9 iPhone Apps to Keep You Fit
You may have caught our round-up of iPhone apps for your car from a few weeks ago. Well, it’s time for another batch, so here’s our our list of 9 fitness-related iPhone apps. Once again, each item on the list links to a full review with feature and pricing information. Enjoy!
Nutrition/Weight/Health Information Apps
Restaurant Nutrition
If you eat a lot of fast food, but you’re morbidly curious and want to know what you’re putting in your body, then this is the app for you. I like it because it helps me eat reasonably well when I’m on the road.
LIVESTRONG.COM Calorie Tracker
You probably recognize the Livestrong name from Lance Armstrong’s charitable organization that made yellow bracelets omnipresent. Well, now they’ve given us an app that keeps track of your daily calorie intake/burn.
Weightbot
An adorable robot that keeps track of your weight for you. A great app that’s beautifully designed, in addition to being useful, with nice sound effects, graphics and animations.
Personal Trainer Apps
iPump Total Body
The perfect app for the meat-heads in the crowd. Not my personal fave when it comes to this category, but it might appeal to people who are just making the jump from more traditional workout aids like videos and DVDs.
iFitness
The best fitness app for general users, since it gives you all the basics, but you can also customize it as much as you need to.
GymGoal Lite
Whether you’ve set a serious goal to meet, or you just want to keep track of your workouts, this iPhone app can help you. Has some nice extras that may or may not suit your particular needs.
Run/Walk/Bike Tracker Apps
RunKeeper
A perennial favorite in the App Store, RunKeeper is definitely more than capable of keeping track of your runs. Good integration with an online site makes it an inexpensive alternative to Nike+ for iPhone users.
FitView
Store all of your aerobic workout information in one convenient, portable location with this app. It might not record the info for you, but it does do a good job of organizing and analyzing it.
Fitnio
Sometimes you don’t want all the bells and whistles, just a clean app that monitors your progress when you’re out for a run. Fitnio fits the bill, giving the casual runner or biker everything they need at a price that’s unbeatable.

What’s with the RSS spam? Why when you do these kind of posts (which I think are a good idea) do I get nine preceding articles for each individual app (not a good idea)?
It’s a little annoying to have my feed reader get so many articles when they are all summed up and linked to in one articles at the end of it all. Seems a little unnecessary.
@Phil (and anyone else): Shoot me an email and I’ll explain. josh at gigaom dot com
I like iFitness. I wouldn’t like to do without it,
Weightbot: the nices app in whole AppStore, but it costs about 3EURO, it’s quite expensive if we look at Weightbot functionality.
I have the Nike+ (an older version) and what I really want is some app that will give me splits automatically. In other words, have the trainer voice tell me that I just ran the last mile in a 8:30 pace. Does anything like that exist?
oh gosh you do know about runkeeper
I agree with Phil. 9 consecutive stories about fitness apps on my Google Reader did seem a little unnecessary. Or perhaps I’m just unfit…
No – indication of price for each of these?
I have lost 40lbs since July and use Weight Track to track my weight which then syncs to OKC Million (Oklahoma City Weight Loss program, i live in FL but use it just to backup to the “cloud”).
Recommended App: Weight Track
SparkPeople…on iphone and online it’s awesome, the best and free for fitness, food tracking, motivation, etc. It’s unbelieveable!!
BTW, Weight Track = FREE!
Here’s my exercise tracker – Workout Buddy:
http://smasher.com/blog/2008/09/23/iphone-program-workout-buddy/
It allows you to define your own workouts, add exercises, sets, and reps, and count out those exercises. It also keeps track of when you performed each exercise and workout, and when it’s time to do it again. Enjoy!
And to think all I do is play games on my 3G!

@Dgar: We published 9 FULL reviews…that’s 9 new articles…that means your RSS feed would show 9 new articles. It’s not “spam”, it’s us publishing content and your RSS reader doing its job. :)
You may want to also take a look at http://www.gyminee.com... While not actually an application they do have a version of their website optimized for the iphone and ipod touch with many of the features of the programs listed above.
Another great app that does calorie counting and weight tracking:
http://countitoffapp.com/
It also allows for tracking online.
I’m not affiliated at all with this app, other than using it daily.
You missed one of the best workout and exercise apps out there, Trainer Mobile. I use it primarily for the exercise videos and descriptions, which are amazing….
I agree with Ryan. Trainer Mobile trumps all those other apps. For the price tag the amount of content is staggering compared to iPump or iFitness for that matter. Couldn’t recommend a better work out app.
I totally love Finio!
Thanks for the suggestion, it is way easier to use than the other fitness apps.
I love the simplicity of the application, I can’t wait to show it to my friends.
Thanks again,
Liz
love these apps especially the tracker app great!!
EveryTrail is another good app for outdoor activities. Tracks, distance, altitude, speed and lets you take geotagged pics along the way. http://www.everytrail.com
FatWatch is a weight tracker that allows you to import/export your data to CSV-formatted text files, in case you’ve already been tracking with something else and don’t want to start from scratch on your iPhone.

