David Marcus, the President of Paypal who led the company through mobile and offline payment expansions, will be leaving eBay to join Facebook as VP of Messaging Products.

“Mark shared a compelling vision about Mobile Messaging,” Marcus explained Monday in a post on Facebook.  “At first, I didn’t know whether another big company gig was a good thing for me, but Mark’s enthusiasm, and the unparalleled reach and consumer engagement of the Facebook platform ultimately won me over.”

Facebook confirmed the move via blog post. It’s likely that Marcus will not only oversee Messenger, but also Facebook’s more exploratory products like the newly uncovered Slingshot, though whether he will take over WhatsApp remains unclear. One of his final major acts at eBay was to oversee the acquisition and integration of Braintree with PayPal, giving the payments company a much stronger presence with mobile developers and new sharing-economy startups.
