Apple’s Official iPhone 3G Unlock
While most iPhone users are aware of unofficial unlock methods, you may be surprised to discover that it’s possible to legally unlock your device, courtesy of Apple.

The above image is the not-often-seen official unlock notification, as displayed in iTunes. The dialogue succinctly confirms that the user’s iPhone, in this case a 3G, has been unlocked and can now be used on any carrier. Note the Apple logo at the top left — this is a result of an official unlock sanctioned by Apple.
Read on to find out how I legally unlocked my iPhone 3G.
In June, while over 1 million early adopters in the U.S. picked up their brand new iPhone 3GS devices, I was anxiously waiting for the official launch in my current country of residence, Finland. I picked up my iPhone 3GS in Helsinki just two weeks ago, when it was finally launched by Sonera.
Regarding Sonera, think of it as a less-repugnant version of AT&T. As the exclusive distributor of the iPhone over in Finland, Sonera has turned out to be a somewhat benevolent carrier. The carrier’s unlimited data plan is reasonably priced, and home hacking your iPhone to tether to your Macbook is positively encouraged.
And now I’ve discovered that Sonera is also happy to lend a helping hand in unlocking your old iPhone 3G. When the 3G was released last year, Sonera customers had to sign up for a two-year contract. When upgrading to the iPhone 3GS, those same customers are given the option to pay off the remainder of their original 3G contract. Paying off the contract, and thus completing the two years prematurely, entitles the customer to have their iPhone 3G unlocked.
The helpful assistant at the Sonera store made a note of my IMEI number and then passed it onto his boss — after that there’s a special piece of software that only his boss is authorized to use. This mystical application submits the IMEI to Apple, which in turn authorizes the device for unlocking.
I was advised that when the iPhone 3G was next synced with iTunes, it would be unlocked. Minutes later, back at home, I connected the iPhone 3G to iTunes and received a new carrier settings update. After downloading and installing the update, Apple’s official iPhone unlock screen appeared.
Going the legit route was a much more painless process than using a proxy SIM or the Dev Team’s unofficial unlock. Also worth noting is that, unlike some of the illicit approaches, this unlock is permanent: I’ll be able to keep updating the iPhone’s OS without losing the ability to use any carrier SIM in the device.
It was a surprisingly quick, easy and free unlock for me, although I’d be very interested to find out if any of our readers around the world have had similar success in unlocking their iPhones.

How is this free? You still have to payoff the two year contract.
The way I see it, you’re paying off a contract that you are obliged to complete. They’re letting me out of the deal early (whether or not I think it’s a good deal is irrelevant in this case – I signed up for it).
To upgrade to the 3GS, I had to pay off the rest of my two year contract, note that this amounted to a cost of €24, approximately $34.
The unlocking wasn’t a part of the contract or upgrade deal as far as I knew. Sonera offered it to me and I accepted, it was a welcome bonus as part of the upgrade process.
Yeah I agree, this worked fine for me on my 3GS. I got it unlocked. For other models of iphones you can go to

They have links to unlock your iphone within minutes
If you got your 3G when it was released in July 2008, on a 2-year contract, and you paid off your contract in June 2009, you had 13 months left to run on it.
My question therefore is if the cost to pay off the remainder of your contract was a mere €24 (for 13 months), how the hell much do you pay each month!?!?!?
Hey Tim, it was 2 euros a month – I paid around 500 euros for my iPhone 3G when I first got it, forgoing crazy high monthly fees.
That is sweet. Will have to give it a go…
Aloha! auc
OK. So the author of this article is a little slow, I love just how pretentious he is as well. So quick to bash AT&T. So lets think about these comments. Let see your Finnish carrier support 15 million of those devices and then tell me that you don’t have any bandwidth issues or call drops. Go ahead and find anyone who uses 2 GB of data transmission in a month on any other phone. Go ahead and try, you wont find that like you will with the iphone. Also the price of the data plan is because they subsidize 400 dollars off the price of the equipment. 30 multiplied by what gets you back up to 400? After you grab your calculator to do some simple math that is in month 14 until they have even made back the 400 and that doesn’t even count towards the cost of the data services that you have been using over those 14 months. As far as teathering, if AT&T were to release that onto their network at this point they would bog down the network with so much data traffic that you wouldnt be able to make a 3g call at all. So before you just start vomiting out “facts”, check your research.
AT&T gives the largest donations to the Tea Party here in the U.S. than any other single contributor.
If you think AT&T is so wonderful, you must be thrilled at all of the social services the Tea Party is now cutting from our once democratic country.
The Tea Party is waging a war on women’s rights, the poor, the working class, social security, worker’s rights to unionize, unemploying thousands of school teachers, police and fire-fighters, while backing tax cuts to the rich and an increased spending on the military budget, which is already the largest in the world.
AT&T sucks and I will never, ever, support them again as long as I live. (Verizon is just as bad – they support John Boehner as well as the Senator who is trying to make it legal to MURDER abortion doctors.)
If that’s all good in your book, well, enjoy your stay in hell.
Ryan: Are you a major stock holder in AT&T or have some emotional ties to it? So what if AT&T has more customers. This is irrelevant, then they should have setup their network accordingly.
Calling a personal PDA plan unlimited is false advertisement. You have a 5GB limit on it. How is this unlimited?
You get your facts checked.

