Some of you have not separated the ideas of "partition scheme / partition map" and "file system / volume format". The HDD (the whole enchilada hardware drive) can have only one partitioning scheme / map. Each partition can have whatever file system ("format"). You cannot apply two different partitioning schemes to one HDD. The partition scheme / map is at the top of the hierarchy and there is one per HDD.

The author should also mention at the beginning that GPT means "GUID partition table" and then stick to one of these terms, not switch arbitrarily as though they were different. It's like talking about G.O.P. and republicans and not explaining they are the same.

#2 Court Kizer says:

Why don’t you actually explain what GPT is? And what utility allows me to format this way?

wow. appaerently that a$$hole (Court) never heard of google, or was just too lazy to look up what GPT is. Just because this article was written for slightly more informed people, doesn't mean it wasn't worth writing. how ignorant!

Hi, Great piece...think I may try this partitioning so I can back up both intel and ppc macs on same large external drive..But reading this made me wonder about a possible related issue...I got a new intel imac and have not been able to get it to recognize an external hard drive via firewire that has a tiger OS on it that was cloned from another ppc mac...If I attach via USB, the intel imac does recognize the drive. I've asked about and haven't gotten any clear answer...Is there any difference in the ability for an intel mac to identify/mount a drive via firewire vs. usb...could it that it can mount via usb, but not firewire if it is APM not GPT formatted? Any thoughts welcome.

Hi,
I may have jerked myself around but...
If your partition or hard drive is partitioned for 4 partitions and they were originally done on a non intel based machine can disk utilities re format with the GUID scheme? I have to assume not but never hurts to ask.
Guess I should have left half the drive "free" then I likely could have had 2 schemes on the drive. I want separate boot images so I can have an external drive boot whatever Mac I need - intel and no intel machines.

Thanks folks

http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2006/08/16.1.shtml

Read this site to see where to find the missing Partition Scheme commands within Disc Utilities...they are there, you are just selecting the wrong item in the list of drives such that you are not seeing the commands you need! I was having the same issue as you and asked around and a fellow worker gave me the link above to save the day!

"...On the Intel Macs, it gives you a third choice, GUID Partition Scheme (aka GPT.)"

Uhm, is it named differently orso? On my MBP I can only see the following options:
Mac OS Extended Journaled
Mac OS Extended
Mac OS Extended Case sensitive, journaled
Mac OS Extended Case sensitive

Unix
Free Space

So, which one should I use to format a partition to GUID?

All fixed! you need to explicitly erase the partition. once done highlight the drive in disk utility and click on the info button. make sure it says "GUID_partition_scheme" on it.
