This is incredible news & I highly respect the abilities of some of those development studios in Japan. I've managed to learn quite a bit from my modest days of Hello World. It's not quite a studio level effort yet, but I'm only one person.

The iPhone and Mac use the SAME underlying operating system (OS X), and the SAME native programming language (Objective C), and the SAME development tools (Cocoa, Interface Builder, etc.). These do not exist on other platforms. Of course, you have to get a Mac to program the iPhone. Complaints about this are like complaining you have to get a Sony Playstation and a PC to program the Playstation. You can't program the Playstation on a Mac. Horses for courses - as a developer, you have to purchase the tools you need for the job. The cost of entry is miniscule compared to the cost of developing for Playstation.
