By their very nature, some apps are too utilitarian to win any beauty contest. They’ve got a job to do and doing it well is what matters.

Apple should have several categories of apps that are judged on their sheer usefulness. And I know one that should win for 2013, the soon-out version of Scrivener for iOS. I bought an iPad just for it. That isn’t to say that Scrivener is ugly. Just that what it does matters more than how it looks.
