I think there is a segmented market for both devices, if you compare a ebook reader withe the iphone, most people would disagree it is a direct replacement-competition; the fact that you can't expend several hours reading on an iphone due to battery life & screen, an ebook reader really makes a difference here, no carrying batteries, no headaches or small reading text, and the screen for long time reading, really hurts the eyes! I am doing a Phd and read a lot of articles all day... I can tell you about that !!

I have a Kindle and the iPhone Amazon reader app. The iPhone is an OK book reading platform if you don't mind hauling around a 4400mah auxiliary battery with you. You don't hear that many complaints about the iPhone battery because most of the people writing about the iPhone get a new one every year.
