What happens when a bunch of really smart and musically inclined PhDs who make iPhone apps team up with a popular hip-hop recording artist? You get a recording studio-quality, karaoke-style machine in your pocket, otherwise called I Am T-Pain ($2.99). It’s the latest in a string of audio-based hits from Smule, and is available in the App Store today.

If you’ve been dreaming of sounding like T-Pain — or just want that glass-shattering voice to sound half-way respectable, like me — then the I Am T-Pain application for iPhone is your ticket. By incorporating Auto-Tune technology (secret sauce, compliments of Antares Audio Technologies), anyone’s voice is enhanced, sounding as if it came from a recording studio. Marry that to Smule’s real-time audio processing, and you’re on your way to earning a platinum record…or at least some free beverages when you become the hit of the party using I Am T-Pain.

The app comes loaded with tracks from T-Pain’s hit music, which you can sing along to using the scrolling lyrics onscreen. Sing alone (not recommended in the shower; iPhones are pricey) or with friends, and have I Am T-Pain record your song. Or you may choose to use the freestyle mode, and do your own thing. All the while, Auto-Tune is making you sound like a star! When you’ve settled on something that’s ready to be “played to eleven,” you can save the recording, and share via email, Facebook or MySpace. And if you get bored of the tracks it comes loaded with, use the in-app purchasing option to expand on your fun.

Similar to Smule’s Sonic Vox, your voice is captured from the iPhone microphone (which is why iPod touch users are not able to play in this sandbox), processed inside that little slice of miracle we all know as the iPhone, and played via the internal speaker or headphone output. An impressive feat, to be sure. However, it’s probably useful to note that the sound output is going to sound orders of magnitude better through headphones or speakers plugged into the headphone jack (notice in the YouTube videos — linked below — it’s always with external speakers).

As of this writing, I hadn’t yet had any hands-on time with I Am T-Pain. And that’s a shame, too, because I’m pretty much the world’s most awful singer, and it would have been a great test to see how my voice would have fared, using I Am T-Pain with Auto-Tune. And you better believe I would’ve posted links to the result here. Maybe keep an eye on the comments in case I post an example later on…

In the meantime, check out the YouTube videos of T-Pain showing off his new app to friends, artists and random folks on the street. (The second one is really pretty cool.) This thing looks like a lot of fun. So if you’re into T-Pain, or just want to have some karaoke-style fun with your iPhone, check out the I Am T-Pain application in the App Store.

Learn to play the leaf trombone, perform your repertoire before a global audience, and prepare to be judged.

Since the App Store’s launch last year, Smule has been steadily building an impressive portfolio of sound-based social apps for the iPhone. With Dr. Ge Wang — an assistant professor in Music and Acoustics — at the helm, among a smattering of clever and fun sonic toys, their biggest hit to date has been the multi-award winning Ocarina.

Smule’s latest app, Leaf Trombone: World Stage, is a social musical instrument designed specifically for the iPhone. Players can download new songs and perform before a judging panel of other leaf trombonists.

Leaf Your Troubles Behind

In terms of igniting the musical imagination of touch and iPhone owners around the world, Smule’s standout moment has been the creation of Ocarina. The app is an enchanting recreation of the palm-size wind instrument, incorporating several features that take advantage of the iPhone’s tech to connect instrumentalists around the world.

Leaf Trombone: World Stage takes the wind instrument concept even further than before. For musical beginners, Ocarina was a serious toughie, whereas playing the leaf trombone is a breeze for musicians and fresh starters alike.

There are two methods for tooting on your leaf trombone. For beginners, there’s touch mode. Simply tapping and holding on one of the vertical note-markers plays the note. Advanced players can take it further by blowing in to the iPhone microphone — ideal for adding nuance to a performance.

Song Selection

Despite having just been released, there’s already a stack of tunes ready to toot in the song library. The selection on offer is constantly growing, too, as Smule’s provided a song composition and submission platform on their site.

There’s something for everyone in the library. Classical picks like “Ave Maria” and “Auld Lang Syne” sit alongside rock and metal renditions, such as “Iron Man” and “Through The Fire And The Flames.” Notably, there are video game tunes in the mix, too, with several pieces from Legend of Zelda already on offer. The only major drawback with the library is that there’s no way to differentiate between pieces for beginners and more accomplished players.

