Apple is under no near or long term threat from either the inferior Android experience nor from the vastly inferior Windows Mobile.

Besides, a closed platform like Apple’s has the ultimate nuclear weapon should its dominance be threatened: Licensing. It’s far easier to open up a door in a wall than it is to build (monetize) a walled garden from a wilderness.

While I generally tend to agree, I struggle with the fact that the (second) largest company, and most successful one today in the world, is running a closed shop when it comes to the platform it uses.
How do you reconcile the resiliency and success of Apple’s shop in this regard?
