Summary:

The popularity of Grand Theft Auto V earned it not just one Guinness World Record, but seven.

It turns out that everyone has a little bit of criminal in them, as Rockstar Games’ latest entry into its gritty Grand Theft Auto series, Grand Theft Auto V, has shattered seven Guinness World records with its popularity.

Confirmed by the Guinness World Records blog yesterday, GTA V has broken six sales records and one audience record, as gamers from all over the world have clamored to get involved in the guns, blood and glory of the newest title. Here are the records:

  • Best-selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours
  • Best-selling videogame in 24 hours
  • Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
  • Fastest videogame to gross $1 billion
  • Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours
  • Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
  • Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame

And its got some serious numbers to back those claims up. According to Guinness’s blog, GTA V, which was released on September 17 for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, sold 11.21 million units in its first 24 hours. Those sales alone generated $815.7 million, putting the title on pace to reach $1 billion in sales in just three days.

The game not only snatched records previously held by Activision’s Call of Duty video game series, but also transcended to other mediums — ousting box office revenues from both The Avengers and Avatar to pick up some of its records.

The critical and commercial acclaim of GTA V not only reflects how much of a beloved franchise Rockstar Games has built, but the power of a great blockbuster game. These days, video games are so mainstream that more and more titles can — and will — compete with big-budget movies in sales revenue. While GTA V has certainly made the greatest impact, don’t expect it to be the last title to achieve this level of success.

  1. How sad is this…

    1. Get a life. Nothing wrong with a bit of escapism gaming – especially when it’s done this well. Hats off to you Rockstar games :)

  2. Rockstar games has indeed set a standard for other video game developers, especially now that GTA V has broken 7 Guinness World Book Records. However, leading up to the official launch of the game, reports went out that GTA V is the most expensive video game ever made. I wonder why that has not been included in the list of GTA V’s record breaking streak?