If you’re familiar with rhythm action games like Rock Band or Tap Tap Revenge, it’s easy to get your fingers around performing the songs. Once the track begins playing, accompanied by a dainty Mario-esque music box, leaves begin floating towards the different note-markers. The note-markers glow when a leaf collides, meaning there’s a clear guide to playing the correct note at the correct time.

There is, like any musical instrument, an initial period of getting comfortable holding and touching the leaf trombone and familiarizing yourself with the interface. However, actually playing a complex score should be surprisingly intuitive, even for non-musicians.

World Stage – Judging & Performing

Fire up your leaf trombone for more than a few minutes and there’s a good chance that your solo soliloquy will be interrupted with an invite to be a judge on the World Stage. As a judge sitting on an “American Idol”-esque panel with two other players, picked from across the globe, you’ll critically appraise a fellow leaf trombonist’s performance.

Represented by three smiley-styled emoticons, the judging panel listens to the performance — posting comments and changing the emoticon to reflect opinion and mood. At the end of the song, you’re invited to score the performance and provide closing thoughts.

Playing the role of judge is an excellent twist on traditional multiplayer gaming. There’s something deliciously addictive and downright fun about judging — whether you’re praising, encouraging, or just laughing at someone’s trombone tooting.

Judging a performance also earns you Leaf Tokens, the currency of the budding Leaf Trombonist. Each performance on the World Stage costs one Leaf Token, an exceedingly cunning solution, on Smule’s part, to ensuring players are involved in both performing and judging, and also encouraging performers to practice a solo before playing online.

Performing works slightly differently compared to the judging. After selecting a song from the library, you’ll perform alone. Once you’ve completed your performance, the judging panel is then selected to appraise it — meaning you’re able to initially perform without being distracted by a shower of praise, or worse, an onslaught of criticism.

Summing Up

Leaf Trombone: World Stage is everything we’ve come to expect of Smule. The instrument part of the game draws non-musicians in — it’s so easy to get satisfying results and is enjoyable to play (plus endearingly individual with its comedic tooting and parping).

And it’s daring, too, linking players up for social fun a refreshing way: Being part of the judging panel is compelling fun and performing on the World Stage — and getting right — just feels good, too.

Leaf Trombone is a wonderful instrument and an incredibly accomplished social toy. Furthermore, like any musical instrument, it’s something that you’ll delight in playing and growing with over time. Smule’s ability to manifest pure gold out of a downright silly concept, earns this app TheAppleBlog Gold Award.

With all the big announcements from Apple’s iPhone briefing yesterday, the web has been abuzz with talk about the impact this will have on the iPhone. I managed to corner a few iPhone developers that have paid releases out in the app store now to get their first reaction to the news.

Smule

The team at Smule, the people who brought us Ocarina, Sonic Lighter, and Zephyr, were featured in the briefing with Apple yesterday. They demoed a new app that will take advantage of the peer-to-peer API’s in the iPhone 3.0 SDK.

Yeah, we offered a sneak peak of our new product, Leaf Trombone: World Stage, the first massive multi-player social music game (that’s a mouthful sir). We demonstrated a duet over their new Peer-to-peer API. In effect, this allows to devices to discover and pair, regardless of wifi/cell, etc. The discovery capability is quite neat. And the bandwidth is pretty darn good.

Ge and David performed “Phantom of the Opera” as a duet over bluetooth on two iPhones, which everyone can now enjoy by streaming the presentation. Of course, we haven’t seen all the magic that has become possible with the iPhone 3.0 SDK.

We have held back some of the more significant components of the leaf trombone for when we launch the product…

Iconfactory

Craig Hockenberry is a principal at Iconfactory, the collective of creative minds that brought us App Store favorites Twitterific and Frenzic. When asked about his reaction to today’s announcements, Craig was most impressed by the forward momentum of the iPhone platform.

“The thing that’s most positive in my mind is that today showed us how serious Apple is about this platform. They are not resting on their laurels: this release includes major enhancements for users and developers alike. “

Gedeon Maheux, another princiapl at Iconfactory, expressed his excitement and concerns about the new SDK.

