Quicksilver Screencast: CMD ESC Trigger
In an effort to quell the weekly requests for how my CMD + ESC trigger works to load a selected item (or multiple selected items) into Quicksilver, I’ve done an impromptu screencast on the setup. Call it Bonus Wednesday.
Anyway, I’m at work, so there’s no audio, but you should be able to follow the visual cues and roll your own at home. Setting up the CMD ESC Trigger in Quicksilver.
All further screencasts will probably link to this one as well, so future readers don’t have to ask the question again. :)
EDIT: Richard points out that this is indeed a trigger that Quicksilver [now] ships with. See the screenshot below. It may just be a matter of assigning a keystroke to this trigger.

Nick, this may just be me not comprehending this, but isn’t there this exact same thing as a default trigger, under the Quicksilver section (Command Window with Selection)?
You’re probably right on that one Richard – I just know that way back when I initially set it up, it was NOT built in.
Since apparently people are having issues getting it to work, perhaps it’s not enabled by default… Not completely sure.
I’m not getting any sound on this one. Is it me, or is there problem with the upload?

Hei Nick, where did you get that nice background?
Actually like Nick I set it up like that & it works a little better than the default Command Escape. The default one won’t select text & bring it into QS (I use it all the time to select a plain text URL especially in emails, Command Escape, hit enter & it will open up the URL in Safari).
The background is from Iconfactory (look in the freebies section) – I just grabbed it myself.
FYI – if your computer came with Front Row, cmd-esc is set as the default command for invoking it. You can change that to something else (I used opt-esc), so it won’t conflict with Quicksilver.

Absolutely, I totally forgot about the Front Row collision. To remap Front Row’s CMD ESC, do this:
System Prefs
Keyboard & Mouse
Keyboard Shortcuts Tab
Scroll all the way to the bottom and either uncheck the hotkey, or remap it.
The default trigger can get text, etc. You just have to check “Pull selection from front application instead of Finder” in Preferences ⇢ Extras. And ⌘⎋ seems to work as part of the application (without assigning it to any triggers).
The problem with Quicksilver’s built-in ⌘⎋ trigger is that it wouldn’t grab multiple files in Path Finder (nor Finder if I remember correctly). The problem with using the “Command window with Selection” trigger instead is that in a web browser (or at least in OmniWeb) it would always grab the URL of the current web page, rather than the selected text.
To get it working correctly everywhere, I set a shortcut of ⌘⎋ for “Command window with Selection” and used the Scope tab to enable it only in Finder and Path Finder. (Like I said, it already works everywhere else without any trigger.)
