i have a question and i hope i’m in the right place.
i just got a new macbook for christmas and trying to set up my gmail on it. i already have a gmail account on my iphone and it works fine. the problem is i have forgotten my password. it is saved on my iphone account but without it i can’t seem to get my account up on my laptop.
i am not technically inclined so i need help please.

try going to Mail preferences, under accounts click the arrow menu to the right of your outgoing mail server – SMTP – there will be the option to ‘edit server list’, select this go to Advanced and check that your password has been entered there. I spent hours with the same problem as you are having and found my password blank – now all fine,

I used to have my mail working on gmail, but now, I keep having this message each time I try getting my mails on mail: The server “smtp.gmail.com” cannot be contacted on the default ports.

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.

If you have a POP account with gmail, you cannot Send mail For that,yiu need an imap account with gmail.from apple mail .

Gmail has a limit of 20M per message (including the message and any attachments) that applies IIRC whenever a message is to be stored on or pass through Google’s servers (so if you are using IMAP you wont be able store anything bigger, if you are using googles smtp server you wont be able to send anything bigger). Obviously if you are using your own ISP for SMTP and storing mail locally (as you would with POP3) your limit will depend on your ISP.

As an aside, you probably shouldn’t be using mail for transferring files bigger than 20M anyway, that is what all those other transfer protocols are for…

Oh and “I know this post is from 2005″ I signed up for notifications so happily once every few months I get to see people are still using this post and comment thread, just show’s how permanent the web can be…
