Apple’s new iBooks digital textbooks initiative has seen 350,000 downloads in just three days, according to Global Equities Research (via AllThingsD), which keeps track of downloads from Apple’s store via a proprietary tracking tool. That’s a strong start for Apple’s expanded educational offerings, but the real question will be whether that can translate into long-term success.

The new iBooks interactive textbooks, which come from major educational publishers like McGraw-Hill and Pearson, among others, were unveiled last week at an Apple media event in New York City. The textbooks were the primary focus of the event, which also saw the introduction of iBooks Author, an e-book creation tool, and an iTunes U-dedicated iOS application. iBooks Author saw 90,000 downloads in the three days following its introduction, Global Equities Research said, but it didn’t share numbers for iTunes U.

That Apple would see 350,000 downloads of its iBooks textbooks immediately following their unveiling is not surprising, especially given that the store offers free samples, as well as one of its highlighted books free in its entirety. Curiosity, media interest and a desire to check out something new from Apple’s digital storefront would definitely all contribute to heightened interest.

The real test, however, will be whether or not Apple’s textbooks can keep up their momentum long-term. AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski points out that publishers are counting on higher volume sales at lower prices to make selling digital textbooks at $15 more profitable than selling paper versions at $75. But getting schools and parents to buy into a system in which books can’t be passed on from student to student, and which could potentially be paid for directly by parents themselves won’t be a simple matter. Not to mention that iPads are required to make the system work, which obviously represents a considerable expense in itself.

Over at ZDNet, James Kendrick has a good round-up of the arguments against Apple’s textbook initiative succeeding. He lists a lot of good points, but overall you get the sense that the biggest problem might just be a lot of hesitation from schools about adopting a model so different from what’s currently in place. Institutional inertia is not easily overcome, after all.

Three hundred fifty thousand digital textbooks downloaded in three days is definitely impressive, and could bode well for Apple’s textbooks initiative; people are obviously interested, and that’s a good thing. But the real test is yet to come. Download numbers following the kick-off of the school year next fall will definitely be a better time to make prognostications about the success or failure of Apple’s latest venture.

In university, I used a single clipboard/portfolio to store my notes from every class, then mostly piled the day’s work on the floor according to subject matter. Now Apple has launched a new iTunes U dedicated app, which makes keeping track of course material ridiculously easy compared to my days of academic foraging.

Most students and educators who’ve been in school in the past 10 years have probably run across Blackboard, or some similar system for managing courses online in an interactive digital environment. Generally speaking, those systems are lacking in a lot of ways: navigating them can be difficult for new users; the same content can easily be filed in multiple places, leading to confusion; they usually aren’t engaging or attractive in terms of visual design.

Apple’s iTunes U addresses all those problems. It uses a UI that mimics the real world, which some people say is the wrong approach, but should help students and education professionals who grew up using traditional tools transition to digital methods. iTunes U also organizes things organically and according to common-sense logic, which should provide a greater uniformity of experience regardless of who’s putting together the course package. Finally, like all Apple products, it invites touch and interaction. There’s actually something satisfying about tapping off tasks and assignments listed in each course package.

Course materials are also available once you subscribe from the course pack itself.

The courses in iTunes U work on a subscription model, so you’re automatically kept up-to-date as a course proceeds. The course catalog makes it easy to find what you’re looking for, with specific sections for post-secondary education, programs from outside universities and colleges, and K-12-targeted material. Like Apple’s other digital marketplaces, it also provides highlighted courses chosen by Apple’s team, as well top charts and categories.

From the perspective of someone who’s designed a course syllabus and planned a class of study, this definitely seems like a great tool for educators. You can lay out exactly the course of action students need to take, complete with videos, slides and assignments listed as items in a list, where you can access them directly. It not only makes it easier for students to follow an instructor’s thinking, but should also help instructors better plan, organize and imrpove their courses.