Don’t forget the bandwidth in Finland on average is 3 times what we get in north america. There is a website that shows these statistics and it was posted on digg. Finland is 3rd in the world behind Japan and South Korea in terms of quality of mobile or wi-fi network and get average 25mbit speeds. Therefore unltd. transfer is a lot likelier at lower prices. Plus don’t forget in North America we get most expensive rates and poorest service among developped (and some 3rd world countries)…believe it or not
Its pretty easy to unlock a phone. Well with my provider anyways.
I simply just state that I’m going overseas and that I would like to use a local sim card there. Whoaala! No questions asked and they unlock it for me.
I’m still waiting for the 24-48 hours till it unlocks though.
I’m still paying for my 24 month contract, but with the ability to use other providers. =]
Did that work?
You stupid bastard!!!!!!!!!
He is talking about free unlocking, not a free phone…….grow a brain for god’s sake
My story:
I bought (paid £269) the first mobile phone with O2, had an upgrade six months later (paid £89) for the Iphone 3G, then promptly moved to Italy six months later. O2 would not allow me to ditch my contract (this only happens if you die), so I was tied in for another year, with a useless phone contract that I had to pay for at £45 per month, so the total cost of the phone has been £898 for me. The moral of this story, is to think twice before you tie yourself into a contract, because peoples circumstances do change!
On a lighter note:
I contacted O2 a month before my contract expired and asked them to unlock the phone, they sent me a text message to let me know it had been unlocked a few days later (though they say it can take 10-21 days), I then removed the O2 sim, replaced it with a new PAYG sim, connected to Itunes through my computer, waited a couple of minutes, disconnected the Iphone and then reconnected it again, then it was unlocked and I am very happy, I can now use my Iphone all over Europe without have to pay extortionate fees to receive and make calls. Hope this helps someone.
Hi Faye,
Thanks for your information. I have contacted O2 after my contract expired. I have been asked to fill a form and been told will be unlocked in 14 days.
Thank you very much.
Or you could just buy one in New Zealand, where they are factory unlocked from new :-D
Is it possible to purchase an iphon from apple store in new zealand and have it shipped to my usa address. I’m assuming that they won’t ship it to me…
so can u unlock it and use it in another network other than at&t
Hi Guys
Apple like Microsoft want the monopoly of their product that is why they are these type of techniques. If any product is bought by a customer, the choice is his/her how to use it. No manufacturer has the right to decide, how it is used. Customer may use, or through or use like a paper weight. that is his/her sole discretion. But companies like Apple & Microsoft wants to control their product even after the sales.
I don’t think this is good
The locking of the phone to a carrier has nothing to do with Apple’s wishes so this is false information. It is only at the request of the carrier that this happens. The carriers I’m sure would prefer that it was impossible to buy unlocked phones.
How do I get Apple to Unlock my phone, Im from USA Michigan…
Try jailbreaking you iphone. And unlock your fone for free..
This may sound like the “french” corner, but I’ve got a similar question. I moved from the UK to France 6 months ago, and I’m using a pay-as-you-talk Orange phone as well as my monthly contract UK Vodafone Nokia handset. My daughter in the UK has just upgraded from Iphone 3g to 3gs with O2, and is offering to sell me her old 3g, which she says she can get unlocked by O2. My question is… how do I get this 3g to work as a fully functioning iphone in france… just go to Orange and ask them? Any other thoughts? I don’t think my current france orange sim is for anything but basis phone and sms.
etst
bah. this is no help for us in the US.
Bah…
It’s no help for us in Denmark (North Europe, too). :(
No seriously…
There’s a lot of iPhone and Mac owners all around the world and I think it’s great to see some blogs about other countries than the USA. ;)
if you want a iphone just go to the apple store or carrier and tell them you just want to buy one outright and they will sell it to you (IN THE US AT LEAST)
3g 499usd 3gs 16g 599usd 3gs 32g 699usd just got of phone with an apple rep just now
Nice try, owning an I phone outright in the us you are still required to use the official carrier and Att is the one with exclucivity.
Not only that, they still make you sign a 2 year agreement. Not for a cheaper plan, but any plan even on a shared phone plan.
Not true pmheart6. If you own your iphone, when you start a line of service with at&t, all you have to say is that you own your device, and they will uncheck the box for 24mo contract. so when the exclusivity between apple and at&t is gone…tada! cancel your contract. or if you get deployed again(me), or like my mom, you move to bfe in the mountains of western va where you dont get a signal till you get to the highway, you can just cancel.
I updated my 3G to 3GS and the salesperson said that I only have to call Sonera to get the unlocking code for 3G. I made a new 12 month contract with Sonera for 3GS.
Actually in Singapore, the laws states that all phones sold must be unlocked. So purchasing an iPhone, and then terminating the contract at an additional SGD850, you can have an unlocked phone, without a contract.
hey ervin, SGD 850 for Iphone that’s totally unlocked, is good price? is it for 3G or 3G s? where did you buy it? sim lim square?
From the title, I thought there some new trick discovered, but there’s nothing special or new said here, this is old stuff known and possible since back with 2G iPhones.
For technical details how this works – and why it’s impossible to permanently unlock without Apple’s cooperation – see this link: http://www.hackint0sh.org/f203/76047.htm#post419358
Hello !
I’m french, I have an Iphone 3G contract with orange. In France, it is possible to unlock any phone (including the iphone) after 6 months of contract, legally, with Itunes. We don’t have to wait until the end of the contract to get the unlocking code.
:-)
I heard the cellphone plan sux in France. You spent lots of $ but only get so little talk time. Maybe that explains it? =D
I think you should share you IPCC file :) at least with me…
As Sophie said. Me too in Paris I unlocked my 3G officially by Apple for 100€ and I did not wait
for
the 6 months :-)
Not helpful for any one else rather than you
Well here in the states AT&T has blatantly said they are not going to unlock any iPhones. Even after your 2 year contract! So the only way to unlock your phone is by using unofficial methods! Thanks Apple for doing a deal with the devil.
I got the same cold refusal to make life easier response from ATT. I pulled all the laws and FCC tactics I could come up with, and the guy was unmovable about unlocking the phone.
He did mention one important thing:
ATT in the u.s. does have a clause in the contract, where if you state you are moving to another country, they are required to cancel your contract without fee or penalty. -Yeah, I still have to purchase another phone when I get to the Philippines, but at least I’m not paying any more money to ATT.
In Poland when you buy iPhone 3G/3GS sold by one of the cariers (Era) you have the phone unlocked already. They have done it for all phones they selling. It’s great because I can buy Greek PAYG simcard when I will be in Greece on holidays and have mobile broadband without fighting to unlock my phone :).
I did this months ago in Australia and I’m still in contract, here we just enter details in the phone company website then restore in iTunes.
hi brian, you mean to say if you enter any IMEI they would unlock it just for filling out that form? If so can you send me the service provider link? Thanks much/
Dude this method was possible only because you paid off all 2 years contract and because Sonera had this option.
So, it’s not an universal method of unlocking!
This article was fabricated only to give you some visitors!
FAIL!
This is an option in every place where they are selling iPhones without contract. I bought my iPhone 3G in Era (one of Polish official networks to carry it), but wanted it without contract, so they forwarde my IMEI to Apple and it was unlocked the first time I connected it to iTunes. It’s nothing new.
Pawel, please answer, what was the full price to buy it unlocked and without any legal contract so you are obliged to pay on monthly basis. From Era of course
Vodaphone also provides unlocking for iPhones in Australia. http://Www.vodaphone.com.au/unlock.
Well at least in Ireland it’s clear: As long as you have the exclusive deal between the carrier and Apple, it will not be possible to unlock the phone.
Apple made life really easy here in Australia. We just walk into any apple store and buy an outright and unlocked iPhone over the counter.
Any sim from our 4 carriers can be used straight away.
I would like to know if someone would be willing to puchase one for me from wherever you can get one 3GS UNLocked so that I may use it with Tmobile… I can pay a finders fee if the phone itself is not outrageous! In the states we cannot though apple, or att do it what so ever…
yes you can buy unlocked iphone in USA. I believe it will cost about $600
I live mostly in China and come home to to the US for a couple of months every year. Is there a way that I could buy a legally unlocked iphone from Australia and then use it in China and the US? What about the warranty and support? And itunes? Thanks!
buy the factory unlocked iphone from any apple store in China. FACTORY UNLOCKED iphones can update new firmwares without any problems. You can still use it with any service provider. Warranty and support will be provided by Apple, no matter which country you are at.
Hello,Jamie
I want to do the same as you. Any advise or luck?
Cecil
Was told a few days ago in a Vodafone store that if you use their simcard in an unlocked IPhone it can lock it Vodafone. Any idea if this is true ??
Maria, this is not true. I have a fully unlocked iPhone, and in Saudi Arabia I put in a SIM card from Al-Jawwal (STC) and in England I put in a SIM card from Vodafone. It happily switches between them and remains unlocked.
As far as purchasing these unlocked phones: I have AT&T as my US provider, and can easily get a data plan for any number in my plan. I’d heard that many “after market” unlocks are temporary and the phone locks again after updates. Do these Australian unlocked phones remain so after updates? I’m be in Australia soon for business.
Australian unlocked iphones are FACTORY UNLOCKED. Update will not kill the unlock, since it is provided by Apple. US ATT iphones are software hacked by 3rd party developers to be used on other carriers (ie Tmobile). Updates via Itune will lock up the iphone back to ATT use only.
I am American, using T-Mobile with my Blackberry, but want to change to Apple, since I have a Mac. If I buy an unlocked iPhone in Australia (or Indonesia, where I live half time), and use SIM cards in other countries, does anyone know if I can get on a monthly carrier (like T-Mobile or Verizon) in the US with that iPhone, or do I have to buy another US phone?
Yes, an unlocked phone can use SIM cards from anywhere in the world. You will not, however, be able to use Verizon’s network since they don’t use SIM cards.
See the reply above. As long as the phone were Factory Unlocked by Apple (sold in many different countries). You can use it anywhere in the world with different carriers. However, you’ll need the assistance of the particular carrier of your choosing to enter the settings for SMS, MMS, and internet (edge or 3g mobile internet)
If you jailbreak and use an AT&T iPhone with T-Mobile, everything will work (except for visual voicemail), but you will only get EDGE speeds from the cell connection. This is an issue with the frequencies used.
It’s easy, simple, and cheap for the consumer.
That’s why AT&T will never go for it.
I couldn’t have said it any better.
It’s simple logic here in the US.
Highest prices, shitiest service, yet no one complains (except those like me who have lived abroad).
I like this article.
So if I have an iPhone 3G with AT&T, and decide to upgrade to a 3GS, how do I unlock my iPhone 3G that is no longer in use or under contract?
at the moment, only by unauthorized means as far as I can tell.
how to unlock iphone 3G
Now who would’ve thought that Apple will make it legal to unlock their own units? Talk about joining the bandwagon…
I think this is both HELPFUL and INFORMATIVE for US people.
An iPhone costs more than what you get it for . . . and you can’t even buy one unlocked at full-price in the US – and if you hack it, it’s basically warranty/support voided (almost guaranteeing it will break) and it opens you up to malware.
Now, we know Apple’s got a route to do it. I’m not surprised they’re legally compliant to wherever their product is sold. Great, fine . . . back over to you AT&T . . . think “Take Back the Beep” people . . . it’s the laws and carriers that are broken, not the hardware manufacturers.
The free-loaders poo-pooing the article for it not being “free” are totally missing the point.
-EWPIV
PS: if you think AT&T’s the devil, you never owned a V710 from verizon, talk about a crippled phone that was capable of much more.
If you search, you’ll see that 6 months ago the iPhone cost less than $200 to make.
This is a really informative article, I didn’t even know this system existed. I’ve been under the impression that O2 in the UK didn’t offer unlocks because it was technically impossible on the iPhone, but this clearly goes against that.
Has anyone from the UK had any success with getting their iPhone unlocked from O2 using this system?
Did you get any responses from O2. I am in the same boat as you and would really like to find out if the same European legislation also applies to this little island of ours.
I believe you have to pay a fee for the unlock after certain period of your contract. Something like 6 months. Might be shorter term now. The fee is around 20 or 30 euro. I think…
TeliaSonera in Sweden states on it’s website that they will unlock iPhone after 12 months for a fee of SEK 300 (~EUR 30). Telenor does the same for SEK 350:-. (no mention what happens if there is time left on the contract).
It’s interesting to see how surprising that procedure appears to people in the US. In my country (Switzerland), mobile phones are sold without SIM-Lock in most cases. However, the iPhone is only available SIM-locked through either Swisscom or Orange (the two official carriers of the iPhone).
But it is possible, to buy the iPhone without a contract and have the network carrier remove the SIM Lock right after purchase free of charge (if you pay the full price for the phone). Although I’m a Swisscom customer (better coverage), I’m currently using an officially unlocked Orange iPhone 3GS and I have done it before with the iPhone 3G.
If you buy the phone in a shop and ask them to remove the SIM Lock, they will tell you that it will take 2-3 working days. Actually, the only thing they have to do is to transmit your phone’s IMEI to Apple. And the next time you connect your phone to iTunes (with internet connection) it will be unlocked as described above. If you don’t want to wait the 2-3 days, just call Orange customer service and *kindly* ask for the unlock. You may explain that you will go abroad the next day and that you want to use it with a local prepaid SIM card in that other country. They may ask you to email them the receipt of the purchase and the IMEI no. and if you’re lucky, your iPhone is unlocked within 15 minutes.
It’s a very simple procedure and I found it so very convenient to have an officially unlocked iPhone that I can use with whatever SIM card I want and where I don’t have to be super careful with firmware updates or the whole hassle of jailbreaking the iPhone.
IMO only an officially unlocked iPhone is a real iPhone. Everything else (locked or jailbroken) is a compromise.
It is very informative. I am in the US under an AT&T 2-year contract for my 3G iPhone. I also have a European sim card that I use when I travel in Europe and used it in my unlock Blackberry. Assuming I manage to unlock my iPhone in the US, where does the SIM card go? May seem like a stupid question but how does one open the iPhone to swap SIM cards?
Thanks
The sim card in an iphone is accessed by inserting a paper clip sized pin into the small hole next to the headphone jack, on the top of the iphone….
respects…
Hi,
Do you know if swisscomm will unlock it the way orange does..?i had bought my iphone 3g in switzerland an year back without contract for 619CHF..is it possible that they will unlock my phone now..i have all the bills and invoices with me..currently i am in india…
hi IBENI sounds very interesting – do you think this would work in switzerland as well for an iphone bought in the US and SIM locked with AT&T?
Read your post about unlocked iphones. I’m american, live in zurich, and lost my swisscom iphone. They want ~$800 for a new one.
Why did you but yours from Orange-were they cheaper? did you just call them without a contract, having bought the phone from them?
Thanks
Jailbraking the iphone lets you utilize the full potential of it. You’ll be surprised of the benefits of having it. The APP STORE is very limited (even with it’s 100k plus apps available).
Here at Brazil there is a law which forces cellphone operators to sell SIM-unlocked phones.
Since then, there is a way to unlock the iphone if you want, and it has pretty much the same steps described in this post.
im thinking of asking 02 where i am (uk)
whats the chances of them saying its not possible, even though thats now showing here as utter crap ? lol
Did you get any response from 02?
Hello Olly,
I just made my first contract with Sonera here in Lahti. The Iphone 3gs is on its way, it’s said to take four weeks, two weeks more for me at this point. I wonder if it will work for me too. Mind that I did not previously have a contract at Sonera! For now I have the 1,99€ a month contract for one year as I have no idea about my “calling behavior” at all. So if I pay the phone and the remaining 1,99 times 12 I should be fixed, right? As I travel on a regular bases it would totally benefit me!
I am in the US. Technologically ignorant (I’ve no idea what unlocking refers to). After two+ years of hating my Treo Palm 700p now considering either Palm Pre or IPhone 3GS. I am utterly confused by everything I’ve read and know only that I *might* save money by “tethering”. To make matters yet more interesting I live in a place that gets interrupted signals from every possible carrier (verizon being the “best” available). I’m drowning.. any help would be piteously appreciated. =0(
Hi Kathryn:
A solution to your need may be found with Global Mobile 1. Check out my website at http://www.kinginc1.globalmobile1.com
I just bought a unlocked iPhone 3G from http://www.key-electronics.net .It`s a great website and they will ship the item imediatly.
Andrew
is this website trusted how to verify it
or just scams people
is iphone 3gs unlocked officially
Andrew you are posting a scam website
this web is fake like your mother
Hi Andrew,
Did you have any problem buying from key-electronics, someone in this forum said its a fake website.
Very interesting.
I have a daughter with a 2G iPhone who will be moving to France soon. She will be staying for a year and we have been discussing the options. I know ATT here will not unlock the phone, but perhaps Orange in France will?
Any ideas, experiences, comments?
I was in France in September with a US, AT&T locked iphone 3G, out of contract. Both Orange and Boyages refused to unlock the phone because it was not originally under their contract. Their argument is that, yes they do unlock iphones after 6 months, but only their own, not from some other carrier.
Can confirm that Vodacom SouthAfrica sells unlocked phones by default – I got a 32GB 3GS 2 weeks ago as an upgrade to my contract, but the price is still high: about ZAR 4500 (about 570$) as a contract update and ZAR 10’000 (1400 US$) without contract.
My friend will try to buy one now here: http://www.key-electronics.net
Anyone experienced with them?
John
be careful from
http://www.key-electronics.net
its faaaaaaaake
Hi,
I’ve been wondering about using key-electronics.net, and I just saw your post about their iPhones being fake — is that correct? If so, how can you tell that they’re fake? They seem like a really legitimate company, with a California address and a phone number with a Los Angeles area code, and their site seems legitimate. Plus, their iPhone prices are fairly high, unlike most counterfeit iPhone dealers. But I’d really like to know for sure if their iPhones are authentic or not — is there a surefire way to tell?
Hey Mohd,
I saw your post about key-electronics been fake, did you have any problem buying with them.
If it’s too good to be true it’s fake.
Everything there is half off.
Fake in my book.
At best, these are stolen devices, at worst you’ll never see your money or the device again.
A friend of mine mistakenly bought something from one of these places. After a couple of weeks of not getting anything, he sends an email (they don’t answer the phone) asking for the thing. They tell him that due to some issues, they would ship it only if he orders another product…. Hope you can see where this is going.
Thats not true my iphone 3g 16gb allways gets that message when i update or restore i bought it legaly unlocked! so thats just a copy of that!
Isn’t it still cheaper to buy it on contract and then unlock it?
In the US, big telecom companies lobby to ensure that no law will ever be passed mandating carrier independency. Lobbyists are, in effect, “special interest groups” that are often funded by a single corporation. They funnel cash toward re-election efforts and pay travel expenses for “meetings” in exotic locations where lawmakers can relax while contemplating their vote on a particular issue. The system is disgusting and facilitates what amounts to legalized bribery.
Lawmakers here have long been legally bribed to ensure unwanted competition is held at bay. Not unique to the telecommunications industry.
Don’t look for that to change anytime soon, either.
I agree Open Secrets. It is so disgusting I am seriously considering to move out of my own country and live somewhere far, far away… I hate to say it, but I think we Americans are the most complacent people on Earth. They can serve us shit-sandwiches and tell us it’s in our own interest to eat it up, and we in turn ask for a happy meal too. Wake up America!
Lets say, for the sake of the argument, that one can justify locking an iphone to a particular network ( AT&T, a/k/a the Devil in our case) for the duration of the contract. The ‘cost’ of the phone is subsidized, okay. But once the contract is up, one SHOULD be able to request by LAW from that carrier to unlock one’s iphone, so that it can be used with another carrier of choice. The cost of the ‘iphone’ has been well overpaid by a costly monthly service plan for the duration of 2 years.
The reason why so many more advanced European nations don’t have locked iphones is because it is prevented by their telecommunication laws (or government) – so if Apple or any other carrier wants to sell their iphones there – they must be unlocked. Period.
It is very, very sad to see nobody do anything about changing the exclusivity laws here in the States. They treat us like sheep. Go to most European countries you will find hundreds of phones to pick from in any local privately owned mobile phone store. Here in the US, you can get only what they give you. Not to mention that in Europe you don’t pay for mobile incoming calls. Only the party that actually makes a call pays for the call. Here, both the caller and the called person will pay for the same call. Double dipping….. Disgusting… and socially acceptable judging by our complacency…

