer”
3- try again clicking on ” tranfer purchases”
DATTZ ALL ;D GOOD LUCK YALL !!
Thank you soooo much. I was losing my mind over this!
Hi!
You were great to post this solution!!! I was so worried not to be able to sync my apps!! It was so simple but I doubt I would ever figure this out by myself!
Thanx a million!!!!
I did the whole transfer purchases thing but this message comes up every time saying your computer is not authorized to play these songs but my computer is authorized. Ive tried deauthorizing it and authorizing all over again but no luck.
It works, but with some problems though: I have to do that almost every time I sync! Then I disconnect, go offl;ine and have to re-d all the thing all over again the next time. I can’t do that!!! It takes almost 30 minutes to transfer all my apps movies and music! Do I have to do that every 3-4 days??? There must be some permanent solution!
I am one of the few folks whose transfer-apps-from iPhone-to-iTunes problem was not solved by this thread; no matter what I tried, I continued to get the message that my computer was not authorized to play the apps I’d purchased. After hours of frustration, I finally stumbled upon the answer, and I’ll post it here in case it helps someone else. It turns out, I have TWO iTunes accounts–both use the same password, but the “user name” for one account is my entire e-mail address, while the user name for the other is the first half of my e-mail address (the part before the @). I have no memory of creating two accounts, but obviously I did. Anyway, all of my apps had been purchased with the first account, but when I “authorized my computer,” I was signed in under the other account. I began to catch on when I looked up the “purchase history” for my iTunes account and there was no record of apps that I knew I had purchased. In fact, iTunes had e-mailed me the receipts. It was in looking up those old e-mails that I finally noticed the discrepancy in user names. So I signed out from the “wrong” iTunes account and signed in under the “correct” one. (I could now see my complete purchase history.) I authorized the computer for the “new” account, and sure enough–everything transferred.
YOu totally rock!!! I’ve been trying to sync my apps into a new computer for 3 hours straight to no avail including having to restore the phone after deleting most of them. Then I read your post and realized that I did have another account. Went to the App store on the phone, found the account name and voila! it was a different one than the ones I’ve been trying to use all this time. THANKS, THANKS, THANKS!
Thanks! This saved me a lot of time and unecessary effort.
WHOAH!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!
LIKE SERIOUSLY, HAVE MY BABYS….
JOKES
BUT SERIOUSLY…..
THANKS
this doesn’t work for me. all purchases transfer, but then as soon as i say ‘sync’, about sixty of them disappear and only 27 are left.
Thanks – very well explained! Very clear and my problem was solved in seconds! Thanks keep up the good work!
Paul.
you’re a genius!! GENIUS!!
you’re a genius!! GENIUS!! Thnk you soooo much.
Dude, a lifesaver!!! Thanks so much!
Thanks for the info!
Would you by chance know how to transfer an application (manga app) purchased from my iphone which cannot be read by itunes?
Whenever I try to sync music, the applications I’ve downloaded transfers first and it keeps on saying that the disk (manga app) cannot be read and doesn’t allow me to sync music.
What should I do?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! <3
read some comments about “not working”.
I use 2 Itunes accounts. 1 for those apps that are not available in my country… so apparently some apps are NOT authorized (thus NOT transferred) to Itunes. You need to authorize both (or several) accounts to transfer them all.
Maybe this can help some of you.
THANK YOU!!!
i cannot upload my files an eror appears coud u tell me what to do
i had cracked apps in my i phone and i am not able to add them to itunes could any one help me how to add these apps to iphone
thanks. i just got an ipad and thought i was going to buy my apps all over again. you just saved me some serious time and money or having to deal with the “geniuses” at the mac store. thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Thankyou !
nearly lost all of my apps due to an update.
I have been trying to do this and it isn’t working. I go an right click my Iphone then click transfer purchases and it starts to sync then seems to stop. When it “done” I guess none of my apps appear in Itunes. What am I doing work or is there a setting that I may have one that should/shouldn’t be on.
Thanks,
Wil
Figured it out. Gotta sign in before you sync them up. >.<
Thank you my friend… You made my day

