As much as I'm a fan of Apple's products, I can't agree with this post. It's a massive stretch to give any credit to the iPhone for global HSPA coverage.

For one, the iPhone has not had as big an impact elsewhere in the world as it has in the US, where carrier network technology has traditionally lagged behind everywhere else. Nokia, for example, as been selling over 10 million HSPA-enabled N-Series phones every single quarter for years now and is far more dominant around the world.

And most of those broadband wireless networks predate the iPhone 3G or, in some cases, the iPhone itself. Vodacom South Africa, for instance, went live with 3.6Mbps HSDPA way back in early 2006 and had upgraded its network to 7.2Mbps capacity before the iPhone 3G was announced in July 2008. Clearly, the iPhone's existence had no impact on that rollout.

No doubt iPhone isn't meaningless but for most of the world it's still limited to one carrier that may not be at the top of the curve. There are more USB HSPA dongles out there than iPhones and iPhone sales are only a small fraction of mobile phones sold -- a billion or more every year.

iPhone is more important in countries like the US who haven't been leading the pack in mobile service.

This is great to know that you can pretty much travel anywhere and there be wireless broadband. Hopefully the more this grows the less expensive oversea charges will become.