It looks as though we are on the same boat. Bye Bye Amerika.
That is exactly why I am a linguistics major in University. As soon as I get my BA, I am moving to Europe in search of a TESOL job at an University in either Spain, Italy, or Germany.
What did you put into the email you sent to apple ? Could you post a template ? Who did you direct this email to ?
In Brazil the Law does not permit carries to lock the Phones. The only way they can lock the phone if the phone is free, after the contract is over they need to unlock, no question ask!!!
That is nice, because you have real freedom with carries, because now we can change carries and keep the same number!!!
I have ATT here in the US, and I have a Iphone and my wife has a Blackberry. I call att and I ask to unlock my wife’s BB. They did it, for free. I told them that we are going to travel inside of Brazil and they did not cover all the areas in the country, and I want to used her phone with a local carrier. They did her phone, but when I ask to do my Iphone, they told me sorry cannot do it!!!
Locked phones are totally UNAmerican. The consumer should have that right to choose any carrier. If the carriers act independently it should create a competitive market. In turn provide the best service at a reasonable cost. If so, then a certain company should have no problem attracting or retaining customers.
Americans are free to choose any carrier they like, but they will have to give up on the iphone, it’s called opportunity cost:)
90% of what this country does in Un-Amerikan.
Guess we’re not the “Amerika” that everyone thinks that we are.
I bought a iphone from the 02 shop in uk,i paid £350 this is on pay as you go,so would apple or 02 unlock this for free?
I mean there’s no contract
O2 are saying that Apple have not provided unlock codes… clearly rubbish.
Looks like the phone will go in the draw until they do – not paying £10 per month for data – won’t make any calls.
Loose – loose – what a bunch of idiots
i cheacked the iphone shops out first vodaphone o2 and the others apple stores in uk will sell the iphone to you for for 449 pounds and you get free internet for a year on o2 but they will unlock it for you but you lose the free internet if you change for o2 by unblocking you iphone o2 does same deal buy your iphone for same price 449 and same if you change to another carrier you lose free internet deal thats free for a year and to unblock your iphone o2 charge 15 pounds hope thats helped a few people best to take free calls and texts deal payg for 15 pounds good luck to you all hope i have been of some help to you .
The simplest solution: http://softunlock.com
It works and it’s free.
If you are in the UK with O2 and think there position is stupid/comic/sad/untenable then please add your name to the petition:
http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/O2UKiphone
So this might sound dumb, but can I just buy an iphone from a different country while I’m there. Then take it back to the US and use it?
See my reply above. Att requires a 2 year contract on all new activations. Even if you buy out your contract, and are an added phone on a shared plan.
Yes, but you are not under any obligation to use AT&T with an officially unlocked iphone. You can use T-Mobile, the only other US carrier that uses SIM cards, and they will not sink you with a $30/month mandatory data plan. Also, if you already are an AT&T customer with a number, you can just insert the SIM card and it will work. Although there is still a risk they could slap you with the $30/mo data plan if they catch you, because the phone is unlocked, then you can switch to another carrier (i.e. T-Mobile). That’s called freedom!
While this method is doable, I’m sure you have to jump through fire blazing hoops and loops in order to get it done. Apple won’t do it often because it breaches their contract with ATT. I’m sure it’s a case-by-case scenario. I’m sure it’s tuff to get them to do it.
You posted a new comment instead of replying. Check there…
Also, is
It Att’s choice? Is an unlocked phone truely unlocked? I know Att will unlock your phone if traveling to another country. Is this temporary, or country specific?
AT&T will NOT unlock an iphone when traveling. I tried, they said NO, although they did unlock another phone for my trip.
anyone who lives in the UK here? can anyone tell me how much is the prepaid iphone 3gs phone kit in th UK?
£440.00 & £540.00 16/32gb uk
ahm,,is that already unlocked? if not,,can that be unlocked by apple?so that i can use it here with just any normal simcard?
If you buy your iPhone in New Zealand, the phone is absolutely 100% unlocked and will work with a SIM for any carrier that supports the iPhone radio frequencies.
I’ve tested it with a Vodafone NZ (The only Apple sanctioned carrier over here) and also with Telecom NZ and also 2Degrees. They all work perfectly though if you’re using an unsanctioned carrier, you’ll need to create a custom carrier bundle, or find one someone else already has or configure the network MMS/APN settings manually.
In Hong Kong all phones are sold unlocked including iPhones by law.
I can happily and legally use my iPhone on any network
I bought my 32Mb iPhone 3GS at Dubai airport. When I checked the box, I saw it actually came from Hong Kong :-)
Yes, it is fully unlocked, by Apple, and has been updated OFFICIALLY from 3.1 to 3.1.1 to 3.1.2 using iTunes, each time without any problem.
I live in Saudi Arabia, and I have successfully used the iPhone with a SIM from STC (even though Mobily is the official iPhone carrier). I have also used it with a Vodafone SIM from the UK.
No problems, love the phone.
Same in India. All phones are required to be unlocked by law.
Funny how America, the land of the free, isn’t all that free, no?
Hey DEATHTAP, iPhones in India are being sold locked by Vodafone India and Airtel. I’m not sure if it is really required by law that phones sold in India must be unlocked.
gosh,i wish there are unlocked iphones in the uk,
> has been unlocked and can now be used on any carrier
*ANY* carrier?
False.
Only those carriers that use the same radio frequences as your phone.
In the USA… that’s only *ONE* additional carrier.
T-Mobile.
(Almost as bad at AT&T)
Not true. You can use Cellular One. It is not the best coverage in rural areas but in cities it is great. If you can get an independent dealer of their service in your area they will sell you a unlocked iPhone.
Hi. I agree with Sophie
I just bought a new 3Gs which is locked to the France Orange network. The people in the office said they would unlock it immediately for 72€ or if I waited for 6 months I could get it done free.
Mind you the contracts over in France are a rip off with very little choice.
Can I get it unlock if I had purchased it at India ?
Spoke with bloody O2 just now and they said that they can unlock the iphone at all and I will need to speak with Apple about this directly! What a bull sh*t!!!
Hello. I will be in France next month and would like to use my ATT iphone there. Will Orange Fr unlock it for me so I can use their PAYG service? I’m willing to pay to have it unlocked.
Probably not I tried that in Germany and they wouldn’t do it even though my contract was over. I had to get in touch with Orange in Switzerland to start the unlocking process. This was confirmed by Apple too.
Very simple process. Call your provider once your contract expires and the rest is described above.
Not 100% sure but I think I can pay CHF 100 and even get my 3Gs unlocked. However no need at present.
in the US its easy to get an unlocked iPhone, buy a phone and open a contract then pay the cancelation fee, the phone costs $375, $200 for a 16GB 3GS at a new contract price and $175 to cancel your contract with ATT then unlock the phone yourself with one of the many programs people have developed to do it, that are free.
Are you on t-mobile’s network now? If so, how is that working for you?
Beware, AT&T Customer Service enforces the requirement in their service agreement that requires you to return the equipment. They will almost always do this if you try to cancel before 30 days (presumably to get your activation fee back). And they will often do it at their discretion even after the 30 day period. Never tell them you just want to keep the phone because they will slap you with a bill for full retail on the phone and the $175 early termination fee. If you don’t believe this, just check out the fact that they are selling reconditioned iPhones and ask yourself where are they getting all these reconditioned iPhones?
In Canada Bell has just started to sell iphones. They only sell locked devices with 3 year contracts. BUT accept bringing unlocked iphones into their network…seemingly without a contract, but a min. 45$CAD/month plan. Anyone know where I can buy a new unlocked 3GS 32gb for cheap, so that I can travel with it using different countries prepaid SIM cards ?
This isn’t true. I went to a Bell dealer last week and the guy told me I can activate my iphone without a dataplan if I wish to do so. I wasn’t able to get the phone transferred though as the unlock didn’t seem to work. Every time we would put the SIM card in it would ask to connect to itunes and then it would give an error saying there’s something wrong with the phone.
I have tried talking to various people at Fido but to now avail. I paid the full price for my iPhone 3GS. I was given some bull about it being illegal in Canada to unlock phones which is a complete lie. It is against their policy to do so but they could technically do it too. I don’t understand why they are still sold unlocked if you are buying it outright when they are no longer exclusive to Rogers/Fido.
I’m going to continue to call Fido asking to speak to different people at different levels. I don’t want to jailbreak and I’m even willing to pay a fee and stay on Fido. I just want to have the option to use other sims while travelling without a jailbreak.