A really simple tip, but so so helpful. Thanks very much.
Hi, I have just downloaded iTunes for my computer to use at my home because I usually download apps through wireless at my other house. Anyways being as I already have apps on my iPod from wireless it sais when I download apps from iTunes on my computer iTunes sais all old apps will be erased.
Any help please!!!
Well, I tried it and it didn’t work. There is certainly a record of all my purchases but it didn’t bring back any of the ones I had done since my Mac crashed. It only shows the apps I have downloaded since I got my iPhone 4.
Thank you very much! I’ve been really pissed off on not knowing how to backup my file and not being able to upgrade my phone to iOS4.
Thank you!
thanks man saved my life there!!!
Legend
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
You are awesome.

Your tip really save a million trouble for me.
Thanks so much! I was getting really frustrated and your discovery is just what I needed, lol!
Thnx.. I find that iTunes is so messed up design wise, that I never try to find anything anymore. I googled, and found your post in a fraction of the time I could have spent in vain looking! Thanks, :-)K
This was perfect information! Its amazing how many tried on Google it took to get to this link. I would think this would be a fairly highly requested piece of information considering how many people are upgrading their phones. In any case, thanks for taking the time to write this out because like you I was getting pretty frustrated that iTunes would not do this automatically for me.
You rock! Thanks Jenny!
OMG !!! THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So helpful! Thanks.
Great, u saved my music and apps!
woghhh……brilianttt…hahahahha…..i’ll do it rite now..thxxxxxxx so much dude

OMG thanks sooo much this really helped alot!!
:D
Thank you. thank you so muchhhhhhhh………
Thanks a ton for your quick help.
I would like to add my experience to it.
When i tried to ‘transfer the purchase’ the system did not allow as it said the computer is not authorised.
So as a solution you will need to Click the “Store” in “File MENU” of iTunes and then select “AUTHORISE THE COMPUTER” after that you can proceed.
I hope this too helps!!!
Regards,

you rock my world brother!!
when i click transfer purchases it reads “copying facebook” etc… but the progress bar doesn’t move. when it’s finished i can not see anything in the itunes library nor in the mobile apps folder in My Documents. any ideas why i can’t see my apps?
SO glad I wasn’t the only one! THANK YOU I thought I was going crazy!
so simple, thanks for the tip
Thanks, it worked perfectly after locating store at the upper window
you are a god. thank you
this didnt work.
The only reasons it wont work is:
You need to authorise it with your IPHONE itunes account.. not anyone elses iphone that uses the same computer.
Then click Transfer Purchases and it should work
nku soooooooooooo much it really helps! thnks! :)
Was starting to get rather pi$$ed off that Co-Pilot would not transfer across to my new iPhone4 and some other apps…
Thanks for the tip… was starting to pull my hair out, as saw no help on this via Apple…
Fingers crossed this will all work now.
Cheers
Thank You very much!!!! :)

You are a star! My husband the self confessed “geek” who loves all of this stuff has been promising to show me how to do this since I got my iphone (over a year ago), thanks so much for such a helpful post!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!
I face simliir problem when i try to Sync it removes the applications that not in the iTunes So was done they way you menation but i faced another problem which is that it transfer some of the app. not all of them.
I done Something i never thought it will solve the problem which is remove all the iTunes app and connect the Ipad then do Sync. it gives me the massage that the applications are not in the iTunes will be removed for the Divice > then gave me the message that if you need to transfer the application from the ipad to the iTunes and it seems it working fine cause it transfer the all the applications even the ones i had problem to get them to my iTunes before.
Best Regards
it says transferring purchases and then it just stops using an iPhone 3gs on 4.0.1
Please Help!!!No matter how many times I try to sync my apps that I have bought, they don’t make their way onto my phone. I have also been having a problem with the fact it seems to take hours to sync my phone. Any suggestions!?!
Oh cool., thatnx guys, hope it will work with us,,
;) peace out
Legend! spent about an hour trying to figure it out, all apple help articles were usless. Dont believe how simple it is, although i still think it should just be done automatically :(
This was a great tip. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! THank you. I was very scared that I had lost that many apps. (My kid’s) favorite apps at that. Thanks again!
Useless for people wanting to transfer apps from iPhone to a *new* Mac. This only works with the Mac that you usually have “authorized”. What a pain.
This did kinda help me so I know what to do but on me itunes it will not let me sync or do sod all apart from download me pics to the phone. In section to it shows a little list eject, sync transfer etc, all i get is eject the phone,Can any1 help please?
OMGGGG THANKS SOOO MUCH!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this with the blogosphere! I was having trouble getting apps from one computer’s iTunes library to a new laptop (I’m a PC girl) as well as get the apps from the iTouch to the computer as a backup. This worked perfectly and was so easy! I know there are software applications that will do the same thing for a fee and I hope people do not pursue those applications when transferring apps is so simple! Thanks again!

