The iPhone’s lack of support for Adobe’s Flash platform has been a topic of much debate ever since the smartphone’s 2007 début. However, a recently developed JavaScript work-around successfully manages to get Apple’s popular iPhone running Flash files, without the need to void your warranty by jailbreaking.

The script, which goes by the name of Gordon, was capably developed by Tobias Schneider, a programmer from Munich, Germany. Sadly the small script does not give true fully functional Flash support to the iPhone, as the software only enables Flash files to be displayed within the iPhone’s Safari browser.

However, the hapless and rather weighted shortcomings do not end there, as in order for the script to work correctly, website owners must incorporate Schneider’s code on each and every flash page they want to display correctly on the iPhone. In addition to this, preliminary tests have shown that pages running the new Gordon hack push the iPhone’s central processing unit (CPU) to it’s up-most limits.

Schneider’s freely distributed open-source project, which works thanks to a Flash runtime written in pure JavaScript, unfortunately has its limitations, despite it being admirable and in some ways a successful effort. The restraints in place will stop this nifty piece of code from receiving wide-spread adoption, so don’t expect too many Flash-enabled sites popping up on your iPhone any time soon.

If you want to see Flash in action on your iPhone now, you can. Simply get Safari open and head on over to Paul Irish’s site to give various demos of Gordon a spin. But be warned Adobe’s Flash is one resource-intensive extension which will eat at your iPhone’s battery power in no time.

The very capable, and conversion-headache-preventing (HUH?), open-source VLC player is one of the very first things I install on any new Mac, after Firefox. If you’re playing anything that isn’t a straightforward .AVI file, and especially if you want to play the notoriously tricky .MKV format, VideoLAN’s multiplatform player is an absolute necessity. Sadly, it might not be around for much longer.

VLC’s OS X incarnation is in danger, according to VideoLAN, due to a lack of developers working on the project. Right now, the total number of active devs on the OS X port of the software is exactly zero, which is threatening official support of the software beyond version 1.1.0. VLC’s current version on the Mac is 1.0.3.

The dearth of willing developers has already led to the 64-bit version of VLC being put on hold, which is really unfortunate because thanks to Snow Leopard’s improvements, such an upgrade would improve the overall performance of the media player by a fair margin. All hope is not lost, though. VideoLAN is looking for qualified volunteers to help keep VLC for Mac alive. Anyone with knowledge of C, Cocoa and Xcode who’s inclined to help out should check out VideoLAN’s official wiki to see how to get involved.

The VideoLAN Foundation mentioned that “Apple doesn’t want [them] on the Mac platform and is blocking us a lot, and refuses to explain why,” according to PC World. At least part of that stonewalling involves the Mac maker’s refusal to list the player on the software downloads section of its official web site. It probably makes it much harder to garner support from the community without the Apple bump.

I, for one, will be very sad if VLC’s Mac support ceases, but unfortunately I am not a developer. If you are, and you have time, consider lending a hand.

The inevitable iPhone update is looming ever closer in the distance, and accordingly, the iPhone rumor mill is heating up. Today, news came that frequent Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn, a Taiwanese hardware company, received an order to build the new iPhone, which still won’t arrive in consumer hands until mid-2010.

News of the iPhone order comes via Mobile Review’s editor in chief, Eldar Murtazin, who tweeted simply, “Foxconn received order for next generation iphone” early Thursday morning. Murtazin is known to have good connections in the mobile phone industry, so there’s a good chance that there’s something solid behind the report. Engadget went so far as to call him “the ultimate insider when it come to all things mobile,” which is no small praise.

It also makes sense time-wise, since Apple basically now has about six months to ramp up production enough to deal with the massive demand that usually accompanies the launch of its iPhone products. It’s also worth noting that this time around, many people who got the iPhone 3G on contract through AT&T will be at the end of their 2-year agreement, and thus fully eligible for a new hardware deal, which should help boost sales even further.

Thus far, details regarding what the next iPhone will have that the current generation doesn’t have been scarce. But that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from working overtime. Some suggest we could see a CDMA or dual-mode CDMA/GSM model, or one that supports RFID technologies. If it’s true that production on parts of the iPhone is going to begin soon, we likely won’t have to wait long to see these rumors multiply and resolve into a more definite picture of what’s to come.

