Rails or no rails, this game is just straight fun. I am just continuously impressed by what the iPhone can do, graphically. Obviously this is miles from the PC version (or, PC inspiration, to be more accurate), but I think it really captures the spirit and the characters remain convincingly rendered and suitably creepy.

Look, we all know that most iPod games go way off of par level. And I'm certain that the Angry Video Game Nerd would have some choice words.
Tell the truth, I got a game for my iPod Nano a while back and I finished it up not too long ago and towards the end it was riddled with spelling errors and the plot was begging to lapse over on itself and trip all around the character development and cock up the whole danged game. The thing to keep in mind is: games for apple products are always jokes and never meant to really be taken seriously(as would games for such systems as: Xbox360 or Wii).
The only handful of games that I have personally found to like(there are likely more) are these: vortex, klondike, iQuiz, Final Fantasy; the Crystal Defenders.

This is definitely a casual gamer's Doom, though id seems to be following an evolutionary development regarding their software. First came the simple ports, then a game designed for multi-touch, and next up is the Quake series. However, the question of how much one can do across the entire range of Apple hardware may ultimately be the limiting factor regarding development, that and whether enough people will pay $9.99 for a game.

If you don't like on-rail games, you will certainly not like this version of Doom. Doesn't mean that the game was terrible -- it just means that it was not meant for you.

I, for one, had a blast with it, and thought it was a well crafted attempt to recreate Doom as a casual game experience. Charles Jade seems to agree.

"After seeing Wolfenstein 3D on iPhone, I was hoping this was a rerelease of Doom I or Doom II. Nope, just disappointment."

There was plenty of coverage of the game, both before and after it was released, including several interviews of Carmack explaining his rationale for making it on-rails. You've got only yourself to blame here: a bit of research would have saved you $9.99 of disappointment.

The good news is that a graphically enhanced Doom 1 is making its way to the App Store soon.

You're kidding, right?

This game was terrible! The controls are clumsy, and you're on a "rail", which is annoying and limiting. It's all repetitive and boring. You can't really explore, so there's nothing really that interesting to try. Dodge, reload, shoot. That's it. Oh, and pick up the dead-obvious health pack; but what else were you going to do?
The dialogue, performances, and characters are cheesy. The development of the character models is clumsy.

It's not Doom at all, other than the loose visual resemblance to the more recent desktop title. After seeing Wolfenstein 3D on iPhone, I was hoping this was a rerelease of Doom I or Doom II. Nope, just disappointment.