diziizle, look at my post above. I tried exactly that and they flatly refused.
I’m the guy on Fido looking for an unlock. I’d suggest people send feedback feedback to your carriers and to the CRTC. I was called by someone in the customer relations department of the executive office of the president of fido. The person I talked so said that if enough customers sent requests to them requesting an official unlock service, they would be able to present a proposal to the executive to offer the service again.
Since the arrival of Orange, o2 now offers unlocking of iPhones.. see http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/unlockmyiphone.html
I just have an unlocked iphone 3GS in US ($599). Can I use any pay as you go in ATT for data plan only? please advise. as I would like to make sure before I buy the program.
Also I still find my unlocked phone with carrier – ATT. does it mater? I do not have any sim in it except the default one. Thus, please advise if I can just buy pay as you go to use it? I was told my local store this program is only for 2G? very suprise. so I am kindly asking you expertise:-)
I just finished reading all of these posts…it’s a bit spinny. I’m just wanting to know the following — CAN I PURCHASE AN UN-LOCKED IPHONE FOR USE IN THE US AS WELL AS AUSTRALIA AND EUROPE? I wan to be able to use my at&t chip (no contractual obligations) while in the US, my Votaphone chip while in Australia and the same with Europe…
Can this be done and if so…how?
An honest response is GREATLY appreciated.
Yes. Buy an officially unlocked iPhone from a country that sells them. I got my 32Gb iPhone 3GS in Dubai Airport, but they actually got their supply from Hong Kong, where it is illegal to lock phones.
hi everyone
I just finished reading and yes it hapened with me too when i connected my iphone to the itunes then pressed restore after a while it said congratulation, your iphone has been unlocked as the picture above and it was easy and free unlock for me too.
Here is my lesson learned in my”unlocked” iphone 3GS… bought in USA, said unlocked from apple store- actually NOT unlocked… as I tried T-mobile sim, and it does not work!
I talked to ATT store if I could use pay as you go sim for 3GS….NO… only for 2G iPhone…. (i did not confirm this because I do not want to pay without using )… so at this time of writing… unlocked iPhone 3GS is not real to me when using other non-att sim, and no pay as you go program sim can apply.
Any new way to be real “unlocked”? please advise, as I already pay $599 plus tax for that… any legal way to unlock it is also welcome, too:-)
In short, NO. If you bought it in the US it is locked to AT&T. Unless the laws change, they will never unlock it. Unless you are willing to “software unlock it” and void your warranty, you are better off returning it. Software unlocking is “legal”, the phone is yours, but it is not officially sanctioned by Apple and most important, it is not permanent: every time you update the OS to the latest version using itunes it will be relocked again.
If I software unlock a US locked iphone, it will lock again when I update. So, wouldn’t it be possible to just software unlock again? That way I can keep getting updates and then unlock, update again and then unlock and so on. Would this be possible? Thanks.
hi am from ghana and need an iphone 3g to buy i need the cost and shiping if you pay for the shipping then it cool and if the price is more than $199 i will welcome a used one
In New Zealand, all iPhones are unlocked. I bought one from the Vodafone store, but don’t use a Vodafone sim. Kiwis won’t tollerate the big brother antics of Apple. If you want to sell us phone, sell the phones as we want them.

Apple should start selling unlocked iphones worldwide. I have heard that officially unlocked iphone 3gs will be sold in india this december or january 2010
I got an iPhone unlocked the way described above. I got this from t-mobile germany. Now I was wondering if when I now move to the states, can I get a dataplan with any carrier or just with AT&T?
You may get a data plan with T-Mobile who at the moment has one of the best national plans in the USA. Sprint & Verizon are CDMA networks and the iPhone will not work on these networks. I have heard that there are CDMA/GSM iPhones in other countries, but I don’t know how true that is. That would be even better to have in the states. it opens the door for more choices.
Can you provide me details how you did this and the tele # for them. I have service with T-Mobile in the USA and they don’t have or claim they don’t know how to unlock the iPhone the way described here. I have unlocked my iPhone with the “Make it Rain” way, but it concerns me considering I travel a lot and if I turn off the phone or if battery runs low, it will have to be jail broken again.
Anyone knowing how to do this process described above and has the proper information please send me an email to tamijones@mac.com People don’t respond with what you think, only respond with what you know that will accomplish this task.
Many thanks in advance.
You can unlock your phone with blackra1n and snow.
Switched when ATT wanted me to sign a 2 year agreement when I tried to reactivate my phone.
I started with upgrading iTunes, and all software including up to 3.1.2 and the current baseband (as required by blackra1n).
I would always double check the jailbreak/unlock sites before upgrading. Sometimes new software closes holes in old software removing the jailbreak/unlock. So you need to make sure the software has been modified to work with the upgrade.
NOTE, I had official service via ATT. I removed and reinstalled iTunes due to a problem I had, and it tried to reauthorize the phone. It determined I didn’t have a valid sim. — if this happens borrow a sim when you first sync the phone, and it will work again.
If you have t-mobile in another country they as with other carriers may unlock it. I don’t know how that would affect the US. There is an exclucivity agreement here.
Here is the skinny. Last Night I call T-Mobile Germany from the States. I have a 2 yr contract (that I have more than fulfilled) with ATT and am still with them. I fibbed and told T-Mobile I was moving to Germany and was hoping to unlock the iphone to use there. They looked up the SS # of my phone and responded that ATT would have to authorize the unlock before any company could unlock it. No matter what country you are in. It is based on your serial number. It will show it was bought in USA or another country. So we are SOL in the states to have the proper way of unlocking the iphone through Apple and the ATT.
Regarding Black Rain “make it rain”. I have unlocked my iphone with this program. The problem is when you power off the iphone or the battery runs out, you will have to re-unlock it each time and risk bricking the phone. I travel and turn my phone off to conserve battery so that solution is out. This is why I am looking to unlock through a foreign country so I can use it without having to worry that I will brick my $600 iPhone to use it with another carrier. I wish we could all ban together and file a civil suit against Apple and ATT. If we pay for a product we should be able to do as we please with it. Especially after we have fulfilled our obligation to our 2 yrs contract.
A new jail break for the 3GS is coming out by PWNAGE (I think that is how it is how to spell). This is a much better way of Jail breaking the iPhone.
We should all mail our phones back to apple and buy a Blackberry an tell them we won’t use their iPhone till we have a choice where to use it. Why are we so obsessed with this damn phone?
PeteDeno, it’s because it’s honestly the best phone on the market for consumers that want to stay connected to the internet. But I agree with you about the class action suit. I can’t help but be disgusted by the type of logic that leads people like “ryan” to think that AT&T is being at all fair. Let me break it down for you: $127.00 total per month times 24 months = $3,048.00 x 6.4 million customers = $19.5 billion dollars over two years (figures based on an average two year contract). And I think AT&T owns enough wire to create a 3G data network that will handle the extra noise from me sitting at the coffee shop tethered into my iPhone. So don’t tell me that we’re not getting screwed, I pay a quarter of what I pay for rent for my phone. The trouble is, I need my phone, because having a phone that keeps you plugged in is increasingly the only way to make any money when you’re on your own, as many of us are right now, and as we all are in the long run. So yeah, I think the class action suit is a good idea. We can start with the fact that the phone companies pass taxes that they should be paying on to consumers, and end with the fact that AT&T in particular is charging us twice for a single service (their 3G network) and promising “unlimited” data usage while in reality restricting our data usage by not allowing things like tethering.
In case it hasn’t been clear from my rant, we’re SNAFU (situation normal, all f’ed up) in the US because of corporate elitism, and some good old-fashioned market competition would really help to bring AT&T’s prices down.
The unlocked iphones on sale here in the uk are too expensive. I am going to the states in a few months. Can I buy an unlocked iphone there, bring it home and insert my O2 contract sim into it. Will there be any repercussions from O2?
They do not sell unlocked iPhones in the US period. If any American is claiming to sell some on ebay, they are either lying and trying to sell you a jailbroken and software unlocked phone or will charge you the same as you would pay elsewhere for an unlocked phone originally purchased in HK or some other country which sells unlocked phones.
I think I will check with my local apple store if it is ok to buy a phone from Hong kong or Dubai and then add my O2 sim card. Thanks for the comments
It is nothing to do with your local apple Store! You CAN buy from Hong Kong (or hong Kong stock form Dubai) and you CAN put your O2 card in it, and it will work. I use a SIM from STC in Saudi in mine. In the UK I use my Vodafone SIM. I have also tested my wifes O2 SIM, and my daughters T-Mobile SIM, and both worked.
Andy, how much did your phone cost from Dubai
4995 DHS, which currently is about £828 or $1,359.
(The exchange rate was better when I bought it, but only about 12%.)
hey….my bro going to the US this weekend..
i hope to get iphone 3gs or 3g from US….
i wud like it to be UNLOCKED….
can i get one and if yes then at what price…
its ok if apple is not officially selling them…
coz warranty wont matter anyways..
:)
Since some people were calculating how much ATT makes on our contracts I figured I’d post this…
http://www.iphonehacks.com/2009/06/iphone-3gs-costs-172-46-to-make.html
As of July 2008, the phones cost ATT street price, but does not pay monthly fees to apple. Which is Hundreds more than the actual cost.
8GB iPhone 3G costs $299,
16GB iPhone 3G S $399, and
32GB iPhone 3G S costs $599
i have factory unlock phone and its work great and its update by itunes no problem at all
i got my iphone 3g from the airport in Rome, Italy (nearly missed my flight that day) .. and its worked normally in Palestine and has worked in the UK , Australia, and around the middle east…so if you want an officialy unlocked iphone… get it from italy …
salam
What was the price of the iPhone that you purchased in Rome? Where did you buy it? Was there a contract required?
Thanks.
Tim
nose pero esto lo he visto en http://www.mac-ination.net , nose porque tanta novedad.
there are trusted sites who sell unlocked Iphones but it is very expensive… I rather but it with a network and pay a liltle amount to unlock it later…
My bro got me a new Iphone 3gS from US. He got it without a contract and paid full price ( retail ). I understand that it cannot be (permanentely) unlocked by unofficial softwares. Can I get it officially unlocked with Apple as mentioned earlier ?
@pavan
bhai how much did ur bro get it for….and from where…please reply soon..
my bro going in couple of weeks….so planning to get it from there…
its available anywhere in US(Retail )such as Best buy….
Ask him to get one OUT OFCONTRACT…it may cost him anywhere about 600$.
So anyone knows can it be unlocked officially by apple ?
hi all, merry cirstmas every one, my brother going to the US this weekend..he wanted to buy a unlocked Iphone for me, .
can he get one, if gets then what is the price….. and also plz let me know the address and current price….I hope the price will be fall down because of festive season…
For the thousandth time, no. They do not sell unlocked phones in the US. Hong Kong and apparently the Rome airport has them.
Hi Ranjith,
To be honest, the iPhone is quite a complex device, so I would recommend you do not get one as you appear to be far too stupid to own one.
Your inability to read the messages in this thread, your absolute stupidity in not being able to understand that officially unlocked iPhones are not available in the USA, means you really are far too ignorant to be able to own and operate an iPhone.
Stick to a basic Nokia. It’s more suited to your IQ.
Hope this has helped you make a good choice of phone.
i’ve just phoned o2 in the uk and asked the question about unlocking and the lady directed me to their website http://www.shop.o2.co.uk/update/unlockmyiphone.html where you can pop in your details and 14 days later your phone is unlocked… result hey?
Guys,
here is the U.S. problem summarized:
1. AT&T is the only authorized carrier of an Iphone. They will NOT unlock the phone, period the end, ever! They have some sort of agreement with Apple that prevents them from doing it, even after the 2-year contract has run out.
2. Apple (in the U.S.) claim total ignorance. They are most unhelpful, claiming it is an AT&T problem.
3. Somehow, folks have been able to get their hands on unlock iphones and are selling them on Ebay. If you are fortunate enough to get one, any carrier that supports sim card type phones will support the Iphone. I just got off the phone with T-mobile (in the U.S.) and they say they have already set up internet capability so users can take full advantage of their UNLOCKED iphone.
What folks do not understand on both sides of this issue (AT&T and Apple) is that when I sign a 2-year service contract, I am obligated to use it. The point I am trying to make is that AT&T lose no money by unlocking the iphone, I still have to pay for the 2-year contract!
Now, lets discuss why would I even want to unlock the phone. The only reason would be if I were traveling internationally and wanted to use another country’s mobile service provider sim card to take advantage of local rates while I was abroad. Apple and AT&T (in the U.S.) would experience minimal losses of revenue as the overwhelming majority of their iphone users are not international travelers.
Soon to be another cell phone option letting you chose which system you want to be on (GMS [AT&T] or CDMA) without a contract with any unlocked phone using a SIM card
Spot on Wade!
I have a new iPhone 3Gs, into my 3rd year with AT7T, I accepted a job in Ukraine that will basically keep me in Ukraine for several years. I called AT&T as well as Apple to get my phone unlocked (January 2, 2010). Not gonna happen, both claim it can’t and won’t be done. A shame, however I had not looked into the IMEI number. Blackrain does NOT work, BTW on this phone, the default to restore on iTunes prevents this, most annoying. I just want to use my phone in Ukraine, it appears for now it will just be an expensive ipod…
can I unlock a phone that is still under contract????????????? what can at&t do if I stop using their sim ???? will I have to pay for the rest of the period??? im leaving the usa so what can at&t do????
You are clearly too stupid to read this thread, therefore you really are too stupid to own an iPhone. I suggest you just sell it to someone with a brain-cell or two more than you, and stick to using a simple Nokia.
OR…. please read this thread before posting inane, ridiculous questions that have been answered many times before.
In case you do learn to read in the near future, and this is your starting point:
NO, and AT&T iPHONE CANNOT BE OFFICIALLY UNLOCKED.
I hope if one of your friends is able to read this to you it has been of some help.
Why your going of so bad on this question, perhaps your the one who has some fried-brains of holding a Nokia to long at your ears in the past? Or your telling me you only had a mobile phone since the Iphone became on the market? Talking about being dumb! Get of this board you brainless potato!
Yep…O2 UK are unlocking for free (pay monthly customers) iPhones purchased through them, Carphonewarehouse and Apple store. PAYG customers must wait 12 months and pay £15 to unlock.
My first iPhone 3GS, O2 took 7 days to unlock. 7 days and counting for my second iPhone 3GS to be unlocked! :O(
I used the O2 site to unlock my son’s iPhone 3G. It took 9 days, but this was over the Christmas period. Now he has an officially unlocked phone. Cool!
I filled out the form to unlock my iphone and it will be 14 days tomorrow when they said it will take up to 14 days … wondering whether to chase them up because you said yours only took 7 days.
Do you think you could help me unlock my US iPhone if I give you the IMEI and you input it into the o2 website form. I would do it myself but you need a active connection with them, which I unfortunatly don’t have.
Does anyone know if Apple has made a iPhone yet for the CDMA network? If they have, is it cross platformed for both CDMA & GSM and what country?
Pete, don’t you read the news in the newspaper, on TV or the regular tech news sites like CNET? Do you know who to use google? The answer is “NO”. There are no CDMA iPhones.
No Jag-off I don’t read or write I am just flipping illiterate. Why don’t you take a moment and Google CDMA iPhones and see what you get. I have found claims that there are CDMA in Europe. I am just trying to confirm it. If not Verizon by Q3 will have a smaller version of the iPhone in CDMA/GSM according to my readings. Maybe you should lear how to read the news. Duuuuh!
There are some of you people on here that take things a little to freaking serious. Get a freaking life. There is more to life that an iPhone.
Oh and Happy New Year to all ! :)
Peter, my reply might have come across a little terse but that was not necessary. There have been various “rumours” on web for several years now which may be causing your some confusion. None of the rumours have come true in 2008 (when the 3G was launched) or in 2009 (when the 3GS was launched).
You might have been led astray by misinformed bloggers. Bloggers spreading rumours are “not” journalists and it does not constitute news. Some people get confused when they hear that the standard UTMS in Europe and FOMA in Japan use W-CDMA as an air interface and iPhones in those countries run on those standards. UTMS and FOMA are just other names for 3G GSM technologies that are also used in North America by GSM carriers under the name HSPA. W-CDMA is “NOT” the same thing as CDMA2000 which is used by Verizon and Sprint in the US and Bell and Telus (prior to their launch of an HSPA+ network).
You might also have been confused when you heard that Bell and Telus have the iPhone 3GS now in Canada but those CDMA carriers now have two nation-wide networks. One network is similar to Verizon and Sprint as it uses the CDMA2000 standard (no sims) while the new network uses HSPA+ at speeds of up to 21Mbps and is compatible with the iPhone and roaming GSM phones from European visitors to Canada.
Happy New Year to you too Peter.
PS. Go onto wikipedia and type in things like “iPhone”, “CDMA”, “UTMS”, “HSPA” if you need to verify what I just told you. Google has a much higher noise to signal ratio.
I have just unlocked my iPhone like you said. The only difference is that I had to put a SIM of another carrier then plug in the Iphone and after that, open iTunes. Then Apple automatically unlocked it and the same screen appeared. Just so you know, I’m from Brazil, and the carrier that sold and unlocked my phone is TIM. iPhone is extremely expensive here, but all carriers are obligated, by law, to unlock cellphones.
I used to work for AT&T customer service. Yes, you CAN buy an iPhone without contract now. It’s expensive (a couple hundred more dollars), but you can do it. As to whether or not the phone can be used on other carriers, I’m not entirely sure; only people who have tried it will know, I guess.
Roger, are you sure? I would use it on ATT, as thats who im on, but dont want the contract that comes with the iphone – i want to use my PAYG sim …
Yes, I’m very sure. Like I said, I worked for AT&T last summer, when the new iPhone came out.

