Rapidly diversifying web host provider GoDaddy is buying Media Temple, a web site design and hosting specialist with some pretty blue chip clients including Home Depot, Nike, Lowes, Nordstrom, NBC and Vogue. This acquisition, terms of which were not disclosed, is GoDaddy’s sixth buy in the past 15 months.

Media Temple logoGoDaddy CEO Blake Irving (pictured above) said he won’t fix what’s not broken — Media Temple will continue to do business as usual. “It will operate by itself, the brand stays the same, the customer care, the backend they built will all stay as is,” Irving said in an interview.

What Media Temple brings to the table is solid web design and development talent that, in turn,  attracts big-brand customers. GoDaddy is making a concerted attempt to woo this type of professional developer. Media Temple claims to serve 125,000 customers and host 1.5 million web sites.

“We couldn’t think of a better company to acquire for this. Media Temple has brilliant people and loyal customers,” Irving said.

With Media Temple’s 225 employees aboard, total GoDaddy headcount is at about 4,200. The company, once known for its racy ads and low-cost web site hosting and domain names, has been undergoing a transformation over the past year or so, shuttering its Cloud Servers business and then entering into software-as-a-service applications and other arenas.

What Media Temple and GoDaddy have in common is their practice of selling bottom-performing entry level and mid-range hosting services to small business customers who won’t notice how bad it is but will accept “customer support” that blames the customer in order to upsell them on more things that don’t work.