As someone who isn’t particularly crazy about the official retweet implementation, I’m not so excited about that, but there’s still a “Quote Tweet” option as well, which lets you do things the old way.

There’s a lot of other new features and improvements, too, including tweet geotagging, spam reporting via the official Twitter API, What the Trend explanation of trending topics, and more. Once again, Tweetie has returned to the top of the heap, in terms of both functionality and UI.

Lists can be created, edited, managed and viewed, all from within Tweetie 2 now. That means if users post links in the “@user/list” format, you’ll be able to just click on it to view said list. Your own list management and creation features are accessible via the ellipsis (…) icon. I still have yet to create any of my own lists, but testing this out with the lists of others, it seemed to be well-implemented.

New video upload and hosting options are also available. You can now select from Posterous, Mobypicture and Vid.ly, in addition to TwitVid and yFrog. Maybe best of all among the UI changes, you can now disable automatic browser rotation, which is a feature every landscape-capable app should have, speaking as someone who often browses lying down in bed or on the couch.

Lots of other smaller changes and a long list of bug fixes are also included as part of the 2.1 update. The update is free for all Tweetie 2 users, but if you haven’t yet made the leap to the newest version, the $2.99 price tag is seeming incredibly reasonable right about now.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the original release of the Macintosh Portable — the first truly untethered Mac, thanks to its internal battery.

There’s a quote attributed to Steve Jobs: “Do not trust a computer that you cannot lift.” The original compact desktop Macs were offered with an optional carrying case, and some pioneer Mac-users did lug them around, but analogous to the tiny Mac mini today, they couldn’t be considered truly portable due to the necessity of a wall-current umbilical.

The Mac Portable development project was launched in 1986, not long before Steve Jobs’ departure from Apple, and the product was first released for sale on September 20, 1989. It was featured on the cover of the November 1989 edition of MacUser magazine, which called it “by far the most complex piece of machinery devised by sale by Apple computer.”

While it incorporated a laptop-style foldable form factor with a front-mounted carry handle/lockdown lever, the Mac Portable weighed only about a pound less than contemporaneous Mac Compact desktops — a hefty 16 pounds, due partly to it having a robust lead-acid battery. It wasn’t cheap either, selling for a likewise heavyweight $6,500 — or $7,300 with an optional hard drive.

Internally, the Mac Portable had a 16MHz Motorola 68HC000 processor chip, an internal 1.4MB 3.5-inch floppy drive, a 40MB 3.5″ hard drive, and a whopping 1MB of RAM, expandable to 9MB but unfortunately in an oddball 30ns SRAM card (one slot) module format. The monitor screen was a crisp 9.8″ 1-bit active matrix, 640×400, LCD — initially without backlighting — and there was also a video output port for driving an external monitor. The upside of that heavy lead-acid battery was a very respectable five-to-10 hour charge life.

Also included were an ADB port for a keyboard and mouse, DIN-8 serial ports for printer and modem connections, and a DB-25 SCSI connector. An internal modem was optional. An interesting trivia note is that the Portable was the first Mac to ship with a pre-formatted hard drive and a pre-installed operating system.

Apple added a backlight to the Macintosh Portable in February 1991 and also increased the standard RAM to 2MB or 4MB, changed the RAM ceiling to 8MB, and replaced the expensive SRAM chips with less-expensive pseudo-SRAM, although the pseudo-SRAM and backlighting reduced battery life.

The Mac Portable was replaced by the PowerBook models 100, 140, and 170 in October 1991 — the 100 slimmed down to five pounds — launching the modern laptop computer era with a form factor essentially the same as the one still dominant today. However, the Portable gets credit for pioneering the battery-powered Mac concept. Happy Anniversary!

One of the most compelling new feature in Snow Leopard is Grand Central Dispatch, which can make it easier for developers to write software taking advantage of the multiple cores in our computers. On Sept., 10 Apple released the user library component of Grand Central to the open source community.

We previously discussed Grand Central Dispatch, but the essence is that the operating system’s kernel is the only entity that knows all of the processes that are running on the system, so it’s in the best position to determine how to run tasks concurrently. Developers no longer have to guess as to the most efficient number of threads to spawn, or make assumptions about the available computing resources.