Go there and look at the No Commitment option. For 3GS: $599 (16 GB) and $699 (32 GB). For 3G: $499 (8 GB) and $549 (16 GB, but these are probably gone by now, as they stopped making them).
Olly have you been tempted jailbreak your officially unlocked iPhone? I have one too and am wondering if I do jailbreak my 3gs to get extra software and games will it render my unlock useless? Will i be able to upgrade via iTunes officially? Anyone?
Cheers
Does anyone know of a way to unlock the very lastest iphone 3gs with the latest bootroom version? If i turn my iphone off and back on again it says to plug into itunes then only lets me restore back to factory settings..
Does anyone know of a permanant unlock for the very latest iphone 3gs on orange..??
I also unlocked my iPhone by plugging it into my Mac and let Apple HQ do the rest. It was painless and satisfying. I got the iPhone for my birthday on the exact date of the first post to this thread and proceeded to unlock it a couple of days later when the authorized Apple dealer in the country I live in could not explain why it would not work, and it was brand new. I love my iPhone.
how do i unlock iphone 3gs 32gb with 3.1.2 on it with apple like the above picture? do i need an official sim like at&t to do that? ill e leaving the us soon and would be needing a hone or the road but since i saw this maybe itll be a good thing.
I have an US iPhone 3GS bought from Apple and of course on the AT&T network. My son has indicated he can unlock or jailbreak” my phone. I have a few questions:
1. Does “jailbreaking” fully unlock the iPhone?
2. O2 in the UK has sim card only packages, Has anyone done this and then used a sim card from O2 in the UK?
3. Other then voiding my warranty, will I encounter any problems swapping the US sim card whne I travel back to the states?
Cheers!
John,
I have an un-official MiddleEast iPhone 3GS (I think it’s French judging by the start-up) I initially used Blackra1n (www.blackra1n.com) to jailbreak the phone which will both unlock for any network plus allow you to use applications for tweaking and personalising your phone. Yes, this will void your warranty but any time you want to you can plug the phone into iTunes and restore it to factory settings.
As I now recieve the “official unlock” in iTunes I have removed the jailbreak and the phone is working perfectly.
Hope this helps
O2 UK will unlock any iPhone on request, something I only discovered after buying a new 3GS from Tesco.

i am in the situation where i will be moving abroad, but just started my iphone ATT contract 3 months ago. i have no problem paying off my contract (a whopping $160 early termination fee, let’s not forget), but even if i do that, i will NOT get my phone officially unlocked from ATT.
their best offer was that i might be able to bypass the early termination fee, if i sent them proof of my move.
that would still leave me in germany with an unusable iphone (let’s just say i don’t feel comfortable voiding my warranty and being susceptible to malware) and $300 lighter in the pocket.
i spent about 3 hours on the phone with about 10 different people at ATT. their policy is NOT to EVER unlock the iphone, it doesn’t matter if you pay off the contract, stay with them for 10 years or anything. it just isn’t done.
i also contacted apple. that was a huge waste of time. they also refused to unlock it, stating ATT would have to do it for me, though they had never heard of it actually being done.
so, my question is: does anyone know how to start a class-action lawsuit and whether this would have any chance of success? i am being serious!
we all moan and cry about big bad companies walking all over us, and then do NOTHING about it.
i am sure that nothing in my service agreement with ATT mentions the inability to use MY PROPERTY elsewhere in the world, if they do not provide service there!
oh, here is the grandiose ATT answer to frustrated customers all over:

I’m down for it.
I also unlocked my iPhone by plugging it into my Mac thats why Yes, I’m very sure to say…unlocking iphone is very important task which can be officially or unofficially. there is choice for to how to unlock iphone (http://www.unlock-iphones.org) either by going to officially or unofficially….
Dear All i am from India and have recently got myself a locked iphone 3 GS (32 GB) model with the impression that the official carriers in India i.e. Airtel and Vodafone will have some plan up their sleeve but when i contacted both the carriers that no such option for the 3 GS was in the pipeline till the next year. would be grateful if anyone could provide me the email id of apple and apple india wherein i can request them to unlock my phone so that i can atleast use it with some other carrier, i tried checking the email id in the websites but was not able to pin down correct personnel from apple to whom i can write and request for online unlock. Kindly send ur suggestions/comments to prem vijay@yahoo.com as i hardly use this section. ( AS I OFFICIALLY DONT HAVE AN IPHONE) :) thanking all in advance for the sugestion/response
Hi,
Tried emailing you from yr link….unsuccessfully.
Did you have any luck yet getting throught to anyone who may be able to sort out how to “legally” unlock our phones? (Indian purchased ones)
Keith
My 3GS was bought in the Middle East, not an official release but when I connect to iTunes I also get the “Officialy Unlocked” message! Will this unlock still work after firmware updates?
I see that 3.1.3 is here but I don’t want to upgrade if I’m ging to lose my carrier!
I’m still confused about which iPhone to buy. I know the iPhone 3GS is the latest version, but I don’t see much diffrence between the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.
Thanks everyone.
Differences:
iphone 3G camera is 2 Megapixels. iPhone 3GS camera has 3 megapixels, Autofocus, Tap to focus,
Video recording (VGA up to 30 fps with audio)
iPhone 3GS has voice control, a compass, a faster CPU and graphics with OpenGL ES 2.0 support and models with more storage.
3GS also has 100meg more Free RAM while 3G only has 30 to 10meg. When the 3G is near 10meg Free RAM your phone stutters and APPS CRASH
I hope this helps me out!
Folks, I too would love an official U.S. unlock. Until then, PWNAGE tool for MAC and Sn0wbreeze for PC is the best solution. The software will allow you to create custom firmware that will NOT update the baseband which will also unlock your iPhone. The only frustrating part is waiting until the DEV teams upgrade their software to work with the newest firmware.
hello i just want to say that in half a year since apple has already released the iphone 4g OFFICIALLY i will e getting it in indonesia unlocked cuz unless you buy from telkomsel you get it unlocked
hi friends…. can u please tell me the price of unlocked iphone 3gS 32gb in usa. withOUT contract……. pls
The iphone 3gs is simply super. it is very stylish. it is lost for many years.

