Nathaneal, here is how you fix that:

Right click the Activity Monitor in your dock and select options / “open at login”… Now go to system pref’s and select – Accounts / Login Items / look for activity monitor in the window on the right and check the “hide” box.

Now the dock icon will work as described and Activity Monitor will launch at startup without the large Activity Monitor window. If you need the large monitor window, simply click on the Activity Monitor dock icon and there it is…

onmy 8-core macpro i only see one bar instead of 8

I use Dashboard on my Dock with iStat Nano widget and other great widgets, like Weather, Stocks, Dictionary installed. Like you I really resist putting junk on my Dock.