If there’s one major downside to the iTunes U app, it’s that it’s most definitely exclusionary; students need an iPad, iPod touch or iPhone to take full advantage. Obviously, that’s Apple’s goal: to attract more users by providing appealing software experiences, and I definitely think it’ll succeed based on what I’ve seen so far.

Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue announced a revamp of iTunes U on Thursday, designed to help teachers create full online courses instead of just creating videos or lectures. The new iTunes U will have its own app, which is similar to iBooks.

Courses will appear on a bookshelf, as in iBooks, but teachers can add much more to courses, including a syllabus, office hours, topics of classes, notes and posted assignments. Students can click through assignments to automatically view the requisite chapter in an e-book, if it’s available in the iTunes library.

Videos can be streamed or downloaded directly to the iPad for later viewing, and courses can also contain audio, video, documents like PDFs, and even apps. Students can rate courses in the iTunes U store, just like they would books or software. Combined with custom-authored e-books created in iBooks Author, this looks like the ultimate tool for the truly hands-on professor. And unlike the initial iBooks textbooks, it’s specifically aimed at higher education.

Grades K-12 aren’t left out, however. Cue also revealed iTunes U will now be available for primary and secondary educators and students, as well. The service is available in 123 countries. The iTunes U app is available today in the App Store, for free, and is designed to work on both the iPad and iPhone.

Apple’s iOS mobile platform tends to sell more paid software than its rivals, a fact that only seems to become more apparent as other gaps like the size of other platforms’ app libraries narrow. People cite a lot of different reasons for why Apple’s customers are more willing to pay, but its biggest advantage might be a head start that Google, Microsoft or any other mobile competitor can’t do much to eliminate: iTunes.

Video calling service Tango’s new paid features have experienced two million subscribers on both Android and iOS since their introduction, Tango founder and CTO Eric Setton told the New York Times on Monday. But those using Apple’s platform convert from the app’s free basic service to paid add-ons four times as often as do Android users. Setton thinks there is a very simple reason why that is, one that doesn’t have to do with app quality or platform user demographics:

It comes from years of collecting credit card numbers on iTunes. People can use their stored credit card numbers and purchase things easily. Punching in a credit card number on Android is more work.

Of course, you can add and store credit cards on the Android Market, too, but that’s an additional step on Google’s OS that isn’t required on Apple’s for most, since credit cards will already be on file, thanks to previous iTunes music or movie purchases. Also, iTunes allows multiple payment methods; you can tie it to iTunes gift cards or preapproved spending limits automatically, making it more flexible overall.

People are also slow to adopt new online payment methods, which is why it is so crucial that the App Store doesn’t require one; users simply have to continue using the same system they have already embraced for purchasing digital music online for nearly a decade. The iTunes Store has been the No. 1 music retailer since 2008, so it has had plenty of time to win the trust of a large number of users. Google, on the other hand, traditionally hasn’t asked its users to pay a dime for pretty much anything.

The good news for Google is that the barrier to entry for users new to any and all online purchasing is roughly the same for both platforms, meaning eventually users should be just as comfortable with paying on one OS vs. the other. The good news for Apple, though, is that for the time being, it remains the trusted vendor of choice for online purchases, particularly among the generation that cut its teeth on iPods and the iTunes Store.

So far, that role has led to increased consumer activity on Apple’s digital stores and devices, but Apple’s recently introduced EasyPay system indicates its effects could bleed over into real-world transactions, too. Google may have gotten Wallet out into the wild early, but trust could trump speed when it comes to long-term mobile commerce adoption.

Apple delivers a highly satisfying online shopping experience not only to desktop visitors but also to mobile customers, according to a new ForeSee study. In fact, Apple tops the list when it comes to mobile shopper satisfaction, edging out online shopping heavyweights like Amazon and eBay.