To “Prem/Vijay”, post of Jan 30. I too bought my 3G in India (Vodaphone), but no longer live there. Tried sending you an email asking if you had any luck with your enquiry? Postmaster rejected it saying “no such account” at Yahoo. Can you let me know if you’ve tracked down anyone in India who can assist us to get our phones unlocked…legally? I (regretably now have OS3.1.3 which I gather can’t be unlocked as of now?)
how do you unlock an iphone eg at home? in the uk? 3 carriers here now support it, so theres no reasonw hy apple couldnt just send you a link to unlock your iphone at home without wandering into the shop?
Locked? Your iPhones are locked? What’s the point of having a phone that you can’t use in other countries?
Was pleased to insert a local SIM into my iPhone in Sri Lanka last week (Singapore carriers sell unlocked phones, as they should be)- worked fine, though I did burn through ~$10 of data charges, surfing over 4 days. Still a small fraction of how much the data roaming costs would have been had I used my Singapore SIM. Couldn’t figure out a way to switch off data on the iPhone when I didn’t need it, while still keeping the phone active, of course.
Hi
I have recently purchased a used 3G iphone 8GB. today I tried to update the software through I tunes it get locked. It is showing a message in itunes that ” the sim card inserted in this phone does not appear to be supported”
Please help me in this regard
Does this free unlock work in the UK with O2 but signal in my area is terrible need to switch to Vodafone
Here in Australia you can get unlocked iphones at the apple store when payed for outright and when on a 24 month contract it is unlocked but you can get it unlocked by the phone provider and it the law for them to unlock it and all our provider’s sell them and i have herd that a 64 gb iphone is comming in june or july around the world and i was told by a cell phone shop
I have unlocked my iphone 3G from Vodafone India Mumbai officially…..:) and i am enjoying MTNL 3G on it now
Hi Prasad, Can u kind reply the procedure u followed. Did u call any helpline or visit any Vodafone store. Any details would be appreciated.
I bought a 3GS on O2 PAYG, and I’ve been using it jailbroken+carrier unlocked on Vodafone. I’m on 3.1.3, thanks to PwnageTool.
I finally got around to applying to O2 for my legit unlock – and I got my “you’ll be unlocked next time you connect to iTunes” SMS from O2 yesterday. It tells me to put the other carrier’s SIM in and connect to iTunes, and I’ll be unlocked by Apple’s servers.
Has anyone else done this succesfully from a jailbroken phone? Mine hasn’t unlocked.
I uninstalled the Ultrasn0w unlock first to get myself as close to standard as possible, rebooted, checked I couldn’t attach to Vodafone any longer, and plugged in. I got nothing more than the normal sync happening. I tried switching SIMs back and forth, and once I got a “validating iPhone” message from iTunes when I had the o2, but still no unlock.
So for the moment I’ve gone back to Ultrasn0w. Next time there’s an OS update (3.2, I guess) I’ll try it again – and shout at O2 if it doesn’t work!
I have a 3GS purchased from SFR more than 6 months ago. Therefore I asked for the official unlock from the carrier. They told me in 5 days I will receive an e-mail with instructions and an SMS to inform me when I will be able to sync in i-Tunes and get my iphone officially unlocked.
As you are saying it did not work on a jailbroken iphone I am wondering if I should restore to factory settings before syncing to unlock. But if I will restore it will be on 3.1.3 and the new baseband 5.12.01. Then in case official unlock does not work I am stuck with an iphone which cannot be jailbroken again. Please let me know if you see a solution to this.
Yes, restoring to standard is my plan. I hope someone else who has been in the same situation will post to say it works…
There’s no reason it should not work, since the restore process (or the upgrade process to a new firmware version) completely clears the iPhone and all traces of the jailbreak/unlock.
But just now, I see the risk that I will end up with an O2-only iPhone temporarily is too high. O2′s customer service is okay, but if there’s a problem with the unlock they’ll need to work with Apple and that could leave me without unlock for a couple of weeks.
I just unlocked my iphone through my carriers website. Takes 14 days.

Hi Steve,
I was wondering what would happen if I put in the IMEI of a US iPhone in the form. The only problem is that you have to have an o2 account with an o2 number. Do you think you would be able to help me out and unlock my iPhones? I will give you the IMEI numbers and if you can enter them in, and get the unlock code and email it to me, it would be great.
Thanks in advance,
NK
i want to unlock my iphone in the us at&t my contract is almost over.
I would rather buy a Nokia phone than Iphone. Nokia is much better.
Stoyan,
This is a blog about Official iPhone unlocking. absolutely nobody here cares about your opinion on Nokia vs iPhone. You statement, as well as being pointless, is also unsubstantiated, unqualified, and has no quantative information, and is therefore just SPAM! If you want to make pointless comments, please visit one of the millions of sites designed for pre-school kids, where some of the less intelligent children might just be at your level.
By the way everyone, a couple of points you might actually find useful:
– My iPhone 3G with O2 contract was happily unlocked by O2 (UK) at my request, for free. It has since been upgraded to 3.1.3 and remains happily unlocked.
– My iPhone 3GS, officially unlocked stock from Dub airport, was jailbroken at 3.1.2 and remained happily OFFICIALLY unlocked. I did the upgrade to 3.1.3 and as you might expect, the jailbreak disappeared, but the phone remains happily unlocked. (The jailbreak was just an experiment, so not bothered it no longer works).
@stoyan, good 4 u however u can just get a 3.1.2v iphone note: I SITLL NEED HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

So my question is can I buy service with O2 in the US and just pay the two year contract, get the phone unlocked and use it in the US with my sim? From looking at their service this would be cheaper than buying the unlocked phone via the Hong Kong Apple store http://store.apple.com/hk/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone.
I have sent them an email to see if O2 will ship me the phone.
I got iphone 3gs from my brother from Uk which was locked. I made arestore on it and now it is sitting at the this sim is not valid screen. He called up the orange guys with my IMEI number who said it would be unlocked and i dont need a sim for it through itunes but nothing is happening. itunes just says this sim is not valid. Darn it. what now. here no one even has a orange sim to activate the phone. Am i stuck when apple has been told to unlock my phone without original Orange sim??
I’m currently in france for 2 weeks and would like to buy a pre-pay i phone , bring it back to ireland and Unlock it with my apple mac,

Man, I cannot believe this. I found a really simple to solution… at least it works for me and my situation. Here’s the story. Last year I bought 2 iPhone 3G’s from Telkomsel Indonesia. I was assured that both were “factory unlocked”, although Indonesians are prone to give you the answer they think you want to hear. Anyway, I didn’t care much until my wife went back home to the UK and had real problems when she tried to change SIM’s. That’s another story, but suffice to say it made me question what I had been told.
Anyway, I just moved to Malaysia and got a SIM from MAXIS. It didn’t work. Crap! They confirmed that my iPhone was locked to Telkomsel and was useless anywhere else. My wife called a Telkomsel engineer she knows, and he told her that the iPhone would be unlock if you upgraded the software. I was VERY skeptical since I already had upgraded to 3.1.3 and still had the problem. Anyway, I fired up iTunes with the MAXIS SIM and it wouldn’t even recognise that I had a phone attached. So I took the SIM out and reconnected to iTunes. So far so good, iTunes saw the phone. I then reinserted the MAXIS SIM, and blow me if the phone didn’t immediately start working!!! I’ve no idea if this is specific to Indonesian phones or what, but my two bricks are now working iPhones again.
The easiest way to unlock or jailbreak ANY iPhone is with this program called http://softunlock.com
It works and it’s free.
Bobby, you may or may not be linked with “softunlock” but all I got was a series of dumb questions and asked to give my cell number, which they use as a revenue gathering sham under the giuse of “marketing”.
I certainly didn’t get a downloaded solution! Perhaps you can check and let me know what I’m doing wrong?
i got an iphone 3gs as a gift last christmas. bought in LA, used in philippines, i had to jailbreak it, and do some tinkering to get features working.,. but.,but.,but., I CAN’T MAKE A SINGLE CALL!
i can send and receive messages, i can receive calls but can’t make one., what the hell is wrong.,??
Shan,
I have an officially unlocked phone, updated to 3.1.3. It works with any SIM card in any country. HOWEVER, I have aproblem with the phone similar to you; I cannot make calls, but only if 3G is enabled. As soon as I turn 3G off, it all works fine. With 3G on again, I can make data connections, send and receive txt’s, and receive calls, but I cannot make them. Apparently this is a known bug, with no currently known cure!
Anyhow, try it. Turn off 3G and see if you can make calls.

I am trying to sell an Apple Iphone 3gS 16gb bought in Dubai and in box brand new. Has apple model no. on it. Says it is unlocked and can be used with any carrier’s SIM card. People are asking me what carrier, is it authentic, etc. and if unlocked can it be used with any carrier?
I need to know what you guys think. Whoever buys this, how can they use it with any carrier if it is unlocked. I know our carrier said they cannot use this phone which is verizon so we are selling it. I’ve heard you can but don’t know how to switch it with any carrier on the phone?
Please enlighten me.
Hi Pbel, i guess it was not an official unlock. Meaning if you update your iPhone the unlock doesn’t work any longer so its locked again. Last year i used http://appledatabase.com and they unlock my iPhone via IMEI meaning that when i connected to itunes it says activate because your IMEI is into the Apple Database.
Good luck!
No my new Apple iphone from Dubai-we just called Verizon and they said they did not support the iphone and we could not get it turned on. Nobody gave them any numbers, etc. anything. So question is how do you get a carrier other than AT&T to an apple phone on? I dont understand because I know people are doing this. Plus on the instructions in the box, it says all you need is to put your Sim card in it. So we are selling it because we feel we cannot use it because a carrier will not let you switch it over. Anybody understand my question?
You can not unlock the iPhone for Verizon its impossible. If you want to unlock the iPhone for other carrier those guys are right that site does officially unlock your iPhone
Take care!
Hi PBEL,
Sorry, but you are talking complete rubbish.
If you have an unlocked iPhone form Dubai (like I do) all you need to do is put a working SIM card in it from ANYWHERE in the world, and the phone will work. Verizon do not have to ‘turn it on’. You have to turn it on – the power button is at the top. Try it. When it is on, assuming you have put the SIM card in it and connected the phone once to iTunes, then the phone will just work. In this scenario is does not how how NOT to work!
Now, Verizon may not sell you a data plan for the iPhone – but that is different. However, if you buy mobile broadband plan for another device, once you insert that SIM card into your iPhone, Verizon shouldn’t know the difference!
I use my phone with SIM cards from Vodafone UK, AlJawwal Saudi Arabia, and Etialat Dubai and Batelco Bahrain. I also used it with a Verizon prepaid SIM in the USA. My iPhone just works!
Andy.
OMG IT WORKS OMG OMG!! *DAVE* YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!
GEEZZZZ ITS WORKING oh MY GOD this is like my B-Day!
http://appledatabase.com IS AWESOME I LOVE THIS GUYS!!
Andy-thank you so much and bear with me please.
I apologize for being so ignorant, but I guess I need AppleIphone 101 for dummies so see if I have this right?
1. Buy a mobile broadband plan for another device (?please explain) and insert that SIM card into the phone
2. Connect with iTunes
Then everything on the phone is functional and working? All I have ever done is have my carrier switch service to another phone, SO HOW DOES THE SERVICE GET SWITCHED for one person’s phone to this phone if you do not call them?
Again, forgive my ignnorance but need to understand!
So are you saying when you put a SIM card in it, you do not have to have a carrier at all?
OK-After reading your response again, I think I may have it right.
If you have a SIM card from an existing phone, just put the thing in and it works and you don’t have to do anything else at all? Everything on the phone is functional?
@Andy verizon uses CDMA which does not use sim cards. As they transition to 4g they will be moving towards gsm which does use sim cards.
Not sure how the transition will go since they don’t typically use sims. I wonder if they will ask manufactures to make sim-less devices. They already have there devices customized from what the manufacturer generally offers. Typically fairly restrictive to protect there #1 network.
But they stated they will transition to be an open carrier , and now have to as a part of the deal to get spectrum for there 4g
is verizon already offering 4g and thus using aim cards? Am I to assume there 4g gsm is backward compatable with traditional gsm voice,2&3g? The current Iphone models can’t do 4g
Even if they do offer it, you would have to roam most of the time since there 4g is new, in limited markets, and has limited coverage in those markets.
In conclusion , if you unlock your phone in the us, you are pretty much limited to tmobil as you alternate to AT&T. Even then, you are limited to 2g since apple does not support the spectrum tmo uses for there 3g
PBEL, Pmheart,
Ah, I see. I did not realise that Verizon does not use SIM cards. So… it may be me talking rubbish, and not you ;-)
PBEL, yes, if you use a carrier that uses ‘normal’ GSM-type SIM cards, then you just take it out of the phone you have, and put it in the iPhone.
Pmheart6 – are you sure Verizon do not use SIM cards? They offer services such as “Data Plan for Feature, 3G Multimedia or 3G Smartphones”. I thought these kind of phones needed SIM cards? They also offer “Mobile Broadband” for USB devices etc., and again I thought these needed SIM cards?
Andy.
PBEL, Pmheart6,
Yup, I realise I am the one talking rubbish. As Pmheart6 says, Verizon (& Sprint) use CDMA and therefore no SIM cards, and therefore no iPhone.
If you have an unlocked iPhone, you will need to use AT&T or T-Mobile. Then what I said in my first post applies :-)
Andy.
That’s ok- boy after an Ebay 101 and Paypal 101 crash course and a International crashcourse on Iphones, THEN I found out it was a China imitation Model A1221 and you cannot find much info on it except one web page that says it is a fake. Ebay would not let me sell it for what it truly was because they said it was a trademark violation! The only thing left to do with this chinese version now is try somebody’s active Sim card or take your suggestion of buying a broadmobile device that takes a SIMcard and seeing what the phone does, but then Itunes and then seeing if any of the other functions work on this fake phone. I think that it will run up data charges unless I get the prepaid SIM card. Other than that, it seems like a wrap and a scrap right?

