I certainly love iPhone for telecom/multimedia purposes so I'm not trying to knock it here, but I think the article is a bit off the mark. iPhone is a good gaming device only if your idea of gaming came from playing half baked space invaders and tetris on late 90s' black-and-white Nokia cellphone. In terms of a cultural impact, you should've compared iPhone/Touch to 80s Walkman revolution. It would've been a better analogy.

Gaming industry is an astronomically competitive monster in its own category and Apple is far from even touching it right now. It would require a huge risk-taking in R&D funding, then start worrying about Sony merging PSP with SonyEricsson Walkman. Think about how much money Sony and Nintendo invested to get to where they are and that's purely in gaming industry alone.

"However when a shopper purchases an iPod touch or iPhone they are thinking that this is a device that can play music, browse the Internet, and it can also play games."

PSP anyone...?

"Unlike the leading portable gaming consoles, there is no need for cartridges, a charger, or even money (aside from the cost of the device)."

Leading portable game consoles...? Like one of which being Playstation Portable? It has wifi capabilities (web browser), and ability to connect to the manufactures community site (Playstation Network), and ability to download new software, games, trials etc... And purchased games at retailers globally, long before the iPod touch (which you entitled this article) came out on the market. I own both devices and IMO both have their own particular benefits.

I think the basis for this article was correct... (Where Todays Portable Technology Stemmed From, and Where It's Headed..) However, some of the facts you tried to state or emphasize, were not correct...

Thanks

"The Gameboy set the stages for portable gaming, they were among the first mass produced portable gaming consoles in color"

Really? Of all the mass market portable consoles, the Gameboy was one of the last to go colour (beating only the Wonderswan and Neo Geo Pocket)