While Grand Central Dispatch is a boon for Snow Leopard and OS X developers, it doesn’t help the rest of the computer world, and certainly doesn’t contain enough of an advantage to convince developers who don’t already develop for OS X to start. However by open-sourcing the Grand Central Dispatch APIs, Apple is most likely hoping that other operating systems like Linux may pick up the technology. This encourages the wider adoption of the technology, which makes it stronger for all parties. It’s a win-win scenario.

One just has to look at the success of WebKit, the underlying foundation of the Safari web browser that was adopted by Google to drive its Chrome browser. Apple is clearly seeing the advantages of open source — and even if it didn’t mean to (Apple didn’t open-source WebKit as it originated from the open source kHTML), it’s reaping the benefits of the open source community’s constant code improvements.

Ultimately, Grand Central Dispatch consists of three components, each of which are now open for public consumption, improvement and adoption:

In the user-space side is the newly open-sourced libdispatch. This contains the APIs that developers call to schedule blocks of code into queues.

xnu is the kernel that runs OS X, originally developed for NEXTSTEP before Apple took NeXT and Steve Jobs back. xnu stands for “X is Not Unix” and has been open-sourced from the start because it included code from FreeBSD.

llvm is a relatively new “Low Level Virtual Machine” compiler technology that is ultimately designed to replace gcc which generally compiles much Unix software. While not technically required for Grand Central Dispatch, it supports a key requirement: blocks. Blocks are an extension to the C programming language that make it trivial to define portions of code that can easy be scheduled and run concurrently.

With all three components of Grand Central Dispatch now available for the open source community, it is an even more exciting prospect. Finally we can really capitalize on our multicore computers. The next 12 months will be interesting.

If you were to navigate to lingon.sourceforge.net or smultron.sourceforge.net today, you would see the following text on your screen:

“Hi!

First of all I’d like to thank you for your interest in my applications. But I have now come to a point where I don’t have the time to spend on the applications that they deserve so I have decided to not release any more versions for the foreseeable future.

Cheers,

Peter Borg”

Lingon is a utility to assist managing the launchd process. I covered Lingon in-depth back in February, and it has been a fantastic, easy-to-use tool for managing my custom scripts. The current version can still be downloaded from sourceforge.net/projects/lingon/. Alternatives include Apple’s commandline tool launchctl, and the $5 shareware tool launchd Editor.

Smultron is a fully featured popular text-editor and was one of the first applications I downloaded when I moved over from Windows to the OS X world in 2007. Most importantly, it’s lightweight, fast and boasts a great-looking syntax highlighter, among other tools. It, too, can still be downloaded from sourceforge.net/projects/smultron/.
Of course, there are heaps of alternative text editors for OS X, from the commercial offerings, like Textmate, SubEthaEdit and BBEdit, to the free TextWrangler.

Being open-source projects, hopefully somebody will take over maintaining these two very useful applications. In the meantime, both applications continue to work fine on both Leopard and Snow Leopard, and until they don’t, I’m happy to continue using them. So I’ll just say, thanks very much, Peter for those two great applications. Your efforts have been most appreciated.

It’s hard to deny how handy it is to plug an iPod into a Mac, fire up iTunes, and watch your device sync with your computer automagically. Take the Mac or iTunes out of the equation, though, and syncing gets a little trickier.

If you don’t like iTunes, or you use Linux as your primary operating system, it’s still possible — easy, even — to sync your iPod’s media files. Just grab one of these three free, open-source music managers, and you’ll be up and running in no time. Like most open-source software, these projects have a strong community of users who are eager to jump in and help if you run into any glitches while installing or using these apps, so don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

Banshee — One of the most robust media players around, Banshee syncs podcasts, music, video and audio files with your iPod. It also snags album artwork from MusicBrainz, lets you create smart playlists, and filters your entire library by album or artist. Banshee was designed for Linux operating systems, but also works on a Mac, so it’s perfect as an iTunes replacement.

Rhythmbox — This music management app does just about everything but sing along with your tunes. Rip CDs and organize them into playlists, manage automatically downloaded podcasts, grab lyrics and album art from the Internet, and easily transfer music to your iPod. Designed to work with the GNOME desktop, many Linux distributions come already bundled with this app, so check to see if you have it before downloading.

Amarok — This app has a load of integrated Web services that help you locate, buy and manage music from Web sites like Magnatune, a terrific place to buy tracks and support indie artists. Amarok imports your existing iTunes database, creates dynamic playlists, and supports more than 45 languages. If you need to sync a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch, then this is the app for you. Amarok was created for use with the KDE desktop, but it’s also possible to get it up and running on a Mac. There’s no official support for it yet, though.