We’re very excited about the potential opportunities that 3.0 represents, but there are also the possibility of pitfalls such as creating “content-free” apps that need paid upgrades to really deliver.

When asked about other changes, Craig felt that it was going to take some time to see how the App Store in-app payment mechanism would affect their current and future products. When pushed for further reaction, no single feature seemed to elicit enough excitement to bring out the CHOCKLOCK today, but expect some ALL CAPS tweets once developer.apple.com is back up and Craig can get his fleshy palms on the 3.0 SDK.

GroceryIQ

Jason Boehle is the co-founder of Free State Labs and one of the developers behind GroceryIQ. The company has since been acquired by Coupons, Inc. and development continues on the next version of the GroceryIQ app which will include syncing shopping lists between phones.

The most significant new feature announced today for Grocery iQ is push notifications. For example, you can know when your significant other adds an item to your shopping list. We are working on phone-to-phone sync right now, and push notifications will make that feature more useful.

While Jason is relieved that cut, copy and paste and MMS have finally found their way to the iPhone, like many others, he was most impressed with the bright future for the platform.

The 3.0 software is hugely important for the iPhone platform, as it shows Apple is continuing to innovate and blur the boundaries between phone and computer. iPhone developers should be very excited, as Apple is allowing more access to the hardware and software inside the device, and is providing us with much better ways to monetize our apps over time.

Marketcircle

Alykhan Jetha (better known as AJ) is the CEO of Marketcircle, the Mac business software company. They are working to bring their Daylite productivity management solution to the iPhone with the imminent release of Daylite Touch. Marketcircle is keen on the push notification service for Daylite Touch.

I also think that cut & paste and Spotlight will make the iPhone or iPod even more productive for a lot of people. We are looking forward to see how apps like ours can participate in Spotlight as well as how the whole thing works.

Still, there were some disappointments too.

I was hoping for background processes, or even periodic background processes, but no luck with that. I think that for a lot of apps, being able to run in the background every 30 minutes (or X hours) when the user is not using the device as opposed to always running would significantly reduce the battery problem. These things wouldn’t have to run for long. For example our typical sync takes less than 20 seconds.

Double Encore

Dan Burcaw, CEO of iPhone development consultancy Double Encore, was one of the early movers in the iPhone market and led the team behind the Brightkite iPhone app. Dan was also on hand for Apple’s announcements and was still riding the Apple high after he left 1 Infinite Loop and spoke with me on the way to the airport.

This definitely keeps the ball rolling. It was going to be hard for competitors to catch the iPhone and the App Store anyways, but I think Apple said, “We need to be flexible so we can keep this snowball rolling.” Everyone I talked to, my peers, other companies, are saying, “this thing just got better in a lot of ways.” Sure, Apple addressed the specific things that people wanted to change, but this is a really solid, broad release.

Since Dan was in the briefing, I was curious about the announcement that got the most attention from those present.

<laughing> You know, the Apple people kept asking that question too. I’m not sure, but as soon as the video goes up, look for this… When the ESPN app gets a push notification, the alert sound is the ESPN jingle. Da-da-da. That was cool. iPhone 3.0 gives people new ways to extend their brand. The new business models are going to allow companies to extend their brand to the iPhone in a big way too. All these changes to the SDK will bring the big boys into the game that had been sitting on the sidelines, now that they can use their branding in a bigger, richer way.

If you haven’t thought about building an iPhone app, you might want to look into it. This thing is going to be a runaway train by the time 3.0 hits.

A Runaway Train

The strong consensus among all the developers that I spoke with is that the 3.0 announcements have renewed their confidence in the iPhone platform. With 30 million devices out there (iPhone and iPod touch) and the momentum of the app store, existing developers are probably more excited about the iPhone than ever. If I could share one insight, it would be to keep an eye on what happens with the new accessory communication options. I heard several rumblings that this opens up a whole new round of innovation for the iPhone.

While no one picked any one single software feature, API, or Core service as the Next Big Thing, everyone was thrilled with the breadth and depth of the changes to the SDK. A theme developed that these developers felt like the wide range of features announced today made a strong statement about Apple’s commitment to the future of the iPhone platform. A future that, frankly, I’m pretty excited to watch unfold as well.