Very useful! Thank you!
Very useful thank you would be nice if you could put it on the Apple site. Thanks
Thx for sharing this info. This was very helpfull! :-)
I’m glad indeed that SOMEONE took the effort of putting this on the internet. Why didn’t Apple did this?
Kind Regards, Frank.
I was having the same issue, you are a star:)
Thought I’d lost everything and this excellent post came to the rescue. Phew! Thank you very much indeed!
thanks a bunch dude!!!
I know I’m supposed to authorize my computer before I can transfer my apps from iphone to itunes – I get the message “go to ‘store’ and authorize” blah blah blah, but I HAVE authorized my computer!! When I try and authorize it AGAIN, the message is “Your computer is already authorized.” I KNOW that! So why does itunes refuse to recognize that fact?!?
LIFE SAVER THANX SO MUCH

Wow thank you I have all my apps on a new install of my computer. iTunes is seriously the most frustrating program to use on earth, syncing just never works… And then to find this it is hidden away in there, apple need to fix this.
Beats asking my husband…. Thx!
if i buy a new computer and then sinc my itouch to it will it lose the achievements that i have for my application
Just wanted to ask does the app data get transferred as well?
Thanks anyway!
I can finally update my ipod to not lose all my apps
Thank you so much, I was going crazy trying to find out how to do this then I googled it and found your notes!
what if your computer aint autorized to do that whats the next best thing can i do
look i am just trying to save my apps but my computer aint autorized is there another program i could use? i am running 4.0.2 please help me
HOW did Apple get the reputation for being easy to use? Coming from the PC platform I find MANY examples like this… simple fixes that are hard as hell to find.
There is a large variation in the quality of Apple’s software. Unfortunately their most used application, iTunes, is one of their worst.
Thank you very much for this article. This has driven me nuts for some time.
Thanks for the tip!!
you are a genius :-) thx for that help. struggled with that but now everything is fine!
you. are amazing. i mean really, i love you. thank you soooo much!!! <3
than you very much
Thanks! So simple, yet so hidden. I searched help for hours, and a quick internet search gave me the answer I needed.
Thankyou. Really appreciate ur help.
YOU ARE MY SAVIOR!!!!
just curious does this also transfer saved data in games and such?
Thank you..
You helped solve a problem that I have been facing for quite some time
Cheers bro. I have had to delete whatever was on the iPod many times since Apple does not make it clear how to perform this function. Worked great. Thank you.
Brilliant, I was looking at loosing my apps and having to repurchase when I googled and came up with your tip. A real ‘life-saver’, thank you sooooooooooooooooooo much!
I think another way to solve this problem is by activating “Genius” from the Itunes store. Maybe it doesn’t work for the iPhone or that it doesn’t work for the second time, but…I haven’t been there yet so it’s still unanswered…? But after looking at previous posts, I guess it only worked for me…lol
THANK YOU this was so simple and helpful!
Thanks a million from a very very grateful user. I was going nuts trying to sync.
Thanks a lot for this helpful tip. It’s so simple once you know how.

Thanx! You made my day, =)
Just in case
I found this excellent iPhone to iTunes tutorial
http://www.from-iphone-to-itunes.com
Worked great for me
Thank you so much. After buying a new iPhone to replace my iPod Touch i had no clue how to transfer apps and why they didn’t do it automatically.