Over at OStatic yesterday, Sam Dean pointed to a study from Juniper Research that claims shipments of smartphones with open-source operating systems will double by 2014. According to Jupiter, operating systems and available applications are among the top concerns when customers shop for smartphones, and that may give the open-source community all the leverage it needs to get a foothold on the mobile device market.

Until recently, Palm, Microsoft, Apple, and Research In Motion were the four main players in the smartphone market, each with their own proprietary OS. Each platform has its own strengths and weaknesses, and each appeals to different segments of the smartphone market.

When the first phone shipped with the open-source Android operating system, it was hard to ignore the impact a customizable OS could have on the market, since many smartphone owners like to tweak their devices for their own unique needs. Developers were intrigued, since designing third-party apps for an open-source platform is far less confining than Apple or RIM’s program requirements.

Although T-Mobile is set to launch its second Android phone this month, Android phones aren’t exactly flying off the shelves. But holding 6.3 percent of a crowded market is pretty good for a device that’s so new to the market. Application development isn’t quite as prolific as hoped, but it’s continuing to gain ground on Apple. The clunky design of T-Mobile’s G1 has been significantly streamlined in the second-generation myTouch, however, so that may help sagging sales, as will as many as 18 additional open-source smartphones expected to hit the market this year.

Juniper researchers say, “However, the real key is not whether the OS is open source but whether it’s easy for a developer to design an application and make money from that effort. The combined changes of Apple’s open route to the market and LiMo, OHA, and Symbian’s open-source OS approach have generated a tidal wave-like effect which even the economic downturn has been unable to reverse.”

That means app developers and end users may drive a sharp upturn in the sales of open-source smartphones. Developers may gravitate toward an easier application development environment, and consumers give a lot of weight to which devices have the best apps when making buying decisions.

That said, I’m not entirely convinced the Android smartphone market will grow that explosively in the next five years. While Android may have the advantage of an open-source community behind app development, the operating system itself is still relatively young, as is its application environment. Furthermore, consumers are having a tough time accepting Linux as a viable desktop option, so I don’t see it as a deciding factor in whether consumers from outside the open-source community buy an Android phone over an iPhone.

Apple has been a “recent” devotion for me. Within the last six years have I come to appreciate the quality and design that goes into the products I use daily. So why not better understand the culture and devotion behind the company? If you love your Apple product enough to sit through a documentary or two, here are a few to get you started.

MacHeads

MacHeads is a deep dive into the culture and aura surrounding Apple. Meet dedicated people, probably not too far from ourselves, as they reveal their inner devotion to everything Apple. You’ll meet some interesting, and possibly random people through this journey, but it will give you a better understanding of why so many love their Apple products. Enjoy interviews from Guy Kawasaki, and other Apple cultists. Currently the video is available for sale or rental through iTunes and Amazon.

Welcome to Macintosh

If you’re looking for a more historical approach to the world of Apple, Welcome to Macintosh covers everything from the early beginnings, to its revitalization, and now to its evolution. Featured guests also include Guy Kawasaki. In my opinion, this one feels a bit more polished then MacHeads, and offers more than just the cultists viewpoint.

Pirates of Silicon Valley

The “classic,” if there ever was a classic, regarding the history of both Apple and Microsoft would be Pirates of Silicon Valley. Not so much a documentary, but definitely worth of mentioning. You’ll at least glimpse the early beginnings of Mac vs. PC commercials.

Non-Mac Documentaries

Just in case you like documentaries or design, I recommend checking out Sketches of Frank Gehry. It’s amazing to see the thought process and inspirations that go into his greatest buildings. Also Helvetica is a really interesting look into typography and graphic design. Coming soon from the makers of Helvetica is Objectified, a documentary on industrial design. It features an interview from none other than Apple’s industrious Jonathan Ive. It’s still in its early screening phase, so sign up for announcements and future screenings.

With both shopping days and budgets running short, you may be wondering what to get your friends and family members who have either just purchased or will be receiving a new Mac.

With 1-8GB USB flash drives having a street price of ~$6-$15.00 and a plethora of highly useful free software for the Mac ripe for the picking, here is a guide to putting together a relatively inexpensive, yet most invaluable gift that will definitely keep on giving. If you have suggestions for items to include, post your ideas in the comments (it has to be free, remember!).