The study found that Apple’s online store achieved an average score of 85 out of a possible 100 from its 3,000 polled online mobile shoppers, beating Amazon by just one point. ForeSee’s research covered both the websites and apps of the top 40 most frequented online commerce websites in the U.S. In a linked ForeSee survey of 8,500 online shoppers at traditional websites conducted for the study, Apple scored 83 overall, tying for second with Avon behind Amazon’s score of 88.

I am actually surprised that Apple scored so highly among mobile shoppers, since the mobile site for store.apple.com actually isn’t tailored to mobile screens at all; it’s the same site people reach when they visit the store in their desktop browser. But the study covers both apps and websites, and Apple has a very impressive app for its store for iPhone devices.

The app was updated this year to provide access to Apple’s new EasyPay option for purchasing low-cost items in physical retail locations as well as in-store pickup of in-stock items and the ability to order custom Mac hardware configurations. And it definitely stands out from the crowd. Because it is Apple’s own app, users can even pay for items using their existing iTunes account, so there is no need to enter any payment or delivery information as long as you have that info on file.

Some might criticize Apple’s approach as limiting its appeal beyond a core audience of iPhone users, but the results of this ForeSee study suggest it is doing something right. Maybe that has to do with the increased tendency users have to check out apps first and the web second when on mobile.

Still, ForeSee notes that for the time being, mobile devices generally play more of a role in research than in actually pulling the trigger on a purchase. Thirty-four percent of online shoppers use mobile channels for learning more about products, but only 15 percent actually bought the product on a mobile device. That is an increase from last year, however, when just 11 percent of shoppers actually bought from their phones.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of disappointment ran through your head because you waited until the very very last minute to buy gifts. Hanukkah observers still have a few more days, but probably not enough time to get something shipped. Here’s a list of great last-minute gifts you can still buy at this late hour, and most even allow you to print an attractive card or certificate.

1. iTunes gift certificates and apps. If you have an app, TV show, or songs you’d like to share, you can quickly and easily gift them to someone right from iTunes. Generic iTunes gift certificates are available in amounts of $10 to $50 in $10 increments if you’re not sure of a person’s exact tastes.

2. Online backup. Nothing says “I love you” like the gift of preventing data loss. If someone you’re buying for hasn’t developed an onsite backup strategy, you can both give a gift and do a good deed. Both CrashPlan and Backblaze (two of my favorite online backup services) offer gift subscriptions for $50. Sure, it isn’t a very fun gift, but it’s practical, and when a recipient accidentally lose a file, they’ll hopefully remember how you helped them.

3. Audible. I’ve been an Audible fan for a very long time. Someone who has a long commute to work will appreciate the wide variety of books that they can listen to via the service. You can give an individual book (the geek on your list will love “Ready, Player One” narrated by Wil Wheaton) or give a monthly subscription that allows for multiple purchases. Three month subscriptions start at $45.

4. Pandora One. For the audiophile who loves their custom stations and playlists but winces when they hear an ad, how about a gift subscription to Pandora? No more pink cupcakes. I’d suggest Spotify, but gift subscriptions aren’t available in the U.S. yet. Coal in that company’s stocking for sure.

5. Hulu+ or Netflix. If the hard-to-shop-for person on your list loves TV or movies, a gift subscription of Hulu+ or Netflix will allow for streaming of video content to their iPad, iPhone, and desktop. Unfortunately Hulu+ doesn’t work directly on the Apple TV, so Netflix would be a better choice for users of that device. Both products have gift subscriptions that start at $7.99, and both give you a choice of attractive gift certificates to print at home.

There you have it. You didn’t procrastinate, you were simply waiting for the perfect gift, and now you have a great list. Happy holidays and next time, plan ahead!

Apple has finally made it very clear exactly which media content can be made available in the cloud in which countries for Automatic Downloads and Apple TV streaming, as well as where iTunes Match is available. A support document, newly added to Apple’s site, provides a handy resource for those thinking about investing in Apple devices who want to know more about the media ecosystem in their neck of the woods.