After transferring them, I got an error message saying her computer “isn’t authorized”, even though it is. We re-authorized the computer, and transferred the purchases again, and it worked just fine!

Thanks a lot. Was really worried
THX DUDE U SAVED ME LIFE!
I tryully can say : I Love you man!!
Glad it worked for everyone else. As for me it transfered one application and left many other applications and the associated data on my iphone. Were I too sync much of my data and many applications would be wiped out.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. This was a huge aggravation that you solved very simply.
THANK YOU
This saved me a lot of time – The only way I could think of that it would have been better wwere if I had not wasted so much time looking for it. I could have wasted even more time and lost apps.
Do you have other sites I should check out?
Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Duaine

OMGGGGGGG I WAS HAVING A HEART ATTACK! THINKING I HAVE TO BUY ALL THOSE GIFT CARDS AGAIN AND BUY ALL MY APPS! THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCHHHHHHH! I LOVE YOU FOR IT!!!!
Great tip! Seems so simple but only when you know how!
Does anyone else think working the iphone with itunes, syncing, transferring music etc is a lot more difficult than it should be? Or am I just being stoopid?!
thanks i thought i was going to go insane and lose the cute little apps i got on the phone. you are a lifesaver!
this dint work for me becuase i had to put athorize it and it was my brothers old iphone
I tried the “transfer purchases” selection and it does not work tranfer applications purchased on my IPOD Touch to Itunes. Looks like it it broken now! I am running running the latest Itunes 10.1.0.56 and OS 4.2.1
thanks a lot! I can’t believe it was so simple. We have 5 devices to sink and reloading all the apps would have been a HUGE pain.
This is great. My computer had to be formatted and I was able to get all my music back from my iPod but i could not figure out how to save my apps from my iPhone. No help from iTunes and lots of blogs saying when I tried to sync my iPhone to iTunes that I would lose all of my apps. This was such an easy fix. So glad I found you, I have been seaching for a solution for days. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanx man, that save my ass
Thank you SO MUCH, I was having a hard time figuring this out, just know that you have saved me hours more of banging my head against the wall.
Hey you are awesome thnx man
Thanks you so much Jenny, you made this seem so easy,
I am so gratefull.

