No one seems to have mentioned that this actually has to do with the hard drive cable coming loose within the iPod. Here's a quote from an article that described how to fix this porblem in a more "proper" manner:

"A quick search would reveal that a recurring problem with the 4th gen iPod is that the hard drive cable comes loose! Now a lot of people would solve this problem by hitting, smashing, or ramming their (once expensive) iPod onto the floor, input connector end first, which may knock the hard drive connector back into place. Clearly I'm not going to try and smash an iPod which is not even my own..."

I felt the same way, as the iPod was not mine either and was just given to me from my brother [to see if I could fix it]. This article gives a "cleaner" way to fix the problem by physically opening the hard drive, disconnecting the hard drive cable, then connecting it again:

Good luck!

OMG! Amazing! I have a 4G iPod, which I dropped onto a pavement, taht completely died. Not working in the slightest. Not even turning on to shos a sad face etc. I had tried everything. Resets and throwing it at the wall out of anger (probably not the best thing to do). After the wall, I thought there was no chance and it would have to be replaced. I then tried the towel smacking on desk thing as the last resort. And that actually worked (I don't even know how, but it did!) I can't believe it actually lives. Yaaaaaayy!
Thanks to everyone. [=

I couldn't believe it. You just have to be joking - drop it or hit it - a delicate computer device! But with nothing to lose I closed my eyes and whacked it delicately at first to no avail and then what I thought would be damagingly hard, expecting it to break into pieces. My trust in humankind was restored - the 60GB ancient one works again. Thanks to you all.
