I have to join the long list of people complaining about loss of snapback. At first I thought it was some setting I'd changed but having looked into it today and reading everyone else's comments I am amazed that Apple have taken the opportunity to remove what was one of Safari's best features, one which used ALL the time.
Cmd+alt+s to go straight back to your search was such a breeze. What's the sense in removing it.
Strangely I notice that the item still exists in the history menu but is greyed out.
If anyone knows how to restore this feature I'll give em a big kiss.
Listen up Apple, don't mess with our features.

The main thing I don't like with Safari 4 -- and it's almost a deal-killer, I'm flirting with Firefox now -- is that hitting the "back" button doesn't take you "back." it takes you to the top of the page you're on, then to the bottom of the previous page, then to the top of the previous page, then... I get impatient after that. Clicking through the New York Times, it can take as many as seven or eight clicks to get to where one click on previous versions would take me.

Hi Tom,
I actually didn't know about SnapBack until this post. Sounds awesome! But from the looks of it, only Search SnapBack is back, not URL SnapBack. The SnapBack icon won't show up no matter what URL I visit, and the Mark Page for SnapBack menu item is gone... Any comments?

Tabs on top was one of those features in the beta that I didn't really like, but then I got used to. As soon as I started up the official release, though, and saw my tabs were back below everything, I actually got angry.
I agree about the tabs on top feature. I didn't like it much at first, but I decided to get used to it because I figured that it was going to be the way Safari would be in the future. Eventually, I started to like the TOT feature. I'm not sure why, but I seemed to have a lot more open tabs while using TOT than I do with the tabs back in their original place. People bitch and whine about a lot of things Apple does, but I think most people would have eventually gotten over this feature if Apple had left it in place. It's not like there aren't other browser choices such as Firefox, Camino, and OmniWeb. My beef against FireFox has always been that it launches slower than Safari, but the latest beta release of Firefox 3.5 launches a lot faster.

re: Snapback , I agree with Alien that the single largest annoyance for me is the lack of Snapback feature for URL. I used it all the time and was for me very efficient when browsing. It is sorely missed and was what distinguished Safari over other browsers for me. It must return. Other features so far seem like more eye candy

Give me back my TOT or at least an option to turn it on or off! It's the best browser improvement in ages.
I agree with the author in most points, but actually I care little about the tabs on top, cuz with Win 7, I can fully aerosnap my Safari window, what the new tabbar prevented. (I also love how all the tabs are separately displayed in the taskbar previews, but that I think has little to do with the tabbar position.) And no separate Stop/Reload is IMO also OK, as the button in the address bar is convenient (for me at least). However, I totally agree about the indicators, the load bar was better in Safari 3.

So boring, what a boring, uninformative, unimaginative article.

How much more boring can it possibly get than to hear some random bloke give his two cents about a web browser.

Ars Technica would do a thorough, almost intellectual analysis, but this blog is just lame. Really feels like 14 year old are writing.

It's official, I won't be visiting any longer