Sounds like you guys can help me. I spend 3-5 months a year in France. I have a basic phone that uses a SIM card, Orange is the carrier. I don’t have a monthly plan. I simply go to a tabac and buy 15-35 euros of time, then put in the code on the receipt and talk til it runs out.
Question is: can I buy an unlocked iPhone, plug in my Orange SIM card, buy some time, and use the iPhone with all its functions? Can I check email and surf the web? Sorry if this is really elementary, but I’m learning. Thanks for any help.
Cris,
The answer is ‘possibly’. If you have an unlocked iPhone, and you put a SIM card in it, the iPhone will be able to do whatever the SIM card allows. If you buy a SIM card that can only make phone calls, then the iPhone will only be able to make phone calls. If you buy a SIM card that allows data access as well, then you will be able to use the iPhone to get eMail and browse the web.
I can’t be more specific, as this is really dependent on the SIM card you buy. Basically though, if the SIM allows it in a ‘normal’ phone, it will allow it in an (officially unlocked) iPhone.
Andy.
I need to the same as Chris, also in france… but I want to get the full iPhone functionality on an unlocked 3g that my daughter in the UK has offered me. Do I just take it to Orange in france and ask nicely? Currently I use a pay-as-you-go Orange Nokia in france, but only for calls and sms.
What I’ve read on other blogs is that to get full functionality on the iPhone, you need to pay someone for it. It doesn’t work on a pay as you go SIM card. I think Orange would want you to buy a plan, so much per month for a package of services, megabites, minutes, etc. and sign up for a year or two. I’ve decided to just expand my ATT service from the U.S. to cover data and text, then monitor it closely to keep the cost down. What the ATT lady said was that if I locate a wifi somewhere, I can use that for data and, since it’s not using ATT’s network, there is no charge beyond the monthly.
That said, the plans are mindbogglingly complicated. They’ve put their best minds to work to figure out how NOT to let you get away with anything.
The touch screen catches the eye and you’ll be blown away by its explicit quality. I had it for a while now, and yes it has seriously exceeded my expectations. Certainly superior in terms of touch screen response and it has awesome email and video apps. I believe the specification is arguable the highlight of this i- phone. I wish if they would added radio to it as well, however, I would heartily recommend this.
Guys seriously NO JK i swear in my life this is the best website out there, its expensive but it WORKS! I did research about the site is it real or is it a SCAM. HELL NO ITS REAL! IT TOOK THEM 5 DAYS TO OFFICIALLY UNLOCK MY 3GS now i don’t worry about updating my iPhone. The site its appledatabase.com …
No it is not true. 5 days ago their price was 200 usd.
Today it is 79.99
If that was a working solution they wouldn’t drop their price.. It must be fake. I dont risk 80 usd just for a try…. I have to be 100% sure
George, I tried using their site when it was affiliated with T-Mobile Germany at 99.99 USD and they first refunded my money when I tried paying through google checkout because they stopped accepting through google. Then I received a refund through paypal when they claimed that their partner had raised rates on them to around 200 USD. Now they supposedly partnered with Orange UK, hence the lower price. If they were a scam, why did they refund my money twice?
I am interested if anybody can suggest me such an unlock option over the internet. I am from India and am unwilling to go for the unofficial unlock option thinking that it might hurt the operability of the iphone in future. Please suggest if any of you have a solution.
hi,
Please beware of fake iphone unlocking offers!!! A lot of sites offering iphone unlocking solutions. But almost all are fake!!! Beware & enquire properly before pay for anything through online.
One of the fake site offering unlocking solution is ‘iphone unlocking ltd’
Hi. I just bought a UK 3Gs on Orange. I asked the owner to call orange, pay the £20 fee and have it unlocked which they agreed to. I plug my phone in now (three days after the request) and the dialogue in iTunes says “unauthorised sim”. Does anyone know how long the unlock should take and how I make it work in iTunes? Many thanks, Max.

I used http://softunlock.com two days ago. It worked great. It was a sinch to use and best of all it didn’t cost me a dime.
thumbs up
Softunlock.com did not work for me at all. Could anyone please confirm that site is legit? Anyway, thanks for guide and proof of the unlocking – very informative.

Hi There I Have A Iphone3G on contract but i just split up from my boyfriend and the contract was in his name and he cut it off and got himself a new 1 so the one i have isnt working now i was wondering could i get it unblocked???
If you could help me out that would be great many thanks
I have also had my iphone unlocked the same way you have. Has anyone had any luck with using a prepaid sim in an iphone in the US like the AT&T with the data upgrade?
I have been doing alot of reading and even though I can use any other sim card it seems that I cant get any kind of prepaid data that will work in an iphone. Any ideas?
I have seen the APN changing website which you can visit and apparently allows you to use AT&T data usage on the iphone, is this still a valid method?

if i want to buy an i phone from usa and want to give the intire amount in one go can i give that without having the 2 years of contract???How much it would cost to me….

Hi Rahul,
this thread is about unlocking the iPhone. Perhaps your unrelated question might be better placed somewhere relevent instead??
I have read this thread with great interest. I have seen the arguments that having an unlocked phone is the way to go, and I am beginning to believe that, especially after having an HTC Fuze Phone that has a screen that is totally worthless, and with AT&T promoting it with their label, and AT&T totally unwilling to stay behind anything, unless there is more $$ in it for AT&T. I resorted to getting a GoPhone for basics until my contract with AT&T is up next month. I love the local people here at AT&T, but AT&T has a strangle hold on everyone who works for them.
At the moment I an existing on basic phone service with a GoPhone, and I look forward to getting an unlocked phone. AT&T has no use for its subscribers other than to milk and bilk. You would think they would have more interest in working with subscribers.
I would be happy if you could ask that boss to make my iPhone also unlocked! contact me if possible! andris.ebay@freemail.hu thx :)
Hi
I am still fighting with carrier in India to unlock the phone.
First they refused, they said they cannot unlock it as the lock is from apple. Thrown away their BS, got them to a stage where they said it will take “1 week” to unlock the phone. 1 week will be over in 2 days, given these 2 days are weekends, I am not sure if i get it unlocked by now.
Normally there is no big rush for me to get it unlocked (have been fighting with them for past 6 months, but now I am out of country and had to spend money on buying another phone to use in Philippines. Offcourse i could have spent this money in getting it unlocked unofficially but this is not how it should be!!!
Apparently on my return, which is 2 months from now, if the phone is not unlocked, i am going to hit the news papers.. they need big news, and this is good story for them to publish.. “Airtel mobile company taking customers for a good ride with Iphone, subscribers are married forever with the service provider, promise of unlocking the phone after 1 year of contract not honored. “
Cheers
i was wondering if i brought a apple i phone from the usa would it would work in australia
Hi
It would be good anybody create a software which support I phone 3G to do Video chatting & small tiny video cam just like spy cam which can be connected to Iphone through the USB cable.
So, please, tell me how to unlock my iPhone?
This is for RANJIT DHIMAN- did Airtel finally unlock your iPhone?
If so, I’d like to know who you had to speak to, so that I can do the same!!
Thanks
Hi im from cameroon and i upgraded my iphone to 3.1.3 and can’t unlock it because i don’t have an AT&T simcard. please i need some one to help me. this was a gift and i haven’t use it up to a week. some one needs to help me out here.
Hey guys… I found this post after basically the same thing happening to me. I got my 3gs the other day and my carrier vivo (brazil) simply unlocked it for me at the store. Very similar to the process in this article, they did a pre unlocking then when I got home I got this same page in iTunes and voilà it’s unlocked… I thought it was crazy but I’m learning to love my carrier because not only did they unlock it, tethering is enabled! I know WTF! I think all carriers should do this kind of stuff. Seriously.
i have i phone 32gb 3GS buy form usa but by mistake updated by the itune and now i conut use any sime or even i cont open the i phone please need fully support form any one and if there are soultion please send me the program or driect site to download it and they step by step to unlock and use any sim card with any country
i am is saudia arabia
PAKMAN,
How ridiculous is your statement?
You KNOW there are major problems buying locked phones, you KNOW that if they are unofficially unlocked you must not update them YET YOU STILL DID!
You decide to post a comment in a blog about Offical iPhone unlocks to get help to unofficially unlock your iPhone, CLEARLY without having read ANY of the previous posts …
THEN, to make matters worse, you state that you are in Saudi Arabia, where it is EASY to buy Officially Unlocked iPhones – they sell them everywhere! Mobily sell them, Jarir sell them, and so do many other places.
With your level of (in)competence, I doubt anyone will be able to help you.
Hopefully they will also unlock the out coming iphone 4g. I’m not satisfied with the service of AT&T. By the way if you guys need computer or laptop repair or data recovery please visit us at 11322 Santa Monica Blvd Los Angeles or call us at (310) 966-9099 or (310) 966-6766.
Would someone please tell me the codes to unlock my iPhone. I would like to use it with T-Moble.
I believe the code is “E8CB445A9C”. You need to input it via the T-woggle, not the V-Dongle, as you are using T-Mobile. Make sure you don’t input the code incorrectly, as this can cause a reverse symbiot link to fail, which will render the device unusable.
And don’t forget to jiggle the T-woggle or the results will be total protonic reversal.
PLEASE NOTE BEFORE SELECTING THE NEXT OPTION YOU HAVE BACKED UP YOUR IPHONES APPS, CONTACTS ETC
the iphone will then reboot and load the startup screen with a usb and the i tunes logo
all going well you should see a screen saying your iphone has been unlocked.
DEAN,
I used the apple database service a back in April and I followed those steps you outlined with a Prepaid Orange UK sim I bought off ebay but I’m getting a message “The SIM inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported” instead of an unlock screen.
Do I’m in Canada right now. Do I have to be in the UK at the time to activate it? Is it the wrong type of SIM?
it supposed to be Orange France SIM-card, dude.
I’m not too sure as this is what I done just last night after my service provider refused to unlock my iPhone for me to be honest it was done by accident as I was erasing all the settings to sell the phone so it was just luck that I done that before I sold the phone lol :)
un locking

