But ‘quants reviled’? It’s true that a lot of quants lost their jobs when banks downsized after the financial crisis, But it wasn’t the quants who lost the money in the 2007-8 round. That was regular old sloppy deal making around bad assets that the ratings agencies were certifying as AAA. Gordon Gekko is about as far from a quant as Broccoli is to a Moon Pie. I’ll give you LTCM in 1998 but most people were never aware that that crisis ever happened and the term Quant wasn’t in the common lexicon at the time. Even in that case it wasn’t so much ‘evil’ as it was hubris that led to trouble. If quants end up with a bad rap in meme space coming out of the finically crisis, you had better watch out because there is no one so vengeful as the wrongfully accused.
