Actually in looking at the definition, hybrid can apply if they are different cloud platforms (which is what is being suggested). But whatever, federated makes sense too.

While Cloudify may have this, i do think what Netflix is much more complicated in that, at the very least, it is a PaaS where AWS is an IaaS with PaaS features (i.e. they are not just deploying an app) Sadly there are so many variations in PaaS and IaaS that is difficult to compare and contrast or even truly categorize.

> "...that kind of hybrid..."
I believe it's called "federated" (not "federal"!)

One tool that I know of can help you with the "complex" task of managing your apps on several clouds is the opensource software Cloudify by Gigaspaces (cloudifysource.org ; dislosure - a former employer of mine). Although currently one "controller" can deploy your apps to one availability zone of a cloud provider (any provider!), the move to a federated topology is not too far off.

One of the issues to concider not mentioned in the article when splitting your apps on several clouds (or even several data centers of the same vendor) is mirroring your apps' data across all federated entities as quickly as possible.

Whatever you do, it should be exciting to manage this kind of operation.

At first I thought you meant a private/public cloud hybrid. But then I read and went ... oh yeah that kind of hybrid. And it make total sense. People who assume a private cloud is better are ignoring a lot of things.
