Summary:

Sunrise is good for Google Calendar users hunting for a mobile calendar app that’s more sophisticated than the default app that comes standard on the iPhone without being overly complex.

Sunrise Calendar was released a few weeks ago, and I covered the launch then. But after using it for a few weeks I can say that it’s become a go-to app for me. And during that same time period, the team behind Sunrise also added a new feature based on initial user feedback: the option to sign in via Google instead of just Facebook.

Sunrise was initially launched as an email newsletter by a duo of former Foursquare user interface designers last year. But they decided to take the same idea — an overview of your day created by aggregating all the various calendars you  have, whether from Google, LinkedIN or Facebook — and make it into an app that users can go back to throughout the day to check on their upcoming schedule and appointments.

Below is a video where I walk through how the app works and why I think it’s a good app for those hunting for a mobile calendar app that’s slightly more sophisticated than the default app that comes standard on the iPhone.

    1. Hi Harvey,

The video works for me both on the desktop and on my iPhone. Where are you trying to watch it?

I also really like this app. I’ve been using for a few weeks and I have a busy schedule including multiple flights, dinner plans and drinks with business colleagues and friends.

All in all, I really enjoy it but it’s still lacking a few things to make me completely happy.

I wish there would be a “notes” section for each event. I often would like to write down things like a confirmation code (at the moment I integrate it into the title of the event, but these can get very long). Speaking of which, it would be really nice to have some sort of service that could track flights for you and through push notifications, warn you that a flight has been delayed or something of the sort and change your calendar times.

Why can’t I set my own Alert time, why does it have to be a preset? The options given are not always appropriate. Do I want an alert 1 or 2 hours before my flight… but it takes me 2 hours to get to the airport from my location!!! GAH! I’d like 4 hour notification please, oh but no, I have to go to 1 DAY instead!!!

I really would like to be able to add an address/map location by searching for a contact instead of by address. I already have my contact’s addresses, and Sunrise has access to my contacts, so why can’t I type “Bob” in the search and besides finding “Bob’s Restaurant”, it could say here’s Bob’s address as an option as well!

Finally, I REALLY hope they come out with a desktop version…… without the equivalent desktop version, I find myself adding info to Fantastical, then heading over to my iPhone to tweak the info accordingly. A bit of a problem in my opinion.

I sound a little overly critical, but it’s because I really want this app to do all this. It would be a HUGE improvement and would make my life so much easier instead of the alternative of switching from Evernote, to iCal, back to Google Drive, then Google Maps to end up back in iCal. The integration is amazing…. but I need those extras and I suspect many others as well.

    Keep up the good work!

  3. Did you know: “long” pressing the + sign allows you to enter an event using natural language? Your only gripe in the whole video, SOLVED! :D
