Target is adding staff and will keep its call centers open all day Christmas to respond to customer concerns about a security breach impacting 40 million credit- and debit-card customers. Target’s brick-and-mortar stores will remain closed for the holiday.
The massive breach, which affected customers in the company’s stores but not its online sites, was uncovered by the indefatigable Brian Krebs on December 13. Target confirmed the report six days later, saying customers making in-store purchases between November 27 and Dec 15 could be affected. On Monday, Target said the U.S. Justice Department is investigating the data theft.
This snafu echos the big credit card breach that afflicted nearly 100 million TJX credit card customers in 2007.