The support article includes a chart that lists countries alphabetically, and then shows in columns what kind of iTunes Store content is available for iTunes in the Cloud access. Content types include Music, Music Videos, TV Shows, Apps and Books. The entire range of media options is only available in four countries: Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. Many more countries offer everything except for TV shows, and Apps and Books are available in every case.

Apple also includes a chart indicating where iTunes Match is available worldwide. There are 17 countries currently on that list, including all those who got the service last Thursday after a slightly premature slip allowed a little bit of access the day before. Apple doesn’t include Brazil in the support document, however, even though that country also has access to iTunes Match.

If iCloud media access is a big part of your Apple device buying decision, or if you just want to see what’s available in your country laid out in black and white from the most authoritative source possible, Apple’s newest support doc should come in handy.

Apple’s iTunes got a small but handy feature update on Tuesday, and also an iTunes content partner has provided an early Christmas gift that’s perfect for filling any downtime you may have as a result of the holidays. First, iTunes now has a “Complete my Season Pass” feature for TV shows, and second, Sony Pictures is now offering all episodes of Pan Am free on Apple’s media marketplace.

Complete my Season Pass

Just like “Complete my Album” for the iTunes music store, Complete my Season Pass allows you to fill in the blanks of your TV collection. For individual episodes of shows you own, you’ll now have an option to buy the rest of the season at a reduced rate, minus the price you paid for any episodes you currently own. It’s a smart move for Apple, since it makes it easier for users to leverage their existing collections without incurring a penalty. Admittedly, it’s no iTunes Match for Video, but it’s still a way for iTunes customers to save a bit of cash vs buying all episodes individually.

Fly for free with ABC’s Pan Am

The ABC period drama Pan Am, which follows the lives of a group of Pan Am stewardesses and pilots in the 1960s as they travel the world was a show I never expected to like this season, but that actually became one of my favorites, thanks to a combination of Mad Men‘s style with a lighter tone. All nine aired episodes are currently free on iTunes, as Sony Pictures tries to drum up interest in the series, since it’s been shedding viewers pretty steadily week-by-week. Sony Pictures Television’s U.S. Marketing SVP, Chris Van Amburg, told the Hollywood Reporter the company expects the promotion to “generate enthusiasm for the show’s January 8th return on ABC.” Since I’m hooked, I hope he’s right.

Both of these are timely developments as we head into the holidays, which bring lots of time for TV show catch-up marathons. Pan Am alone should get you through all of Christmas day at the in-laws, and then some.

Apple's television plans were outlined in somewhat greater detail in a report by the Wall Street Journal on Sunday. All those plans might be for naught, however thanks to lackluster demand for connected TVs. But there are a few good reasons Apple could beat the odds.

Apple’s television plans were outlined in somewhat greater detail in a report by the Wall Street Journal on Sunday. All those plans might be for naught, however, according to Macworld UK, which sees lackluster demand for connected TVs as a major stumbling block. But if Apple has proven anything, it’s that what customers think they want and what will later sell in huge numbers aren’t always the same thing.

Smart TVs slow to catch on

According to YouGov, a prominent U.K.-based research firm, only one in 10 U.K. adults currently own a TV with smart features, and only 15 percent plan to buy one in the next year. A smart TV is one with Internet access, and with connected features such as apps or media delivery services. It’s understandable then, that Macworld would suggest a TV from Apple “would struggle in this tough market with such low demands for the technology,” but I think it ultimately misses the mark.

Don’t respond to demand: create it

Apple is a company that creates products that never would have made it to market if its process relied on focus groups and too much temperature-taking of the current consumer climate. The iPad is a perfect example, and one that was likewise greeted with ample skepticism prior to and immediately following its introduction. The failure of smart TVs to light a blazing fire in consumer hearts likely isn’t seen as a problem by Apple’s engineers and design team, but instead an opportunity to succeed where others have mostly failed.

