For those with problems getting the converted ringtone from iTunes into your phone, make sure that you check “Sync Ringtones” in the Ringtones tab in iTunes.

There is mo option for “get info” when you right click on the desktop file.

i have the iphone 4, to change it to m4r on the info of the new song it should say it at the end of the name eg la roux; going in for the kill .m4a. change this to .m4r. then when you close it done it will say ‘are you sure you would like to change to .m4r.?’ and your done!

if anyones even still on this, ive just my second iphone, and now have the latest itunes also.im getting it all down to mr4 then when i save it back to itunes and go to sync, there now is no ‘ringtone’ section? so how do i get it as a ringtone now? please help, been at this for two days now :( x

If you do not want the hassle of syncing whenever you want to use a new song as your ringtone, you can try GeoRing. It allows you to use any song as your ringtone with just a few taps on your iPhone. Another cool feature is it can randomly pick a song from your playlist when your phone rings. You can find GeoRing in the App Store.

On newer iTunes and iPhone 4, make sure to find the AAC converted file on your hard drive, then delete it out of iTunes but keep the file. Then drag the file from finder into the ringtones folder. Then it will work.

The only way I have been able to create a ringtone on my iPhone 4 is to either purchase the ringtone or purchase a ringtone creator APP from the APP Store. The free apps haven’t worked either!
This works great with iPhone 3G, but the problem, at least every way I have tried, comes in with the Ringtone Folder in iTunes, which does not recognize the created ringtone, you can’t drag it to the folder and you can’t double click it from your desktop! I haven’t found a “FREE” solution for iPhone 4!

I have the iPhone 3S and followed each step exact, I unchecked the boxes and made sure I deleted the clip before taking it took it to my desktop and insert it Into my ringtones!! Arghhh then sync ??? Idk please help me hunnn!! I will love you long timeeee, xoxo lmao. But seriously T.T I'm dying here.

I am an Iphone4 user and I too had trouble up to the .m4a to .m4r part, but the solution is simple. Here’s how:
1. Before you start these instructions above go to “Contol Panel”,
2. click “Appearance and Personalization”,
3. click “Folder Options”,
4. click the “View” tab,
5. find “hide extentions for known file types” and uncheck this
6. finally confirm by clicking Apply.
7. Now follow Jenny Kortina’s awsome instructions (1-6).
Your ringtone should appear on your Iphone4 in your “Sound” settings file under “Custom”
Hope it works for you all.
