Summary:

Screen casting may be coming to Android — but is it a third-party development, or something that Google wants to introduce officially?

Chromecast Google Play

One way or another, Android  users may soon be able to mirror their mobile device’s screen to their Chromecast streaming adapter. Koushik “Koush” Dutta, developer of the media casting app Allcast, posted a video this weekend that shows him mirroring his device’s home screen, as well as apps like Flappy Bird, with a notably small delay.

Dutta said on Twitter that this is “a work in progress,” and not part of his Allcast app. In another tweet, he said that he used a modified form of the real-time communication protocol WebRTC to accomplish the mirroring. It’s worth noting that for his day job, Dutta works for Cyanogenmod, the maker of the alternative Android distribution by the same name. In theory, this could mean that mirroring will only be available to Cyanogenmod users.

However, a number of users of the stock Android version reported last week that briefly, a menu item appeared on their device that suggested they too could screencast. The item didn’t actually lead to results, and seems since to have disappeared from some of the devices — but it could be an indicator that this is actually something that Google is looking to deploy at some point itself.

  1. Not bothered about gaming or non-supported video apps, but loving Allcast. Since GP services went to 4.2.42 I can cast pics/video/audio straight from my Nexus 7 or Nexus 4 to the TV via Chromecast.

Another recent enhancement is the ability to cast YouTube videos, embedded in web pages, where the uploader has enabled TV viewing. No need to go to YT itself.

    Love Chromecast.

I find it odd that Google has yet to concentrate on making screen mirroring seamless and reliable. If they provided a real rival to AirPlay the Chromecast would be a far more interesting item.

I got the option in my notification shade pull down, but it failed. Stock Android 4.4 on an HTC One.

    1. Of course it failed, u have screen mirroring which is actually miracast, its a different standard, would work fine if u had a miracast dongle and u can get em for 20 bones. “:)

  4. I have found that AllCast works very well with my Plex media server as long as the movies are of the MP4 type. It would be nice if Koushik would implement screen mirroring so that everyone in the room could see the movie list and help choose the entertainment,