A unique approach

In launching a TV, whether it’s an improved version of its set-top box or an actual television complete with built-in display, Apple will be competing with a number of seasoned veterans, including Sony, Samsung and LG, all of which already have smart TV offerings on the market and big plans down the road, and Microsoft, which is building out its Xbox and Kinect TV chops. But Apple’s approach is unique, in that it already owns and successfully manages a massive digital content distribution system. The iTunes ecosystem is thriving and with the current Apple TV, has gradually been tweaked to be more appealing in a living room setting, through additions like streaming of purchased shows.

Additions like auto-detection and resuming of iTunes content playback across devices, Siri controls, iCloud and AirPlay integration are all elements Apple alone can leverage from its mobile efforts to give it an advantage in the television space. Because of these key differences, any offering from Apple would be considerably different from what current and future smart TVs from competitors include. The demand for the latter types of devices likely has little in common with demand for the former, as a result.

Going pro

Apple likely won’t bring a new TV to market it could quietly dismiss with the “hobby” moniker as it does with the current set-top box. That Apple TV hardware is doing well, with a projected one-third take of the streaming set-top market, but as far as markets go, it’s not a huge one. If Apple wants a bigger piece of the home entertainment pie, it won’t just evolve the market; it’ll shake it up completely.

Think about the difference between the original MacBook Air and the refresh that brought the 11-inch form factor and much cheaper price tag. I think we’ll see a similar evolution take place with the Apple TV, with steps taken to ensure it goes from being a unique, fringe device for the Apple faithful to something everyone wants to take home.

Updated. Apple loves giving Starbucks customers free stuff. This week it introduced an e-book Pick of the Week to go along with the free song and app of the week programs it already has in place. Books can be redeemed through Apple iBookstore, for use with iBooks on iOS devices.

The free app program was started in August this year, and has included titles like Shazam, the music ID app, and Spy Mouse, a game from Firemint and EA. The first book for Starbucks’ Pick of the Week is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, which normally retails for $12.99 on the iBookstore. To take advantage of the deal, just pop into your local Starbucks and check near the till for cards printed with redemption codes. Update: Despite no mention of it anywhere in the official Starbucks announcement of the program, sources who’ve used the code say that it’s good for only an extended sample of the book (around 120 pages), not the whole thing.

Starbucks has also said that “TV shows and more from iTunes” will be offered in addition to music, apps and books, and the variety in my opinion makes Pick of the Week much more interesting. Plus, it could prompt more interest in the iBookstore, which I’m sure Apple would appreciate. Anyone planning on trying to pick up The Night Circus?

Updated. Apple’s executive team is undergoing some changes in the wake of Steve Jobs’ departure, and one of those changes is a promotion for Eddy Cue to Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services. Cue previously served as simple Vice President of the same department, and his rise in the ranks comes with his own dedicated bio page on the Apple website as well as a brand new group to manage: Apple’s iAd department.

Cue will also continue to oversee the iTunes Store, App Store and iBookstore, as well as iCloud. Cue’s 22-year history with Apple has a lot of highlights, including important roles in the creation of Apple’s online store, the iTunes Music Store and the iOS App Store, as well as the iLife suite. He got his start at Apple with software engineering and customer support teams, and represents somewhat of a ground-up success story. Cue was recently named No. 2 in a list of the 100 most creative people in business by Fast Company in 2010.

Most of the endeavors spearheaded by Cue have been tremendously successful, like the iTunes Store and App Store, but there have also been bumps in the road for the new SVP: MobileMe was widely criticized for connectivity and dependability problems, and the iBookstore is struggling to catch up to market leaders like Amazon. Cue will also take on iAd as part of his new duties, which had been reported to be facing serious problems earlier this year. Former iAd chief Andy Miller, who was the CEO of Quattro Wireless before Apple purchased the mobile advertising company, resigned from Apple earlier this month.

