Google’s strategy in France is actually quite clever in respect to the upcoming parliamentary decision on an ancilliary copyright for newspaper publishers in Germany (“Leistungsschutzrecht”). This intended law which is bound to be passed this year, will enable newspapers to take a fee from Google and other web services using snippets to link to a newspaper website. But since the decision in France, a rift has been developing between hardliners like the big publishing company Springer that want this law at all costs and smaller publishers who are not so sure anymore if they shouldn’t take a similar deal as the publishers in France did. 60 million Euro is not a lot, but it’s guaranteed money for nothing. With an ancilliary copyright, however, the outcome would be far from certain to guarantee any substantial license fees if Google and other market players and the public find ways to work around it. So if Google’s intention was to divide the enemy ranks – it’s working.

Well, it's also some sort of payback time for those European countries as google is cheating and lying to avoid paying the real taxes they have to pay.

In other words, before extortion or "bad for the web", it is a matter of social/fiscal/economic justice. If Google had not cheated and lied about taxes, I'm quite sure those European countries would not have tried to punish/extort it like this.

Why aren't you reporting about this topic by the way? Google itself said it was just proud screwing tax services. Amazon, apple and other US giants have been involved in such taxgate in Europe.

It is definitely not about the web or the press, it is just about a big company being punished by any means because it is screwing entire nations. And the economic crisis helped them act.

If they think no-use beats fair-use they will get no-use. If the Germans think they can enforce their economic hegemony in the EU by using French, well then Google will let them try.
