My stage amp is a tube Egnator Tweaker, and I love it.

That said, I prefer to record direct with a USB interface rather than mike my amp. That way if the cat meows loudly, it doesn't recorded.

Since this is supposed to be a best-of list, may I politely point out that there are two glaring omissions:

AmpKit Link (http://agilepartners.com/apps/ampkit/interfaces/), which in my experience is the best deal out there, matching Apogee for less money.

iRig by IK Multimedia (http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irig/index.php?pp=irig-specs) is pretty good too.

Both of these were built for iOS but connect just fine to any Mac that has the mini plug (post-2008 models).

I have the impression that every guitar player feels that a good tube amp is what they most want to play through, and no modeling program – and definitely no solid-state amp or stomp box – is as good as tubes. The only downside is the cost and maintenance of tube amps. Would you agree?