We here at TheAppleBlog have posted a fair bit about Smule and their iPhone/iPod touch applications. Their apps are a bit off the wall (which seems like a winner in the App Store), but pack a lot of potential under the hood (as I indicated here). Well yesterday they proved it — in case you felt my wild guesstimates weren’t trustworthy enough — by raising $3.9M in funding.

Despite the static on the web lately about the pros and cons of the App Store, there are developers making it big, as Smule has clearly illustrated here. They built up a following of a million customers within months of launching their first application, and only continue to grow in popularity.

Blending high tech, advanced audio processes, and unique social networking concepts seems to be the secret sauce behind Smule’s success. One bold move has been making their Sonic Modem technology available to other developers to allow different applications to communicate and worth with one another. (One such developer has already jumped at the opportunity that Sonic Modem offers, with Electric Smoke, which can be lit using Sonic Lighter.)

With this new infusion of cash, Smule plans to continue bringing music in presumably unique ways to the masses (of iPhone/iPod touch users). CTO and Co-Founder, Ge Wang had this to say, “Smule has only begun to tap the creative potential of people around the world, [and] we will help people experience music as it’s never been experienced before and in turn find new ways of bringing people together.”

With many App Store offerings, “enjoyable time waster” could be the point, but that’s not always enough for some people. There were those who didn’t see the point of Twitter when it was in its infancy (myself included), yet now it is a legitimate vehicle for information dispersion, adopted by all sorts of businesses and personal users alike. But I digress. Suffice it to say, I would almost describe the concept of Zephyr as Twitter, only created with doodles rather than text.

While Ocarina left Smule fans who owned an iPod touch out in the cold (due to the requisite microphone for input), Zephyr comes along with its wispy snowflake drawings that are strictly touch-based and available for either device. The ‘ink’, you see, is actually made up of snowflakes of varying size and shape. As you draw on the screen of your device with your finger, a tune akin to wind chimes accompanies the resulting picture.

Those among you with classical music training may have detected harmonic progressions of classical music from the likes of Bach and Schumann for example. Don’t feel bad if you missed it (my ridiculously untrained ear surely would never have caught this) as it was pointed out to me by the developer — those Smule folks are pretty musical, if you hadn’t already figured that out.

Once your doodle is complete, let it take flight on the wind, to be whisked anonymously to someone else in the world (with Zephyr on their iPhone or iPod touch). Should they enjoy it, they can forward it on for someone else to see. Likewise, you can watch as Zephyr-based notes bounce around the globe before landing on your device for review. Zephyr puts the power in your hands to favorite notes that land on your touchscreen, forward them on for others to enjoy, or flag as inappropriate.

The beauty of Smule’s iPhone applications is the simplicity of interacting with them, and the whimsy they bring out in the user. Zephyr is yet another perfect embodiment of this. The snowflake graphics are crisp and the audio clear. Zephyr (App Store link) may not have a point, but its concept is an interesting one, and the experience of using it is quite enjoyable. Whether it’s worth $0.99 to you is not for me to say, but if you’ve enjoyed Smule’s other offerings, you’re likely to be satisfied with Zephyr as well.

There’s no shortage of applications from the App Store that allow iPhone users to let their inner musician come out and play. We’ve got guitars, pianos, and synthesizers galore to choose from. But an important detail to point out about these iPhone applications is that each one of us could potentially play exactly the same exact tunes because the audio produced is really only a result of preloaded sample sounds. Besides your own creativity in putting the sounds together, it’s all static. Ocarina from Smule (anyone noticed that I love what these folks are doing?) however, brings us change to this category of apps.

Ocarina makes your iPhone as true to a real instrument as it could get. It does this by allowing you to dictate the audio that’s being input, as you blow into the mic of your phone. So like a real wind-based instrument, the sound that’s produced is all up to you. The obvious difference being that Ocarina is analyzing and digitizing the audio output in real time as opposed to wind through holes in a typical instrument.

I’m no musician — I’m lucky I can play the radio — but the Ocarina is just fun to play with even if you have no clue what you’re supposed to be doing. With four ‘holes’ on the screen, you can control the notes your Ocarina plays as you blow into the mic. Smule is even kind enough to offer ‘tabs’ for playing real music! (Here’s the link to Kumbaya for instance.) If you’re not musically gifted (welcome to the club) you can go to the globe view and listen to others from around the world. (I believe there was a Jeff from Southern Cali that’s been particularly impressive.) The visuals in globe view are particularly impressive.

