Aikin HyperSearch 2.0 just released with a completely re-designed user interface and fuzzy content search with proximity detection across your information items, including:
OneNote, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Rtf, HTML, Adobe PDF, Outlook Email, Contacts, Tasks, Notes, Calendar, and in a few days it will scan Evernote as well.

Full disclosure - I'm on the team.

We have a new FREE version available that works well for basic users.

In response to ben, we consider our customer's privacy extremely important. If you look at our privacy agreement, we do not capture or upload any of your private documents/information. The application does tell our servers when someone has installed our app, but this is only used for general analytics and statistics. When you register, your customer information is used only for customer communications, and is never sold or re-distributed for marketing purposes.

This is an exciting field to be in. The way we consume, manage/curate, and make use of information is going evolve dramatically over the next decade.

So the analogy with GMail makes sense--except that the content on my desktop or system is used to aid in future "searches" rather than advertisements. This trend strikes me as lazy--exchanging self-generated searches based on individual creativity, initiative, self-awareness, and intelligence for an algorithm's multiple choice quiz about what I really want to know. Before adapting such technology, people should want to know what privacy protections are in place--why should you give up the contents of your desktop for supposed added convenience to some amalgamating bot? where else is this information going, being sold, or being used to further some other marketing interest?

That is often the hardest part for researchers or Googlers, the abundance of content is sometimes a burden, creating more agile ways to find what you need is definitely going to be a central theme of search engine progress as the web continues to develop.

Incorporating this tech into analytics for business users could also have an awesome impact.

For a great example of this concept in action, check out the novel Acelerando by Charles Stross, its a great work for speculative sci-fi. The main character is supported by "intelligent agents" that are contextually aware and provide useful information. These are essentially expert systems that take into account behavior, relationships, environment, ontologies, etc., to give the user what they need when they need it.
