BajaLibros, an Argentinian digital book store that sells Spanish-language ebooks throughout Latin America, has launched in the United States. But there is already a lot of competition for the Spanish-language ebook market here.

BajaLibros is owned by Grupo VI-DA, an Argentinian digital media group. The bookstore says it sells over 50,000 free and paid Spanish-language ebooks, which it says is more than Amazon or Apple’s iBookstore. The ebooks are available as EPUB files, protected by Adobe DRM, and can be read on  BajaLibros’ iOS and Android apps or on devices that support Adobe Digital Editions, including Barnes & Noble’s Nook and Kobo.

BajaLibros may have difficulty breaking into the U.S. market, where Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple have all opened Spanish-language digital bookstores already. Barnes & Noble’s Nook Books en Español store, which launched in 2010, lists around 58,000 Spanish-language ebooks. Amazon launched its Spanish Kindle Store in 2012, and it now has around 54,000 titles for sale. And Apple sells at least a few thousand Spanish-language ebooks in the U.S. (I’ve asked the company for the exact number.)

As of Wednesday afternoon, BajaLibros was still listing prices on the home page of its website in Argentinian pesos, though the actual book pages showed them in U.S. dollars.
