If you get along well without it, that's because you are not transferring large folders.

I'm trying to move (ie cut and paste) a 120GB folder. It should take 1 second to move it.

The OSX system does not permit it. It only enables in this situation a copy. That takes over one hour!

@ fishrivers: You are right : the drag and drop method (especially with touch-pad) is very dangerous. Many times it happened that I dropped the file at the wrong place (i.e. somewhere in the file tree) and was in trouble to find it again. So, the idea that cut/paste is a deviation from the single click theory that could lead to errors is not convincing. Just let people use the means to achieve their job. And if you are afraid that people have fish short term memory and forget which file they are cut/pasting, just open a window with filename in the clip-board.... So easy to make people happy...

If I hear one more person telling me to drag and drop in Finder to move I'll puke! Seriously, try dragging an item across multiple directories and levels of folders. Maybe you want to change views as you navigate elsewhere or go do something else while your item stays in clipboard, or better yet you want to stop pause, VIEW the folder path of new location before you paste? It's WAY too easy to accidentally drop in wrong location completely.

I'm a mac user of 15 years and a windows 7 user of 9 months. I hated xp. Now, I HATE mac. Bottom line is that the OS should allow different users to behave as they wish to. So cut paste should be a standard feature. Whether it be default or not is another debate, but give it to us. Let's not go into the stupid single click mouse thing. I have a good friend, mac user for years, who didn't know about contextual menus until I told him ONE MONTH AGO!

For all of mac's good things... the dumb things are REALLY dumb.

As a user of a dozen of OS, I find absolutely ridiculous the absence of cut/paste files! When you pay $2000 a modern computer such a basic function should be present. People who don't want to use it for religion reasons can follow other methods!

Moving files around ON a drive, you don’t need cut, you don’t need copy.

I stumble upon that thread because I was searching to cut and paste files in snow leopard. I m using a mac for professional reasons more and more, and that's true that you can't cut and paste a file or in simple words move files from your internal to external hard drive. This is incredible, could not believe my eyes !
How do you do guys/girls when you have to save a selection of files from internal to external HD ? You never have to do this ?
And I m not speaking about the folders things... drives me mad. I have to get back to my basics with the shell, feeling very comfortable when you have to move files, replacing files on another drive :-(
To spare u searching wrong way, thought i had find something to circumvent this, it was quicksilver, since i ve upgraded to SL and QS as well, proxy objects and/or qucksilver are not working any more on these files manipulations. And... guys behind QS probably have other work to do or else, and as a matter of fact, full SL compatibility seems not for tomorrow. I have a question for people that are really working on a computer or just sometimes moved divxs between HD : any suggestions quicker and safer than the shell and terminal window?

Sometimes Apple sucks really hard.

A regular default upgrade of Snow Leopard will automatically reclaim the saved disk space for you. I got an extra 11Gb on my 13" MacBook, and 10Gb on my 20" iMac. (both were running 10.5.8)
I honestly wasn't really expecting to see the full 6Gb, so I am pleasantly surprised!
