The drawer is one of the UI elements that looked new and clever when introduced in OSX.

The whole problem about it though, starts by ignoring its existance. When moving or resizing a window around the screen, there is no hint that if your window is too high/wide, the drawer will not have enough space to show up.

An easy way to overcome this, is to have the application window automatically resize in order to leave enough space for its drawer. This would look like a bad practice though.

Let's take a look at the benefits:

The drawer contains elements that don't need to be around all the time (if they do, then add them in the main window instead), and it has a "temporary" feeling which remind the user it can be turned off at any time.

The drawer is attached to the window. They move together and it's visible as long as the window is visible (if we don't need all that, we can use a palette window).

As I can't think of a replacement for the drawer element, my suggestion is that it should stay, but used only when needed.
It could temporarily move the application window, or squeeze it in order to fit in, and when it's gone the main window can get its previous size and position (unless it's been moved or resized in the meantime).

Please forgive me for mentioning it, but I'm an English teacher, and I get fed up with this mistake. It's so common.

The apostrophe (') means that SOMETHING IS MISSING.

I'm = I am.
He's = He is.

And it's = it is.

"to it’s parental window" = to (it is) parental window.

Its = "belonging to that thing"

It's = "IT IS."

I realize that this is not a comment on the content of the Blog. I don't mean to make you wrong, just to correct a simple mistake in an otherwise well-written article.

Yours sincerely,

John Davis

I think that the floating palette in Microsoft Word is fantastic. It can be moved around and becomes partially transparent when it's not in use. Apple has used the palette as an alternative to the drawer in iCal, and I like that I can move it around and that it disappears when I'm in another application.

I use the left drawer in PathFinder to list the running processes. I think it's nice to have that in the drawer where I don't use it much, rather than the left panel which shows the Shelf, disks and bookmarks. The right-side drawer can be used as a preview pane, but i just use column view for that and it works good.