Cue will have his hands full trying to turn iAd around, but even beyond that he’s clearly going to be a key figure for Apple’s future going forward, because he has stewardship over iCloud. When Steve Jobs unveiled iCloud at this year’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference keynote speech, he made clear that Apple will focus heavily on the cloud as central to its business. It’s no surprise then that Eddy Cue’s photo on the Apple Leadership page is displayed prominently directly to the right of Tim Cook’s (edit: an eagle-eyed reader notes that Cue appears to next to Cook on the page because it’s in alphabetical order. Thanks for the spot!).

Apple's share of the online video sales market is on the rise again after a falling considerably due to new competition, a new study reveals.

Updated. Apple’s share of the online video sales market is on the rise again after a falling considerably due to new competition, an IHS iSuppli study revealed on Monday. Apple’s market share rose slightly from <del datetime="2011-08-24T15:59:57+00:00">65.9</del> 64.9 to 65.8 percent during the first half of 2011, when compared to the same period in 2010. It’s a small increase, but it reverses a negative trend and also brings the largest increase in revenue for any online video retailer.

IHS cited the “rising usage of Apple’s AirPlay system,” which allows streaming of video from Apple’s mobile devices or computers to the Apple TV, as one of the primary sources for the increased popularity of Apple’s iTunes service, and also pointed to the “growing installed base of the iPad and price promotions” as causal factors. Both are new introductions since Apple experienced a dip of 11.9 percentage points year-over-year between 2009 and 2010.

Also introduced during the recovery period was an improved Apple TV model, which is a key component for AirPlay, and which also provides easy access to Internet video on demand content through iTunes rentals. Apple recently introduced the ability to view purchased iTunes TV shows via streaming from its servers on the Apple TV, too.

Two of Apple’s strongest competitors, Microsoft’s Zune video marketplace and the Sony Playstation Store both experienced considerable drops in market share during the first half of 2011, as compared to the same period in 2010, but Walmart’s Vudu service, which recently introduced a web-based iPad streaming app to avoid Apple’s sharing revenues with the iPhone maker, gained a lot of ground, and Amazon VOD grew slightly as well.

Based on these numbers, there’s a fairly clear avenue for Apple to take for continued growth: Make sure video purchased through the iTunes Store is available to any and all of the company’s devices, and make it easy to share content from one device to another. If it can manage to secure a deal with content providers like the one that allowed iTunes in the cloud to back-up and share music across devices, that would be a good next step.

Discerning TV viewers take note: Apple just flipped a switch and turned on HD availability for many HBO television shows in the iTunes Store. (via MacRumors) Customers in the U.S. and Canada can now purchase HD episodes and seasons of many HBO series, including Eastbound & Down, Rome, Entourage (later seasons) and Big Love.

While not all shows have received the HD treatment (The Wire and Treme are still SD-only, for instance, along with older seasons of long-running shows), it’s a good start. Pricing varies, but per-episode costs for HD shows is either $2.99 or $3.99 depending on the title. Seasons are priced accordingly, so a full nine-episode season of Big Love, which is priced at $2.99 per episode, runs $26.91.

HD on the iTunes Store means 720p resolution, and the purchases are then available for playback on your computer, your iPad and over AirPlay to your Apple TV. Of course, HBO Go offers free high-definition streaming of HBO shows, so long as you have an active subscription to the network on one of its participating cable or satellite providers. But the HBO Go iOS app doesn’t support AirPlay streaming, and it requires an active connection to work.

It’s nice to see Apple’s available library of HD content expand with the addition of a number of quality titles. But at the same time, the pricing model still seems broken when measured against more affordable all-you-can-eat streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Do you plan on taking advantage of the new HBO content, or are you still holding out for a change in Apple’s approach to digital video sales?

Not one but two reports say Apple is now working on an ultrathin 15-inch Mac notebook, with one claiming that a 17-incher is also on the way. Apple has long been preparing for this, and I wouldn't be surprised if those preparations bear fruit this year.

Not one but two reports (from MacRumors and TUAW) arrived on Tuesday claiming that Apple is now working on an ultrathin 15-inch Mac notebook, with one report saying that a 17-incher is also on the way. These should be a bit more dependable than your average run-of-the-mill rumor, mainly because Apple’s whole device design trajectory says they should exist.