While TAB cannot distribute a pre-loaded DMG with these items (many have license “click throughs” before downloading and/or mounting), we can get you started building your present with this handy pre-built DMG file (ZIP), complete with custom disk image, background image and folder icons, all pre-layed out for you.

As I’ve been catching up from an illness backlog, I came across this press release from ActiveState – providers of commercially-supported versions of Perl, Python & TCL – on their decision to take their great editor Komodo Edit open source. This editor has been based on the Mozilla code base, and the open source version incorporates the same licenses as Firefox: Mozilla Public License (MPL), GNU General Public License (GPL), and GNU Lesser Public License (LGPL).

Komodo Edit has many features features found in other editors (e.g. TextMate, Xcode) such as code-completion, a code-snippets library, virtual project folders, code folding, and language recognition. Like many editors, it can also be extended via plug-ins with the additional benefit of Komodo plug-ins really being XPI extensions, the same type used in Firefox, with support for all standard Mozilla APIs based on XUL, XBL, and XPCOM. There is also support for Python and JavaScript plug-ins.

Komodo Edit works well on the Mac and is an especially enticing alternative to other editors if you work in a multi-platform shop and would like to use a common tool-set for all developers. Having the full source code available can also be a great learning tool for new developers looking to create large-scale Mac applications or for porting their applications to other platforms.

Coders looking to grab or contribute to the open source version can find out more via the Open Komodo project.

This week Slashdot (and many, many others) reported that KDE 4.0 has been released for Windows and OS X. KDE (K Desktop Environment) has been a popular GUI for *nix systems and there have been ways of getting it to run (mostly) on OS X prior to this native port if you were willing to use X11 on OS X). RangerRick (of OpenNMS “fame” did much of the heavy lifting for the Mac side of this project, including the package distributions.

To start, you’ll need to grab the torrent download – I picked the one labeled “everything,” weighing in at over 2GB. Once the download eventually finishes (it was slow for me, but I may have been a bit impatient and started mine before all the primaries were seeded), mount the KDE dmg file and double-click on the
kde.pkg
installer. It will do most of the heavy lifting and put the base packages and applications on your system. One bit of annoyance is that installer stores everything in
/opt
, so you’ll have to ⌘-Shift-G (goto folder) in the Finder and enter
/opt/kde4/bin
to get to the apps (alias this into the
/Applications
folder for faster access).

So, why would you need to run KDE? First and foremost: geek cred. OK, joking aside — and even if you’re comfortable with your current geek karma level — KDE for OS X brings a plethora of applications for you to try out. While many have not been compiled/distributed yet, that site will give you plenty of browsing fodder, and the “everything” bundle + other dmg packages deliver well over 130 pre-built OS X KDE apps. Here are some screen captures of the game Mahjongg (kmahjongg), the Konqueror browser (a cousin of Safari), Marble (a desktop mapping program) and KOffice (kchart, kword, kspread, etc…more info here) all running on my MB Pro with 10.5.2 and KDE 4. NOTE: you’ll need to install the KOffice apps via the
koffice.pkg
installer file in the dmg.

Some words of caution: KDE apps are legitimate, native OS X applications you may find the user interfaces a bit unpolished (i.e. KOffice is no iWork). Some applications were also prone to crashing and/or eating up tons of CPU cycles, so stability seems to be somewhat of an issue for this initial release. Despite these quirks, it is encouraging to see a new world of applications — and cross-platform development options — open up for the Mac.

If you’d like more detailed KDE 4 info, Ars Technia has a good technical breakdown, including a history of how this particular port came to be. Once the package and applications gains some stability I’ll review a few of the more overtly interesting/useful ones from time-to-time.

For those who do take the KDE 4 plunge, definitely drop a note in the comments with your experiences and application suggestions (Twitter users can also poke @hrbrmstr with issues, questions, etc). The more folks who do investigate KDE 4 for OS X and provide feedback, the better the developers can crank out the fixes and make this a very handy addition to the Mac world.

And then the party began.

This was my first Apple Store opening, and it was really cool. The people are fun, and I had some great conversation with the gents around me in the line this morning. Everyone’s in a great mood and the passers-by wonder what the heck is going on. Then when they find out, they wonder what’s wrong with all of us…