Bob
Awesome! I almost panicked as I’m restoring it to sell on ebay. My apps shall be safe in case I buy a new Ipod…right?
Mine still isnt working :/
it says, “you must authorize this computer before you can transfer your purchases”, then i authorized it, then it starts and then says “you are not authorized for these purchases on this computer… what do i do?
That was the first thing I did but it doesn’t work.
Thanks I haven’t paid attention when I have updated my phone and kept erasing all my apps with the few I had in iTunes. Thanks you’re a life saver and time saver because trying to figure what apps I had is a pain.
Unbelievably simple! Yet,no other forum, nor wading through Apple’s pages, could answer this properly. Too bad it took me a year to find your page! Had to reload tons of apps after a lame sync. Thank you infinity times!
How about i love you right now.. i was ready to throw the damn thing!
I have the exact *opposite* problem. I DON’T want to sync apps to my MacBook Pro.
Everything was fine until yesterday when I transfered a PDF to my iPhone via iTunes on my Mac. I then got a message stating that I couldn’t read the PDF until I installed iBooks.
Ok, I thought, since I’m plugged in, I’ll just search for it in the iTunes store and install it. I did a search, found it, downloaded it, but couldn’t see it on my iPhone.
I restarted the phone, still couldn’t see it, so did a drag-and-drop to my iPhone in iTunes and then got a message saying I had to authorise it or iTunes would wipe all the apps off my phone. Stupidly, I did just this, and then iTunes proceeded to transfer all my iPhone apps to my MBP: about a gig of stuff!
I called Apple Support and they said I could easily delete the apps in iTunes as long as I didn’t choose to click on the sync button and there would be no problem (I confirmed this multiple times).
Well, I deleted them, it then automatically updated and wiped all 51 apps from my phone. :(
I thought, “Ok, I’ll just take the time now to take the tick out of “Sync Apps” and “Sync new apps”, update/save the change under the Apps tab for my phone, reinstall my apps, and all will be fine.
Not a bit of it. Even though I have expressly told iTunes I DO NOT WANT to sync apps, when I next plugged in my iPhone, it copied over all my apps again – again taking up disk space I don’t want to waste.
Is there no way to stop this from happening?
So far, all I’ve come up with is a folder action in Automator to delete everything in the Mobile Applications directory under iTunes (which didn’t exist until I authorised it yesterday), saving my disk space.
Very frustrated and hope someone can help with a definitive answer.
Thanks!
Guys seriously. It is a dang toy. People like Nick, yeah I agree with. People like Ggirl, really!!?? This person was helpful but not a lifesaver! It is a toy and some of ya’ll act like your life depends on it!
When you have about 300 euros worth of applications yeah it is a lifesaver,
The man’s a bloody genius!
Thanks loads loads :)) was distressed about it coz I could’nt even update my phone as it kept on saying you ll lose all purchased items, so simple yet so complex :) thanks again
I had tried mine on this but why still not work? Can you share? :(
Thanks you’re a life saver… no points to apple for such a huge usability flaw
Hi people my laptop is broken it keeps freezing like every 5 mins of it being on (any ideas on how to fix plz tell me) so im getting a new 1 for christmas but the only thing is when i plug my iphone into the new laptop at christmas ill have to sync my iphone to a new i tunes which if i remember rightly it deletes everything off ur iphone or ipod if ur using that so my question is do any of you know a way i can move/save everything on my iphone so that after i re synced it i can just quickly transfer everythin over or i will have to try and remember all the apps and over 500 songs i had so that i can download them again which will take forever as i also have tones of apps and tones of contacts too so if u can help great and if u do help then im going to say thanks now so thanks
A simple process made extremely difficult! Thanks
I love the mac, but apple can kiss my ass when it comes to the iphone. What could be performed with just a few clicks with my previous ‘crappy’ phones now requires trawling through the net for answers.i.e. how to stick in your own ringtones for one. Now this appstore nonsense. Sync problems, etc, etc. Granted that one can do more with the iphone than previous phones, but advance shouldn’t be making what used to be easy, difficult. Steve jobs should get his capitalist head out of his ass and do some thinking.
Thanks so much you are the only person who was able to help me out!!!
That’s a great way to transfer purchases from ipod touch to itunes, but what i need to know is how do you transfer an entire library of hacked and ssh’ed apps from one pc and ipod touch to a brand new computer. I absolutely refuse to back up to discs and go that route for it would take nearly 40 disc’s because of how many apps, songs, movies, tv shows I have. I have considered looking for a way to transfer it through my network if that’s some how possible. The old PC doesn’t have a DVD burner or I’d go that route. Also having a jailbroken iPod Touch and not have paid for any of the thousands of apps I have, iTunes doesn’t recognize them to transfer them to it’s library. I’m open to suggestions.
it doesnt work for me, it shows the progress bar and the apps getting transfered but they don appear in the app section of itunes can someone help
hii can someone please help me because i tried it and it did not work. i did everything coreect and then on the transfer bar it schws that it is transfering the apps, but then after 3 seconds it hows that they are transfering it stops and nothing appears ppleasee help mee!!!

