The recent unfortunate and sad events of Newtown have re-ignited the Gun Control debates. There are incredible and well thought out statements on both sides of the argument. Many on the social networks are quoting sources, available on the web as gospel, that seem to validate one side or another.

However, what is considered truly accurate these days? Anyone with a bit of thought, time, access to some information can create a webpage and have it referred to as valid. I remember reading a story about the holocaust many years ago and the fact that some people were posting the entire thing was faked. It took many more people with another set of data to refute these claims.

Newspapers like the NY Times have been regarded as time keepers and historians. The recognition, value and balanced reporting of information, facts and issues is what people are looking for. This is where they still have power and where people will go to as a source of accurate information.

Recent elections at the city level here in Encinitas, CA prove that community newspapers have more power than daily newspapers to sway local elections. The candidates endorsed by the local paper won in spite of the daily papers endorsing their competition. While a bit off-topic, interesting none-the-less.

Does NYT have a print edition? Forgot about that.
"and the shared experience they offer has no real equivalent online." - except the online version of said papers? If anything, online expands the audience from a tiny market to a few billions, without online the reach of any news item would be a lot more limited (speaking of NYT how stupid are they to hide behind a paywall instead of becoming more global, they have the brand and reputation to do so)
Our expectations of professionalism and ethics differ for every source but i'm not sure how many make a distinction between the online and paper version of the same news outlet, you can bet most have seen the picture online not in the actual paper. In the end would The Huff get less heat for something they publish than The Post and if so, is it because one is an online only source or it's because of their reputation?
The 47% video had a significant impact and was an online source, something becomes big not so much because of the initial source but because so many rebroadcast it .
And don't forget that the web doesn't mean strong brands can't exist, it's just that many that already have the brand and reputation, are having a hard time adapting (NYT is ranked behind The Huff in US visitor http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries/US ,global ranking too).