Apple tested the waters for an ultraslim notebook with the original MacBook Air, and at the time, it came with a lot of trade-offs. Back in early 2008, not including an optical disc drive seemed like a very bizarre move. And while the laptop’s price ($1,799) meant that it was out of range for most consumers, it still didn’t offer the muscle necessary to appeal to professionals.

But it did accomplish three important things: It put the idea of an Apple ultraportable into the minds of the notebook-buying public; it got Apple engineers to build upon the best elements from that first design, translating it into something everyone would want and many more could buy; and it kick-started Apple’s ability to negotiate for better prices on the specialized components required to make an ultrathin MacBook.

If Apple’s ultimate goal wasn’t to emulate the Air form factor across its notebook line (even if the “Pro” designation remains for 15- and 17-inch models, as TUAW says will happen), that would be a shock. Since the Air’s original introduction, optical media has become much less necessary to consumer and professional computing. And Apple’s recent decision to go with a digital-only distribution model for OS X Lion, the major update it released last week, suggests that it wants to wean users off CDs and DVDs sooner rather than later. In fact, the Mac App Store in general strongly suggests this, as did the iTunes Store before it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple had road-mapped the death of the optical drive since it figured out with the iPod that physical media is antithetical to true portability.

Apple has also shown with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that it knows thinner and lighter are of key importance to consumers when it comes to portable devices. That approach has served it well on the mobile side, so why not apply it to notebooks as well?

Based on conversations I’ve had with Mac users, the limitations that many professionals cite when explaining why they didn’t buy an Air are few: Small screen size, lack of ports, limited storage and discrete graphics are among them. If Apple can deliver those (and space freed up from removing the optical drive should help), then an ultrathin MacBook Pro is sure to be a hit. At this stage, the only barriers to 15- and 17-inch ultraportable Mac powerhouses are technical, and those are not barriers that prevent Apple from doing anything for very long.

Consider that the 128 GB SSD option, when it was first introduced in 2008, was a $700 upgrade, along with a faster processor on the second-gen MacBook Air. The 256 GB upgrade, along with a faster processor, now costs only an extra $450 for the new 11.6-inch MacBook Air; that’s double the storage for nearly half the price of just three years ago. Apple seems much better able to manage the cost of solid-state storage, due either to smart sourcing or falling flash prices in general, and that should translate to higher-capacity options in ultraportable Pros. Plus, if Apple decides to not go quite as slim as the Air, fitting a 2.5-inch drive shouldn’t be too difficult alongside SSD customization options. Such a compromise would likely allow Apple to stay within the current price range of the larger-screened MacBook Pros, if SSD prices make that otherwise difficult.

TUAW says we’ll see these new machines possibly before Christmas. Apple doesn’t usually release new Mac hardware past October in terms of its yearly cycle, but October actually could be the perfect time for an update to the Pro line. The Pro went longer than usual without an update last time around, but in 2008 it got an update in February and then again in October. This year we saw an update in February that introduced Thunderbolt and new processors, so an October update wouldn’t be unprecedented.

I think Apple is probably quite far along in the development of these machines, and it may only be that the company is waiting and watching to see how the updated MacBook Air fares to decide whether or not the market is ready for it to embrace a similar form factor across its entire lineup. If that’s the case, then I think chances are good that we’ll see a larger, Pro-level ultraportable before 2012.

Apple's iTunes Match has been accused of opening the door for piracy, but that's probably not something Apple's concerned about. Match will still make Apple money, and its other digital content marketplace, the App Store, may quickly become the primary breadwinner anyway.

Source: Asymco

When Apple announced iTunes Match, a scan-and-match service for your entire music library, not just for songs bought through iTunes itself, it seemed to many that it could open the door to even more piracy of digital music, which is already a rampant problem. At the time, I suggested Apple might be anticipating the future of digital music distribution and getting out ahead of the competition early. Apple might also be less worried about the prospect of digital music piracy now that App Store revenue looks poised to overtake money made from iTunes music sales in just a few short years.