I tried this but when it was downloading apps it only did one app and then quit.. I don’t see any apps at all listed however.. I don’t get the screen where you can check each and every app you want to sync. I am lost on how to do this.. I have like 16 apps and wish I could sync them in case I lose them on my phone.
Wonderful, wonderful…. event the people on the Apple support line didn’t know about this tip. Thanks!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
This is G8…..Its working…Thanks Bro
This is a life saver! Thank you for the very helpful tip!
You’re seriously my freakin’ hero right now…. I’d bake you a pie if I could!
I’m been scratching my head for a long time on this one! Thanks for the easy answer! Now why doesn’t Apple share this info?
Thank you!! Life saver
U ARE GOD!
cheers
Sam
awesome – thanks…
Thanks a lot!!!
i’ve had to authorize like 50 times and it says that its authorized but it keeps asking if i wanna authorize >.< someone help me T.T
If my iPod touch was jailbroken, and I tries this, would Cydia still be on it when I restore?
thanks so much man that was awesome man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t often do this–in fact, this I’m a virgin until now–but I’m really glad that I found this simple solution. I recently cloned my old Windows 7 installation to a new HD and somewhere in the process my itunes library was corrupted. When I tried to sync, it told me I would have to erase all of my iphone apps with the blank app library on my computer. This saved me!
woh..was saved..i had about 20 nice games and did not lose it becoz of this site..i luv this site man
COPY IPOD (1G,1ST GEN,iOS 3.1.3)APPS TO ITUNES (10.1.1.4). VERY IMPORTANT… ON IPOD> SETTINGS> GENERAL> RESTRICTIONS “OFF”> DISABLE RESTRICTIONS> INSTALLING APPS “ON”. APPLE, WHEN ONE IS UNABLE TO SELECT GRAYED OUT “SYNC APPS” BOX IN APPS SECTION IN ITUNES, A POP UP SHOULD READ, “RESTRICTIONS ENABLED ON YOUR DEVICE – TURN “ON” INSTALLING APPS TO CONTINUE”. ALSO SHOULD POP UP UNDER “TRANSFER PURCHASES” UNDER SAME CONDITIONS.
Was about to give up on itunes when i stumbled upon your info.
Thanks!
After having spent hours researching how to back up my Iphone apps on my Mac, I came across to your tip and…it worked!
What can I say? Many thanks mate!
I am happy to subscribe to a course with you, if you are looking for a learner ; )

Thanks a lot dude.
Much appreciated!!
Thanks, great tip!!!
Dude!
I love you! Thank you so much!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok.You have an Iphone. That’s great because there aren’t a lot of persons who had the money to buy one.But why not start trying to make some money with that applications and not any money but hundreds or even thounsands of dollars. You don’t need any experience you just need to create the application you’ve always wanted and afterwards sell it.Here are the complete steps and informations you need http://93e83juabeev2l83sbhpiapgq1.hop.clickbank.net/
thanks for the hint. i was searching for that nearly 30mins.
Great Tip!!! Thanks!!!
this was excellent thanks!
Thanks Buddy!
Thank you.
Only now am I comfortable doing a factory restore…..
good work
Thanks a bundle, have 2.5gb on apps on the phone and want to Sync them so I can rearrange on my mac rather than on the iPhone.
You’re a bloody genius. All the other sites just waffled off about things that are off topic or blatantly insipid answers asking one to purchase software. What a breath of fresh air to have a proper answer to a proper question. Kudos to your persistence mate.
Thank you so much for this tip. My macbook pro had to be reformatted so of course I lost everything in my itunes. This was such a quick and easy guide, that just lifted a weight off my chest!
Thank You So Much!!!! I Just Restored My Computer And It Said I Have To Delete All Apps To Sync It. But After This, You Saved My iPod’s Life! You Are Awesome! A+++
ahhhhhhhh i love you!!!!!!
i havee spent so long trying to get them off and BOOM!!! you helped!!!

Wow.
A while back my son dropped my laptop and totally screwed my hard drive. My only option was to go by a new drive and start over. I had some stuff backed up, but not the apps. After Googling around for a long time on how to transfer apps from my iPhone to a new computer, I saw things like, “Shucks dude, bet you wished you woulda backed up your sh_t”, and “Jailbreak is your only option, man”.
Your solution worked like a charm, and was so simply I honestly doubted it would work, until it did :-)
Thank you!!!
thanks so so so so so so much
Thanks soo much for the help bro :) Saved me a lot of time searching how to do this when it was a couple of clicks away
OMG!! I was so happy when I found this solution to my problem! Thanks heaps!
Thanks so much dude….this is awesome…i was trying to figure this out for like 2 hours and u gave me in the answer! cheers!
So simple but has been bugging me for months.
