Hey Derrick, I'm Dan, the Madeira guy from the Garage Cafe.

Great over view of domestic startups, CloudValley are doing some interesting things here. There's also a lot of OpenStack stuff going on, including a new project by some ex-Sina guys that sounds very promising.

We are in the unusual position of being based in China but internationally focused, but as you've seen, still very early days here. We're only Western focused because that's where the users are, but I think we'll see some interesting developments this year here in China which could change our focus.

Regardless, great to see the international media getting more involved here, between this and the recent The Next Web article, Chinese cloud is getting some great coverage:

Great to meet you and thanks for your time at the Garage Cafe. Keep watching this space!

am not starting any startup yet... maybe maybe soon.

Looking forward to your post on greater China cloud which is very valuable cause your views are from different angle (from outside) instead of our angle -inside out:)

BTW, here u go a link to the blog recently posted by Liu Li Ming which reviewed the IaaS market of China and major players... http://blog.chinacloud.org/ Sorry it's in Chinese, just in case if you need more input and maybe some Chinese can help you with the blog.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I was limited in the number of companies I was able to sit down with, although I did meet a lot more (including Madeira, which is, ironically, targeting a largely non-Chinese audience) -- especially in the consumer web and gaming spaces. Do you of many other startups doing serious work in cloud or big data?

And my post on the greater Chinese tech world -- including Alibaba, Sina, Tencent, etc. -- is forthcoming. ;-)

Very nice observation and accurate description of these startups in China. Plus most of yr points of view regarding the unique characteristics about the market of China is really accurate!

Only issue is that 4 out of 7 startups you mentioned kind of from one big family – Broardband Capital which is kind of initiated by Dr. Tian Shuo Ning who’s also the father of Internet in China.

EEPlat guys have been there for couple of years and sticking to their target to be the metadata PaaS vendor which equals to Salesforce’s Forece.com, yes!

SkyCloud is the system integrator of cloud and supposed to integrate and sell all products and solutions from it’s big family including but not limited to TCloud, SuperCloud, YoYo and more… which is the big game of Dr. Tian that covers from very underlying infrastructure to upper software stacks of clouds!

To better understand the cloud market of China… u’ve got to talk with those Web tycoons who’s playing big roles in cloud market including Sina with it’s SAE PaaS and SWS IaaS(based on Openstack), Aliyun(an Alibaba company) with it’s own IaaS and PaaS developed from scratch, GrandCloud with it’s own IaaS developed from scratch… these are the leaders of public cloud.

…. too much yet to say:)

Welcome to BJ and China… this is the worst and the best place for cloud computing with huge challenges and great opportunities!
