just to let you know, if your having trouble installing quicktime 7 on SnowLeopard use the version on the Snow Leopard DvD not the retail install package which won't let you install. I forget which folder on the dvd but use a "show all files" script to show the hidden folders on the dvd & go to the optional installs & install the quicktime7 package. Worked for me.

It'd help if you were more specific: what exactly happens, or what error message, do you see? And for exactly what filetype? Be aware that the video in an AVI file can be encoded in any of numerous ways, so you may simply be lacking the proper codec to play a particular file. (E.g., if you're trying to play a DivX-encoded movie, you'll definitely need to install a DivX codec. Same may be true for other formats.) Note that when you've got a file open in QuickTime Player, Apple-I will bring up an inspector that'll give you encoding info on the file.

Absolutely unbelievable. Just bought a new MacBook Pro and got Final Cut Studio up and running. Despite having that software I often want to change aspect ratios of my work quickly and easily.

Now... where is that option in Quicktime X... hmmm.... must be somewhere. No? Surely. NO!

OK, Apple made a big mistake with that version, given I'm a TV prodfessional and now I don't consider Quicktime X professional. So I'll install Quicktime 7 and bash in my serial number. Oh... no, won't let me do that because it proudly boasts I have 'Quicktime X' installed.

UN...BE...LIEVE...ABLE!

Maybe Apple should take a leaf out of Windows book and ask its users to design the next OS!

Love Apple but the bigger and more consumer edged they go, the more rotten the decisions they seem to make.

Another Apple half a-rse production. Quicktime X should do everything quicktime pro does but it does not. Start video automatically, start and size location saved, audio track control (kill audio if you want), Applescript control. Simple is nice, graphics is nice like a sports car but you still need access to engine. I had to install quicktime 7 and then use serial to make it do what I wanted but still cannot get rid of file title bar with coloured buttons.

@Jeff: You should be able to rename it the same way you rename other files: Select the application in a Finder window (so the name is highlighted); hit the Return key; type a new name; hit the Return key again. If that's not allowed either, you are probably not logged in with admin privileges. In a Finder window, go to the Applications folder. If a struck-through pencil appears at the lower left corner of the Finder window, you're not allowed to write to this folder, meaning you can't alter filenames.