Apple will be selling unlocked iPhones directly from their website in the following countries: Canada, UK and France. Go check out the iPhone pages at Apple’s online store for yourselves. I hope that this means that the carriers will offer official unlocks of previously purchased off contract phones in Canada.
I’m here in Canada and with Bell. Anybody know how I can use my iPhone 3GS for 2 weeks in Germany in September? What I want is the GPS capability and would like to buy the Tom-Tom or Garmin app and use the navigation.
I went to 3giphoneunlock.com and bought their satisfaction gaurenteed software. It didn’t work and they won’t refundmy money. Beware of them
I need the password to unlock my phone my homeboy just unlocked it yesterday and i clicked on restore by accident.
If you want to save the hassle, as someone said earlier in this post, just buy an Iphone from a country where they come factory unlocked (like New Zealand.) All though they retail for a lot here, I am sure with the exchange from the euro/US dollars you would all end up saving a lot of $. Go have a look on http://www.trademe.co.nz
Unfortunately this is not the case of my bloody greed mobile company in Portugal, Optimus. A law was created here forcing them to unlock all phones for free, after the commitment period and even so, they are delaying the unlock of phones based on the fact that the law takes 3 months to be active, after being signed. The bastards at Optimus want 200 euros to unlock my old 3G for which I paid 700 euros.
can you help me to unlock my iphone 8gb i bought in uk and it is not working in south africa
could any body please tell me for how much i can buy a unlocked apple iphone4,from usa..
clearly you have not done enough research to know that when you have an iphone that is locked to another carrier and you dont have the carriers sim its impossible to unlock the legit way maybe do more research before making such a statement.
hey, this didn’t work for me. try using http://www.unlockyourappleiphone.com
it works great.. took about 5mins
definitely recommended!
Pretty schweet. Here’s a complete tutorial on unlocking and switching your iPhone’s carrier to T-Mobile:
http://www.zulius.com/how-to/change-iphone-carrier-to-t-mobile/
i was been scammed by several unlocking software. So i decided to buy factory unlocked iphone. i got good deal from http://www.shop.pyramidshoppe.com you can bargain. also DEV team unlocking software not work in my old iphone 3g. FINALLY I BOUGHT FACTORY UNLOCKED IPHONE and no tension of upgrade.
I’m a pretty avid backpacker and will admit that I’m anal about my equipment. If there’s one nuance that I dislike, it is when my gear break. That’s why I always purchase quality equipment to gear myself up and be ready for just about anything the dusty trail throws at me.
Though that may be nice an easy in Finland, it doesn’t work that well here in Canada. I lost my iPhone 3G so I had to get an old phone for the time being. A friend of mine switched to Blackberry and gave me his 3GS for a good price. So after buying he called his carrier Telus and the said it’s not something they do. So now I’m using the phone on my carrier Rogers using the iPhone-Dev magic. It seems that if companies were more willing to be less heavy handed with handsets then business would be much better. I miss the old Fido when Microcell Connections ran it.
You have an cool website!
I know this is a really old post, but in case any international people want to know about the contract agreement situation in the US, you sign up for a 2-year agreement with AT&T and then you can renew the contract pretty much any time a new iPhone comes out to get the contract price on the device, so you’re essentially always locked into an agreement with them.
I’ve had my 3G for over 2 years now, so we are contract-free and could go with AT&T for an iPhone or another carrier for Droid. I think we’re going for a double iPhone4 for our wedding anniversary in 4 weeks.
I think the picture with iTunes is a dream … Even if in USA we have a law what they are clear after you finish the contract and pay off that 2 years contract with the carrier, they have to supply with the unlocking code , because after this 2 years this phone is becoming your property. So if I own that iPhone is a must to give me the full right on that product . But ATT they said NO … that’s mean ATT and Apple they don’t give a shit about American law voted in DC , and decide to still not give that unlocking code. Why we have a law voted to be respected just by T-mobile or Sprint and ATT to do whatever shit they want? At the end of conversation with customer care rep from ATT they send me to a link on att page called lawsuit. How that helps me to unlock my own product and to be free to use it wherever I want . Where is the rights of the consumer .. on my own $$$ they do whatever they want …so sad ….
Yeah, it’s crappy that Apple and ATT found a loophole in the US law to get around providing unlock codes at the end of fulfilled cell phone contracts. Hopefully, Apple will have to provide unlock codes once the deal between ATT and Apple sunsets.
Erm after i restore my phone each time this Img comes up saying its unlocked like above its BS tho. optus have blocked the IMEI not apple. and no it doenst work with other sims afters.
I am in india and here no AT&T activated sim.

I have the iphone 3G. I had my contract with AT&T, and since we are overseas due to a military move, they cancelled our contract w/o fees. I am in Germany and wanting to unlock my phone in the best manner, so that I can use it here for the next couple of years, before returning to the states and upgrading at that point. PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO UNLOCK through Apple.
Here in australia iphones sold to you in the apple store or online store come unlocked. I have two micro sim cards on two diffrent 3g networks one telstra 850 mhz network and vodafone 2100 mhz network and it worked fine on both networks and i found the iphone 4 has better recption then the nokia 6120 850 mhz version witch was interstring. I got 45 km from the base station tower when driving on the beach in the land cruser and cell phones here in australia that use telstra 850 mhz network that works best have a blue tick on them to show what cell phone is best for long distence from a tower and the iphone 4 should have a blue tick on the box and i was very supprised and it worked well. I my city there is a tower near by if it has all channels used up it will pick up a signal around 35 km away and i know this because i live on a hill and look at the cell phone account and i can see on it what tower i was using and here in australia incoming calls are free on all telephones including cell phones
This is not partially true. I have iPhone 3G which is officially unlocked as presented in article above. It works great, but when I turn of the power or move to airplane mode my iPhone report “different sim detected”; “connect to itunes”. When I connect iPhone to iTunes I get again the message that iPhone is unlocked, and every time like that. So, if I’m travelling somewhere by plane and I need to turn my iPhone off or to move it to airplane mode I cannot use my iPhone till I connect it to iTunes, what also means that I need to have internet connection as well. I found one post on official apple page in discussion section posted by one man having the same problem. No one from Apple answered on that question, more worse, post is archived and it is not possible to provide any comments, suggestions, etc.
I like Apple very much and I like my iPhone, but the way how they treat the customers who don’t use their official mobile carriers and in different countries where they are not officially present is sick and not correct!!
Finally my iPhone is unlock and I’ma abble to use in all networks.THX!
I recently moved to the US, after paying the remainder of my contract, and called Rogers iPhone support (Canada) and asked them to unlock my iPhone. The technician said they don’t help people do that but that I could search Google. I specifically asked him, “You don’t have an official unlock through iTunes?” He said no they don’t. So that seems to create three possible scenarios:
1. Rogers Canada doesn’t have the same resources Sonera does.
2. This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
3. He knows exactly what he’s talking about he was simply lying to me.
Not sure which one it is, I’m going to try calling back and see what the answer is from someone else.
I`ve just got iPhone 3G, ( iOS 4.1 ),( bootloader ? ) from Amazon.com (At&T, U.S).
I live in Saudi Arabia.
I put my Saudi ( Zain ) SIM, but did not work.
I look for a solution so my SIM can work.
Here in Australia it is the law to have cell phones unlocked by the custemer if they ask for it but the provider does charge a fee and if you buy outright from the apple store the iphone is unlocked so if i wanted to go overseas i can put a local sim card and it will work on the provider with a local cell phone number and if someone from the usa came to australia you can get an unlocked iphone 4 and get it with gst free at the airport and there are apple stores in brisbane on the northside and the Gold Coast suburb called Robina and Sydney cbd and outer suburbs if you come to our country go and have a look but you have to buy outright or if you have friends over hear ask them to get one for you
Iv forgot my password on my iphone! So i took it to the apple store and they said they need to restore it and ill loose everything iv tried everything! Can someone please HELP ME!!!
That is welcome news, if you live in Sweden, what if you live in Alberta, Canada? Who do you contact here?
Great thread – I’ve read all the content and have a couple of questions that I could use some help with …
Background:
Just got a 3G from a friend who upgraded to 4G.
I would like to unlock the 3G for use on other “more affordable” network. But I’m concerned about the jailbreak / unlock process being unstable and dynamic (not static).
Questions:
1) Are there any stable jailbreaks / unlock routines that are static and do not reset to factory values when the 3G is powered off or the battery runs out of juice?
2) Is there a way to purchase an Orange Sim card and get the official Apple IMEI unlock accomplished?
3) Can the 3G make WiFi calls? and if so, can a “data only” service be purchased and then utilized to make and receive WiFi calls without a carrier plan?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide in answering the questions above…
GP
ok so i tried this method with my 3Gs as my network provider (3) said this was possible. 15£ fee and £30 in phone calls and 7 days later still nothing and no update. Both apple and 3 are not taking responsability now and continuosly lied to me on the phone. They keep making endless excuses and promises which they dont fulfill… oh ill phone you back….like yeah rubbish liars.
the joke is i could have unlocked for nothing and no hassle, but i wanted to go down an official route so i didnt lose my unlock with an update….. phone cost me £399 and i expected more from apple and 3. i am now going down the illegal route because they have left me no option. to say the least im pissed off and dont think for a second apple care about you ….dont be a fool your just sheep to them….dont give then a penny just do it illegally because they make it impossible to do it the right way!
Hello how can I unlock my Iphone it was bought i America and i presently live in sweden.
Jailbreak it.
Hello, first sorry for my english.
I lived in Switzerland and had a iPhone 3G under contract by Orange.ch.
As I moved to Spain I asked to Orange.ch to remove the SIM-Lock of my phone. A few days later I became a response, they told me that they have pass the request to Apple and I should wait 4 workdays and then connect my iPhone to iTunes. I did this and didn’t work first. Then I saw the comment of “Faye” @ saturday Feb. 6 2010 and tried what he said: Remove the old SIM card, put the new carrier SIM card, connect the phone to iTunes, wait around one minute, disconnect it and reconnect it again AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT IT WORKS, my IPhone is officially unlocked by Apple without paying a cent.
I just got my iPhone unlocked to use abroad with a foreign sim card in the legit manner through my network carrier (Three UK) & Apple. I didn’t have to pay off the remainder of my service plan, only a one off fee of £15.32 (GBP). The update came through iTunes & worked perfectly.
You are right.i live in Finland, got my iphone 3g in from sonera in finland.i just unlocked it today.all i did was called sonera cumtomer service, gave them my social security number and phone number, they saw that i have completely paid for it and the contract has expired.they asked for the IMEI,gave them and they unlocked it…they said i should give it few hours before connecting it itunes.connected it after some hours and now have iphone 4 and my old iphone 3g in use.
I have a dilemma. I have an unlocked 3g from the States that I’m using in Italy w/vodafone. I was charging it w/the computer and I let itunes update the os to 4.2. The phone is now locked apparently because it shows an usb cord pointing towards the itunes icon and it says “slide for emergency”. I can’t do anything w/it. itunes tells me there’s not a valid sim card in the phone. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this problem? Any info or input would be highly appreciated.
you first have to activate your phone with the sim card in which the phone was first factory locked. If you do not have that sim card try using “redsn0w beta 4 ” .This will hacktivate your phone on Firmware 4.2.1 without using any sim.You also have to know that this will Jailbreak your phone
Hi Olly,
Thanks so much for the article!
I don’t see the instructions to do it, though. Do I contact Sonera? Is there a link?