And for those of you who’s first thought when you heard ‘Ocarina’ was of the classic video game, Zelda, you’re on the right track. There is a ‘Zeldarian’ mode that makes your Ocarina sound dead on for the video game. I still haven’t caught someone on globe view playing the game’s music, but I’m hopeful. The only immediate feature for Ocarina that I can see as missing, is a way to record your haunting airs…

As with other Smule apps, Ocarina will cost you 99 pennies to have a real musical instrument wherever you take your iPhone. For those iPod touch-only owners who may not be thinking clearly, you have to have an iPhone for this application to work. (E.g. don’t buy this application and then leave a review that it doesn’t work for you!)

Had you noticed that Sonic Lighter (by Smule) was recently updated to be relevant to the pending presidential election? That’s right — a simple, silly, virtual lighter, now has the capability to give you first hand political polling results from around the world, for the two lead presidential candidates. Select your party preference, light up, and view the globe to see how everyone else is voting (or would vote if they were American).

The location data from Smule’s applications can be uploaded (with your permission of course) to their servers for real time processing. The results are geographical polling results or recently lit flames. This example just scratches the surface of what Smule is capable of, and I recommend keeping in mind that when ‘playing’ with one of Smule’s iPhone applications, a boatload of ingenious potential is lurking in the shadows.

To give you an idea of the horsepower behind the team at Smule, peep their about page. Go ahead, I’ll wait… These guys have more PhD’s (and PhD’s in progress) than any of the iPhone software development shops I’ve heard of (and probably more than many indie OS X development groups as well). Point being, this isn’t just another group of high school whiz kids programming in their parents’ basement to make a few extra bucks — these folks have years of schooling to back up their incredible body of work. To me, that alone is enough to pause and find out what’s going on at Smule that’s unique enough to have that kind of talent behind the wheel.

The Smule Interconnection

Chew on this idea: Smule Apps work together. They communicate with one another, so as you come in contact with another iPhone user with a Smule application, your iPhones can now interact at the application layer. This interaction has the ability to create links or networks between the iPhone users, which obviously requires a face to face meeting. (Think of it as the anti-[insert your favorite or most hated social network] for those of us who still prefer talking to people in the flesh.) Sonic Boom can even be made more powerful in groups. (Bet you didn’t know that!) Go ahead and try it with some friends — light all your Sonic Booms at once, and when they go off, your globe-view explosion will be larger in your geographic location than the solo explosions else where in the world. The explosion’s debris is even interactive, allowing you to blow into your mic and stir up the remains — and it’s all as unique as a snowflake every time you do it.

Sonic Lighter has the unique ability to light your friends’ iPhone-based Sonic Lighters on fire. Or you could use Sonic Lighter to ignite (and blow up) Sonic Boom’s firecracker. This represents Smule’s revolutionary Sonic Modem technology, which can be thought of as network over audio. Here’s the ability for different devices (or applications) to communicate with one another, free of bluetooth, infrared, or cables, but instead with nothing more than sonic tones. Coming from a professional network engineer, this concept is downright cool. Oh, and they’re making the Sonic Modem tech available to other interested developers to use in their own creations. So around the corner could be an entire market of Sonically-networked iPhone applications! While right now this capability doesn’t represent anything I’d call hugely useful, I would call the concept and potential revolutionary.

The level of thought and technology going into Smule’s iPhone applications is truly remarkable. When I got all this dirt from Smule CEO, Jeff Smith, it really opened up my eyes. I mean, who would have guessed that these silly $.99 programs in the App Store would have so much potential behind them? And you wanna know the crazy part? From what I hear, these examples from Smule are more or less proof-of-concepts for even greater feats of programming and iPhone interactivity from this incredible group. I think, if you’re not excited by these insights, and the true breadth of technology going on behind the scenes with the applications Smule is turning out, you’re just not a true nerd. Keep your eye on the big brains at Smule — I’m certain we’ll be seeing a lot more incredible innovation out of them.

