Because customer/consumer data is valuable. Access to this data allows the suppliers and service providers to plan and execute more efficient delivery.
One such proven business case is in insurance telematics. The consumer shares data about his/her vehicle usage profile with the insurance company which in return allows the insurer to evaluate risks more efficiently which in turn reduces the insurance policy cost for the consumer.
Similar scenarios can be envisaged for many other customer/supplier scenarios. Can you not imagine a local supermarket that collects data from it's local customers' (fridges) which allows it to stock more efficiently and reducing the cost of its goods and reduce the prices for its customers who share their data etc. etc.

Great to see four of the most pertinent and outstanding questions neatly summarized in a single article! Don't forget about the most important question: why? There are many reasons why we're connecting more and more Things, but for the IoT to take off as analysts are predicting, there must be a very, very compelling "why".

I have a 5th question - what problem are you trying to solve? I mean, apart from giving the CIA full access to your entire house. Before being ousted, Leon Panetta was very excited about all these connected appliances allowing him to covertly bypass the 4th amendment.
