If you want to do regression beyond the built-in Excel function LINEST then currently Numbers is not for you. And neither is Office for Mac, including the '08 versions because VBA has been dropped from the Office 2008 Macintosh suite.

Instead, get VMware (or use BootCamp), load it up with Windows XP and install Office with the Analysis Pack and enable it. Move on from there.

I'm having problem with Numbers. Often when I try to make linear charts, Numbers makes me a graph with much higher scale than necessary and with redundant empty space above the line. For example; if I have numbers of my salary scaling from 1,700-2,300$ trough 12 months, then Numbers makes vertical scale up to 5,000 with a lot of blank space above the line or columns. How to solve this? I noticed that if I exclude some months, the problems sometimes dissapears, but then again, I am left without certain data.

I am having the same problem with charts. I used the same worksheet in Excel and Numbers with one row of data and five columns of dates. I made a simple bar chart with zero problems in Excel in a jif. But in Numbers, I still haven't been able to do the same. I have read the manual, online help and called AppleCare. No help. AppleCare said they're new to Numbers and not trained to give competent advice yet. Imagine that.

Jason - It's not exactly hard. Excel has a name box. Just select the range, type the name, press Enter. But yes, Numbers is nicer and easier to use. And it's "You're", not "Your". :-)

Your not getting it, Matt is right, about 80% right. It is easier to use sum(Total Cost). Excel CAN do named ranges. Find a normal user (read someone that uses excel and would like to do stuff at home, but isn't fluent with it) that has a clue how to do named ranges.

before you say "Everyone I know does", I am a computer instructor for a international training company. Teaching Beginner to Expert MS products, specializing in Office. Every time I get to the named range class, less than 5% of people knew you could do it.

Numbers makes it automatic. Also you can use spaces in the names instead of underscores. Like you have to do in Excel.

>> SUM(E$2, $E$45)

What are you talking about? In excel I select the box I want and hit the Autosum button. It usually gets what I want and I hit enter. If it does, I just draw a rectangle around what I want summed.

You you wacky mac users and your archaic command-line-like typing interfaces!
