Well said Ben, if you google how to turn them off (in the beta version) that will tell you how to turn them back on (in the release version).

No, we do *not* all work on enormous screens these days. My main machine is my 17″ laptop and I’m always running out of room. Just because YOU don’t fully utilize your screen space doesn’t mean that none of us do.

Dear Gazoobee, I am 70 and I love the tabs on top. Being old doesn’t make you resistant to change any more than being young makes you stupid. It’s your choice.

Thanks ChrisG – I was actually asking about v3.x.x I tend not to use beta software in case it fouls up my business-use computer like Skype’s new version did last year. I’ll wait for the release of v4.

I found this while looking for discussions on Safari tabs, and v4 looks interesting. Will it also address my other peeve (or is that already addressed but I haven’t found it?

With Firefox I can set it to reopen all tabs from the previous setting. Safari 3.2.1 doesn’t seem to have that facility – or have I missed it? There are 3-5 sites that I use consistently and it’s a pain going to the bookmarks and reloading them every new session.

I like the tabs on the top. I don’t see what the big deal is. Apple should keep ‘em there so people can at least have something to complain about.

I agree with your analysis, I’m overall positive about tabs on top.

However I am against the new throbber compared to the old progress bar.

At first, I didn’t like the Tabs on the top, so I moved them to where they were in Safari 3. Funny thing, after I did, I started to really miss them on the top! I agree that they should be a little bigger, but overall, even though Safari 4 is just a beta, I love it! It’s not perfect, but it’s a lot faster then most other browsers and even though it’s still a beta, it has become my main and primary browser. I still, from-time-to-time, use Opera 10 and FireFox out of habit, they are no longer my favorites.

I can’t wait for the final release.

I love having the tabs on top. I found it strange at first and even reverted back to the “old way”, but there was something about the “old way” that i no longer liked so i reverted back to having them on top. I have no issues with it at all.

love the tabs on top, it works and doesn’t take up space that would be devoted to the website.

My only gripes are that you can’t drag out a tab to its own window (like you could in S3) – however I’m sure this is coming. The second thing is that the reload/refresh button now mirrors the iPhone and is too small – but maybe I just haven’t got used to this yet.

My first reaction to the news was “Yuck!”
Then I actually tried it & it was’nt so bad..
but i kept asking myself why did they do this..
Then a light bulb went off in my head..

Oh! This is designed for a touch interface for iPhone & the new breed Tablet devices (when they arrive).

Suddenly it all makes sense!!

In the mean time I have left the tabs on the title bar & quickly got used to it.
Whats the big deal?

Not to nitpick, but Chrome got the idea for “tabs on top” from Opera. Actually everyone got the whole concept of “tabs” in the first place from Opera.

I haven’t seen Chrome’s implementation, but I really like the way Opera does it.

@Weldon — Glims adds that capability to Safari (along with the favicons in tabs and a slew of other things). It’s free and works well.