New this very day, Smule releases their latest audio based iPhone application, Sonic Vox. With Sonic Vox, simply slide your finger across your iPhone and slip through a range of voices from Darth Vader to Gollum.

Perhaps it’s easiest to think of Sonic Vox as Voice Candy for your iPhone. So the most obvious question that came to mind for me was, “Can I talk to other people over my iPhone as Vader or Gollum?” Based on the current constraints of the iPhone SDK, this capability unfortunately is not allowed. But as I get into the finer points of Sonic Vox below, you’ll see that it is possible to talk in these modulated voices via iChat or Skype — using your iPhone!

The visual feedback to Sonic Vox is minimal, and reminds me of the pulsing strobe from the hood of KITT (if I must explain myself, that’s the car from Knight Rider). But the point isn’t the visual, as with all Smule apps to date (and in the future…), it’s all about the audio. When you speak into your phone with Sonic Vox running, the playback can be heard from the iPhone’s earpiece speaker. (Admittedly, this was only interesting to me for the initial testing of the application. However, if you’re my boys who are Star Wars junkies, the iPhone battery will die long before they get tired of listening to their own Darth Vader voices.) If you’re interested in greater fidelity, however — or to share with a friend — you can plug in your head phones and listen. Upping the ante a bit more, connect your iPhone to an external amplifier via the headphone jack to a line-in on say, your MacBook.

Has that light bulb gone off yet? Smule actually turns the iPhone — with the help of Sonic Vox – into a functional external microphone for your computer! There are two great benefits to this capability. On the one hand, you can play your wicked cool voices for others to hear and enjoy more easily. On the other hand, now you’re able to use your iPhone and Sonic Vox as a line-in source for the likes of Skype, or iChat. Go ahead and totally wig out your parents/children/siblings/what-have-you when you begin audio chatting as Gollum!

So really, what Sonic Vox does is cool, but somewhat limited in application. How it accomplishes this functionality, however, is what really makes Smule’s newest application a killer piece of tech. Truth be told, Sonic Vox is creating real time voice effects. To be clear on this point — it is not recording your input, altering it, and playing it back to you. Rather, as you are speaking into your iPhone’s mic, Sonic Vox is using Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in real time to alter the resulting, simultaneous output. (If you really want to geek out, look into Smule Co Founder, Dr. Ge Wang’s Chuck audio programming language project.)

Maybe it takes an audio geek (or perhaps, just a geek in general) to get psyched about the potential Smule brings to the table with Sonic Vox. But what these guys — and girl — are doing is truly awesome. Look for another Developer Profile in the coming week, all about Smule. After chatting with Co-Founder Jeff Smith yesterday, I think I’m nearly as excited about what they’re doing as they are, and I can’t wait to share more with all of you. For now it’s safe to say you haven’t seen anything yet.

If you’d like to get the first hand experience using Sonic Vox (and what is likely the future of real time audio processing on the iPhone), it’s priced at $.99 in the App Store. What have you got to lose with awesome Smule’s money back guarantee?

Smule — of Sonic Lighter fame — launched their second app over the weekend, Sonic Boom. As you can probably imagine, it turns your iPhone into a virtual firecracker that can be lit, either with your finger (as a virtual match that you actually have to strike to ignite) or a second iPhone running Sonic Lighter.

Sonic Boom, like its sister app, is more gimmicky than anything else and is hardly feature intensive. You can change the size of the firecracker or the fuse, slow down the explosion, and wrap your stick with a picture from your camera roll. You can also rummage through the debris afterward, however the graphics are nothing to phone home about and are on par with what you would expect from a 99¢ app.

Where Sonic Boom really shines is the real-time display of other users around the globe. Smule claims they have registered ~7,400 explosions in the app’s first 36 hours and during my usage, I averaged a fair number (5-7) of explosions every couple of seconds, most of them culminating around the USA and Europe.

Curiously enough, you can cause the explosion to “break” your screen. It seems to be more random than anything, but obviously the bigger your stick, the more likely your chances. You can check your stats to see how often you’ve done so, as well as how many times you have lit a firecracker in general.

All in all, if you’re looking for a way to have some momentary fun without losing fingers or something to accompany your friend’s Sonic Lighter purchase, this is it.