P.S. I’ve got free download codes I’m giving away.
This is a pretty good list, but I think that it could use some updating…
I completely agree with the nutrition apps, but I think that the personal training list is a bit weak. I can’t really get what all the hype about iTrainer is about, every time that they add functionality to please the customers that wanted things that should have been there in the beginning, they do so in a very confusing and unthoughtful way. Personally, I am a much bigger fan of Trainer Mobile.
Here’s a new app I just used this morning: http://bit.ly/365workouts – Workout of the Day app has a no-gym-required workout for every day of the year. (I wrote all the workouts–took forever!)
Unlike some of these others that help you track by asking you to input stuff, this app is more about inspiring you, helping you think of things to do when you are too tired or don’t feel like being creative. Not really a replacement for the above, but a good companion.
Looks like you’ve ignored Apple’s Web app category. I’ve tried the rather simplistic apps available on the App store and was rather disappointed. Finally I’ve found the best fitness app, in the Web app section, Apple Staff Pick – FitSync: http//fitsync.com/iphone I can use it OFFLINE and online. GReat videos, charts, FAcebook feeds, widgets, huge library of exercises and workouts … you need to check out FitSync.
Wow! what an idea ! What a concept ! Beautiful .. Amazing … :)
Makes me wish my cell provider carried the iPhone….Maybe the Google phone will have some of the same apps.

Try iAchieve (http://petrovski.net.au/iAchieve/Index.html) to track your fitness and more.
Nice. I will try some of these on my iphone today. I’ll review them in the store soon too
Shaun
Has anyone downloaded the new app 12 Week Fitness, its based off the Body for Life program. Its pretty cool and figured I would mention it in case you haven’t heard of it yet. The Lite versions alright but the full version is better. Its not for diet though, its mainly for working out :)
I have the 12 week fitness app and I love it. The easiest diet/workout plan I have ever tried is the body for life plan. This app works great for those who are doing this.
Try BodyJournal – it’s been designed to make tracking your calories simple enough to do every day and setting goals and tracking weight easy so you can stick with a diet program. It has also just been nominated for an award.
You can check it out at http://www.adduce.se/bodyjournal.html.
Try also Ghost Race! Ghost Race lets you record yourself running, walking, cycling, even skiiing or sailing, then race against yourself with realtime visual and audio queues to tell you if you’re behind your last pace. Available in App Store here http://bit.ly/info/10a1xB
For a very simple app that lets you add your own exercises, try “Repetitions” (http://nottoobadsoftware.com/Repetitions/).
Do not forget that exercising your thumbs is important too!!!
Check this hilarious application for the iphone…a thumb gym:
http://modus-spes.appspot.com/thumbgym/index.html
Also this one for fitness and outdoor workouts, works for me at least it keeps me fit :D
http://www.sportypal.com
Hey; i see there’s good monitoring apps (like run keeper) and good training and advice apps (like ifitness) but are there any apps that combine the two?
Theres a pretty cool app that helps you perform your gym sets. I use it in conjunction with iFitness and it pretty much gets rid of a personal trainer. Check it out: RepTrainer at http://www.chezinteractive.com
Check out http://www.TechniqueFitness.com and its FREE IPhone app. It is far better then the ones listed above and much less expensive.
I have just tried “SportyPal”, thanks for the link, now i dont have to worry about getting a garmin etc, its fabulous, you can even post your workouts on facebook, just been out for a quick spin and tested it.
for those that dont know it shows all the usaual bike comp stuff, plus:
satellite with 3d map via Google Earth, road and mixed terrain layouts (pretty much real time and v accurate)
velocity
hieght
calories
time
distance
workout chart
you can also upload them then compare stats etc…. really good tool all for free!!
I like PerTrainer App over iFitness app. The work flow seems more natural and it’s very easy to add your own exercises with pictures. Plus they have supporting website. And latest version of the app seems to take care of all bugs. Website is kinda nice and free too: http://pertrainer.com
I think they have import from iFitness, but haven’t tried it yet. They also pretty good with response to support requests and seem to be improving the app constantly.
A lot of these apps are overkill. Fitness8 does it for me.
I lost 22 pounds with the help of LoseIt. I switched to LiveStrong last month because of the lack of a website/syching. Now I might switch back.
I prefer Xrun because, unlike most apps in its class, Xrun :
â– is ridiculously easy to use: most of the time the user has to just press a single button.
â– doesn’t give your just numbers or graphs (about your weight, body shape, etc). It also shows (green = good, red = bad) how good these numbers are in the user’s particular case.
So, the user can decide how much effort to put towards exercise and weight loss.
â– includes ‘People’s Choice weight recommendation’, which takes into consideration age, gender, and peer’s perception (in addition to user’s height and weight).
â– includes very informative personalized recommendations and has great integration between graphs and health markers.
I prefer All-in Fitness as the app is great for keeping fit with lots of exercises and yoga and pedometer and a music player.
