It might be a very happy Halloween for Google fans. Artem Russakovskii of Android Police has been posting a series of rumors to his Google Plus account, the latest of which claims that Google is working on a Nexus smartwatch, codenamed Gem, to launch alongside Android 4.4 KitKat on October 31.
“I have several interesting rumors that I feel relatively confident about but either don’t have visual evidence or a second confirmation,” Russakovskii wrote. He also pointed out that he learned about that October 31 announcement date a month ago, so don’t be surprised if it changes.
Still, if this does prove true, Google has done a remarkable job keeping the smartwatch under wraps so far. Some of the only information out there is this patent, which suggests a smartwatch from Google could use a similar interface to Google Glass, with touchpads on its wristband that can recognize finger gestures.
There’s little doubt that Google will be more formally introducing KitKat in the near future, along with the Nexus 5. Determining whether the Nexus Gem actually exists is a bit more tricky, but it’ll be a major treat if it does.