Asymco (via Silicon Alley Insider) estimates that based on current trajectories, income based on app sales will pass income based on iTunes music sales in just three years. iTunes music only generates about twice the income of App Store sales, owing to a much higher amount of retained revenue on app sales. Users buy about 67 songs per iTunes account on average, but also about 62 iOS apps, so revenue from apps is growing at a higher rate than is revenue from iTunes music sales.

iOS is a platform designed with the future in mind, and since it’s only three years old, we’ve probably only just seen the beginning of its success so far. Digital music, by contrast, is being attacked from all sides by alternative content delivery methods, including subscription services, and even free, socially sourced options like newcomer turntable.fm. Amazon and Google are offering cloud streaming services, and iTunes Match is a way to stay one step ahead of the competition. But as users increasingly turn to services like Spotify, and those services begin to play nice with record labels, the pay-per-track and download is beginning to show its age.

Apple knows apps are key to the future of its content revenue picture, and Asymco’s analysis serves to make that clear. Apple is still king when it comes to digital music, but to stay there in the long term, it has to shake up the way it does business. With the App Store, Apple still has the smartest business model around, and the one that’s most appealing to developers and consumers alike.

When you buy a new Mac for school this year, you get a $100 gift card for use in the iTunes Store, Mac or iOS App Stores or iBookstore. It used to be a free iPod touch: technically a better value. Still, Apple's playing it right.

Apple has unveiled its Back to School promotion for 2011, and it’s . . . different from what it has been in years past. Rather than a free iPod (or a $200 discount on iPods costing more than that), as Apple has previously offered, this year, when you purchase a new Mac with education pricing, you get $100 credit for use at the Mac App Store, the iOS App Store, the iTunes Store or the iBookstore. Yay?

Looked at it purely from the perspective of monetary value, this year’s deal is definitely less of one than what Apple has offered previously. So why is Apple getting stingy with the rebates when it appears to be at its most successful?

First, it’s possible Apple doesn’t need the back to school bump anymore. Education used to be Apple’s bread and butter, but lately the Mac maker has been reaching a much broader audience, thanks to sales of iOS devices and the halo effect those are having in other segments. Apple might also just have found that it no longer needs to use Macs to move excess inventory of iPods ahead of the usual fall refresh, if they’re selling well enough on their own. Or possibly, it’s shifting all of its product update cycles, since the iPhone didn’t get a June update this year. If there’s no new iPod touch in September, Apple doesn’t have to get rid of its existing stock between now and then.

Apple is also cutting margins elsewhere, so it may need to make up for that by lowering the overall value of this year’s discount. Lion will now be distributed exclusively via the Mac App Store and will retail for only $29.99 for a copy that can be used on all computers authorized for use with your iTunes store account. Snow Leopard, by contrast, costs $29 for a single upgrade license, while a five-user family pack costs $49. Apple also separated out the apps from its iLife and iWork suites this year, making them available for cheaper as individual apps on the Mac App Store. As Apple continues to drive down the price on its software offerings, hardware margins become even more important as a source of revenue.

Finally, consider that in the past few years, Apple has gone from a computer company that also sells mobile devices to a mobile device company that also sells computers, and now potentially to a cloud company that sells hardware to leverage that ecosystem. If the hardware platform is no longer the center of Apple’s universe, it stands to reason that it would offer a promotion that doesn’t emphasize one aspect of its hardware business over another.

Personally, I’ve got plenty of iOS devices, but one thing I can always use more of is software for those gadgets. I think Apple is thinking that most of its Back to School Mac buyers will be in similar circumstances. Plus, $100 gift cards are a nice way of giving the Apple development community a little boost. What do you think? Are you on board with Apple’s latest promotion or not?
